Thank you Dr Schaffer!
Dave M.

Best.vet.ever! Dana Schaffer was the most patient, competent and caring vet we've ever had - and there have been many! She took her time making Genesis, my German Shepherd, calm and comfortable before doing a very thorough exam. She explained her thinking clearly, gave background literature and was also very cost conscious in her treatment recommendations. So grateful that she's just around the corner! A++

A condolence from the staff on the passing of my kitty, Teddy.
David N.

I received a hand written sympathy card from UVH on the passing of my kitty, Ted. Many of the staff wrote notes of condolences. Goodness. Someone there must have seen my Instagram post. How very beautiful and thoughtful to think of Teddy. Words cannot describe my gratitude for the love and kindness. Mahalo nui loi.

Nalu the Maltipoo!

Dr. Lam, always exceeds our expectations with his expertise and friendliness. We greatly appreciate you more than you know! Shawn Vet Tech you are awesome! You seem to have a special gift to reassure and comfort Nalu (Maltipoo) and also help calm us as well. We are confident in knowing that Nalu is getting the best care possible! The staff Josie, Christin provide excellent Customer service as well. Best regards, Judy

I would give this place 5 stars. However, when I came in for my cat's yearly checkup in 2024, Dr. Sirkis had started the appointment accusing me of not caring for my cat's pain and was not willing to hear anything edgewise related to my cat's medical history once she had formed that opinion. When she found the mass in my cat's throat, her tone changed from rude to just plain awkward. "Oo... *wince* He has cancer." As I started to ask about his prognosis while crying and hyperventilating, she gives me a "Yea... Sorry" and "Well, when do you want to schedule the euthanasia?" I was shell shocked that someone who was supposedly regularly interacting with patients would so callously bring up putting down my child. I responded that I would make an appointment with an oncologist (who was infinitely more patient and sympathetic, shout out Dr. Kidd!), and she responded with "Well, if you want to go see someone who's going to say exactly the same thing I did, sure." After the appointment, I double checked with the nurse who came out with my cat to make sure there was truly nothing to be done. In contrast, she was super gentle and sympathetic, and she let me have a good cry. She was a real one for helping me keep it together. Later, when Dr. Sirkis called me with my biopsy results, she continuously brought up euthanasia over and over again. Nothing about keeping my cat comfortable or how long I might get to keep him around. Just "euthanasia" "when do you want to euthanize" "euthanizing would be..." It was cruel and heart wrenching. I asked her to stop talking about euthanasia and to never contact me again. She still sent me a generically printed get well card, rub a little more salt in the wound I guess. The issue is not that she wants me to consider euthanasia. It's that she was heartless and cruel in her demeanor. She was the person I was supposed to depend on during this process, and instead, she made the grieving process even more isolating and emotionally taxing. I felt uncomfortable even having to contact the hospital for more pain meds just in case I would have to talk to her again (in which, even though she knew my cat was in pain, would insist on only giving me a few days dose worth, so I would have to continuously make trips for more medicine, even though the oncologist was perfectly fine giving me a week or two's worth). I literally waited until only now to post this review because I finally moved and don't have to fear the possibility of this horrid shell of a person potentially taking out her displeasure on my other cat during an appointment. She's a terrible person, and since she was so willing to kick me down when I was low, I will say that her last name is perfectly fitting for a clown like her.

The disorganization, changed policies, and poor customer service were reason enough for me to consider changing practices. However, after witnessing deeply concerning conduct and lack of professionalism from staff I've made the difficult decision to transfer my dog's care elsewhere. On Monday, 10/19, I experienced the following incident, which ultimately resulted in my decision to no longer entrust this practice with my dog's care. While I was at the clinic picking up my dog's prescription, I overheard a male veterinary staff member speaking to dogs and saying, "shut the he** up" and "I'm gonna beat your a**". The front desk receptionist laughed and said, "Oh, those are his pets." I have no way of knowing whether they were actually his personal pets, particularly given that he was in the back area of a veterinary clinic where clients' animals are cared for. But even assuming they were, I don't understand how that makes the behavior appropriate. This is a veterinary clinic where people may be bringing in a beloved pet who is sick, injured, or dying. Clients should not have to overhear a veterinary professional speaking to animals this way and then hear another staff member laugh it off. To be clear, I did not interpret his tone as a serious threat to the dogs, nor did I witness any mistreatment of them. However, as a professional entrusted with the care of other people's animals, I found the language incredibly inappropriate and the receptionist laughing it off did not make it feel more appropriate. Hearing a veterinary professional speak to animals that way, and then having other staff laugh about it, completely eroded my confidence in the professionalism of the practice. I do want to recognize Dr. Bess who has provided excellent care to my dog for many years. My concerns are absolutely not a reflection of her, and I sincerely hope she finds another practice.

The x-rays were supposedly clear, along with bloodwork, and they also did an ultrasound on her abdomen, but none of them showed the obstruction. They referred us to PETS to get a specialty ultrasound where they finally found the obstruction, but i was quoted $8-10K for the surgery she needed to save her life. I lost my job earlier this year and I am not in a position that I could afford that amount for surgery, even with using my savings and maxing out all of my credit cards. Thankfully, Dr. Lee at PETS coordinated with VCA Encino and found an intern (still a licensed vet, they are just completing the required clinical hours) willing to do the surgery on a Saturday evening, AND the price was capped at $2500 for the surgery and overnight hospital stay. I immediately drove from Berkeley to Walnut Creek and they took her back right away. If it wasn't for Dr. Lee and the PETS team, my dog would have died. I am truly so grateful that she went above and beyond to find a solution for us, and I was able to take her last night to get the surgery she needed. I also wanted to give a huge shoutout to the front desk team. Every single person I spoke to was unbelievably patient, kind, and empathetic. There's nothing worse than going through one of the most difficult and traumatizing things as a dog parent, and being met with indifference and passive aggressiveness. That was my experience at SPEC, but definitely not at PETS. Thank you for advocating for us, and thank you for saving her life.
