I'd like to update my review on Modern Animal. When I posted the initial review, I had someone from MA contact me that same day and ask to speak on the phone. I will say that I do feel that my concerns and frustrations were heard and that they took appropriate actions to make it right. I have continued to go to MA and since have not had issues of my appointments being cancelled. I would also like to say, even with my original review, the staff at MA are ALWAYS very kind and attentive, and I feel that they have my dogs best interest at heart, from day one. I appreciate MA for contacting me and trying to make things right, and it makes me feel more confident in continuing using them in the future. read more

I was honestly very stressed and worried when his dew claw injury suddenly became worse, especially after already bringing him in the week before. What I appreciated most was not only the care for Ben, but also the kindness and understanding toward my financial situation. The doctor took the time to explain every recommendation clearly, never pressured me, and helped work with me to find a treatment option that was still safe for Ben while being more affordable. As a pet owner, that level of compassion means a lot. Veterinary emergencies can be overwhelming, and being treated with patience and understanding made the entire experience so much less stressful. I wanted to like this place so much. My experience in the office was okay except for the room I was smelled horrible . But the reception side of this company is miserable. If you have a basicquestion, you can't call easily but you can chat, they sometimes take 20 minutes to respond, other times hours. And if you don't keep the window open, the chat disappears, and can't even be found in the "closed chats" tab. I've tried calling multiple times. Each time I've waited over 10 minutes on hold, then they hang up on me. I called back and waited another 15 minutes. Finally gave up and pressed 1 for a callback. They called back, but no one was on the line. All I need is my cats rabies certificate and my cat's records, which should absolutely be in the app at a modern veterinary clinic. I can't find them. There are no SOAP notes, no vaccine records. Just a visit log. I shouldn't have to spend over two hours of my time just to get my pet's records. The fact that I can't even call the office directly is infuriating. The convenience of Modern Animal is that they have tons of appointment slots available. But having appointment availability means nothing if you have to spend two hours trying to reach a human afterward. Every other vet I have been to I can call and get any records within the hour and I spend less than two minutes of my time doing so. read more

We recently switched from our former Berkeley Vet, and have been very impressed with the service and professional care at Modern Animal on Hearst Avenue. When we booked our 1st appointment, we received a timely call back about an earlier opening, and it was reassuring that the nurse asked relevant questions to evaluate how urgent our cat's issue might be. All staff were caring and helpful on our arrival. Our Vet was Dr Dunckel; she was thorough in her examination, and presented options to narrow down the possible diagnosis and treatment for our cat. Follow up was very easy to access with inquiries from staff on the Modern Animal app. Our kitty is doing much better, and we are so glad to have Modern Animal as a future resource for cat care! read more

I feel like this location has changed a lot, and I was very disappointed with my most recent visit. The whole experience felt like a cash grab. My original estimate (around $400 for vaccines and an ear sample) suddenly jumped to almost $1,000 with added tests we hadn't even discussed, which I then had to ask them to remove. The customer service wasn't great either. It was clear the staff felt uncomfortable when I asked questions to make informed decisions about my pets' care. I still really appreciate the Walnut Creek location and will continue going there because the team makes me feel informed, respected, and welcomed. Unfortunately, the Berkeley location no longer feels the same, which is unfortunate since it's significantly closer to my house. read more

I also want to mention one more thing. The app has a chat feature so you can text with an advice nurse if you aren't sure whether to bring your pet in. I used this feature at night after arriving from a vacation and it was so helpful to get reassurance and know that the situation could wait until the next day. My primary reason for booking an exam here was for wellness and to get a Simparica trio prescription for my dog. We visited in June 9th 2026 and it is now June 20th and we still have not been able to get the prescription filled after a visit that cost well over $1000 for a checkup, vaccines and labwork. We got HWT results the day after the visit and I made the doctor and staff aware that Momo had an active flea infestation at the time of the visit. They approved a prescription for regular Simparica after we discussed getting the Trio at my visit. I was told we need heartworm test results. I get that. We got them. So why has it been impossible for me to get ahold of someone who works at this actual location for a simparica trio prescription to be sent to Costco when I was told multiple time it would happen. I have sent multiple messages to their corporate, to this location, and to the doctor who saw him. Why haven't you given me a prescription when my dog had an active flea infestation when we were there two weeks ago? So frustrated when we agreed to do everything they suggested without batting an eye. We got an estimate for more expensive diagnostics but my dog still has fleas because no preventative. read more

