Kind staff, but a frustrating and disorganized urgent care experience. Our visit took about 1.5 hours. Even though we completed intake over the phone, we were asked to fill out the same information again on paper, and we weren't seen until ~15 minutes after our scheduled time. We also spent a long time waiting due to a lepto test. We were initially told results could take up to 30 minutes and that the assistant would check with Dr. Holliday to see if we could leave and come back. About 20 minutes later, we were told we only needed to wait 10-15 minutes total--by then, we had already waited most of that time unnecessarily. Follow-up was the most frustrating part. The front desk was responsive through the online portal, but not helpful--they repeatedly said they would "leave a note for the doctor" or were "waiting for the doctor to finalize their notes." We later found out test results were available on Tuesday but weren't released to us until Thursday. For an urgent care visit, this delay felt unacceptable. We requested SOAP notes and lab results on Monday for insurance purposes and had to follow up multiple times to get documentation that should have been readily available. The medical care itself seemed thorough, but the administrative side was lacking. Given the cost (urgent care exam alone was $147), I expected a more efficient and timely process. Overall: kind staff, but poor follow-through and delayed communication. For urgent care, I expected a much greater sense of urgency. read more

Due to several errors by my past, long time vet services, I decided to move on. It seemed kinda hopeless as so many now are a different style than what I enjoyed throughout a long life. "Old fogey", I was beginning to think. There's hope! I just had my first appointment with my two dogs -- a full on 80 lb. Rhodesian Ridgeback and a mutt half her size. I didn't have to wait weeks for an appointment, either. Just walking in the waiting room felt different. The staff so polite. The system well set up. Nobody waiting long periods just to pay the bill! Clients helping me with the door, my hands busy with leash and cane. The examination room was spotless. Various staff of different specialities were universally patient, precise, willing to listen, had good questions and gentle with both dogs. Approached each slowly enough to become a friend, establishing trust. Good eye contact. Not a single fault among any, including the Vet herself. I see that there are complaints regarding tests and charges. My former vet used the same amounts so I suspect the big jump is universal and has to do with updated science. Likely the outside lab that does the tests is in control of those prices but for markup. My former service providers were definitely odd about my refusing the second round of repeated tests for a condition that is incurable "just to see" rather than renew a prescription from their own service given a little over a month ago that worked perfectly. They then handled my cancer ridden dog roughly twice -- the second time staring directly at me. Of course, this brought on more lesions within hours with this histamine-oriented cancer. But I digress. This new vet does not deserve the distrust I see in the comments. You know, we always learn more about the critic than about the topic. Resistance to antibiotics is a multi species danger that has increased tremendously in the past several decades. Confirmation is a major way to guard all mammals and other species from antibiotics becoming entirely ineffective for all of us. Over the counter antibiotics contribute too. If there isn't a regulation already for testing, there should be. In the mean time, my new vet has prescribed what is likely ok -- but must be sure -- antibiotic until the test results come through. Since urinary tract infections are dangerous for the elderly (again, humans and other mammals alike are at increased risk) this is the professional, medically sound approach. Lastly, I'll remark on the follow up email and phone call. So impressive. Making sure (since the email asked for a response) that I had received it (such a polite way to put it), a phone message was recorded during a meeting I was attending. I read the original email and returned the call. Everything is settled, a prescription is filled and awaiting pickup. That's real care for the dog involved and an efficient, reasonable system. So maybe I'm not an old fogey in this area after all. Thought myself spoiled as the childhood vet was head of Ohio State University Vet school in Columbus. There are still vets who are patient, professional, honest and who have good bedside manner... Yay! read more

Incompetent. Unable to diagnose cracked skin on my cat's paw - the reason for his limping, which is why I took him in. Instead they asked for over $2,000 for x-rays and full bloodwork. I learned from an experienced vet that the bloodwork wasn't necessary - and obviously the x-rays weren't either. This visit cost over $300 and basically, for nothing. Also, the team was disorganized - I got multiple calls and texts from different people there in a matter of a few hours. Please don't go to this expensive place - they lack competence. read more

