Dr. Zarfoss performing ophthalmic exam on my lop bunny "Luna", who was referred to ophthalmology for chronic corneal ulcers

Dr. Gleeson is an excellent and compassionate exotic specialist. I brought my senior lop bunny, Violet, to her for a CT scan and a complex diagnostic workup, and I'm incredibly grateful for her knowledge, thoroughness and communication. She has taken the time to truly understand Violet's complicated medical case, always prioritizing her health and safety. I deeply appreciate the care, effort, and expertise she has devoted to helping my bun. Additionally, Dr. Zarfoss is a wonderful ophthalmologist who also assessed my senior bunny. I also brought my other lop bunny to her for an ophthalmic referral. She performed an ulcer debridement procedure on my bunny's eyes. The exotic and ophthalmology staff are great!

So I made an appointment to be seen around 1pm, arrived at 12:45. At around 1:40 they took my pet in the back and checked his vitals and returned him to me to continue waiting... around 3:45 I order lunch from door dash because I seen that I wasn't going anywhere. I got called in around 5:30... yeaaaa. They didn't see anything wrong with my pet but for $1400 they could sedate and xray him etc but they wanted me to sign a paper stating if I want him brought back if he dies... ok so I am tired and stress by then... that was the $180 consult, I asked for medication to make him comfortable til I could do next step, well he passed away quickly after. Never did he take the liquid food or antibiotics they gave him... I wish they would have told me during hour #1 that I wouldn't see an exotic vet that I was waiting all those hours for. They were nice so it wasn't all bad.

The object lodged in our dogs cornea

I came here with our little mix Lucy who had an eye issue on a Saturday. As soon as they saw her, they rushed her to the back and did a diagnostic, found an object lodged in her cornea, removed it, consulted with their ophthalmologist parter practice and came up with a treatment plan. All in the space of 30 min. Truly extraordinary service. Still waiting for them to complete a contrast test to determine if the cornea had been completely punctured. They will also book me an appointment with the ophthalmologist specialist early next week to get a specialist involved. This at a time when the emergency vet closer to me quoted 2 to 4 hour wait. They are excellent no doubt but in this case we really needed her to be seen immediately.

In contrast to the negative or disappointed pet owners who have posted , I had a pretty good experience early this morning. A bit of a wait because of change of shift but I'm medical and knew what that meant. My big senior German Shepherd dog wasn't freaking out in the waiting room as he usually does any where veterinarian so that was amazing enough. He has wigged out at UC Davis, at another local urgent care and very dramatically at his regular vet's parking lot and office in Moraga. This dog does not like vet settings. He had the painful heartworm treatment before so perhaps he has PTSD. BUT Good competent and friendly experience from the first phone call to meeting all the early morning staff, Leo the tech, and Dr Jennings. Now I know that kennel cough isn't a cough but a dramatic gagging and hacking with maybe a little vomiting maybe a little of this and that. Since my dog has a heart condition and I think a rougher life before being rescued under a freeway, I am a bit of a helicopter mom. But now we are reassured and resting and grateful for the good care, oh and did I mention the reasonable fee??? Thank you, everyone at Pets Referral.

"Old fogey", I was beginning to think. There's hope! I just had my first appointment with my two dogs -- a full on 80 lb. Rhodesian Ridgeback and a mutt half her size. I didn't have to wait weeks for an appointment, either. Just walking in the waiting room felt different. The staff so polite. The system well set up. Nobody waiting long periods just to pay the bill! Clients helping me with the door, my hands busy with leash and cane. The examination room was spotless. Various staff of different specialities were universally patient, precise, willing to listen, had good questions and gentle with both dogs. Approached each slowly enough to become a friend, establishing trust. Good eye contact. Not a single fault among any, including the Vet herself. I see that there are complaints regarding tests and charges. My former vet used the same amounts so I suspect the big jump is universal and has to do with updated science. Likely the outside lab that does the tests is in control of those prices but for markup. My former service providers were definitely odd about my refusing the second round of repeated tests for a condition that is incurable "just to see" rather than renew a prescription from their own service given a little over a month ago that worked perfectly. They then handled my cancer ridden dog roughly twice -- the second time staring directly at me. Of course, this brought on more lesions within hours with this histamine-oriented cancer. But I digress. This new vet does not deserve the distrust I see in the comments. You know, we always learn more about the critic than about the topic. Resistance to antibiotics is a multi species danger that has increased tremendously in the past several decades. Confirmation is a major way to guard all mammals and other species from antibiotics becoming entirely ineffective for all of us. Over the counter antibiotics contribute too. If there isn't a regulation already for testing, there should be. In the mean time, my new vet has prescribed what is likely ok -- but must be sure -- antibiotic until the test results come through. Since urinary tract infections are dangerous for the elderly (again, humans and other mammals alike are at increased risk) this is the professional, medically sound approach. Lastly, I'll remark on the follow up email and phone call. So impressive. Making sure (since the email asked for a response) that I had received it (such a polite way to put it), a phone message was recorded during a meeting I was attending. I read the original email and returned the call. Everything is settled, a prescription is filled and awaiting pickup. That's real care for the dog involved and an efficient, reasonable system. So maybe I'm not an old fogey in this area after all. Thought myself spoiled as the childhood vet was head of Ohio State University Vet school in Columbus. There are still vets who are patient, professional, honest and who have good bedside manner... Yay!

