My dog overdosed on his med in the middle of the night (yes, it was my fault ). Took him to the Emergency service within 30 minutes and the really nice night vet had his stomach empty in no time. He's doing great and the experience was really smooth. And pretty affordable, all things considered. I have one complaint, though. I called twice to the front desk to ask a couple questions about a prescription for my dog. The woman on the phone was not very helpful at all. She couldn't answer my questions and kept referring me to their website, not knowing where on the website I could find what I was looking for.

I can only say good things about my first time to this clinic. The staff were incredibly attentive, informative and empathetic. They took my dog immediately to the back, kept me updated and informed. They went above and beyond the initial reason why I brought my dog in and addressed a second less urgent issue. The gal at the front desk gave me a LOT of support. Explaining to me that things happen fast sometimes and not to blame myself for my dogs condition. ( I researched it myself later and realized she was right ) But she eased my guilt a great deal in the moment. They even gave my pup some supplemental IV support because she is a mature lady. Since thank you for helping me so much at 1am

I've cried everyday for a week. I don't know if the pain of losing my best friend will ever go away. But exactly a week ago my cat I've had ever since I moved to the Eastbay had reached total Kidney Failure. He looked and felt miserable and he could no longer eat or walk. My wife and I called every doctor that does euthanasia home calls, my veterinarian, as well as every possible pet hospital because it pained us to see him suffer. Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital was the only place that said they could have a room available to provide the euthanasia. They sedated him and gave us our last moments with him. Even though it felt like talking to Khal Drogo/Jason Momoa in the Game of Thrones right before he died...I said goodbye and told him I loved him and that he was the best kitty. We then rang a bell and the procedure took seconds. The total for sedation, euthanasia, and communal cremation was $507. A little pricey I think, but who cares when all I think about is losing my best friend, and that I would pay anything to have him back. I received a card from the Doctor today which is thoughtful. So I appreciate and thank Berkeley Dog & Cat Hospital for being there when I needed them because the one thing that makes me feel better is the fact that he is no longer suffering now.

They patiently endured all kinds of rudeness, borderline harassment, and ungrateful treatment from owners who were clearly stressed about their animals. It was very obvious that everyone who works here has the safety and health of the animals in mind, even when the adults are less than grateful. Everyone whose pet was stable was seen in order, which took some time because while we were there they got 2 different animals who required emergency treatment and were immediately rushed back. While we were waiting the staff chatted with us and generally made us feel really welcome. The vet was very clear and understanding about what was going on with our dog and we left with the right treatment and medicines. She is now feeling much better.

My youngest cat, who we only had for less than two years, has shown sign of chronic gastrointestinal issues and every time we've take him in, they weren't as compassionate. Within his less than two years of life, he's been to the ER for the same symptoms four times. Three were at PETs. We chose to bring him here because of our past experience with our girls. For his care here, the vets were evasive and push incredible expensive diagnostic that didn't actually solve the issue. Every single time they just gave him pain meds after blood work and radiology showed nothing wrong. We didn't want to say anything, but Dr. Peterson seemed to be on a stimulant or some kind of meds while she spoke to us. She kept repeating the same questions over and over after we answered them and was talking a mile a minute and continously interrupting us. It was jarring. She wouldn't refer us to a specialist or internal medicine unless we wanted to pay even more. This is very predatory. Thankfully, we brought him to another facility for the same situation when we couldn't make it to PETs. After gathering records from that office and PETS, this facility called me and sent me a list of internal medicine practices I could take my cat to. They did this without forcing us to come in or saying they couldn't do it unless we did more procedures. They got back to me the same day with his records. This is a stark difference from how we were treated at PETs. PETs didn't send his records for several days. They spelled my name wrong several times after asking me multiple times how to spell it and continued to say they could help us further unless we wanted to pay more. They have become a money-grabbing predatory practice. And I can only say this with confidence because of the stark difference on how we were treated at PETs vs the other facility. Even though we completed intake over the phone, we were asked to fill out the same information again on paper, and we weren't seen until ~15 minutes after our scheduled time. We also spent a long time waiting due to a lepto test. We were initially told results could take up to 30 minutes and that the assistant would check with Dr. Holliday to see if we could leave and come back. About 20 minutes later, we were told we only needed to wait 10-15 minutes total--by then, we had already waited most of that time unnecessarily. Follow-up was the most frustrating part. The front desk was responsive through the online portal, but not helpful--they repeatedly said they would "leave a note for the doctor" or were "waiting for the doctor to finalize their notes." We later found out test results were available on Tuesday but weren't released to us until Thursday. For an urgent care visit, this delay felt unacceptable. We requested SOAP notes and lab results on Monday for insurance purposes and had to follow up multiple times to get documentation that should have been readily available. The medical care itself seemed thorough, but the administrative side was lacking. Given the cost (urgent care exam alone was $147), I expected a more efficient and timely process. Overall: kind staff, but poor follow-through and delayed communication. For urgent care, I expected a much greater sense of urgency.

I was a little hesitant because the location is in west Oakland. We had always been to VCA in SL but I knew it would cost us an arm and leg. So I decided to call first to see what I needed to do to get my doggo seen. I spoke to Isela and she was very friendly and informative. She told me how to handle my pet and how to get there. Maps has you drive up to the building but you should actually park in their lot. Their lot is off Adeline, before the under pass. Go up to the gate and press the call button for them to let you in. I let Isela know my dog is reactive so waiting in the lobby was not ideal. Luckily there were rooms available for my husband and I to chill in before he got seen. The staff is super friendly and told us the wait would be long. Although there weren't many people that night, they had some animals with bigger emergencies and surgeries were happening. Totally understandable, this is an ER. We were taken to a room to wait and a vet assistant was right behind us ready to take vitals and notes on what happened. My doggo was in good spirits but I could tell he was a little anxious. We were told that there would be a 4-6 hour wait for a vet to see him and sure enough by the 4th hour our pup was taken to the back to get seen. After they took him back, finance came and let us know what the plan was and the cost. Look, if you can't plan for these emergencies for your pet, please don't be surprised with the cost. I will say VCA would've probably been more expensive but that didn't matter. What mattered to me was my dog and his care. Financial did say we had to pay the full amount and then we'd be refunded if some things weren't needed. She also told us that the doc will be in soon to explain what was next. Dr Black was the attending vet this night and she is the sweetest. She had no judgement and told me why some things were maybe needed and why they charged as precaution. It's all good, just a long as my boy gets better. She did explain what procedure she was going to do, as well as recovery and possible recovery symptoms. We were then told we could go home and they'd call us once the procedure was done. It had been about 5.5 hours since we were there and we were tired. After another 4 hours, almost reaching midnight, we were told my pup was ready. My husband and I drove back and even took my son who was so anxious about his "brother." We've had my dog since he was 4 months old, so yes he's my son's brother. Staff was talking to my son about all things marvel and that really helped put him at ease. We were then given instructions and medication and sent home. Service was amazing and I highly recommend OakVet for your emergency needs. I will be donating to them soon!
