Macchiato
Harsha S.

I was driving around as I saw this small bakery & cafe. I noticed it was relatively new. I went there a little bit after lunch around 1 PM. The cafe was pretty packed when I arrived there. I was greeted as soon as I entered and asked if I needed any help. I noticed that there was a gelato station in addition to the bakery and general cafe items. The cakes here reminded me of what I usually see at Asian bakeries. I ended up grabbing a Macchiato and Coffee Cake. I was handed a number and grabbed at an empty seat a table. The coffee + cake came out about 5 minutes after I ordered. Not sure I've ever had this kind of coffee before, but it was quite strong. The coffee cake had 3 layers of cake and then a tiny layer of coffee/vanilla buttercream between each one. Each of the cake layers were like a spongy texture. The bottom layer of the cake seemed like it was either soaked in coffee or espresso. The top two layers didn't seem like they had been soaked, but from what I could taste, they definitely had drops of coffee added. On the top of the cake, they had a thicker layer of coffee buttercream with chocolate. The cake wasn't overtly sweet and definitely had the coffee taste throughout the cake. I also noticed people near me eating injera and curry so that would be worth trying if I revisited. I would like to go back at a later time and try the gelato! The prices were reasonable and the quality of the food seemed good.

Pastries and cakes on display.

I was looking for a new coffee shop when I stumbled across Moderena in a derelict, half-empty mini-mall in Richardson. This place definitely feels more like a diner, with booths and tables, and more like a pastry shop with an impressive selection of cakes and treats. There's a breakfast menu which features vague offerings such as a "full breakfast" and "scrumbled eggs" I tried a latte which was rich and very, very foamy. I also treated myself to a flaky sweet profiterole.

Beautiful ambiance, kind customer service, and delicious food and deserts here at Moderena! The owner is from Eritrea (East Africa) and makes incredible Italian inspired cappuccinos and pastries. The fuul here is delicious. Give them a try for a wonderful cafe experience.

Amazing coffee spot in a cool Walnut Hill complex…read more I like the vibe here and their coffee is always on point. I've only been during the day and always spend a little time working before a coffee meeting. The WiFi is always good and the coffee is great. The ambiance is very open and inviting as well. They serve small bites as well but I haven't really partaken. Additionally, I think they have several beers on tap and they appear to all be cool local brews. If you're looking for a good local coffee shop with a vibe, this may be your new spot!!

This coffee shop has quietly become my Dallas work-week crush…read more It's conveniently close to the office I'm using while I'm here, but the real draw is the vibe. Beautiful sunshine pours through big windows, there's a lovely park right outside, and the light is so good it feels like the café equivalent of a good hair day. Dallas weather helps, obviously--but this place knows how to use it. The space is lively without being chaotic. Plenty of outdoor seating, lots of indoor seating, and a very reasonable three-hour Wi-Fi window that keeps people working instead of camping. It feels intentional. People come here to stay, not hover in line. Speaking of which--there's never a line. They're clearly well staffed, everyone's efficient, and everyone is genuinely nice. Now, pastries. This is where they shine. A lot of unique options you don't see everywhere, and everything I tried was excellent. The almond croissant? Fantastic. The blueberry cake? A must-get. I went two days in a row (because obviously), and on day one they told me it was their most popular item. Day two, by 11 a.m., it was completely gone and kept selling out as soon as they tried to restock. That alone tells you what you need to know. The matcha is good--made from scratch, which I appreciate. Is it the best matcha I've ever had? No. It's better than Local Johnny's, but not quite on the level of Marin Coffee Roasters or Ralph & Rose. Still very drinkable and enjoyable, especially if you're settling in to work. What really sets this place apart is its personality. It doesn't feel like a cookie-cutter café or "insert minimalist coffee brand here." There's charm. Character. A little whiteboard with a joke about New Year's resolutions that made me smile. Small details, but they matter. Would I come back? Absolutely. I already did--twice. I'd recommend it especially for locals looking for a solid work spot, co-working with a friend, or anyone who wants to be productive without being bothered. If you're visiting Dallas briefly, this might not be a destination café--but if you're here for a bit and want a reliable, pleasant, sunny place to work and snack, this one's a yes.

The wave of Muslim owned coffee shops are definitely taking the country by a storm and we are absolutely here for supporting our local coffee roasters and business owners as well giving wings to much needed social third spaces. La Souq is located in the heart of Richardson right on Main Street. With ample parking and lots of seating both indoors and outdoors, this establishment really sets itself apart as a perfect place to unwind and have a little pick me up. I especially love the neutral earthy tones of the interior, blending timelessly and giving an elegant and airy, open vibe to the entire space. If I lived in Dallas i would be here every weekend with my laptop. The cashiers are always super kind and friendly, always greeting you with a smile. I haven't tried any of their baked goods because I am religiously a matcha girly through and through. The matchas I've gotten here have been pretty good for the most part but the quality does vary slightly depending on who is making them. The vanilla matcha had no sweetness to it whatsoever which was very odd. Same goes for the fig matcha, the syrup was just not cutting it in flavor and the whole drink felt very milk heavy. I always ask for an extra shot of matcha and they just two times my drink just wasn't made strong enough. However, this past weekend I finally got my wish with the strawberry matcha which was made very very well and I was blessed with the extra matcha just as I like it. I think they should definitely work on standardizing drink consistency and quality to keep repeat patrons happy. Other than that I find this to be a wonderful gathering spot where my cousin and I love to come hang out and enjoy being around community and people of all walks of life.

Merit is very popular in Dallas, so expectations were high walking into this location--and…read morevisually, it delivers. Super cute space, great music, and a cool, relaxed ambiance that immediately makes you want to stay awhile. There were about a dozen seats total and it was roughly 80% full, which felt lively without being chaotic. The two girls behind the counter were absolute sunshine--warm, bubbly, and genuinely welcoming. That alone made the experience feel good from the start. Service was also lightning fast; my drink was ready in under two minutes. Now, the letdown: the matcha. They don't make actual matcha here. Instead, it's a pre-made mix that gets heated and combined with whole milk. For matcha lovers, this is... disappointing. The flavor was extremely bland--drinkable, sure, but uninspiring. I'd have it again only if there were no other options nearby. And that's the thing--this location is very close to the Civic Coffee area, which makes it hard not to recommend going there instead if matcha is your priority. All that said: great ambiance, pleasant experience, friendly staff, and moderate pricing. Nothing bad happened here at all. Just don't come expecting a proper matcha moment--this one's more vibes than flavor.