This was our first time taking our cat to the vet and it was a calming and pleasant experience. The office was super clean and the receptionist was attentive to us. The doctor and the vet technicians were all polite and patient with our many questions. Our cat loved them as she was calm and sniffing them the whole time. For the last few years of his life, we took our dog Timmy to Modern Animal and consistently had great experiences. Timmy hated the vet and would start shaking as soon as he realized where we were going, but the entire team was always incredibly kind, patient and accommodating. Their app is also super helpful, especially the ability to message a nurse about semi-urgent questions instead of having to book a full office visit. If you're looking for the absolute lowest-cost option, Modern Animal may not be the best fit - but for what we paid, we felt we received excellent value and care. We'd especially like to thank Dr. Royalty for the compassionate counseling when we came in to talk through whether it was time to say goodbye to Timmy. We were anxious and carrying so much guilt, and she helped us feel confident that we were making the most loving decision before his quality of life declined further. My experience at Modern Animal was less than stellar. There were a few good things and some bad. I have a rescue dog who is somewhere between 13 and 15 years old. I was taking her and my other senior dog, who has recently passed, to a vet I liked very much, but unfortunately I could never get either of them in for urgent or emergency visits in a timely manner. Because of this, I discovered Urgent Pet in El Cerrito. They are wonderful, so I have been going there when any problems arose. But they don't give vaccines. My old girl needed her yearly Leptosporosis vaccine. I was searching for a vaccine clinic and found an offer from Modern Animal for a free exam fee, or almost free, it was $70 off the $80 fee. I thought this would be a great opportunity to try another vet clinic and get her vaccine. I also wanted to discuss the fact that Molly was having Sundowner's Syndrome, pacing and barking and being anxious at night. This is common in older dogs. I made the appointment online. I had to put in my credit card to hold the appointment. They sent me plenty of texts reminding me of the appointment. We ended up being 15 minutes early for a 1 pm appointment. I was worried about parking in Berkeley but we were able to find a spot in the parking lot behind the clinic. No one was in the clinic when we arrived. The person at the desk told me it was lunch break, they closed for an hour. So we were the first appt. after lunch. We were waiting in the exam room and the vet finally came in about 12 minutes after 1. I wouldn't even mention this normally, but I've read several reviews here where people were turned away and had their appts. canceled because they were ten minutes late. If clients are going to be held to such strict standards, it seems the vet should also adhere to those rules. Especially since we were the first appt. after lunch. The vet was nice enough, but her exam was cursory. All she did was listen to her heart and lungs. I explained her night time anxiety, and she recommended Gabopentin. I told the vet Molly had had elevated liver enzymes on a prior blood test so she recommended a senior blood panel. I said I thought about that but questioned what good it would do since there was not much to be done even if they were high. She said she might have a thyroid problem. So I agreed. I told the vet Molly has pet insurance so they would cover the cost of the blood test anyway. I asked if her nails could be trimmed. The vet said that was not something they normally do there. I've never heard of a vet clinic that can't do a nail trim. The tech said she could do it though. The tech was excellent. Very friendly and helpful. She brought Molly back to me and she did get her nails trimmed. The next day, I was expecting to get the results of the blood work emailed to me. Nothing showed up so I looked for their phone number online. That's when I discovered there is no phone number for the Berkeley office, or I assume any of their other offices. Everything has to be done by the app. I called the only number I could find, and was told you can not speak to anyone at the office because they are all helping pets that are in the office. You have to download the app and the results will be there. So I downloaded the app and it says the results will be available in 3-5 days. I wondered if they were sending the blood out of the country because I've always had blood work results by the next day at any clinic I have taken a pet too. And I've had pets for over 50 years. 5 days later the results were in the app, interpreted by another vet, not the one we had seen. This vet recommended I bring in a urine sample to help interpret the reason her liver enzyme was high. Why would I continue to do follow up tests when you have no access to discuss anything with the vet by phone or email? What if your pet is really sick? It's all too remote for me. My insurance company decided to deny the claim due to the fact that the only diagnosis on the care summary was anxiety. The insurance doesn't cover behavioral issues. They had never denied a claim before for any blood panels. So now I had to call the only number there is, explain what happened, ask them to ask the vet to add the fact we discussed her prior elevated liver enzyme and the question about whether she had a thyroid problem as reasons for the blood test. They asked me to send them the denial from the insurance company. Then I got an email saying they would work on this, it would take 7-10 days. At some point I got an email saying the vet we saw was an on call vet, and wouldn't be back in the office for weeks. They did send a document after 7 days, outlining the need for the test, from Modern Animal Team. This place was anything but modern to me. It's like they are trying to reinvent the wheel. No ability to speak to a live person at the office, once you leave the building, is reason enough to never return. The only reason they get 2 stars is because of the tech. read more

Our kitty Ella has not been well, and the doctor gave us peace of mind letting us know this is a very common issue and gave us advice on changing her food, as well as requested all the necessary testing. Made an appointment to bring my cat here for a visit for her vomiting, arrived 9 minutes late, because its street parking and had to park a block and a half away, pay the meter and walk to the clinic. When we arrived the receptionist told us she would have to check if the dr "was still comfortable seeing us" and the dr said no. Mind you, they were not busy, there was not a single person in the lobby. I wish we weren't a few minutes late of course, my bad on that. However, I would think they would care for the animal enough to look past me being 9 minutes late and give her the care she needs. Now my cat has to wait for another appointment when she could have gotten the help she needs today. Not to mention the stress to my cat to bring her out of the house and on a car ride for what ended up being no reason. Petty and rude. We won't be going back to any modern animal clinics. read more