They're very transparent about pricing and never pressured me into getting any specific tests. They answered all my questions clearly and made sure I understood everything. The clinic gives out free treats for both cats and dogs, which was a nice touch. Their prices do lean a little on the higher side compared to some other clinics I looked at nearby but they provided close estimates over the phone beforehand. They offer basic blood/urine work and have an in-house pharmacy for some medications. They also do basic bladder ultrasounds, but for more advanced imaging, they refer out to other nearby clinics they trust. Overall, I highly recommend this clinic. I was a little hesitant because the location is in west Oakland. We had always been to VCA in SL but I knew it would cost us an arm and leg. So I decided to call first to see what I needed to do to get my doggo seen. I spoke to Isela and she was very friendly and informative. She told me how to handle my pet and how to get there. Maps has you drive up to the building but you should actually park in their lot. Their lot is off Adeline, before the under pass. Go up to the gate and press the call button for them to let you in. I let Isela know my dog is reactive so waiting in the lobby was not ideal. Luckily there were rooms available for my husband and I to chill in before he got seen. The staff is super friendly and told us the wait would be long. Although there weren't many people that night, they had some animals with bigger emergencies and surgeries were happening. Totally understandable, this is an ER. We were taken to a room to wait and a vet assistant was right behind us ready to take vitals and notes on what happened. My doggo was in good spirits but I could tell he was a little anxious. We were told that there would be a 4-6 hour wait for a vet to see him and sure enough by the 4th hour our pup was taken to the back to get seen. After they took him back, finance came and let us know what the plan was and the cost. Look, if you can't plan for these emergencies for your pet, please don't be surprised with the cost. I will say VCA would've probably been more expensive but that didn't matter. What mattered to me was my dog and his care. Financial did say we had to pay the full amount and then we'd be refunded if some things weren't needed. She also told us that the doc will be in soon to explain what was next. Dr Black was the attending vet this night and she is the sweetest. She had no judgement and told me why some things were maybe needed and why they charged as precaution. It's all good, just a long as my boy gets better. She did explain what procedure she was going to do, as well as recovery and possible recovery symptoms. We were then told we could go home and they'd call us once the procedure was done. It had been about 5.5 hours since we were there and we were tired. After another 4 hours, almost reaching midnight, we were told my pup was ready. My husband and I drove back and even took my son who was so anxious about his "brother." We've had my dog since he was 4 months old, so yes he's my son's brother. Staff was talking to my son about all things marvel and that really helped put him at ease. We were then given instructions and medication and sent home. Service was amazing and I highly recommend OakVet for your emergency needs. I will be donating to them soon!

I wish I could just write about that. The only reason this has more than 1 star is because of the phenomenal work by everyone EXCEPT Josh. Sorry this is long but bare with me HOWEVER, after having to take our boy in a couple days over the course of a week, after we'd gotten his new medications figured out, Josh van Geem called us into a side office. We had not met him before, he had not met our cat before, he was not on the premises at any point when we'd been in before. He pretty much just walked in, saw my boy, and called us in to talk to us. He told us that there was "no point" running tests or "wasting money" on finding out what was causing our cats seizures. He said that while the cat was doing a lot better now, we "should just go ahead and put him down now JUST IN CASE he gets sick or has another health scare in the future". I almost vomited right there and exploded crying, because what kind of person tells you to kill a loved one "just to get it out of the way", especially for the explanation that "they might get sick in the future"?!?!! He rolled his eyes at me crying and left the room. I actually saw him out at a bar a couple days later (don't worry, my husband was at home watching the cat) and Dr Josh stood a few feet away from GLARING at me silently for a creepy amount of time. He seems to have some personal issue with me that he wanted to take out on my cat OR a personal issue with me BECAUSE I wouldn't put down my cat just because he said to. I debated on writing this for the last year+ because I was terrified that if I did, and God forbid we had to rush my baby back in for an ER visit, Josh might be there and take it out on my cat out of spite. I decided to write it because my friend was looking for an ER vet and I told them about OakVet, but warned them about Josh and they suggested I warn others and they were right. And while I can't prove it, my friends who work in pet grooming have heard his name make the rounds before for horror stories. Not outright harming but more cruelty towards owners and complete disregard for pets. If it were NOT for his frankly terrifying behavior, I'd give this place 1000 stars but I am genuinely so scared of this man being around my cat. And I am still very scared that my pets may need after hours or ER vet care at some point and he will be the on duty vet and will harm them to get back at me. I hope to GOD others notice and don't let him but that is a terrifying reality that I have to live with by writing this and that fear is what keeps people from raising concerns. WHICH BY THE WAY MY CAT IS DOING GREAT ALMOST 2 YEARS LATER-- thanks to the REST of the staff at OakVet and I'm sure to the absolute misery of "Dr" Josh.
