I've been to two Modern Animal locations (Berkeley and Walnut Creek) and both have been amazing. This review is just for the Berkeley office. It's located right next to Café Réveille near all of the cute Fourth Street shops and Makers' Row. It's easily accessible on the 51B! We were promptly greeted and seen by the staff at the office, which was so clean and well-decorated with cute art on the walls and interesting coffee table books. It's always a plus when they offer us La Colombe cold brews and La Croix too! Our vet tech, Bethany was absolutely amazing at making our kitten Barbie (and us) feel welcomed by giving her a Churu stick and playing with her. She was able to get Barbie's vitals in a seamless manner. Her manner with animals was even more apparent when she vaccinated Barbie without a hitch! We didn't hear a single meow from her and she's normally quite vocal when it comes to these things. When it came down to payment, Bethany made sure to inform us of pricing before any vitals were taken or any vaccines were administered. The pricing transparency is one of the best features of a Modern Animal clinic since everything is listed on their website/app and the staff make sure to tell you how much everything costs at various points of your appointment. Sasha's 1st Vet Visit @ Modern Animal Highly recommend - best vet experience I've, or more importantly Sasha, has ever had. Previous vet experience: had to hold her in my arms to even walk in the building, shaking like a 6pt earthquake, heavy panting and would not eat even her most fav high value treats..and while of course on leash, tried to run for the door, straining to get away if she was put on the floor, tail tucked so far under it disappeared. Always a traumatic experience. I was afraid she'd keel over from the stress every appointment. Modern Animal experience: We did a 'happy visit' a couple weeks ago prior to her first appointment: it was filled with awesome treats and lots of sniffs around. Today for our real first appointment, I opened the door to the clinic and she walked right in (on leash), happily got up on the scale and did all her tricks in the exam room for the vet technician and no tucked tail! She will be on a diet the rest of the day after all the treats she got! This was my second visit, with a cat who was not the first patient they saw. I scheduled again with Doctor Downer, as my initial experience with her was very positive. I found her again to be approachable and down to earth The app based information allows greater and faster access to the pets file, and corresponding available services. I use the pay as you go plan as I have many cats but it is nice to know the other plans are available if I have one that requires more than occasional visits Speaking to overall satisfaction, of course #1 is the chemistry with the doctor, but they seem to have eliminated the stress associated with self- important second and third tier personnel, that I found to be all to frequent with almost all the other vets that I have utilized. I have lived in the area 35 years, and tried almost all within a 15 mile rage at one time or another and dealing with some self important gatekeeper when you have a sick pet on your hands is not desirable. The reception there is very relaxed and friendly, and the doctors assistants have been great. So far I am very satisfied with this practice. read more

5 visits across 2024-2025. It will be my last with our dog. The last visit - we came early, on time but was delayed for 20mins. My dog was getting anxious. What I used to love about this clinic is the connection - friendly staff who tried to connect with my dog and not needing to explain again and again - we came so often and they write so many notes but this time, it never seem to register the type of clients they got. The goal has always been to come in and go to reduce wait which has been consistent with this clinic. Second, technician was not friendly to both me and my dog. Always had to explain why my dog needs a muzzle, may feel anxious. Honestly this is so tiring and doesnt feel like a place I want to return. We dont feel welcomed. Third, There is a discount for vaccinations this month of February and I am really annoyed that the technician didn't even bring it up... had to deal with this after charging to card. read more

