Wall mural inside MOD Pizza

While walking around I decided to stop at MOD Pizza for lunch. I have been here a few times before and have always enjoyed my pizza. Once, during the pandemic, they were unable to get a delivery of crusts and were able to offer only cauliflower crusts. I tried it and thought it was wonderful. Today there were no shortages and I was able to order anything on their menu. I chose to order their Calexico pizza because I like chicken and spicy food. The Calexico has red sauce, mozzarella, gorgonzola, chicken, jalapenos, and hot buffalo sauce. I asked them to hold the gorgonzola though. After a short wait, between 5 to 10 minutes, my pizza was brought to my table. I was the only customer at the time, so I guess the staff decided to just bring it to me. Once again, I was very happy with my MOD Pizza. One of the reasons I like it so much, besides the great flavors, is that their crust is paper thin! I prefer to aspen my effort chewing on the toppings, not the crust. Also, fewer carbs for my digestion to work through .

Always fresh and delicious. Salads are to die for! It's pizza you can feel good about! Healthier than any other pizza options on Island.

For years, whenever we'd visit Coupeville, we drive past "The Roost", dismissing it as "just…read moreanother beer-and-pizza joint" Driving through the neighborhood on Easter Sunday, "The Roost" was one of the few eateries that was open. (And they had a nice, covered outdoor patio seating area, where our dogs were welcome!) However, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food! They do have beer and pizza -- but we opted for the salad (healthy) and the Pork Belly (perhaps not so much). Both were five-star delicious! And the view from the patio is also pretty darn nice. We'll be going back!

What's not to like, right? Well... We ordered the sausage and added their garlic mushroom special topping. While the crust had just the right amount of char, it was really chewy. It may be grown and milled locally, but it lacked the crispness and airiness of a good Napolitano pizza crust. Also, we paid an additional $8 for the mushrooms. There were minuscule amounts on our pizza. There wasn't that much of sausage, either. We ordered a glass of Sangiovese and another of Tempranillo. They were imported and fairly acidic. Why not take advantage of the great WA wines? The guy handling the orders (dark hair and a good amount of ink) was great. He apologized that they had just run out of the Walla Walla onions we wanted to add to our pizza. He gave us a reasonably good estimate of the wait time. When we finished our wines and decided to change our dine-in to to-go, he made it happen with no issues, despite dealing with a long line of people placing orders.

There is some street parking, but we ended up parking in a public parking lot north of the cafe. The place is cute and charming, and it's decorated with art that is for sale. The menu on the wall was just for drinks, and their food menu was laminated nearby for us to peruse. We had a nice chat with JJ (who I think is the co-owner), and he was very bubbly and nice. It was fun to witness his kindness to other customers and neighbors as they came in. This place seems very involved with the community. There are a few tables both outside and inside. The TV behind us was playing Pandora for radio music. Nearby, they had some free chocolate-covered coffee beans and your own water and silverware station. I got an Arnold Palmer, and boy, was it tart! I got my own sugar to try to sweeten it up. I also ate the Ricky Ricardo panini, and it wasn't my favorite. The aioli wasn't flavorful enough for me to notice, or maybe it was missing, and the pickles were too thick. I didn't love the flavor profile on this sandwich, and it was pretty hot (in temperature) to eat, so I had to let it cool down a bit. Connor loved his smoked salmon toast! There were a ton of capers, so lots of salt there. The herbed cream cheese was the star of the show, with the flavorful toast being a close second. He really appreciated it. I think I'd be happy to come back and try a different sandwich.

The space is cozy and a good vibe for a date night. We loved both of the dishes we tried, especially the scallop risotto. All the seafood was fresh and cooked really well. The miso cod had the perfect crispiness on the skin and the scallops were perfect. All the tabloids went really well together. The cocktails were not bad, but not our favorite part of the meal. Everyone was super friendly and we really appreciated that our server knew exactly when to check in and give us space. He also picked up on the fact that we wanted to share all the dishes so he brought them out one at a time. When we ordered dessert he added in a candle since he knew we were celebrating and brought out extra dessert wine and goodies too! We appreciated the attention to detail :) Definitely a must try in Whidbey!
