My dog overdosed on his med in the middle of the night (yes, it was my fault ). Took him to the Emergency service within 30 minutes and the really nice night vet had his stomach empty in no time. He's doing great and the experience was really smooth. And pretty affordable, all things considered. I have one complaint, though. I called twice to the front desk to ask a couple questions about a prescription for my dog. The woman on the phone was not very helpful at all. She couldn't answer my questions and kept referring me to their website, not knowing where on the website I could find what I was looking for. read more

Overall, fine. I was a patient of this clinic basically ever since I got my first cat in 2018, the staff are amicable, appointments are easy to get, and they see you promptly and update you on your pet's condition often. I would give this place 5 stars. However, when I came in for my cat's yearly checkup in 2024, Dr. Sirkis had started the appointment accusing me of not caring for my cat's pain and was not willing to hear anything edgewise related to my cat's medical history once she had formed that opinion. When she found the mass in my cat's throat, her tone changed from rude to just plain awkward. "Oo... *wince* He has cancer." As I started to ask about his prognosis while crying and hyperventilating, she gives me a "Yea... Sorry" and "Well, when do you want to schedule the euthanasia?" I was shell shocked that someone who was supposedly regularly interacting with patients would so callously bring up putting down my child. I responded that I would make an appointment with an oncologist (who was infinitely more patient and sympathetic, shout out Dr. Kidd!), and she responded with "Well, if you want to go see someone who's going to say exactly the same thing I did, sure." After the appointment, I double checked with the nurse who came out with my cat to make sure there was truly nothing to be done. In contrast, she was super gentle and sympathetic, and she let me have a good cry. She was a real one for helping me keep it together. Later, when Dr. Sirkis called me with my biopsy results, she continuously brought up euthanasia over and over again. Nothing about keeping my cat comfortable or how long I might get to keep him around. Just "euthanasia" "when do you want to euthanize" "euthanizing would be..." It was cruel and heart wrenching. I asked her to stop talking about euthanasia and to never contact me again. She still sent me a generically printed get well card, rub a little more salt in the wound I guess. The issue is not that she wants me to consider euthanasia. It's that she was heartless and cruel in her demeanor. She was the person I was supposed to depend on during this process, and instead, she made the grieving process even more isolating and emotionally taxing. I felt uncomfortable even having to contact the hospital for more pain meds just in case I would have to talk to her again (in which, even though she knew my cat was in pain, would insist on only giving me a few days dose worth, so I would have to continuously make trips for more medicine, even though the oncologist was perfectly fine giving me a week or two's worth). I literally waited until only now to post this review because I finally moved and don't have to fear the possibility of this horrid shell of a person potentially taking out her displeasure on my other cat during an appointment. She's a terrible person, and since she was so willing to kick me down when I was low, I will say that her last name is perfectly fitting for a clown like her. read more

I honestly don't take time to write negative reviews but this one is serious. There are red flags at this place and I would honestly proceed with caution. The quality of care has gone down. I found that the quality of care has gone down ever since this switch and ever since they stopped their emergency services. I had to bring in my cat a few times because he had late stage kidney disease. There seems to be a lot of disorganization, unprofessionalism and lack of transparency. I had a vet tech tell me that my cat will live a long time with subq fluids and guess what? After 1 month of subq fluids my cat died. Do not tell patients this to even get their hopes up. This is just not good practice. Some of their techs are a gamble and disorganized. One person I recall, was actually very helpful named Lily (I think?). The next person I got, who seemed new, had to be told 3 times what medications I would be receiving that day. Came back into the room and asked if I wanted to pick up the meds elsewhere. Why would I go anywhere else if I'm literally there? He also didn't know what some of the vaccines were but asked if I wanted to get one for my cat. They prescribe meds but don't even go over the quantity or anything so by the time you get to the counter it's some astronomical amount. You literally have to advocate for yourself here every visit, every receipt, every prescription. It's just the service is disorganized on an administrative level. And when you're dealing with a dying animal, sometimes you can't think clearly and need to trust your vet. This is the worst thing now. On my most recent vet visit last week, I brought my cat in for a recheck exam, which I didn't realize would be his last. We had already seen Dr Cienes twice and this being our third time I understand already that my cats prognosis was poor, but if you're going to charge a recheck exam fee, then actually do the checks? This wasn't done. All they did was weigh him and regurgitate the same info. After, my cat developed a terrible flare up of stomatitis that in just 3 days became fatal and I had to put my cat down. Also when I was trying to schedule a euthanasia appointment there, I received 0 compassion over the phone. I am so glad I cancelled it and went with at home euthanasia. I did not mean for this to be lengthy but it just feels more about a money grab and not centered on quality care. I hope they can figure it out but they have now lost me as a patron. read more