I think your experience here probably depends a lot on your vet. I got assigned to Erin Shen, who's a recent veterinary graduate and whose playbook consists of asking for expensive tests and frequent follow-ups without solving any problems. I spent around $1000 in tests and visits in three months and Dr. Shen did not solve any of my senior dog's problems, and essentially wanted to keep a large 13 year old dog's pain medication prescription hostage dependent on me subjecting him to monthly blood tests. She did not suggest any solutions for his frequent itching. I would not recommend subjecting your dog to her care. When I messaged the clinic to ask if I could have follow-ups with a different vet, they never responded. read more

My girlfriend and I have been taking our pets to the Berkeley Animal Hospital for about a year now, and every staff member we've worked with has been incredibly kind, patient, and caring. We bring both our dog and cat here. Our dog sees Dr. Moulton as her primary care vet, and we really appreciate how thorough and attentive she's been in managing our dog's health. Our cat recently started seeing Dr. Holliday, and our experience with her so far has also been excellent. Most recently, our dog had a dental checkup and procedure with Dr. Ruta, who was extremely communicative and clear throughout the entire process, which gave us a lot of peace of mind. I honestly can't recommend this place enough. As a relatively new pet parent (my girlfriend had all of our animals before we moved in together), Berkeley Animal Hospital has set the standard for the level of care I now expect for my pets. Even after moving back to San Francisco, we still make the trip out here because the care is that good. I've had dogs in the Bay Area for over 20 years, and my experience with this veterinary practice was so concerning that I left within 30 days. There were multiple serious issues. It took four days to receive a response about whether my dog's diarrhea could be related to prescribed medication. After my dog experienced a brain seizure and required emergency care, it then took five days to get a basic question answered about medication dosage. During that time, I received no response at all and was ultimately told the clinic could not answer a simple medication question unless I paid $65 for a "phone consult." I paid the fee out of necessity. The veterinarian was 25 minutes late to the call, the consultation lasted only six minutes, and I had to call the clinic myself to see if she was even joining. Shortly afterward, my dog had another emergency and ended up in the ER with a second brain seizure. The clinic showed no concern and never followed up to check on his condition, despite him being an established patient. The only outreach I received during this period was a voicemail asking if I wanted to purchase more flea and tick medication. I have since left this practice. In summary, they are unresponsive, poorly managed, and more focused on selling medication than on providing timely, compassionate care. My experience was extremely disappointing and, frankly, alarming. read more

I took my 3-month-old puppy to Dr. Holliday for a wellness check, and that part went well. She was kind and patient. Unfortunately, everything else about this clinic was a complete disaster.Dr. Holliday told me they had a technician who could help with my Doberman's ear posting and that I could schedule an appointment. I then spent an entire week calling and speaking to multiple staff members, and no one ever followed up. After I finally emailed to complain, they blamed it on a "miscommunication." It wasn't. My requests were simply ignored.Once I finally got an appointment scheduled, I drove an hour to the clinic, only to be told upon arrival that the technician wasn't there. I had specifically booked with her, since she was the only one who could do the procedure. No one bothered to call and cancel.When I questioned this, the front desk response was: "I have no control when employees don't come to work." Completely dismissive and unprofessional. You may not control attendance, but you absolutely control whether you notify your clients. Both my husband and I had to cancel meetings in the middle of our workday for this appointment. Communication at this clinic is nonexistent, and there is zero respect for clients' time.To make matters worse, I requested a prescription for Simparica Trio during the initial visit and was told it would be sent to me. After waiting nearly two weeks with no follow-up, I only received it because I showed up in person.If you have unlimited time and patience, this place might work for you. We are very happy that Berkeley Animal Hospital was recommended by a friend, especially after having a less than positive experience with our previous veterinary service. From the first contact, where Penny was able to get us an appointment within 15 minutes, to veterinary assistant Lilith's kindness and caring to Dr. Holliday's concern, expertise, and reassuring kindness, we and our very sick cat were well treated. Lilith and Dr. Holliday listened to us, explained what needed to be done and kept us apprised every step