My first time there, I got a basic pedicure. While she was removing calluses with the foot file/buffer tool, she over-filed the area and broke the skin on the side of my foot. It immediately began bleeding and stung quite a bit. What upset me most was that I had to ask her to address the bleeding and ask for a Band-Aid. She seemed annoyed by the request and whispered something to the coworker sitting next to her. The coworker looked at my foot and they both laughed, which felt dismissive and unprofessional given that I was actively bleeding and genuinely uncomfortable . I have never left a yelp review before but it's now been two days and the area appears infected. I got this pedicure for a wedding I'm participating in this weekend and now I have to wear heels while dealing with discomfort and irritation. The pedicure itself looks great, and I understand that accidents can happen. I'm just disappointed by how the situation was handled. I was made to feel like an inconvenience while actively bleeding and genuinely uncomfortable, and there was no apology or acknowledgment of what had happened. I have been going to modern nails for over 20 years and obviously loved their nail services (hence the patronage.) However, I will never return after my experience a few weeks ago. Let's just say I was told I could *not* get the pedicure I wanted (after a very long week at work!) because my UV gel appointment was too soon. Now I have spent thousands (!!) of dollars here and had been coming every 2 weeks for services! How dumb can the owner be to decline the services I wanted and embarrass me in front of my daughter and a full salon of customers.l?! Also, I witnessed the nail tech who I was rushed to get my manicure with had *NO ONE* coming in for her services for over a half an hour after my appointment (while I finally got my pedicure!) The whole thing felt like a bad movie. I work in the city and found a wonderful salon, with much better customer service and better quality manicures instantly. Wish I had read the reviews prior to coming here. Just reading how people have been treated makes me upset that I gave them my business. When I walked in, the woman at the front looked at me with zero smile- in fact, she barely greeted me. I told her I had an appointment, and she honestly glared at me. She was really rude - it was so odd. I sat down to get my manicure, and I came here solely because they carry Dazzle Dry. I only get DD manicures and have been for years. My manicure itself was fine- pretty good shape, etc., although she did cut my cuticles way too much (I got nervous she would make me bleed as she was cutting too much skin). Once she started painting, I realized she had ZERO knowledge of Dazzle Dry. The entire system is based on letting each coat DRY. Otherwise, it just peels off.... I had to ask her to wait 10 seconds more- she was rushing to get the next layer on. I tried to let her know the whole thing will come off if you don't do it correctly. At the end, she brought me over to a dryer and turned it on. The entire basis of Dazzle Dry is NO DRYER after your topcoat. She was like, its ok! I was like, "No, it's not - this will ruin the entire manicure". I decided to go on the website to show the manager, and she actually argued with me. I was like, "This is the actual Dazzle Dry website - it states any drying agent or dryers should not be used and will cause the DD system not to dry properly". She did not care for my feedback/advice to help her staff..... Lo and behold, one day later (today) one of my fingers just had the entire top peel off... I dont get why you would carry a product that people pay extra for and then not want to use it correctly... to get repeat customers. Not to mention, why is your front desk person completely awful? This was my first time here coming here from FL. I walked in last Monday and got a pedicure and dip nails with gel polish and chrome. Nails were done 8 days ago- dip with gel polish and chrome. Chipping on my left pointer finger and right thumb and had both my middle finger nails snap off completely ( the left one I had completely redone and replaced at the beauty bar on Sunday since the store was closed) These are my real nails and I've been getting dip for years and never had this ever happen. I originally came in prior to a wedding event I was attending looking for a specific color and asked if we could do a sample before it's on my nails to see if it matched was told to wait until the end to see it . It was a completely different color but I decided it was pretty so it was ok and as long as my nails at least lasted. I didn't appreciate the lack of transparency on that aspect. If you don't have the color no big deal just tell me so I can choose accordingly especially if I'm trying to match an outfit. I paid $200 and tipped of course all in cash. The reason I'm writing my review is due to my phone call I just ended with the owner to let them know of these issues . I work in customer service and am very understanding However I was not treated with that same understanding. Any nail salon I've ever been to in the 10+ years that I've gone to nail salons would say come in please free of charge and we will fix all your nails. He let me know that Nails would not be covered. And that chip he'll do for free within