I wish I could give 1 star and 5 stars, because Modern Animal was both horrible and great. 1) Communication. Its communication system seeks to be fast, but that speed is at the cost of giving meaningful (or even correct) information. Theoretically they have the records in front of them, but you would never know it. The speedy chat discouraged us from using steroids "because of the risk of diabetes"...except MA had already diagnosed our cat with two weeks to live. One MA staffer told us our cat had mild kidney disease. Another told us it was advanced kidney disease. The overall experience was chaotic, uncoordinated and frustrating. We advise ignoring the chat communication system. Only listen to the one vet you grow to trust. MA also has vets that cannot be trusted. 2) The Awful The first MA vet who saw our cat was proven to be bad at his job. He somehow missing a massive tumor... that was found by the next Modern Animal vet. 3) The Great Thankfully the Berkeley office was closed one day and we went to the Walnut Creek office where we met Dr Coyle. She is compassionate, responsive, flexible and EXCELLENT. She is the one who found the cancer and correctly predicted two weeks to live. Dr Coyle was a bright spot in an overall frustrating veterinary experience. Thank you Dr Coyle. 4) Pricing MA offers a razor blade pricing model: get you in the door with an annual payment plan (which sounds great) and then overcharge you for testing. Ex: Modern Animal wanted to charge $312, for a SPEC fPL test which seemed high. I called Campus Vet and was quoted $238, but of course they charge for the visit too. (To see the vet is $112, but if it is just for the test(s), only $38.) So if you go the vet and get ONE test, MA may be slightly less. But if you get multiple tests, MA will be more expensive. MA suggests lots of tests. 5) Downstream Costs Since our cat was diagnosed with kidney disease we spent $200 buying Modern Animal prescribed renal foods and basically geared up for a long fight. Except the first vet missed the baseball-sized tumor that Dr Coyle found, so in addition to our cat not getting the best treatment, we spent many hours and many dollars... concerned about fighting a long-term battle, for no reason. read more

Excellent care. Not only is care personalized, they take great care of each pet, and most importantly, give you guidance and coaching. At previous vets we got our shots, got a flyer with notes, got the bill, and got out. Through modern animal I am learning to be a better pet owner, and how to care for my pet with direct advice and coaching. Previously was at Los Altos Veterinary Clinic and the bills were 2x, they had incredibly strict cancellation policies, and it felt like they were in it for the money and I didn't learn much to be able to care for my dog on my own. Now I get personalized coaching, advice, recommendations and am a better pet parent. read more

Was recently there for my dog's annual exam and was once again so grateful for the care the team shows. I have an anxious dog, who prefers to be ignored by new people, until he's ready to say hello. Everyone we worked with essentially avoided looking at him, speaking to him, and even making eye contact with him until he was bounding across the exam room to get pets. We're always escorted right into an exam room to avoid the additional stress and distractions of other patients. And I am always able to complete my transactions in the exam room, so when he free, He's FREE! Thank you, as always! read more

Modern Animal is convenient because of the app, chat, and scheduling. Some locations are nice and airy, although the exam rooms don't always feel clean. Otherwise, the care you get here is very surface-level, and it feels like you are always working with a vet who just graduated. We took cats and dogs here for two years and just turned off auto-renewal. I miss the old mom and pop vets before everything out bought out by VCs because vets seemed more experienced and had a deeper understanding of conditions. They do not feel attentive, just textbook bloodwork and results. Buy the prescription food. They are a bit of a hive-mind with all the vets repeating the same stuff. There are threads about employees having to sign NDAs to work at Modern Animal, which probably explains their one-way of thinking. read more

I've been to two Modern Animal locations (Berkeley and Walnut Creek) and both have been amazing. This review is just for the Berkeley office. It's located right next to Café Réveille near all of the cute Fourth Street shops and Makers' Row. It's easily accessible on the 51B! We were promptly greeted and seen by the staff at the office, which was so clean and well-decorated with cute art on the walls and interesting coffee table books. It's always a plus when they offer us La Colombe cold brews and La Croix too! Our vet tech, Bethany was absolutely amazing at making our kitten Barbie (and us) feel welcomed by giving her a Churu stick and playing with her. She was able to get Barbie's vitals in a seamless manner. Her manner with animals was even more apparent when she vaccinated Barbie without a hitch! We didn't hear a single meow from her and she's normally quite vocal when it comes to these things. When it came down to payment, Bethany made sure to inform us of pricing before any vitals were taken or any vaccines were administered. The pricing transparency is one of the best features of a Modern Animal clinic since everything is listed on their website/app and the staff make sure to tell you how much everything costs at various points of your appointment.
