As someone who suffers from chronic neck pain, I really need someone who can get in the muscle deep. So when I say I need a deep tissue massage, I mean I need DEEP. Most of the time, I have to direct my masseuse what to focus on and what I need in terms of pressure and most of the time they listen. Unfortunately, that was not the case here. I was paired up with a female masseuse who was sweet enough in manner but didn't seem to speak much English so when I asked her to only focus on my neck or when I kept asking for deeper pressure, she was respond in agreement but then would proceed to continue doing what I asked her not to do. I specifically asked her to only focus on my upper back/neck area and not to do my whole body. She did work on my upper area but then proceeded to do the rest of my body when I asked her not to. I know they are trained to do full body massages but the purpose of getting a massage for a lot folks is to get some relief from pain or tight muscles with specific attention to problem areas. If I'm going to pay an inordinate amount of money for an hour massage, I'd rather not have it wasted on parts of my body I don't need worked on. Needless to say, I realized I can't get what I really need here, so while I appreciated the good service overall, I will continue my journey for a great masseuse elsewhere.

They've simply moved on and created this wonderful salon. We weren't previous clients, but their reputation definitely preceded them. On a Saturday around 4:00 PM, my wife and I decided on a spur-of-the-moment manicure and pedicure date. Anyone who regularly visits nail salons knows that's usually a recipe for disappointment. Either the salon is fully booked, the wait is outrageous, or you end up with the technician nobody else wanted. Thankfully, luck was on our side. I went online and found only two appointment slots remaining. We selected our services, submitted the request, and within five minutes our appointment was confirmed. Shortly afterward, we received a phone call confirming everything and letting us know we could even arrive a little earlier if we'd like. Our appointment was scheduled for 5:15 PM. N & J Nails is located in Alexandria, just a few minutes from Potomac Yard and on the same block as Founding Farmers. Depending on traffic, the 9-mile drive from our home can take anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour. Thankfully, we made it in just under 30 minutes. Parking was easy. There is both street parking and garage parking available. We chose street parking and paid $4 for two hours, but learned that garage parking can be validated. When we arrived, we were greeted by the same gentleman who had called to confirm our appointment. It wasn't the typical "you're the last appointment of the day, let's get this over with" greeting. It felt like they had genuinely been expecting us and were happy we were there. We were offered beverages and snacks, then settled into the massage chairs for our pedicures. My wife worked with Tina while I had Linda. After reviewing the menu and confirming our selections, they made a few recommendations and got started. My wife chose a spa manicure and spa pedicure with gel polish and builder gel to help strengthen and grow out her natural nails. My service included callus removal, nail trimming and shaping, cuticle care, orange slices, a sea salt and mint mud foot mask, relaxing massage treatments, oil lotion massage, and hot towels. The total before tip was approximately $250 for both of us. Before Linda began, I warned her that I'm extremely ticklish. I usually end up asking technicians to skip the foot massage because it's never enjoyable. Not this time. For the first time ever, I was actually able to enjoy a foot massage. Linda clearly knew exactly what she was doing. There were a couple brief moments during the callus removal that tickled a little, but compared to every other pedicure I've received, it was minimal. The scrub, water temperature, calf massage, foot massage, and overall technique were absolutely perfect. The finished pedicure was flawless. Smooth feet. Perfectly trimmed and shaped nails. No pain. No bleeding. No rushing. What impressed me most was her attention to detail. Even after I would have been completely satisfied, she continued checking, refining, and perfecting her work. She clearly takes pride in what she does. The manicure was equally impressive. Every nail and cuticle received the same level of care and precision. Nothing felt rushed. Everything looked clean, polished, and professional. The hand massage was fantastic as well. I actually started writing this review on Saturday but intentionally waited until Monday to finish it because I wanted to see how everything held up. Two days later? Still perfect. My wife wrote her own review specifically for Tina, but she was equally impressed. Both Tina and Linda were exceptional. Throughout the appointment we shared laughs, had great conversation, and by the end it felt less like visiting a business and more like spending time with people who genuinely care about their clients. Even Ben stopped by toward the end and joined the conversation. That's what makes N & J Nails special. The services were excellent. The salon was spotless. Throughout our visit, staff continuously cleaned and maintained the space. The atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and relaxing. Most importantly, every person there genuinely seemed to care about delivering the best experience possible. There were only three workers, which I understand, but it was still frustrating to wait that long with an appointment. The pedicure also felt rushed. Usually you get lotion and a little massage, but none of that was included. At that point I just wanted to get my nails done and leave. For my manicure, the technician used a portable UV lamp that made my nails burn. It was really uncomfortable, and he didn't seem concerned when I mentioned it. I got a French tip, and you could clearly see my nail beds through the polish. When I told him I wasn't happy with how it looked, he just said it was my natural nail instead of trying to fix it. The most disappointing part was the quality. I tipped, left, and in less than 24 hours my thumbnail had already chipped. That has never happened to me before not even when I do my own nails at home. I ended up going to a nail salon in South Carolina, and they immediately told me the nails weren't done well and that they wouldn't last. They also added a better nude base color so you couldn't see my nail beds anymore, which made a huge difference. That showed me that my nails could have been done correctly at Old Town Nail & Spa, but they simply weren't. They also told me more chipping was likely to happen. I paid a lot of money because I wanted my nails to look nice for a wedding that weekend, and instead I got poor-quality nails and disappointing customer service. Sadly, I won't be coming back.