seven days however I did not plan on getting my nails done again for three weeks. This is a major inconvenience and I will be taking my business elsewhere. I was loyal to this place for 5 years mostly because it's across the street from my apartment. the management is less than friendly to the point where the 1 time I needed to cancel a few hours before my appointment I was lectured about not canceling on short notice and that they would not take my appointment if i did it again. also went in to use the ATM one day and was told its for customers only. id been going there every 3 weeks for 3 years at that point. today i had to cancel (for the 2nd time in five years) and was lectured again despite my apologies. won't be going back to be abused by a nail salon any longer. the techs also often got mad that I wanted short nails because its more work. goodbye! read more

Can't say I have anything good to say about this place. First time I came in my dip powder polish started to lift less than a week after having them done and completely came off a few days later. Wanted to give them a second chance and see if it was maybe just the woman who did my nails. Second time I got dip powder my nails lifted after 5 days. I went back since the dip polish completely came off one nail. As soon as I came in I was questioned on what I was doing that my nail broke, mind you I was just washing dishes. I had to cancel due to a schedule change at work, so I called to reschedule and was told by the owner (who is awful by the way) that because I canceled the same day, the nail tech now had nothing to do for 1.5 hours and I would never be allowed to make another appointment. What??!! AND..AND they have signs all over the salon charging extra for shaping nails with a file, if you book with a specific nail tech you are expected to give them at least 20% gratuity. I've been here a few times, and it feels like a rollercoaster. Sometimes there are highs, and sometimes there are lows. Mostly lows though. The pedicures are great - no complaints there (tip - it's $25 for a regular mani/pedi Mon-Wed). But the manicures are hit or miss. Regular manis, anyway. It's kind of like that time you tried to give yourself bangs, thinking you'd look like Taylor Swift, but came out looking like Johnny Depp from Willy Wonka instead. I had Nelly one time time and she didn't know how to file nails. I asked for an almond shape and instead, she gave me half round/half square. I tried to get her to fix it but she only ended up filing my nails even shorter, which I didn't want. PLUS, she made me BLEED. So I was really afraid of getting an infection at that point. HOWEVER, I must say, their gel nails are great. (DISCLAIMER- I only got them once here). At least if you get them with Gloria. My girl, Gloria. She really puts effort into her work. In fact, I ended up getting engaged after Gloria did my nails. Not saying there's any correlation, but...(lol). I'm actually typing this review right now, running the risk of ruining my newly manicured mediocre nails. That's how passionate I felt about updating this review. I've been going to Modern Nails regularly (every 3 weeks) since 2018 & I'm not going back. Over the past few years it's been getting worse and worse. I overtip by a lot (server Karma) and I tipped more than my service to the nail technician who has become my friend in Nov 2020. It was via Venmo (which they no longer accept) so they saw it come through. Ever since then, they have been extremely rude to me. Then in the summer 2021 while I was out of work, not getting paid, I tipped a normal amount. And the male owner told me it wasn't enough. I was shocked. It was certainly 20%. But why are they commenting on my tipping? They should be grateful that I am a loyal customer (or was) and tip anything at all. Maybe if their employees depend on tips so badly, they should start paying them more. It's not my responsibility as a consumer to compensate for their shitty payroll. I mentioned it to my trainer and my hair salon owner who both know me well, and are business owners in Hoboken. They were both shocked since I certainly don't have a tipping problem, the owner of my hair salon said she had heard the same exact thing from someone else just that week. So that means that they are doing that regularly. The owner of my hair salon said I should write a review. You will note at quick glance of the reviews, Melanie M shared the same feedback on 5/15/21. During the same time period in 2021, they instituted a $10+ Fee (at their discretion) if you come to get your UV/Gel refill more than 3 weeks after the last service. Which is just ridiculous - they already charge you if your nails are broken between visits so why the additional fee? Then as of March 2022 they stopped accepting Venmo as a form of payment for tips. They obviously did their FY21 Taxes & it looks like they made significantly more revenue than they did since the Venmo was associated with their business. So they put up signs EVERYWHERE that said, Cash Tips Preferred. Any tips on a Credit Card was subject to a surcharge at their discretion. I needed to Tip one day on my CC and they fought me about it. But it's written EVERYWHERE that you can use your CC for tips, but there will be a fee. I was willing to pay a fee for convenience. I