This was my first visit to this business after several visits to other spas in the DC area. I decided to try it because of the Spa Week special they were running. I signed up for a 45 minute Swedish massage on Monday afternoon. From a male's perspective this spa is very lacking. The changing area is, in reality, a bathroom that has a set of lockers inside (think gas station bathroom and you get the picture). It is very small and only semi-clean. The massage itself was acceptable. Having had many I cannot say it stands out either way. What I can tell you is that a 45 minute massage service means that they try to have you in and out the door in 45 minutes, NOT on the massage table for 45 minutes... so buyer beware. Finally, I would like to correct a previous reviewer's message. There IS a relaxation room. It is easy to pick out because it's the very small room with office chairs lined up on each of the walls. After looking in and seeing about 8 people sitting elbow to elbow (some in robes, some fully dressed) I questioned how relaxing the room would truly be. The bottom line... McDonald's level service (and facilities) at a McDonald's level price; don't expect luxury and you will be satisfied. read more

I Stopped in on my stylist reccomendation to see her "Nail Lady". I saw NINA and she was great she was quick and my polish looks fantastic! I will definatly be back read more

What a great surprise! I live right next door and was hesitant to go in because it was located in the mall. I read a few reviews here on yelp and decided to give it a try. I first got a mani/pedi. It was a little pricey, but well worth it! It was a relaxing experience and it was really well done! It has been three weeks and my nails are still looking great! Also - everyone spoke and understood English. After a great experience with the mani/pedi, I called them to schedule a massage. I was having a lot of back/neck pain and they fit me in that evening. I have had a lot of massages because of my back problems and have to say that this was one of the best that I have had! Simone did a great job. I got a full tissue massage with aromatherapy. I will definitely be going back for more! The only reason I didn't give this a 5 star is because I haven't tried all the services out yet! Definitely check this out! read more

I've received services on and off from this location since 2011. And my last experience wasn't great ... I had to return for two services that where not amazing . Services received may 2 and May 5. Services applied for Gel Manicure using opi products : color mod over me read more

I frequent this place and it never ceases to amaze me. The staff are always so professional and willing to help and the massage therapists are dynamic. I do not have a favorite because they are all great! The wait time is usually no more than ten minutes so there's definitely no complaints. Treat yourself by coming here and you will not be disappointed! read more

Marijana gave me the best massage I've ever had this morning! She is thorough, professional and CLEARLY an expert in her field. I joked with the front desk that she ruined my day, because unlike past massages, I am too relaxed to run my errands. Looking forward to my next session with her. The reason I gave four stars instead of five is the changing area is smaller than I prefer. Other than that, everything about the experience was perfect. read more

I have been going to Modern Day spa for over 7 years. My nail technicians were Vivian, Tweet, and Nina. All were just fabulous I haven't had any problems I have received only 2 massages and 1 facial all the services are wonderful. Many may say pricing but you must pay for quality and good work for your beauty. I suggest coming once and try out all technicians because if you become a regular you want fantastic nails consistently by someone who knows your style. I have tried Christina, Angie (no longer there), and Charity really good nail technicians. read more

Christina does my mani and pedi. She does a fabulous job. I never worry about chipped nail polish because Christina makes sure that will not become an issue. I have been exclusively with Christina for about four years and I have never regretted my decision to become her client. Christina is a good person. She cares about your nails and she shares her wisdom. Due to the pandemic, I have not been to Modern Day Spa, but I AM GOING BACK REAL SOON!! read more

I visit here often to get a manicure and pedicure. I usually see Christina. I enjoy seeing her and the rest of the staff. Christina and Nina are the best for mani/pedis and for a very relaxing massage, Simone and Ruby are the best! read more

I have been a regular customer for several years now. The location is so convenient, the spa itself is comfortable and relaxing, and staff is always friendly and accommodating. I come here most often for waxing and facials and highly recommend Laura. With waxing she is steady yet gentle making the process as painless as possible. She is also great about keeping up a conversation to distract you! For facials she does a great job of always asking about how my skin is doing and will recommend products and services accordingly. I always feel like a valued customer and appreciate the personal attention and recommendations which is why I'm always happy to go back! read more