I'm embarrassed that I don't know how to spell her name, but Naia, Niya, the person who runs the front desk, she's the most calming person on the planet sometimes. I have really bad anxiety. And my shrink has a real sense of humor telling me to get a dog for it. I've been in this ER for some real shit, but also some just me being anxious shit. No matter what it is, she's never dismissive. She's never condescending. I'm always relieved to see her face. My dog is also obsessed with her. Everyone else here is great too. Also, the nurses are great. The one tonight gave me pee pee pads because my very high dog is leaving a trail. They've been very useful as my entire apartment smells like pee, but that can all be mopped up off the floor and thankfully thrown away off the couch and bed. read more

I need to warn other pet owners about what happened to my dog Milo at Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital. It was such a distressing and unethical experience that no one else should have to go through it. On October 10, 2025, my mom and I brought our 7-year-old Shih Tzu-Yorkie mix, Milo, for a simple fox-tail check because his paw was red and irritated. We were seen by Dr. Kassidy Leon, who immediately insisted on doing a "blind exploratory surgery", cutting his paw open without first recommending an ultrasound or any non-invasive test. Had we known an ultrasound was an option, we never would have agreed to surgery. After the procedure, Dr. Leon said she didn't find anything but sent Milo home bloody, swollen, and in pain, with no antibiotics, no pain meds, and barely any after-care instructions. Within hours, his paw was oozing pus and he was crying from pain. I had to rush him back the next day just to get ointment, and even then, no one took responsibility. A few days later, on October 14, we saw Dr. Tong for an ultrasound, the very test that should have been done first. Dr. Tong found the fox-tail that Dr. Leon had missed during her surgery. This confirmed what I feared: the surgery was completely unnecessary and caused Milo's infection and suffering. To make matters worse, one of the technicians (Jen) yelled at me in front of the entire lobby that same day, calling me "aggressive". Her tone was hostile and unprofessional, I was honestly scared to leave my dog there after that. By this point, Milo's paw was worse than before we came in. He was limping, bleeding, and terrified. We spent over thousands of dollars at this hospital, and it feels like all they cared about was charging for procedures, not helping our dog heal. I have since filed a formal complaint with the California Veterinary Medical Board and am sharing this review so other pet parents don't go through what we did. Please, if your vet here recommends surgery without offering other options first, get a second opinion. You and your pet deserve transparency, compassion, and ethical care. Just went in with my dog to get annual vaccine and discuss options for basic care. Why I am giving a 2-Star is the fact that the vet couldn't be bothered to meet with me after I asked twice. So this review is entirely a reflection of the doctor. To be fair and transparent, I have a reactive dog (mostly to strangers) and I've gone to many trainers who have said that he is unlikely to change his extreme reactivity without aversive training which I am just not too keen on. So I deal with it the best I can and like to explore more humane options. It's a journey. Back to today.....At a previous visit, with another vet here, I had asked, in extreme cases like my dog, what can be done? We briefly discussed sedation options. It's a last resort but sometimes it is needed. So, I wanted to discuss that so that I could get him examined, at some point....i had hoped we could do that today, but would have liked the opportunity to discuss. I wasn't even bothered that they would charge me a vet visit even if a discussion. Instead of taking the time to understand the situation, the vet sent the tech out and said he was uncomfortable being in the same room as my dog has attacked them, which is grossly misrepresenting his reactive behavior. He is reactive when approached but he is perfectly fine sitting in a room with me while I discuss care. Not to mention, my dog was on meds to temper his anxiety. The vet first asked I put him the car. But it's high 80s so i wasn't going to have my dog stressing out in the heat. Since I was t willing to do that, The vet will say it's because he wasn't muzzled. If we'd had a discussion, I could share that I've tried muzzles I can't seem to find one that works. My dog gets it off immediately