thought about not going back after that but, I really like the girl who does my nails, they are clean and the service aside from how they treat their customers is good. The next time I walked in the owner called me by name and told me that I needed to pay my tip in cash. I said I was very aware. RUDE. I walked in today 3 weeks since my last visit & noticed now there are signs that give an incentive to use cash & TIPS ONLY IN CASH in bold letters. Clearly I was not their only feedback from the original arbitrary ruling. And moreover it's 2022, consumers have more choices than ever. Why can't I use my payment method of choice? Aside from this small business trying to evade taxes or not paying their employees a livable wage. Then I began chatting w the girl in the chair next to me. 9/10 times I keep to myself but on occasion I chat. And for context the Salon was BUMPING - it was a Friday night before Mother's Day weekend so it was nail time. It was loud, there were lots of people talking loudly, in addition to water running everywhere at the pedicure stations, & machines buzzing to remove UV/Gel. So we were not the problem. Meanwhile, SO many people were having conversations at the same volume if not louder, and nobody said a thing to them. There was a girl seated directly next to the owner's desk & I could hear every word of her conversation. He didn't say one word to her. The last time I was there a woman was talking so obnoxiously loud about everything including but not limited to the man she was w & his major toenail fungus issue. GROSS. So why single me out. One of the reasons I kept coming back was due to the nail technicians who are absolutely wonderful humans. But the management treats them like second class citizens, taking advantage of their situations and not giving them any paid time off to be with their families. They live from check to check so it's not like they can take time off without being paid. That in and of itself is egregious, but that's unfortunately how Asian-owned nail salons treat the non-Asian workers in every nail salon, in every city I've visited across America. It's mind boggling to me that they think they are the only nail salon in town that people can choose to patron. The only reason they are even on the map is because Kim K (who is the worst) went there in 2010. WHO THE F CARES?? They need a lesson in small business management, as well as etiquette in how to treat customers, loyal or not. They are beyond rude and I will not go back there again. I have been going to this nail salon for over 10 years bc I have in grown toe nails and not everyone helps me correctly. (I live out of town) The owners have always been extremely rude but I loved my nail tech. She was the best ! I was making appointments for a regular mani and pedi (short nails) with the same person for 7 years biweekly. One day she just disappeared & no one would tell me where she went or what happened, I asked ! She could be dead god forbid. So I went & had a new person do it & thought she did well, so I tried to make an appointment with her and they said they don't take appointments anymore. Weird. I went again got another person and asked her if I could make an appointment with her and she said yes. 5/5 of the last time I called they say she's not working . Only after I ask for the appointment though. Today I called & asked for an appointment & they said yes surprisingly until I asked for a pedicure they said no "It's our store policy it's strict". So I can't get a regular pedicure and manicure with my preferred nail tech. They think cause they did Kim Kardashians mani in 09 they are better than the customers that actually sustain their business. Owner was extremely rude on the phone. It doesn't make any sense to not allow returning customers to make appts with their preferred nail tech. The customer will always be satisfied, when u force them to go to someone else is when issues arrive. They treat me like they're doing me a favor by letting me pay for a service. My mani pedicure takes less than an hour to do and I pay the regular price I don't see the issue. They lost a loyal customer. This place was dissatisfying. I came here for a regular mani pedi since I was a bit desperate during COVID shut down. They took my friend and me as walk-ins. We initially intended to be there just for pedicures. I appreciated the measures they put in place for distancing: at least every other chair empty, everyone masked, and clear curtains/partitions to separate you from your nail technician for both mani and pedi. My pedicure was great. We then added on a manicure which was... meh. My manicurist wore gloves, but it was clear that she had already been wearing them. They were stained with other nail polish colors. Wearing gloves is useless (and even less hygienic at times) if you don't change them or perform hand hygiene between people. I also didn't like the texture when she gave me a quick hand massage (although this was very quick and barely there). The manicure itself also wasn't good - it's particularly evident as they start to grow out and you see the jagged bottoms. She did an incredibly sloppy job. Be prepared to not have the means to sit under a dryer after you're done. They've suspended this as a result of COVID; probably to limit anyone "hanging