of the way. After hydration, x-rays, it turns out our little cat had swallowed three (!) fuzzy balls, which had to be retrieved with an endoscope. Everything was very professional, it was clear that Dr. Holliday and the technicians knew what they were doing. We were kept informed at each step and everything was clearly explained. They also sent us home with clear instructions and a request that we call the next day with an update. It seems clear from the positive atmosphere and friendly staff at Berkeley Animal Hospital that it is a happy place where the employees love their work. I have been sitting on this for several months now but as I am searching for a new vet and seeing this pop back up in the Yelp recommendations, I feel like I need to update my previous review. When I first started working with BAH I was really pleased. Then, seemingly overnight, everything changed. I had been with them for about a year when suddenly I'm required to sign a "be nice" agreement (if I recall correctly, basically "don't yell at the vet staff") before booking a new appointment. I understand this kind of measure in a high stress environment and thought that maybe there had been an outsized incident with the practice that prompted this precaution. But I think there must have been a whole entire change in ethos that caused this, overall. Previously I felt attended to, with the vet knowing my dog's file very well, and giving reasonable recommendations and keeping me well informed as another highly educated individual. But this time I felt kind of condescended to and rushed. First I asked about his nails and arthritis (he has been nippy and difficult with nail trims in the past and a groomer had suggested sedation). In discussing a sedated nail trim, they then they said my dog would need dental cleaning and that there was a discount coming up and I could bundle the nails and teeth together. What I was told verbally was that his teeth weren't too bad but the maintenance would be necessary and help in the long run. We did blood work to check on his liver, since he has a history. All normal. Then I came in for a follow-up not realizing that it had been booked as the dental surgery day. I was told there would be multiple extractions and that his teeth had been given the worst/most serious rating on the scale. I was quoted a very, very high number for the *low end* cost. The nail trim was "free" :))))))) When I balked at this and said I was absolutely not about to do that, and that there had been serious miscommunications about how bad my dog's teeth were and what procedures were going to be done, the person behind the desk was very sympathetic and surprised as well. They asked if I had been given any information on dental products for dogs - recommended treats, water additives, toothpaste, etc. NO. NO I HAD NOT. I had not been given any advice or insight into my dog's teeth before being kind of deceptively signed up for massive dental surgery. The person behind the counter was very very compassionate and printed out the list of products for me. When I said I was definitely going to be going elsewhere to get a second opinion, the person was also kind enough to tell me the kinds of terms I should look up and ask about. Throughout this experience I felt pressured and rushed and I have lost a lot of trust. I feel like I would give my dog over for surgery being told "oh, maybe one or two extractions" and then end up with a call mid-surgery pressuring me for more and more extractions, for more and more money, until I have a toothless dog and 10k in vet bills. I know vet practices in the Bay have prices that are artificially jacked up compared to :) everywhere else in this country :) but I also felt that my previous experiences with this vet practice was very different, much more considerate and thorough and patient. It felt worth the price. And now I feel that the attitude has definitively changed, and I don't want to go back. A shame. read more

Berkeley animal hospital seems like a great vet and honestly I was under this guise for awhile too, but truly this is only because the front desk staff are incredibly kind. The twisted part is that it appears they kind of rely on the kindness of the front desk staff to appear as if they are kind overall. Now the more dark-sided part, they constantly use fear to up-charge and oversell you on treatments and procedures that the dog doesn't need and likely never really needed. Once my dog was put under anesthesia for a procedure and then after the anesthesia and the dental I agreed to they said the initial procedure he was in there for actually looked fine and that he didn't much treatment for that. Just odd, as it seems they could've inspected him prior to having me pay for anesthesia and risk his health by being under the anesthesia to begin with. Then, while doing the dental work they told me he needed like ten teeth pulled!!! They made this whole dramatic consultation after I said no during the initial phone call basically telling me how badly he needed this procedure and how they were going to get a second opinion from another vet at a different facility for this and guess what? After I still said