The disorganization, changed policies, and poor customer service were reason enough for me to consider changing practices. However, after witnessing deeply concerning conduct and lack of professionalism from staff I've made the difficult decision to transfer my dog's care elsewhere. On Monday, 10/19, I experienced the following incident, which ultimately resulted in my decision to no longer entrust this practice with my dog's care. While I was at the clinic picking up my dog's prescription, I overheard a male veterinary staff member speaking to dogs and saying, "shut the he** up" and "I'm gonna beat your a**". The front desk receptionist laughed and said, "Oh, those are his pets." I have no way of knowing whether they were actually his personal pets, particularly given that he was in the back area of a veterinary clinic where clients' animals are cared for. But even assuming they were, I don't understand how that makes the behavior appropriate. This is a veterinary clinic where people may be bringing in a beloved pet who is sick, injured, or dying. Clients should not have to overhear a veterinary professional speaking to animals this way and then hear another staff member laugh it off. To be clear, I did not interpret his tone as a serious threat to the dogs, nor did I witness any mistreatment of them. However, as a professional entrusted with the care of other people's animals, I found the language incredibly inappropriate and the receptionist laughing it off did not make it feel more appropriate. Hearing a veterinary professional speak to animals that way, and then having other staff laugh about it, completely eroded my confidence in the professionalism of the practice. I do want to recognize Dr. Bess who has provided excellent care to my dog for many years. My concerns are absolutely not a reflection of her, and I sincerely hope she finds another practice.

I brought my dog in for his vaccinations and was informed that veterinary technicians now administer vaccinations, nail trims are no longer offered, and a separate appointment is required to see a veterinarian. I explained that my dog had experienced difficulty breathing on the way to the clinic and needed his heart checked before they gave him shots as he is 16 and they had put him on heart meds. Instead of taking my concerns seriously, the vet tech went to speak with the veterinarian and reportedly told them that I was the one with an issue because I had anxiety about my dog getting shots! I was offered an appointment later in the day, but fortunately, my primary veterinarian called and told me to bring my dog in immediately. Upon examination, my dog was found to be in heart failure. So no, I wasn't experiencing anxiety about him getting shots. I was recognizing that something was seriously wrong with my dog. To make matters worse, my new veterinarian also raised concerns that Abby Vet Clinic had failed to appropriately address my husband's dog's abnormal lab results. At the time, Abby Vet Clinic had told us not to worry about those results as it's normal for some values to be off, but my new veterinarian said our dog needed medication. As a pet owner, I expect my concerns to be heard and my animals' symptoms to be taken seriously, especially when they involve something as concerning as difficulty breathing or dark colored pee. Pet owners know when something isn't right with their animals, and those concerns should never be dismissed as owner anxiety. I have lost confidence in this clinic and would not recommend it to anyone seeking veterinary care for their pets.

After my dog's cytology results came back, Dr. Lampart called me after the clinic had already closed. In her voicemail, she sounded saddened and asked me to call her back within an hour, but she deliberately gave me no indication of what the results actually were. I immediately called back well within the hour she requested, only to discover the clinic routed all after-hours calls directly to voicemail. I left a message immediately. She never called me back. The next day, after repeatedly calling the clinic trying to get answers, I finally learned the truth: my dog had an extremely aggressive form of cancer. The way this was handled was inexcusable. The voicemail made me think there was still hope. Instead, the results had already been received, and I spent nearly an entire day anxiously waiting while the clinic withheld a diagnosis that turned out to be devastating. If you're going to tell someone to call back within an hour, you should either answer the phone, check your voicemail, or make arrangements for someone else to deliver time-sensitive results. Instead, I was left wondering while my dog had a rapidly progressing disease. After learning the diagnosis, I specifically requested to work with another veterinarian because I no longer felt comfortable communicating with Dr. Lampart. Rather than respecting that request, the clinic spent over a week delaying medications my dog desperately needed. I repeatedly requested prednisone--a medication commonly used to improve comfort and, in cases like my dog's, potentially provide additional weeks or even months of quality life. Instead of acting with urgency, I was repeatedly told they were waiting for approval from the very veterinarian whose handling of this situation had already destroyed my confidence. Every day matters with an aggressive cancer. When I finally expressed my frustration and said their delays were costing my dog precious time, the receptionist immediately became defensive, told me she would not be spoken to that way, and informed me a manager would be calling me. There was no empathy. No acknowledgment of why someone might be emotional after being told their dog is dying. Just defensiveness. This clinic seems to have forgotten what veterinary medicine is supposed to be about. People don't bring in a pet--they bring in a family member. We trust veterinarians not only for their medical expertise but also for their compassion, communication, and professionalism during the hardest moments imaginable. I spent thousands of dollars on diagnostics, treatments, and medications. The least I expected was timely communication, empathy, and prompt medical care when every day counted. Instead, I experienced poor communication, delays in treatment, a lack of urgency, and staff who appeared more concerned with defending themselves than helping a dying animal. I cannot recommend this clinic to anyone who values clear communication, compassion, or timely care. Losing a beloved pet is heartbreaking enough. No family should have to fight the very people they're paying to help them while their companion's time is slipping away.