out" around the facility. Understandable. The various people at reception (some of who were the owners themselves), while not overtly rude or inappropriate, were very cold and dismissive. I felt treated as though I'm a nuisance, rather than someone giving them business. I may come back for a pedicure, and perhaps gel mani (based on other yelper's pictures), but only if desperate. Came in for the first time for a UV Gel nail set and everything from management to my actual nails was a bad experience. I have been getting UV gel nails for 6 years and they always last me up to 5 weeks with no issue. Two weeks went by and my nail broke In half when putting my earrings on. I called them to ask if I could come in quickly to fix it and the man said I'm too busy then said "Well you're paying if you come here". I said I have no problem paying as it's been two weeks but I need this fixed. He proceeded to say he won't fix my nail, it's been two weeks and I need to pay for a whole new set. On top of this when at the salon the man in the front said my name. Thinking it was my turn I stood up and he put his hand in my face and told me to sit. It's a shame I have to review this place so poorly. I really wanted to love this shop as it is conveniently located just a few minutes from my house. The nail techs are kind and professional, however the owners are crass and rude. They're rude to their staff as well as to paying customers. Both times I've gone I've been badgered about HOW MUCH I'm tipping. My last visit, I left a tip of $12 and the male owner said "that's it? That's for everyone that worked on your nails?" I was confused and said yes this is for both nail techs. He replied "I was expecting more but I'll take care of them." It's humiliating and uncalled for. My tip was 10% of my service - which is standard for NAILS. You would think you were being waited on hand and foot with champagne the way these owners act. I went 4 days with a regular manicure without a chip. How????? And on day 5, when chips actually did start to show, they were so tiny I didn't feel the immediate need to grab the acetone and wipe them clean again. It was an impulse mani/pedi while on a walk down Washington and I'm so happy I tried Modern Nails! They had many colors to choose from and, although I didn't get the Essie long wear, they had such a big selection. Most salons I've been to carry about 20 long wear colors tops. After taking way to long looking at colors, only to choose my usual beige that I love so much, I got started on my pedicure. Everything was perfect. For a basic pedicure, I got a hot stone treatment, a really nice leg and foot massage, and plenty of time soaking in the nice warm water. Feet are still looking great (for feet) a week later. The manicure was just as great. I asked her to cut and file to get all my nails down to the same length because a few broke, so they are shorter than I would like, but still look amazing. Again, she took plenty of time too shape, push and cut cuticles and give a little hand massage. Lovely and relaxing and nails are still looking wonderful. When I sat at the drying station, I got a quick back massage and left feeling amazing, all for $25 + tip. I will absolutely be back. read more

RUDE, RUDE, RUDE OWNERS! I've been coming to this place for over a year. I get a manicure every week and a mani/pedi every two weeks. I usually pay between $25-40 for a manicure because I like to do fun designs and use all of their top line polishes. When you make an appointment on a weekly basis the owner should know you by name. You come in for your appointment, he and his wife don't even greet you. They simply tell you "wash your hands" and move on the next person. Their attitude towards customers is very snooty and they act like you're a bother. There is a lot of potential at this salon considering most of the staff does a good job on your nails. However, if they take too long their boss stands behind them and rushes them to finish. I remember one time he actually swapped my girl out because she was taking long and wanted another girl to just hurry finish my nails. Another time he tried to charge someone 20% tax because she asked to put tip on her card when he should've simply turning her down. This review is not for customers, it's for the owners. YOU NEED TO DO BETTER! Your customers keep you in business. Even with your insane inflation price increases, I don't mind paying a high price for good quality work, but you don't appreciate all or the people who come to your salon. Been going here for a few months and liked it up until my last manicure. I got a dip manicure with ombre french - they charged me $50 for the dip and another $20 for the ombre french for a total of $70 for a manicure. Within two days, my nails started turning yellow. I got my nails done right before vacation, so when I went back two weeks later when I returned and showed them how yellow my nails were, they told me that's what happens with dip in the sun. Are you kidding???? It's August. So I can't put my nails in the sun in August without them turning yellow? Never heard of that. The owners couldn't have been more rude and were going to CHARGE me to remove the dip. They acted like I was ridiculous for even asking them to fix it. It's pretty sad how many people have said on the reviews how nasty the owners are and yet they still act like they do. You can tell they aren't nice to their staff either. I'm torn.. I visited Modern Nails for the first time this weekend. They were able to get me in same day which I appreciated. I got a dip manicure with dip removal. My manicure looks great so far, but there were two unsanitary things I noticed that freaked me out: 1- The manicurist used the cuticle clippers on her own hands while my nails were soaking in acetone to cut her cuticle. She then used the same clippers on my hands. She did not wash or sanitize the clippers between. 