and the stress of trying to get it on is just too much. So all I wanted to do was TALK and feel heard. Again, he is perfectly fine sitting in a room with me. Instead, it felt more like shaming me for my dog's behavior which is largely due to his extreme anxiety and not aggression. To the tech, thank you for your help. You were respectful and kind. They went above and beyond the initial reason why I brought my dog in and addressed a second less urgent issue. The gal at the front desk gave me a LOT of support. I find their written and phone communication excellent and their doctors, vet techs, and staff unfailingly professional, knowledgeable, and polite. Incidentally, I truly sympathize with the reviewers who feel upset with vet costs. I don't like the spike in expenses for these services in recent years either, and it's terrible to forgo a treatment or test for our sweet friends simply because of price. I'd give it zero stars if I could! I took my dog to get neutered and surgery for his cherry eye. They gave me a price, but when I picked him up after the surgery, the price was lower, which I thought was strange. I noticed a stinger coming out of his eye, and it looked very irritated. When I told the doctor, she said it was normal for them to come out, whatever that means. She was about to leave the Berkeley Dogs and Cats Hospital and go to Petaluma, or so I was told. Mind you, she didn't do the job right, and she wasn't even a specialist for the eye to perform the surgery. This place came recommended to me by a couple friends. I hear there have been some internal (management?) changes lately and I wonder if that is why my experience was not great. The good: the front desk staff are friendly and efficient. Estimates were accurate, no weird hidden fees, and they sent records to my pet insurance quickly. The vet techs were friendly, sweet to my companion animal, and attentive to details (shout out to William in particular). Both vets I worked with seemed knowledgeable and diagnostic testing was thorough. The bad: started with an odd interaction with a vet asking me to hold my cat so that he could examine her urethra for a blockage. Seemed confused when I asked for instruction - I am not generally up in my cat's genitals, I dunno the right position for examination! Not a big deal just odd. Generally during the exam he wanted to me to hold my animal which I found odd; never had a vet do that before and my cat is not any happier to be there if it's me restraining her without the proper skills. The second vet I saw fortunately didn't do that but I was alarmed that when we talked after the tests and exams, he was prescribing a course of treatment without knowing she was already on meds for the condition and having breakthrough symptoms - even though I had detailed her meds to the tech and the front desk confirmed they were in the chart. When I brought my pet back for continued testing, I wrote out the med schedule and doses which the front desk scanned into my chart. Then I detailed them with the vet tech. Again when I talked to the vet later he did not remember that she was on meds and had not checked the chart before determining the course of action. I think the in-office testing was thorough and I trust his interpretations but I felt like I had to advocate hard to get proper care bc he wasn't reading her chart. The other issue that really concerned me was the ultrasound. They had me being my pet in at 8 AM even though the ultrasound person was not scheduled to come in til 3 PM - "just in case he comes in early." This seemed strange to me and lots of unnecessary stress and fasting for my cat, who was being evaluated bc of problems with eating and did not need a fast! In total, she was there for 11 hours for the ultrasound. I asked about food/water and they told me she had water available to her but did not drink any - and they did not give her any injection fluids which seems bizarre. I was also told a slightly concerning value on a urine test that day may have been from dehydration. Cmon guys... They also did not offer her any food after the ultrasound, even though again the main issue here was around not eating and needing to eat. But even if not the issue, how are you having someone's pet for eleven hours and not offering them any food?? So in sum: I think the diagnostics were good and the vets knowledgeable, but the level of care was lacking, and I could not relax and feel my pet was in good hands. I would come here again in a very urgent situation like an accident bc it is close to me but otherwise I think I would try a different urgent care/ER. read more

