Peter was exactly what I was looking for! So I posted on Nextdoor that I was looking for a good place for a haircut in the San Leandro area that would be good with Asian hair and do a fade in a particular way that I wanted. It was suggested to go to Peter at Modern Nails & Hair! So Peter and his wife as soon as I approached the door was just so eager to offer service. As I was welcomed in and came to sit down, I was offered water (I've never gone to a place for a haircut that offered water)! That was a nice touch. Peter took care to ask me exactly what I wanted and did his best to comprehend the particularities I was seeking for my hair & fade. Then he went to work... The most remarkable aspect about him and his service was that EVERY SINGLE STROKE was meticulously deliberate with so much concentration and consideration!! If you're thinking of having a quick cut, think again. But I absolutely love & appreciate that and prefer it; I feel that how long a person takes on my very simple straightforward haircut is how highly I end up regarding them. And let's just say that with such deliberate, considerate strokes, it ended up regarding him very high after all that was done...! One interesting thing that they do here is he uses disposable barber capes to drape over you. So if that's a priority or an impressive consideration for you, you can look forward to that and all it entails. Also, it seems they utilize the practice of locking the door during business hours; I imagine it's for when they need to quickly go in the back or something more security conscious. If Peter wasn't in the room at first, I might've thought the place was closed (saying this so you don't make that wrong assumption). The place was nice, spacious, neat, clean, and well-lit. There were the standard tables to get nails done and seats to get hair dried. I didn't take much notice as I was only there for a straightforward haircut. The parking is not so great. There is no parking in front of the establishment. The closest thing to parking being directly in front of this place is across the street; but good luck jaywalking across the very busy downtown E. 14th street traffic. You can either do what I did -- gotta walk from the lot and through the small plaza (Los Pericos is part of it; NOT the Pelton one) or the nearby lot of Leisure Cafe or Asia Delight/Sons of Liberty. One thing I have to keep in mind next time I go to him is to be sure to bring cash; as that's what he insists/prefers as payment for my haircut. But I'm not going to fret too much because he -- for as "highly" I end up regarding him after all he did on such a simple man's haircut -- does it all just to charge so affordably for it! He's cheaper than most of the places around the East Bay and I wouldn't be surprised if he's going as low as the lowest around! Just for comparison, my last 3 places for years were Wink's Hair Studio in Castro Valley (got too busy for a simple men's haircut), Kevin's Cut in San Leandro (he was perfect but only takes cash and was $18 before the pandemic but is now $25), and Daniel's Hair Salon in San Lorenzo (couldn't quite get the fade corners). In the end, I am one of those men who is a loyal customer and sticks to going to the same person/place for years and years to the next generation, and I'll be going to Peter until he retires or my genes cause me no more hair to cut! read more

I strongly feel happy and appreciative by the owner Jenny who helped me today for Gel designed manicure and pedicure services. Today when I walked into the salon was already 6:15pm, its only half hour away from closing, but she greeted me with a big smile and friendly eye contact. I was worry at first she doesn't have time to do gel nail for me so I kindly asked for regular Manicure. but later as we talked to each other, she complement me a lot and made me feel so comfortable, and I like to make friend with her, and later she suggest me to do gel nails and she said she can do designed for me as well, even she need to stay over time, she told me that she love what she does, and she thanked me for letting her help me design! she is very humble and very passion about what she does. When I leave its already 8pm, and she gave me a new flip flops for free because she likes me a lot too, and she took out a paper bag and carefully put my shoes in and carry my arms off the chair. omg so caring! Not only that, she is a lovely caring person, she constantly asking me she hurt me and please let her know, she really do not want to hurt me, I felt she was very sincere. Came in early on a sunday, and I was the only customer. I got a pedicure. The woman was very gentle but thorough. The massage chairs (or at least the one I sat in) is getting a little old. The gears feel like they're starting to struggle. I also asked to add a little flower on each big toe, and she also included a little rhinestone. That was unexpected and nice. They had music playing, but it wasn't my favorite. Instrumentals of all types of songs, but they were very 1980s-Hallmark-movie sounding, like they were all recorded using the different instrument sounds from a keyboard lol. Late Post: I wanted to try out this salon because of the good reviews and it was also close to home. I have had three bad experiences without ever receiving service. 1st - I came in one day with no appointment and the lady was nice but stated she was busy. However, no one was there. 2nd - I came in again a few months later and they said they were closed. How are you closed if the door is unlocked and there are workers in there? Seemed weird. 3rd and last - I called and made an appointment. The lady was nice over the phone so I figured this time I'll finally be able to see what this place is about. Boy was I wrong.... the lady called me the day of my appointment to say she was sick and couldn't do my nails. She says she'll call me to reschedule when she's feeling better. Never got the call!!! And the same day on my way home i drove by to see people inside the shop. Seems like possible discrimination to me. I will NEVER recommend this place to anyone. Their loss. We are almost done and I am dying to get back home but he needs a haircut. He started going to this new barber a couple of weeks ago. Well he calls me while I'm waiting in the car and says it's going to be a little longer as he needed to wait. No problem. I decide to get a quick manicure in the same shop while he gets his hair cut. I enter the shop wet from rain and looking a mess I'm sure. I am greeted by Jenny. She has the sweetest smile I've ever seen. Once you get passed her gentle welcome you notice all the furniture and equipment is new. It is the cleanest nail salon I have ever been in! The floors are spotless. I felt guilty for having my shoes on. Then she offered me hot tea but I declined. We got started on my manicure. I upgraded to gels. The nail station didn't have a speck of dust. Her tools were sealed in plastic and new. And her touch is so soft. She is a perfectionist taking her time to get every nail perfect. Her conversation is sweet and delightful. I fell in love. She gave me a fantastic arm and hand massage. By the time we were leaving I bought a gift certificate and made a vow to myself to never go to another nail salon as long as I live. But wait, as I was putting on my jacket to go, she comes out of the back with a to go cup with hot star jasmine tea. Like the kind you would get from Teavana. I swear I almost started to cry. She insisted I take it for the car ride home. I gave her a hug and thanked her for her kindness. While I was hugging her I was trying to see if I could feel the wings on her back. What an angel. Any reviews before April 2015 pertained to the old owner. It is now under new owner and new management. ..I know of this because I read the negative reviews back to 2012 and 2013 and ask Peter and Jenny ..the new existing employee or owner! Since the new owner took over since April 2015, the reviews has been excellent and I totally agreed! I had my nails done here for the past 3 months. One of the main reason why I came back here was... I got so many compliments from my co-workers and customers. Most importantly, some of my customers are nail shop owners. They said whoever do my nails was very artistic. I had different designs every time I go there. Second reason, Jenny take her time doing my nails and not rushing it. She make me feel important. Always offered coffee and waters. Always smiling.. Third reason, this place is so clean...the soft music and waterfall in background...I can truly relaxed and don't feel like I am at a flea market like some nail shop. Please make appt when you come. Meeting Jenny has been such a blessing. I called her store right when she opened and didn't pick up the first time. I called her again immediately and she picked up. I was lucky enough to have her fit me in. When I arrived it was just her and her husband in the store. She greeted with with so much happiness, it made me feel welcome.