i came in because it was one of the first salons suggested whenever i googled salons nearby. i came…read morein and the lady in the front was nice and helpful, but then i sat down for the pedicure and a younger girl started preparing it. it was evident she's new, and was getting guidance from the lady that was in the front. but then after the first minute or so she didn't get any more help. she was moving very slow, and that makes sense if she's super new. but also... she should have consistent supervision. another customer walked in 5-10 minutes after she started my pedicure and asked for a mani/pedi... by the time she was getting her toes painted my tech JUST started the massage. it was 50 minutes in by then. two other technicians walked by multiple times. looked and saw how long it was all taking and didn't say a word. they went to the back and started laughing a bunch. the front desk lady left the building at this point. i had to direct the girl and tell her what needed to be done. my leg and foot massage was only about 70-90 seconds long (the main reason i even get pedicures). ultimately a huge waste of $55+ also i asked her to make my nails short and flat.... she made them round. when i pointed it out she goes "but you said to make them short?" and proceeded putting clear polish on. finally... painted with the white polish getting it all over the skin. tried taking it off the skin with a brush but it was on too long. then started putting the top coat on. Emerald Massage is a hidden gem. Tucked away on Duke St, its a most needed respite from the hustle and bustle. From the moment you walk in, the front desk is eagerly awaiting to welcome you in with hot teas and water. Each room settles you in with some proper mood lighting, a warm comfy massage bed, and relaxing music setting the ambience. As someone who suffers not only from chronic shoulder/neck pain, but also cPTSD and anxiety, I can't stress enough how the much the environment also soothes my stress level down already. I am able to place myself in a much more relaxed state when Im here. The massage therapy I've received here has been superb - I've gotten hot stone, cupping and acupressure done along with alot of scented oil and soothing balm treatment that have truly helped alleviate my body aches and ailments. What a hidden gem! Emerald Massage Center in Arlington is great. Amanda and Grady both are excellent, and Amanda in particular does wonders with deep tissue work. The rates are excellent, especially packages. I particularly appreciate everything they've done with their COVID precautions... The massage center is just one private room, they have HEPA filters, are good on masks and leave plenty of extra time for cleaning between guests. You can book everything online which makes finding appointments super easy and their billing is all electronic (they also do insurance receipts if that is something you need). This place is such a hidden gem, I almost missed it the first time. It's located on the second floor, on the same level as the barbershop. I arrived a few minutes early for my appointment and was able to use their bathroom across the hall to freshen up before my massage, which I really appreciated. All of the staff are female, and as a woman booking online and getting a random therapist, that made me feel very comfortable right away. My masseuse was incredibly kind and helpful, she asked which areas needed extra attention, which I thought was very considerate and thoughtful. Even though I didn't add any extras, my massage included hot stones, which was amazing and honestly such a nice surprise since that usually costs extra elsewhere. She also used heating pads on my back and even gave me a relaxing head and hair massage. After the massage, they gave me free slippers and a 2026 calendar, which was such a sweet, unexpected touch. The price alone makes this place stand out: $85 for a 60-minute deep tissue massage, which is significantly more affordable than most other massage spots in the area and the quality and cleanliness was absolutely there. I left feeling relaxed, cared for, and like I truly got my money's worth. It takes mere minutes into a first visit to understand why, as one's stress and tensions are elbowed and squeezed and cupped out of various muscles in the shoulders, neck, back, arms and legs by the expert ream of licensed massage therapists, many holding licensure not just in Virginia but also in their home country of mainland China. QQ1 Spa is the vision of group leader Jenny, who manages the daily operations, oversees the three other female massage therapists (also from China, and also dual-licensed), and who steps in during peak times to help with client requests for everything from 4-handed massages to couples therapy to "cupping." The latter uses-- you guessed it-- several small-teacup-sized cups but translucent and without handles-- to draw blood to the surface of the skin to help drain it from knots creating muscle tension. Jenny and her staff -- including Emily, Eva and a fourth therapist -- are all wonderful treasures. When one enters QQ1, one immediately sees each team member's government-issued massage therapy licenses, each one up-to-date with state and local municipality renewal permits required to remain in good standing. A pain in the tush, to be sure. A great chance for people to grouse about the bureaucracy creating needless layers of guvmint spending to the burdens of American workers. Well, yes. But. There is value to the community good in having laws that, when followed by the citizens, show the patriotic zeal these most recent of Americans display to ensure their credentials are noted by current and prospective new clients when they enter the front door. Choosing "QQ1" as the spa's name was a nod to the Chinese cultural tradition of using certain numbers and letters in business titles to help enable good fortune and prosperity. QQ1 is on-brand to telegraph a message of trust to consumers. Perhaps akin to American small businesses that use such titles as A1, Best, and Top Service, among others. It's so endearing that any modern small business would invest such thought and care into these details. Yet QQ1 has. And it shows in their scheduling flexibility when a new client first calls to see if any appointments are open for a new client's unexpected back pain flair-up. Which is surely going to be exacerbated by the added pain in the neck of trying to find a quick available time to get a professional therapist treatment. Which makes it great to know that I when you call QQ1 they will say: just drive over. They handle this type of thing all the time. How often can anyone say they actually leave a retail establishment feeling so much better than they did when they came in?