It was great to see an experienced vet on short notice. Don't like the model of no contact with in-house staff, only someone remote. (I don't buy the "the staff are busy with patients" story.) Needed a urinalysis for my pet but was charged a higher fee than stated on their website. The remote staffer asked me to send a screen shot to prove the discrepancy. This is my number one priority when finding a vet - someone that can patiently listen to my concerns about my beloved benji (my cat) and to offer safe solutions. Other reasons why this place is great is the customer service, the modern interior design, and the ease of selecting your appointments through their app. This is the new wave of making vet appointments for your pets. Also I got the package deal of spending 200$ one time and getting unlimited free vet exams for the year. I made a first time appointment and realized I need to cancel it. I've attempted to phone them over 4 times and never able to reach an actual person regardless of all prompts/phone tree possibilities.I was even told I was reaching out outside of office hours despite the fact that it is 1pm on a Thursday. I also tried to find a way to cancel it by clicking the cancel/modify link on confirmation email which led me nowhere. Because I am unable to cancel this appointment I will contest the no/show late cancellation fee via my credit card. I would never use this clinic as I communication is impossible. I will preface by saying that I really love this vet and the business model. They have been nothing but mostly lovely. In June during a visit for vaccines and pre dental appointment screening they went ahead and signed me up for the All Access plan for $199/year without asking me. When I saw it on the bill I was totally ok with this because I think it is a good plan for my pet. They also gave me a quote for the dental work to be done in September that showed a 10% discount for booking the dental exam the same day. After the dental work was performed in September the bill came and the price was the highest price with no discount. I tried and tried and tried to discuss this with the vet tech who wrote the proposal and she was so unhelpful. I even printed out the estimate and brought it in to show her which she promptly disappeared in the back room with the estimate and never returned it to me. This conversation took place in the waiting room with other clients listening and was so embarrassing. She acted like she had no clue what the discount on the estimate was for and literally ignored me. I ended up paying full price, $2500. Fast forward 2-3 weeks later my poor pup is itching like crazy and crying and his skin is so irritated. I was able to get a last minute Sunday appointment in Walnut Creek, thankfully. My little guy had picked up a skin infection, most likely from the Berkeley clinic during his procedure. They helped us with some meds that worked like magic. Upon our visit we realized we didn't have virtual care on our app that comes with the $199 per year membership. When we would click on Virtual Care it asked us to upgrade our plan in order to use that feature although I had already paid for the most expensive plan in June. The tech was so awesome in Walnut Creek and took a look and figured everything out. We were supposed to get a 10% discount on our dental procedure and the Berkeley Modern Animal that charged me for the All Access plan NEVER ACTIVATED IT!!! Once the Walnut Creek tech figured it out everything made sense. The tech in Berkeley was clueless and had no idea how to listen to me or help me. So frustrating. The Walnut Creek tech went ahead and applied the discount and activated the All Access membership. I reached out to the Berkeley location about this and they still seemed confused and act like they don't care. It's scary because I am trusting them with my loved pet and it feels like a lot of smoke and mirrors and money grabbing. I would suggest paying close attention to this location and their incredible confusing billing and additions that they just add without telling you. It definitely doesn't feel good to be taken advantage of. read more

I almost never write reviews, but I feel compelled to this time because they truly deserve it. Every aspect of their business is extremely well-thought-out and organized. The staff and veterinarians are super friendly and very mindful of your time, providing the fastest service possible. They are thorough in the information they share and genuinely try to understand all your and your pet concerns. I must say that my dog, Ila (a 4-year-old rescue mix), was very comfortable, which is unusual since she typically freaks out at vet clinics. This was the cleanest vet clinic I've ever been to, and they never tried to convince me for unnecessary services. They explained everything they could do, discussed the pros and cons, and let me decide what I thought was right. Finally, while some people might think it's expensive, I found their prices comparable to other clinics I called. In fact, they were either about the same or just $10 more. Given the quality of service and the comfort we experienced during our visit, I believe they offer great value for the price, possibly even cheaper than many other places. read more