I've cried everyday for a week. I don't know if the pain of losing my best friend will ever go away. But exactly a week ago my cat I've had ever since I moved to the Eastbay had reached total Kidney Failure. He looked and felt miserable and he could no longer eat or walk. My wife and I called every doctor that does euthanasia home calls, my veterinarian, as well as every possible pet hospital because it pained us to see him suffer. Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital was the only place that said they could have a room available to provide the euthanasia. They sedated him and gave us our last moments with him. Even though it felt like talking to Khal Drogo/Jason Momoa in the Game of Thrones right before he died...I said goodbye and told him I loved him and that he was the best kitty. We then rang a bell and the procedure took seconds. The total for sedation, euthanasia, and communal cremation was $507. A little pricey I think, but who cares when all I think about is losing my best friend, and that I would pay anything to have him back. I received a card from the Doctor today which is thoughtful. So I appreciate and thank Berkeley Dog & Cat Hospital for being there when I needed them because the one thing that makes me feel better is the fact that he is no longer suffering now. read more

We recently had to put our beloved boy Cooper to sleep, and decided to come to this vet to do it. He was almost 17 years old. We were given the most comfortable and loving environment for it, a dim room with background music and a couch, and the vet was very reassuring and helpful the entire time and helped us understand that we were making the right decision. Early morning on March 5th, my dog had a seizure after falling off the bed, and I rushed to this emergency clinic in a state of panic. When I called, the woman on the phone insisted on asking unnecessary questions rather than confirming if they were accepting new patients. Upon arrival, she was cold and dismissive, insisting I pay the exam fee upfront and provide my Care Credit account number to verify I had enough funds--something I've never encountered in over 15 years of using the card. I was then asked to fill out a DNR or CPR form, and when I took a moment to thoughtfully consider such a harrowing decision, she became impatient, sucking her teeth & rolling her eyes. She referred to my dog as "she," and when I corrected her, she appeared annoyed. When I tried to accompany my dog into the exam room, she rudely said that, for privacy reasons, I was not allowed to go back--though I later saw another pet owner allowed to do so. While Dr. Bosire was kind and professional, I shared my concerns about the woman's rude behavior. Unfortunately I did not get her name, but told him I would be leaving this review. Her lack of empathy during such a vulnerable time left a lasting negative impression. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this clinic based on the unprofessionalism I experienced. read more

I had a deeply upsetting experience at this hospital a while ago, but at the time I was undergoing cancer treatment and my father was dying, so I didn't have the capacity to post about it. I'm speaking up now because a friend of mine just recently had a similarly horrible and overpriced experience with her dog, and I feel people deserve to be warned. When I brought my cat in for an urgent issue, I gave clear directives about how he should be treated (hydrated and medicated before a procedure), which the staff ignored. I was pressured to make decisions under emotional duress, denied adequate time to consider options, and told by Dr. Harpaul Sanhu that my cat might "bleed out" if I didn't immediately agree to further treatment. After I ultimately agreed to move forward, they suddenly refused care -- even after taking my cat away and having me sign an updated invoice. I later took my cat to Marin/San Rafael emergency clinic, where the veterinarian evaluated him and said that a blood transfusion was not necessary, contradicting Dr. Sanhu's alarming assessment. The second vet prioritized minimizing stress and provided a far more compassionate and clinically sound approach. This clinic prioritized money and control over patient care. I have since filed a formal complaint with the California Veterinary Medical Board. If you are considering bringing your pet here, please think twice. Their treatment of both animals and guardians is not what you would expect from a place claiming to offer compassionate care. read more

Bringing our beloved 3yo dachshund to Berkeley Dog & Cat after he was sideswiped by a car is the biggest regret of our lives. He had no external signs of injury and was initially stable but was denied the chance of life due to the inadequate care he received. He had significant internal bleeding that was evident from his blood tests but the "full-service" hospital could not perform a CT scan as we were told they had no one to operate it, they had no surgical capability (not even for a simple chest tube), and were staffed primarily by relief vets with no continuity of care and differing opinions. They do not keep blood yet did not recommend transferring him to a facility that did and instead he was left to bleed out until he eventually had a cardiac arrest. Despite the merely palliative care he was given, we were charged $13,214 over two days and my wife (in floods of tears at 1am) was asked to pay additional charges just minutes after holding his dead body and later that morning when she picked him up to take him for an autopsy. There were no signs of any medical leadership and the medical director they had listed on their website was taken off after we filed a complaint. We later learned that this once storied practice was quietly sold to private equity (PetVet Care Centers, who are owned by KKR) in 2017 and if you read the reviews on Indeed/Glassdoor/Reddit you will see how employees feel about the management and workplace environment they foster both at this location and nationally. We don't see how emergency care can be safe under these circumstances. Despite bringing up our concerns we have been completely stonewalled. Please do the research we wish we had done and know your other options locally, especially for emergencies. read more