So I went into Modern Day Spa for the first time today for a mani/pedi. A friend asked me about my experience and these were my exact words, "It was nice. A bit over priced. I paid for the ambiance probably." The front desk attendant was courteous (although I never received the water I was offered) and I was promptly serviced even without an appointment. I was escorted to the lounge while I waited for the nail tech to service me. I only spent a few brief moments in the area but it was very serene. It was slightly misleading because the nail area was not as cozy (looked like your average nail shop to me...a little more dusty/cluttered than I'm used to). Tammy did a great mani/pedi and was very polite. Clean equipment was used with each client but that was nothing new to me. I also appreciated how I was asked if I wanted the razor to be used during the pedicure, the nail tech didn't just start slicing away at my heels. Also, I did not have to suffer through side conversation among the techs in their language and wonder if they were talking about me. That was refreshing. All in all my experience was just ok. For the price of a regular mani/pedi at this pretentious "day spa", I've received a deluxe mani/pedi at a cleaner suburban nail shop (minus the cozy lounge). read more

Prior to renovation the atmosphere was warm and private...post renovation feels more nail salon than spa. I went for a wax and was taken to small 10x10 room. The room was not very welcoming nor was it as clean as it should be. Bring back the spa experience! read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. I actually *hate* going to Modern Day Spa, which is not modern, nor really a spa. To get there, you have to park really far away at Pentagon City Mall or Pentagon Row, then fight the hordes on the escalator and walk through the food court (where Modern Day Spa is located). And it's not really relaxing either -- the "meditation room" (where you wait for services) has late 1990s furniture, an old rickety fan, and usually has used cups/napkins laying around. The drink station usually has water or watery lemonade ... if someone has even bothered to attend to it. And the actual mani/pedi stations are cramped and usually noisy/packed ... not to mention the fact that the entire place needs a huge scrubdown. In other words, step up the amenities and cleanliness, or take the name "spa" off the sign. The other downside is the idiotic front desk staff and management. It usually takes at least five minutes to call in for a simple mani/pedi appointment (and I am a regular customer). The manager never appears from the back room unless she is bugging the nail techs for a pedicure. She looks sloppy and unprofessional, and I can see how others have had problems with her. The *great* part about this place is the awesome nail techs. They are friendly and really know what they are doing. I usually go to Nina, who is a nail genius. No matter how ratty my nails are going in, she always makes them look beautiful -- total five-star treatment. Big ups also go to Christina, who I've visited when Nina isn't available. Bottom line -- Modern Day Spa gets 1 1/2 stars, but Nina and the nail staff get 5 stars. read more

I HIGHLY recommend not coming here for any sort of services!!!!!!! I had been here previously and so I decided to re-book an appointment with them. I booked my appointment for a Brazilian wax with Trang. The service seemed quite unprofessional. I was in the room and she just told me to take my clothes off. She didn't step out of the room or provide me with a towel or anything. After laying on the bed butt-naked, she began waxing me. I have had MANY waxes but this was by far the worst experience. It was so violently painful and unsanitary. There were no gloves used whatsoever and she was all up in that area. She put wax in a Dixie cup and wthen would periodically reapply so at this point, the wax had gotten cold and hard, therefore even more painful as she forcefully spread it on my Vajayjay area. She told me to roll over and did get this, ONE STRIP on my behind. and then said she was done. Let me tell you, it does not take one strip. Once she claimed she was done, I bolted out of there so fast to get away from the pain. I got home and examined the results only to see there were HUGE patches that she had missed. I'm talking blatant patches of hair that just looked horrific. Not to mention the lower part of my V was hardly completed and the behind was also not done well. I was so distraught after spending $70 for the service and including a generous tip of 20% as I always do, that I thought I had a right to call and speak to the manager about this. I called that evening and spoke to the receptionist who first off, denied allowing me to speak to the manager, and then would not provide me with her contact information. All she ended up telling me was that the manager's name was Rochelle. After telling the receptionist my horrid experience, which she agreed was bad, she offered to provide a free Brazilian to correct the matter. There is no way you could pay me to come back and go through that awful experience, voluntarily. I asked for a refund of the full price that I paid and was told the manager would call me back. It's been almost a week and no phone call. My credit card company has also tried reaching them 3 times and they refuse to respond. Great customer service Modern Day Spa! Charge an arm and a leg and not even fulfill good business practices to your customers. So quick to take your money but so slow to offer a decent remediation to the problem. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY! read more

They clearly do not appreciate the military even though in their menu of services they state military receive 10% off services except for nails and waxing mon-thurs. This did not happen, I received eyelash extensions which does not fall in any of the categories and did not receive the discount even after stating their own rules to them. Instead the front desk rep said well eyelashes were just added to our services as if this is my issue as to why they did not state that on their brochure. Military beware......last time for me. Next time they will be saying everything except nails waxing eyelashes water butt scrubs etc so what does that leave nothing! THEY DO NOT Have a military discount!!! This should be against the law to use the military to grow your business! :-( please share and take your business elsewhere. Overpriced for today's economy! read more