My cat has historically been quite fractious during vet visits and I usually put them off as long as I can because I hate to see her so distressed. Dr Royalty and the two techs who were present at my visit went above and beyond to employ fear-reducing strategies, and I've never seen her tolerate procedures so well as she did today. Everyone was patient, knowledgeable, and transparent about costs upfront (as well as flexible regarding which procedures I wanted to deal with later). I also love how streamlined the app is-- they handled the transferring of medical records for me, and it's made it really easy to see what my cat's care plan going forward will look like. Had our first visit here this week but have been using the app over the last few months for basic questions The app is great and so easy to use. They are super responsive as well! As for the location in Berkeley. Love the convenience of the location near 4th Street. So easy to get to The facility is beautiful and (of course) modern The wait time was super short. We were m the first appointment of the day Our nurse and vet were super nice and thorough Pricing is really transparent. They walk you through all the charges and why. My FAVORITE part that no other vet I've been to... they upload the full summary of the visit to your app. Most places just send you a bill and you need to call them later for an explanation in case you need for your records or your pet needs to go to a specialist, etc. Lovely experience and great service read more

Dr. Downer gave our 2 dogs excellent care with a gentle, thorough and skilled treatment. She left plenty of time for us to ask questions and we were not rushed at all--which usually happens at other clinics. Plus, the rooms are clean, staff offer beverages to the human clients, and appointment times are honored. read more

If you want to get your pet in to see a vet right away, Modern Animal is an ok option. But that's really the only thing going for this business. If you want timely lab results, go to another vet. If you want to speak to your vet about your animal, meds, lab results, etc, and not play what feels like a game of telephone in the app, go somewhere else. read more

We had our second visit to Modern Animal this past Thursday with out big brave (not) Malinois who is petrified of vets. Dr. Downer and her nurse, Anari, were fantastic. They had him relaxed and accepting their care within 10 minutes. No problem with his blood draw or multiple vaxes either. They spend the time they need to - what difference from our human treat 'em and street 'em system. The clinic, like the first visit, was spotless, not overcrowded and the appointment was almost right on time! Berkeley location can't be beat with easy parking in a very nice building. They even have a porthole window on each exam room and write the "patient's" name on it. There is a comfortable bench in the exam room with room for my wife and I to sit down. Dr. Downer appears to be truly knowledgeable and a very competent diagnostician. We regret the passing of our previous vet and their closure but couldn't be happier with Modern Animal. And another shoutout to Anari, the tech who assisted Dr. Downer. She did the blood draw and vaxes with such care and gentleness that our 11 year old Mal didn't flinch. Included in the labs was a urinalysis. The last time we needed a urine sample it took a week of following him around to actually get the sample. Not at Modern Animal! Anari actually walked around the neighborhood with us with a cup on pole and patiently waited for the right opportunity, successfully got the sample and we were done! We were just stunned in a very positive way. And she was a delight to work with as well just like Dr. Downer. Wow! Can't recommend these folks highly enough. BTW, the app works great, appt are available in an impressive time frame in this time of vet shortages and you can do everything except treat your pet with the app! And their pricing is quite reasonable not withstanding the annual plan of unlimited exams for $200 per year. I sure hope their business model has the legs for long term success because this is the best vet experience we have ever had and we are serious dog people (my wife's hobby for many years was dog sport and training). Wow! This is the first time my dog was excited to go the vet. Upon entering, you're greeted by warm energy from the front desk and a beautiful lobby. Check-in was very seamless and we were seen right away for my dog's check-up. I really appreciated how empathic and patient the staff was and their transparency about the whole process. We took our cat to Modern Animal for the first time today and will definitely be back. The vet was caring and gentle doing the exam, and the tech was so sweet with our nervous cat. For some it might be a negative to communicate through their app but for us it's awesome, would so much rather schedule and communicate via app than by having to call on the phone. We did have to wait a while for the blood draw, and they are not cheap, but then no vet is cheap these days. Very good experience, definitely recommend. read more