no, crickets, no second opinion in site. Well, seems he never needed the teeth pulled then. Next, and truly the last straw was when I went in for a standard and quick type procedure and am immediately met by the vet twisting my words and acting like he needs additional testing. I keep saying to her that I don't think he has issues with the topic she keeps bringing up. She brings the dog to the back and says there are no visual signs of the issue I went in for and that now it must be what she was suggesting it was all a long, so I agree to pay for another test. Only to find they hadn't even done the initial treatment I went in for yet!!!! I find that this vet purposely provides information before proper visual and thorough inspections in order to put their wild beliefs into you so that you feel pressured to pay pay pay and be upsold. Creepiest part is (believe me or don't) I saw the vet walk out of the room with a patient with the creepiest smile on her face as she was closing the door, which told me all the car salesmen energy I needed to know. UNLESS YOU ARE RICH AND WANT YOUR DOG TO HAVE UNNECESSARY PROCEDURES STAY AWAY. They will literally (like another review said) leave you with a toothless dog that was operated on so many times for no reason while you are over there thinking the dog was sick as can be, whole time they probably just had a pretty quick fix. CREEPY AND PREDATORY. If you have to go here, stay true to your beliefs, be stubborn, and get second and probably even third opinions. Very friendly and thorough but I was a bit peeved they wouldn't quote the dental procedure my cat needed right then and there. The vet said multiple times "well send an estimate over by email with a minimum and maximum expected price" because my cat has gingivitis, but after asking multiple times she wouldn't tell me an actual number. There's no way she's completely in the dark what to expect that price would be, but a minimum like come on? Is it gonna be in the hundreds? Thousands? Who knows! I'll update this review when I get that number. I don't like them gatekeeping financial information from me for no reason. Maybe so I won't get mad or refuse in person? Idk. I understand the reasoning of "I'm not sure how bad your cats teeth will be" but she definitely knew how much it'd cost in a best health scenario and wouldn't tell me. They gave her lots of love though and a prescription for parasite medication, answered questions. Fairly timely (I waited about 10/15 minutes ish in the exam room before being seen) and the front desk seemed a little overwhelmed. Nice people though. Oh update! It was 100% vet tech Felina who made me pump the brakes mid-treatment and leave this place on our 3rd follow up appointment. This place was questionable from the beginning when I took my dog to be treated last year because the standard stuff was way higher than the previous vets I've been to. Being that I have a senior dog, and strive for preventative care as much as possible, I have receipts for everything. I was shocked at the prices here vs other vets in Berkeley and Walnut Creek. I had been shopping around for a high level vet since moving from NYC and it's been really hard to find the same level of care, concern and follow through for my senior dog as we had at home. But when the vet tech first told me how much she despises expressing dogs anal glands, and how truly disgusting it is - and then takes her away from me to do that very thing, it was a red flag. The second red flag came when she brought her back and my follow up bill for an ear infection went from $69 or thereabouts to $300 and change. When I asked what caused this sudden jump in cost, Felina said "oh that's right, you have an issue with money." Bear in mind I had already paid more than $1k here without question because I WANT to take good care of my dog. Her comment was completely inappropriate. Who doesn't have an issue with their bill inexplicably multiplying by hundreds of dollars?! I denied treatment, paid only the follow up charge, and left. Luckily, I got in same day to Grand Lake Vet , I had been waiting to get into for a long time! We've been with them one year now and they've been amazing. See my review. Thank you to Dr. Rachel Moulton and the wonderful staff at Berkeley Animal Hospital for your timely, kind, and expert / quality care for Alfie cat. Our little (now not so little) guy has been a happy healthy boy ever since we adopted him as a kitten six years ago. While he seldom coughs up hairballs, a few months prior to the incident that brought him to Berkeley Animal Hospital, he started coughing up a few hairballs per month. At the time we were not too concerned about the increased grooming / transient bald spot as his appetite / stools and demeanor remained largely unchanged. A couple of weeks leading up to the incident, his hairballs increased in frequency to once every few days. Then he missed his breakfast one morning (first time in his life as he loves to eat) and coughed up multiple hairballs that day. We observed him throughout the day and when he became behaviorally withdrawn / lethargic and his appetite remained markedly decreased, we took him to Berkeley Animal