2- The manicurist put a warm towel on my hands while the dip was soaking off, and then put the towel she used on me back into the heater. At the end of my appointment when she used another warm towel on my hands I noticed it wasn't clean (clearly!) I hope they readdress sanitary measures at their salon. I will probably give them one more try but if I notice the same practices I won't be able to continue giving them my service. Note - bring cash for tip. read more

If you work in Hoboken, this is a great spot for a 30min manicure (20min prep + mani, 10min drying). It's a little far from most of the large office buildings but the extra few blocks are worth it. The facility is very clean and the staff is nice. They're also very clear on pricing. $10 for a basic manicure and +$5 for a gel couture manicure (longer lasting). The polish assortment is good and is separated by polish type (basic, gel couture, gel). I always have trouble deciding between polish colors so I appreciate how nice they are about letting me try multiple. My only gripe is that the dryers are pretty old and outdated. If you sit there for less than 10 minutes, it's likely your nails won't be dry. I usually have to run the machine through at least two cycles before I even dare touch my nails. read more

My business wasn't enough. I'm sure everyone reading this review can relate. Sometimes you need the works: mani, pedi and massage. At other times you need your standard gel mani and pedi and every now and then your basic, regular mani. You try various establishments until you find one that you become a regular. As a regular you work various technicians until you find the ONE! Lol This past week I called to make an appointment for a regular mani with the technician I often revolve my schedule to make sure I see. When I told the owner I was looking to make an appointment with the technician for a reg manicure, he told me "that's all? They don't like to wait for small appointments"... in his defense he did offer another tech... I'm sorry but I took MY time to make an appointment with someone at your establishment to see a specific tech. In absolute disbelief that my appointment wasn't "enough" I hung up. But when you can pick and choose what you'll allow customers to make appointments on... well, you are no longer in recovery, you have recovered. I don't like writing negative reviews but this place is by far the worst in Hoboken. They didn't listen when i asked them to stop filing my nails down so much. They're now paper thin and painful. The nail tech acted annoyed when I told her it was painful Will not be going back ever. Go to Show nail - much better. read more

Wish I could give this place 0 stars. Owners are extremely rude. They don't explain their pricing at all and when you inquire about about how much they are charging you they are super short and get irritated . Loyalty means nothing to this business. Save yourself the trip! read more

The first time I went in the middle of the day, the people were pleasant, but the manicure was mediocre. The second time I went in the busy evening and the woman was extremely rude and nasty to me in front of everyone for no reason (probably because they were busy and she was overwhelmed, I don't know, but other reviews also point out the rude staff). I walked out and went to the one down the street where they are nicer and more professional. Will not be back here. Not sure how people manage to stay in business treating customers like that when there is competition next door and all around. read more

A few years ago, I stopped coming to this salon because of jacked up prices and the rude owners. After being fed up with other salons not getting the shape of my nails right, I came back. What a mistake. Now this salon is charging it's customers 3% on top of their services to use credit/debit cards. This is not the norm anywhere and shouldn't be accepted as the norm. Moved to Jersey from Queens and it is not easy to find great mani pedis in Jersey. Especially really great pedicures, are hard to find. This is the closest I've found to a great mani pedi in NJ. Gel was ok, didn't last too long but did look amazing for the first week. Regular mani pedi are really good and last. Deducted one star because they don't use disposable tools ( nail files, foot pumice etc) or line their sinks with plastic for individual customers. They do clean the sinks but it still feels like they could do better on this end. Great color options for nail polishes! read more

Love the work Rachel did for my UV gel fill. I got the color " s'il vous plaît" by Esse. This salon is on the pricier side but I haven't been disappointed with the outcome it's been worth it! read more
