Took multiple emails to get them to respond. When they finally did, they didn;'t answer several questions laid out in the initial email, nor subsequent ones. Wanted to charge $700 for delivery for a piece that would fit in a large backpack and refused to say if we could drop off/ pick up. Finally, after several weeks, stated that they "had just checked" and would not be able to upholster my item after all, as it wasn't part of a larger (and presumably, therefore more $$$) set. There are probably better deals to be found. I commissioned them to reupholster a Knoll style sofa a friend gave us six years ago. They were a little newer in the game and did the job for about $1000. I provided my own forest green Lee Jofa wool felt that I scored for $2 a yard. It looked good for a few months, and then the foam quickly went wonky and the felt started sagging. It wasn't the end of the world, but I didn't beat my cats when they carved up the arms. Six years later I checked in with them to see how much they would charge to reupholster it again. I mentioned that my sofa was on their website and asked if they remembered much about the job. They said they lost my file when they changed the system, but would email me. They quoted $1550 plus the cost of fabric. If I wanted to use my own fabric, they would charge a 10% COM fee. Then $75 per foam cushion (six total), $125 if the seat deck webbing needs to be strengthened, $7 per button tuft and $200 for roundtrip delivery within the 5 boroughs excluding walkup fee, if applicable. That's nearly triple all said and done than I had paid before. I politely wrote back that I could buy the exact sofa brand new in the color of my choice for $1600 from someone like Joybird. If I look on Ebay and settle for a color like gray or brown, it's $1000, free delivery. read more

I had two Dodo leather chairs that were dyed by a company recommended by the Italian manufacturer. They did a horrible job and ruined the leather. I contacted Mod Restoration and they organized to have a carrier pick up my chairs from Massachusetts and deliver them to their workshop. They helped me with leather samples and undertook to reupholster the chairs that now look better than when they were new. I cannot say enough on the quality of the finished work. First of all let me say the quality of the work done is EXCELLENT. We really loved the fabric we selected and I am sure this helped us love the end result even more so but the finished product is EXCELLENT. I had to amend my review posted yesterday because today I received OUT OF THIS WORLD customer service follow up from the owner. And just for the record I never had a complaint about the quality of work. I was never disgruntled about the work - it is worth every penny especially if you are a perfectionist like me. I was a little disappointed however over a what I now know was a disconnect between what I was told during steps within the intake and implementation process and the actual reality of certain logistics (delivery) and selecting a textile. Part of the confusion stemmed from not being clear on my options on how you go about getting your textile. You can have MOD order it for you or you can order it yourself. MOD use to embed a jump link within its website to another website for ordering textiles which led me to believe such company was affiliated with MOD. Therein lies the rub; I noticed there can be a price difference between the two but it totally depends on what's the going rate at the time. MOD runs independent from any third party supplier. I am very grateful that head management reached out to me today to clear up and rectify any discrepancies. I have not encountered that level of customer service laced with pride and integrity in ages. Management understands how this can be confusing from the customer's perspective and so promptly removed the reference. The work is stellar and better than you can imagine when you finally get to see the end result. This along with thoughtful customer service makes the overall experience a very positive one. I had been looking for an upholsterer for a while now and the photos of work from the ones in my price range didn't knock my socks off. When I clicked on the Mod Restoration website at their home page, I knew these were my kind of people. I wanted my crate and barrel sofa to have more of an Jonathan Adler look, and low and behold, they tell me that Jonathan Adler is one of their clients. My emails had been with Hanny, which as someone said below, was extremely prompt in her replies. Sim came last night to consult and pick up my sofa and ottoman. I had already let them know I had purchased my velvet fabric from an industry source. Sim knew to ask me not only which I direction I wanted the fabric (warp or weft, aka Railroaded), but also which direction I wanted the warp to go (up or down), as my velvet fabric had a lot of shine in one direction and was darker turned 180 degrees. (I opted for darker). He also brought a couple of Kravet books of velvet and linen (for another project) I asked for, just in case my fabric was not appropriate for the sofa. When all was settled, I gave them 1/2 for deposit and they took the sofa away. I was impressed that Sim had a very small credit card swiper that worked with his blackberry (which wasn't getting service, but still, I was impressed). I will update the review when the sofa and ottoman comes back, but so far I am pretty happy! And in case it matters - Hanny (noted I haven't met Hanny yet but have seen pics) and Sim are a seriously adorable hipster couple. read more

I am so grateful to Mod Restoration for their careful and detailed work reupholstering and restoring the wood on my vintage Eames lounge chair. The chair was my father's and he died this year, and it is way more important to me than an ordinary piece of furniture. The leather was shot - it literally had holes in it with stuffing coming out - and the wood was dull and dry. It came back absolutely gorgeous. The cushions fit the shell perfectly and the wood is glowing. Lauren at Mod was really helpful throughout the process, including dealing with my indecisiveness about the leather and sending tons of samples. Although it wasn't cheap, I'm hugely grateful to have had such attention and care given to the chair. Consider proceeding with caution - from my experience, this company does not have your best interests at heart. In addition to delay of timing - Mod displayed very poor business practices. Example: To confirm scheduling of the delivery of my items, I was asked to & provided a photo of a personal check on Saturday. On Monday morning Mod deemed the check image not sufficient as payment and thus Mod cancelled delivery for that afternoon. But then later their owner was emailing me to negotiate a reduction of the invoice amount as accommodation due to my extreme frustration with the service & committed to "wait for my response" & for me to issue a new check. On the same day, at a similar time the Mod Team leveraged my check details to pull the full original contract amount from my checking account. It wasn't until the next day the owner alerted me that her team already e-processed my money out of my account. This coincidence of timing indicates that the decision to seek funds via my account was an act of nefarious in intent - a means to strong arm me into paying full price despite fronting with customer service oriented rhetoric. [update 11/23/15] My furniture has been returned safely. No accommodation was made by Mod for the 3 days I was required to take off of work given the multiple delays/cancellations of my delivery. Nor was it ever acknowledged that the owner committed to "wait for my response" to adjust the invoice & have me issue a new check while the Mod team went ahead and processed my previous check for e-payment without alignment. read more