I was hesitant to try this spa out because it's located right by the food court in fashion center. I came here a few days after my Elizabeth Arden experience during Spa Week. They had a handful of discounted treatments as well and I opted for the Cherry Blossom massage for $45. The massage was excellent but this spa pales in comparison to Arden which is 2 blocks away. There is no relaxation room or dim lighting. It's a good spa if you're not looking for all those extras that you would get at a place like Arden but for me that attention to detail and anticipation of needs is equally as important as the results, quality and service. I didn't find that here. read more

I had been missing work because of issues with my sciatic nerve in my lower back so I decided to book myself a massage and most everywhere I called didn't have any availabilities for that day. Modern Day Spa was able to fit me in within the next hour so I rushed over there for my massage. The dressing room is tiny but the waiting area was comfortable and spacious and also had pamphlets about the other spa services offered there which I found helpful. I was introduced to my masseuse who I believe was named Carlos. Carlos led me into a room and told me to get into the covers. When he came into the room he began asking questions and I told him about my extensive back issues. He listened and gave me some advice. I had asked for a deep tissue massage but I also asked him to be mindful if it was too intense for me. He didn't really take that in mind as he repeatedly did the same painful motions over and over even when I told him that it hurt. If I complained he seemed annoyed that I my back was sensitive even though he already knew I'd just left the hospital less than two hours before. He also insisted on talking the entire time so that I never got a chance to relax. Worst of all, he made me feel uncomfortable by the way he kept massaging lower than I was comfortable with. I mentioned it but he paid little mind. He also kept pressing some area on my butt that caused me pain and asked me if it hurt. When I told him it did hurt, he didn't attempt to stop. He then asked if he could walk on my back which really consisted of him getting on all fours over me which just felt very uncomfortable. The massage itself wasn't bad though. Aside from the painful parts it was actually enjoyable but I wish the masseuse hadn't come off so creepy. The receptionist was friendly. read more

Three visits and still going back. Great massage that keeps me pain free, thanks Ana! Military discount Monday-Thursday too. Good atmosphere. read more

First wax ever--and I went all in and did a Brazilian. I set myself up by reading plenty of reviews and assuming I would either end up crying or faint because of the pain (I'm a big baby in other words). Long story short, Nina has me sold! No tears, no horror stories of wax being too hot and I love the outcome. Not sure what everyone whines about, but it doesn't hurt that much. Go see Nina she rocks. read more

Christina and Nina are great with waxing and I have been a loyal customer willing to drive 40 miles every week to go to them. Unfortunately the spa director and front desk people are unprofessional, throw their employees under the bus in front of the customer and have no idea how to provide customer service. I hope one of the technicians goes to a different salon or starts her own business so that I can go to them again. read more

decent spa, there is a relaxation room, contrary to an earlier posting, but it is tiny and fills up with waiting clients. the massages are pretty good, only had one that was awful and the eybrow waxing was good but i agree, they are pushy, always trying to add a service. The women who work at the front desk are really rude and lack for customer service skills. read more

An oasis if your National Airport flight is delayed, like mine. Disgusted by the lack of WiFi at National (It's 2007! and I REFUSE to call it the "R R") I hopped on the Metro over to Pentagon City. Right at the same level as the Metro is Modern. I had very low expectations, as it is in the food court, but I was blown away. In a warren of rooms, I was instantly calmed. I got a deep tissue massage for 20 minutes for ($20?), didn't have to take off my clothes, and left feeling soo....calmer. It's about a 5 minute metro ride from National and much better than eating another Dunkin Donut while waiting for your flight status to be updated. (My flight ended up being cancelled entirely) read more

I came here because I had a gift certificate and wanted to use for my wedding for me and my two friends. Sat down for a pedicure. As the girl was cutting my toe nails, she clips my skin. I yelped out in pain--enough so the entire place stopped to look at me. This girl had the nerve to laugh. Are you serious???? I got up and left. Not worth the time. There are plenty of other places. read more

I visited while on a business trip to DC last month. I was very happy that the location is in the mall, easy to find, just off of the food court. I went in for a polish change on my nails. That was $16, I could have kept in my pocket. She didnt really do anything, but remove my old polish, and just re-polished them. I was desperate for some back and neck pain relief, but unsure where to go in my new hood of Pentagon City. After reading most of the reviews for spas in the area, weighing the price and distance from my house I settled on Modern Day Spa. Boy am I happy I did. I had a Swedish Massage with Marilana and she was amazing! I absolutely will be going back. It is a relaxing environment and you do totally forget you are in the mall. Marilana is there Tues and Thur, so check her out, you will not be sorry. read more