I was excited to bring my dog in to this social media hyped new vet clinic today however it turned into a frustrating disappointing experience for me. The gal at the front desk was friendly and I appreciate she offered me coffee or water and weighed my dog with the help of their individually wrapped treat which my dog refused. We were little early for our appointment after weigh in in the lobby, we were put in a small room with cement floor that didn't look very clean. I felt uncomfortable waiting for a while in the tiny room and my dog was also anxious, i was tempted to open the door to let air in, I felt there's no airflow in there. I wished I didn't had to be ushered into the tiny room but instead I'd rather wait in the lobby. Finally, the vet came in and she's not that friendly with my dog, actually she's little uncomfortable/awkward. She had a nurse come in to help her. The whole physical exam seemed quite quick and not thorough. I asked questions and they both answered and that was it. I was concerned my dog may have fleas and she did use a flea comb quickly and saw flea poop. She talked about getting on flea meds. Anyway, she left the room and the nurse gave me prices for the shots and fecal test and flea meds and heartworm test that were recommended. Pretty standard. I said ok I'll think about it and i was told I can come get the flea medication anytime and drop off poop sample. She left the room and said I can take my time leaving. I left the room to go to the front desk and I decided I will get the flea med today. The man maybe a vet tech I don't know what his role is but he was very stressed out and said they are so busy and he cannot get me the medication and there's nothing he can do and the nurse I was just talking to who left my room few minutes ago is not around to help! What?! I'm just standing there with him who's literally frantic with the busyness and then he's said out loud he's got to deal with the person who's waiting outside the clinic with a dog. Ok I guess they are understaffed but why double book to this extend where I can't even get help with checking out and buying flea medication? I was expecting Stellar service from all the great reviews and my first experience was they are quite unprofessional and the man whoever he is was very impatient, unhelpful and unpleasant. The only good thing I got out of this visit was finding out my dog's weight and finding out my dog does indeed still have fleas because I don't have a flea comb and I don't see any on her but she's itching. What's the use when I can't get help in getting the treatment for it because everyone became so busy no one is available except the one person who either refused to go above and beyond to help me figure out a way to get the medication my dog desperately needed. I live closest to Berkeley and because I have the all access membership, I'll have to hopefully find a better clinic in SF or Walnut Creek and better vets. How inconvenient it has become! I was on my app in front of the man at the front desk trying to find the prescription so he can fill it but I found nothing and I tried to start a virtual chat and that didn't work so much for the convenience of the app! I still couldn't believe this bad experience that there's literally not enough people working there or there's a million customers all at the same time to get zero service at the end! Wow! read more

Modern Animal is amazing! So far I have only been to this location but have been blow away by the service each time I have visited. I was skeptical at first because of the membership fee, but after having a cat whose heart condition progressed and now needed more frequent visits, I quickly found that the membership fee was actually a steal. The app in itself and really great as well, I love being able to schedule appointments at the push of a button and to have all my pets history and invoices easily accessible. Customer service is also readily available and incredibly kind. Unfortunately my heart kitty succumbed to his condition shortly after us becoming members. They gave me credit and let me sign up my other cat in his place and even sent a condolence card. In terms of appointments, MA is a top tier service in itself. From check in to check out, the staff are incredibly attentive and kind. I love how they emphasize comfort not only for your pet but for you as an owner as well. The decor and furniture are pretty welcoming, I was flipping through some of the cool books they have in the lobby, and when we got guided to our check in room they even asked if I would like something to drink. I also really like how they do all the lab procedures in the same room so that your fur child always has you around as comfort. One can only imagine how frightening it is for our fur babies to be whisked away for an appointment then to be separated, restrained and poked. The doctors have been great, they really took their time with at each appointment and do a great job of thoroughly answering any questions I had. I also love how they don't push for any unnecessary and expensive work to be done and are happy to help find cheaper and alternative options. I highly reccomend this vet! read more

Great service friendly staff and amazingly clean we have 3 cats that are in great care at Midern Animal

So far, loving Modern Animal. Brought our cat in for a wellness check and to get his ear looked at as he had some buildup. The staff was so kind and they do everything to make sure your pet isn't stressed. They use food motivation to help fearful pets (even though my cat wasn't having it, LOL). They were so gentle with our boy and gave us the option of being there while they gave him his shots, cleaned his ears and trimmed his nails. The facility itself is very clean and relaxing as well. Only our first appointment, but we really liked them. read more