As a consequence they refused to give me a prescription for flea meds unless I came in for a wellness check. Which obviously is unnecessary as he goes regularly for tx at Oakvet. I discovered my dog laying in the bed with his tongue completely out of his mouth, barely breathing and unable to stand up. I brought him in. He was happy to see me he was normal in every way. So I took him to my regular vet. The Vets I wanted had no appointments. I can't get the Vets nor management to contact me to this very day. The administration front desk manager, Katherine (not sure on spelling )needs another job. This is not for her she gets super overwhelmed, can't handle job duties and she's just plain rude. She hung up on me without giving me her name several times. She had the audacity to say she couldn't find the info because many of "my pets name" died that day. What kind of human says that to another human who's pet has passed away just 2 days before? I had to follow up with them several times for x-rays, signed documents, documents and to speak with someone about how I was and still am being treated. I just found out that the Vet, Tane McKee that tended to my pet was just a sub. She was nice but...that was never divulged to me and the seizure notes not valid. They can't seem to get it right. I had to pay $1,600.00 still waiting for information but they sure collected their money. It was suggested that my pet should be euthanized. I am having so many second thoughts about what was suggested to me and if my pet could still be alive today. It's the worst feeling ever. It's been 37 days since her passing and I've yet to hear from them. Niyambe, thank you for giving Katherine's name but I am still waiting for someone to get back to me that's above her. Tabreya and Wes are excluded from this review. To make matters worse...they made sure to send me not 1 but 2 condolence cards, just sinister! Let's start with the positive: the staff was very friendly and kind and seemed to be experienced vets. I brought our two rescue kittens here for their follow up vaccine at 4 mo. I was not given the right information when I called ahead to schedule them and did not get a correct cost estimate. After 1.5hrs I was told that they needed various different vaccines and that the cost estimate for both was ~$800. They offered a $25 first-time visit when I called and that I had to pre-pay before I arrived. That wasn't reflected on the bill either so I asked to correct that and let them know that I would take the kittens to another vet to get the vaccines. After 10min of waiting (this is 1.5hrs into the appointment) I left the room and the front desk told me that I was good to go as I had already paid. I then found out from the other vet I went to that they didn't read the vaccine record correctly and that the kittens needed one more vaccine. Overall I got them vaccinated for 1/3 of the cost estimate at another place. This is my first encounter with the American veterinarian system as a pet owner and I'm appalled by this experience. read more

Our dog ate something that had him feeling pretty bad, we took him to Berk dog and cat around one in the am. They suggested he stay with them for about four hours and recommended he take a certain medicine . We agreed( this was about $600. We get all call to pick him up, he is doing much better. We leave and he is not much better . In the morning he is still not better . By two pm my daughter is talking to the vet again and the vet said to come get more doses of meds. I call them and say "it didn't work last night , why should he take it again? The vet said that I should give the pills they sent us home with. They did not send us home with the pillls they were talking about. The vet said that the way those work is if you continue with the treatment that they had given him while there. Dr. Shimura saved our cat's life by performing an emergency surgery -- she is an excellent surgeon and a compassionate doctor. She even checked up on our cat on her days off to ensure he was healing properly. Dr. Kassie gave the initial x-ray and ultrasound and was equally kind and professional. They both laid out all the options for us and helped us arrive at the best care plan for our cat. The whole staff was so supportive and accommodating throughout the multi-day process, and every employee we interacted with was willing to help how they could. The front desk kept us entertained with heartfelt conversation whenever we had to wait. A visit to the vet is rarely fun for people or pets, but Berkeley Dog & Cat made the process as seamless as possible. $187 emergency exam fee will diagnose most cats with UTIs which is a $10K bill even though the cats do not have a UTI. showed up at about 3am because i thought it was a 24/7 Pet Hospital and rang doorbell but nobody at the front to let in even though there were cars in the parking lot. when we were finally let in our cat was long gone and the black receptionist with braids seemed not happy that she was called out from the back to work. no greeting and just simply a sigh before asking questions and a nasty glare. they could've asked to see my animal right away since no one else was in the establishment but instead wanted us to fill out a check in form while holding a limp pet. if you're looking for a reliable and not overcharged vet with courteous staff, please go give PETS referral center nearby your business since they actually deserve it and are actually open 24/7 with technicians coming out right away to see us and get our pet into a room. if you're wondering how come everyone talks about this place overcharging, it's because the vets need to be able to afford their ferraris parked right outside. the medical industry is a business, yes. but when you run your business to the equivalent of a sleazy mechanic shop that wants to scam you since you're not back there actually looking at what could be wrong since you don't have the tools at your disposable, word spreads fast of your reputation. read more

The most disgusting and heartless humans. Brought my dog in after being attacked by another dog. Her leg is seriously injured and she can't walk. They did x rays and 3 hrs later brought her back out and said there was an emergency and they'd call with the x ray results. 20 hrs later and no information. The person at the desk knows nothing and says the mgr will call me tomorrow - 2 days after the appointment. My dog is in extreme pain and we have no idea what is wrong and what the treatment should be. We were charged $1500 for literally nothing. read more