Great facial and deep tissue massage by Ruby - I was having a horrible day and she made me feel a BILLION percent better. This would be five stars if it wern't in the mall - that being said, they have done a VERY nice job taking you away from the mall atmosphere, even if it is a little cramped. read more

Janna was very good (and strong for such a little thing!) As with all massages, the end arrives before you're ready, but she took care of all the problem areas. The price leaves you a little surprised considering the location and decor: $90/50 minutes. read more

After traveling for 30hrs from Australia to DC I was after a good deep tissue massage. Finding the modern day spa on Yelp was a relief. The staff were friendly and helpful and gladly fitted me in so I didn't have to come back. My masseur was Simone who was amazing, the perfect combination of relaxing and therapeutic. After telling Simone about my stiff neck and shoulders she focussed on these areas and made sure I left feeling relaxed and had flexibility back. Looking at the services they offer everything you want from a salon including waxing, manicures, pedicures and facials. I highly recommend and will return again. read more

If you're getting any of their waxing services, make sure you clarify whether your appointment is with a nail tech or an esthetician, as that determines what price you'll pay. I found this out the hard way my first time here. I wasn't informed until AFTER I had received their services. Then I was given attitude by the receptionists after I told them that information wasn't on their website. They then told me that I had to specify whether I wanted a nail tech or an esthetician when making an appointment. Which makes no sense, because I told them I had never been there before when I made my appointment, so there was no way I could've known to do that. The esthetician was extremely nice and did a great job. But I can't return to a place that encourages deceptive and behavior. read more

This place is ok. The prices are a little high but my french manicure did last more than a week.

I bought a gift certificate for a hot stones massage for my girlfriend. Things have been very stressful since she's getting ready to move and could enjoy some relaxing moments. This place made things worse, primarily due to incompetency scheduling appointments. She made an appointment and went over the appointment several times with the desk person and when she showed up, "your appointment is tomorrow". Not good since her time is limited. No offer for a refund, which would have been preferable since she now won't be able to squeeze in the time. She was basically forced to take a deep tissue which she didn't want and in an atmosphere that wasn't relaxing. Serious lack of professionalism at the most basic level, scheduling. An appointment confirmation would have been nice. read more

I am perplexed and in shock! Some time ago I received a text message explaining that Modern Day Spa was shutting down temporally to remodel. It took longer than was anticipated. During that time I moved further away and do not own a car. It is not terribly convenient for me to go to Pentagon City Mall. Two weeks ago when I called again to see about getting a massage and finish out my remaining services, I learned they have very limited staff and do not conduct these services on weekends or hours that work within my schedule. I asked about trading it for a facial, and was told that they only have one person and again it would not work schedule wise. I work long weekday hours. Since the services are still not available, I asked the reception staff to please have their owner, Lynn, call me as I wanted to discuss being credited for the three remaining sessions I had left. Crickets. I have called multiple times and emailed and no resolution or a courtesy call to try to resolve. I cannot believe this is the way someone would want to run a business and would treat a customer who waited patiently to try and reside services. I feel my money has been stolen and now how to go through means to obtain my money back. read more

I really wish I could write two reviews for this place. One visit was both a delight and otherwise. I felt like I was overcharged (~$30 plus tip) when I came in for a brow waxing and was told it was less. At the last minute they convinced me to try threading, which I agreed to, and that probably was the cause for the elevated price. After seeing many salons, the brow style was actually the best I ever had (loved it!!), although the stylist and I both agreed that both brows were UNEVEN-- one brow was a definite hair or two higher than the other. We couldn't really fix it without making the line a lot thinner. I absolutely loved the style; I just have no idea why the two brows (originally thick and bushy) were not measured to the same position on my face! I would be wary of coming back for 1) the pricing issue and 2) avoidable mistakes. read more

I've been going to this salon for 2 years and stopped for a couple of months on maternity leave. Well, wouldn't you know a surprise awaited me on my return visit, during what I thought was a much needed pedicure 3 weeks later turned into an infection in my cuticle area. Modern Nails and technician Kathy are not clean! I now have to take antibotics for 7 days to treat this infection, as if having a baby wasn't enough trauma to the body. Unbelievable! read more