Hospital as a first time patient. We were able to book an urgent care appointment with Dr. Moulton right away and from start to end, Dr. Moulton and the team were amazing. Dr. Moulton first asked about the pertinent medical history leading to Alfie's current presentation, allowing me to share details while asking key questions. She then examined Alfie with care while discussing potential diagnostic considerations (including what it was most likely to be -- a trichobezoar / hairball), why imaging is recommended, and potential next steps. I stepped out for Alfie's imaging and shortly after, Dr. Moulton called me to let me know that unfortunately the imaging revealed fluid buildup / dilation of his gastrointestinal tract proximal to site of obstruction in his small intestines with bowel wall thickening potentially concerning for a chronic underlying inflammatory process predisposing Alfie to the obstruction. From there on out, Alfie's care continued to be streamlined and expedited as Dr. Moulton personally called the veterinarians at OakVet (where Alfie also received superb care) to transfer Alfie's care to a nearby ED for a potential surgical admission pending further imaging / consultation. In short, after his procedure and smooth recovery, Alfie is now thriving and loving life again! We are grateful to have received wonderful care at Berkeley Animal Hospital. The space is clean, warm and comforting -- perfect vibes for a healthcare setting. Most importantly, my experience with Dr. Moulton was outstanding and I was able to trust her clinical expertise entirely. read more

I am so grateful that I found Berkeley Animal Hospital after I moved to Berkeley! It is such a relief to feel like I have a vet I can trust to take the best care of my dogs. The staff is so kind and welcoming. They always do whatever is needed to make either of my dogs feel safe and welcome. One of my dogs is very nervous at vets and everyone at Berkeley Animal Hospital is so patient with her and kind to her. The nurses are so knowledgeable and understanding. I really feel like they care about my dogs and truly listen to my concerns. Dr. Holliday is incredible! She explains everything and clearly thinks through all of her recommendations. I actually feel like I understand what to do going forward for my dog's care. She takes my dogs' individual personalities, ages, and dispositions into account, looking at them for the individual they are to make the best choice. It can be difficult to have a pet with a health issue, and there's nowhere else I'd want my pets to be in order to get everything taken care of. My dog, Dobby, had a dental procedure that ended up showing more damage than we thought. Dr. Holliday and nurse Erin both called me and made sure I was kept aware of everything they were finding and what that meant going forward. Bourely animal Hospital had appointments on a Sunday and a holiday week - my usual Vet didn't even answer-all week -just said leave a message. I got in the same day as I called Berkeley animal Hospital within a couple hours of calling. My dog is terrified of the vet. They were sensitive to that let me have her wait in the car-after initial tests and when we had to go back for one more test, they were so good with her. She didn't resist going back in-which is unusual for her. She is a rescue and is extremely apprehensive to strangers - she had a good attitude about going back in the door, which I was surprised. Also, their lab is in House and done within the hour. Also, had to take x-rays and they were taken and I had the results within two hours. Of course, all vets are expensive -three x-rays taken and interpreted cost more than $600 but they were to rule out a mass -so I guess it was necessary . read more

We booked here due to the reviews, but I found the vet - Dr. Moulton - to be a bit rushed and annoyed by my asking questions, condescending, and very quick to push additional services, including some items totally unnecessary at the time (why would I take home sedatives for pre-surgery if I haven't agreed to the procedure?). An update six months after my first review: Dr. Holliday and her staff at Berkeley Animal Hospital saved our cat's life. A couple of months after our initial visit to Berkeley Animal, our cat fell ill the same way again, but this time could not recover on her own like she had before. We did a ton of tests and nothing was conclusive. The best guess was toxoplasmosis but our cat wasn't really responding to standard treatment. We had all but lost hope, and we were preparing ourselves to let our cat go, not only four years old yet. All throughout, Dr. Holliday was incredibly dedicated to trying to figure it out, consulting with many colleagues in the field. As a last-ditch effort, she suggested doubling the normal amount of antibiotics our cat was on, and that proved to be the solution. After nearly two months of wasting away, our cat suddenly showed signs of life, and over the following couple of months, steadily returned to full health. Our cat is back to herself, playing and active like she was never sick. It's not miraculous; it's the dedication of a truly caring vet and her wonderful team. read more