They did a very quick turnaround of a whole danish modern style sofa and chairs for me. Hanni worked with me for a couple of hours (a long time), going through thousands of swatches. I recently had MOD reupholsterer an antique couch that has been in my family for 3 generations. After many overwhelming trips to fabric stores on the lower east side, I called and spoke to Hanny (such a sweetheart) and she let me know that during the initial consults with the designer, Sim, he would be more than willing to help me select a fabric. He quickly caught on to the fact that I wanted to stay more traditional with the covering and guided me toward those fabrics, using a elimination process that was very helpful. He picked up one last book to go through and I ended up stopping him on a fabric that I suprised myself by falling in love with. A very modern tangerine. I think it really suprised us both! We also agreed to tighten the springs for a small additional charge and move from the traditional 3 cushion couch to a bench seat. (much more comfortable for napping!) Sim noted a particular date that I wanted to try to have the couch back and Hanny called to arrange for deliver on the exact date. The couch is absolutely beautiful. The couch has extremely ornate wood carving and I noticed a slight scrape on the top of the couch. Sim was extremely responsive - he came out to my apartment on the day I called and not only fixed the scratched, but polished the entire top of the couch. The professionalism and customer service I experienced with Hanny and Sim was exceptional. Even the delivery guys were all smiles while delivering my couch in a rainstorm. Worse customer service I've ever encountered. I called the company to get an estimate for an upholstery of a perfect rectangular seat cushion. I've provided dimensions and asked for a rough estimate. The lady who answered the phone ignored all the information I provided and asked for a photo. I asked her if she needed dimensions to which she replied "no" and she kept asking me to send the photo and give her my zip code. Needless to say, I did not get an estimate. She simply could not imagine what a rectangular looks like even with the dimensions provided. What a poorly ran business. But the next morning I noticed that there was still a little bit of staining left. This was a Friday, so I left them an email on their web site and expected them to address it the following week, but sure enough I received a message back asking if I was free the next morning for the technician to come by. So not only do they stand by their work and will do what it takes until you're satisfied, but they will come out on weekends, as well. And soon after the follow-up visit I received an email inquiring about the visit and making sure I was satisfied. I got other bids, and was impressed at MOD's strategy for keeping the price within our budget: we had chairs from the 70s with foam inserts surrounded by cotton channels filled with down. Another company said we needed to re-fill each channel with new down and replace the foam core; MOD's suggestion, since we were on a budget, was to use a bigger foam core so that the smooshiness of the down channels didn't matter. The chairs are about a million times more comfortable and firmer now, and they look amazing. Professional, prompt, excellent communication with Hanny -- what more could you ask? read more

Mod did a stellar job on my Milo Baughman Thayer Coggin mid century modern sofa. I am picky and have a cat that trashed the original bonded leather/pleather finish. It was important that I find a fabric that could combat cat claws, they helped me look through volumes of fabric and kept the communication going through all phases of the project. They could not have done a cleaner, more precision job, sticking to the look of the original design but modifying it with a removable seat cushion. Reupholstering is not inexpensive but it's certainly worth it if you want to keep a treasured piece. read more

I'm a furniture designer and needed a prototype seat upholstered for a show recently. I sent out multiple quote requests and and got back similar numbers but the reason I went with Mod was because of the way they continued working with me through an evolving design. Most fabricators will write you off if you change the design after a quote. Melissa worked quickly to get me updated numbers and lead times. What put them above and beyond was that they took the time to meet with me personally and go through my design to understand what I was trying to accomplish - they actually sewed a few samples right there so we could look at them. The piece came back within the lead time and it was a very well received at the show. Just had an 18th chair reupholstered by Mod. It looks really stunning!! So, don't be put off by the name if you have antiques - they're not just about mid-century. The workmanship is wonderful & everything was completed on time. There were some glitches initially but all was worked out by Hanny (one of the owners.) I appreciate that she got personally involved. It shows they really care about customer service. I supplied my own fabric (needed to match other pieces) but would recommend having them source fabric. MOD Restoration was amazing when they recently refilled my couch cushions. Not only does my couch look like new, but their customer service was fabulous. They responded immediately to my many emailed questions. Being able to correspond by email was great for me since I didn't have constant phone access. Yes, MOD does excellent work, we can all agree on that. They also take a LONG time doing it. I paid for expedited work and from the time I had an in-home consultation to actually receiving my chair back took 10 weeks. The delivery service that MOD uses to pick up the chair and return it makes very infrequent stops to my Brooklyn neighborhood. I also could only pay with a check so I'm not sure what that guy was talking about who paid with a credit card swipe on a Blackberry. I wish I could have had that experience. read more
