It's been pretty disappointing the last couple of times I've ordered for pick up. The last pizza didn't have the items listed on the order ticket and it tasted meh and dried out. They use to have the best salads but I've been underwhelmed lately. I usually order mushrooms and had to look around for them. The positives are they usually are ready on time for pick up and the chocolate dessert is tasty - very reminiscent of Ding Dongs but better! I ordered online and picked up at the store and had a good experience. I was specifically interested in the cauliflower crust and it was great. But of course I made a rookie mistake and selected just 1-2 too many ingredients- which leads to a more weighed down pizza. I would advise anyone getting a MOD pizza that the crust is thin- so think limited in terms of toppings- for a more balanced bite and pleasant expereince. I would deifnitely order again. read more

Im going to preface this review by saying that Ive been a huge fan of Mod and have always encouraged my friends to try it, but the last few experiences at this specific location have been less than ideal. I typically make my orders online to save time. The last few times, however, we've had to wait at least 15 minutes past our pick up time for our order. This most recent trip, we had to wait about 25 minutes past our pick up time (and we placed the order 12 hours in advance). Another customer walked in, ordered, and walked out with his order (which appeared to be a larger order than mine) in the time it took my order to be completed. I could have saved time by just walking in! When I brought these pizzas home, I realized why the order took so long. They were obviously overcooked to the point that at least half of it was inedible. I went to MOD for the first time. The guy making my pizza was very cool and patient as I loaded on a dozen or so toppings onto my pizza. The pizza came out fresh, hot, and tasty. Nothing was burned, and the crust was just a little crispy. Perfect! You can get as many toppings as you like and they have a ton of topping options, probably more than 20. The lemonade and berry lemonade were really good. Nice and tart, but also sweet. They also have pitchers of craft beer for just under $12 which is a steal. We got a little over 3 pints from the pitcher, so not bad at all! I'll post a picture of my pizza later. For $9 this pizza is a pretty good option for a quick relatively inexpensive meal. read more

I found out that MOD puts a paper beneath the pizza which they write on with a sharpie marker?? I was told by the manager that they are non-toxic, but they clearly don't know that sharpie markers are not supposed to be near food at all! (See below the wording directly from the sharpie facts page) When I expressed this to the manager about this I was told I would get a refund- which I found out later I didn't get, I just got extra points for another pizza? the marker was running on the paper and was on the pizza and I didn't see that till after I ate it? When I called again for a pizza I told them about how sharpies are NOT SAFE to be put near food and I saw it in their website I was completely ignored- she just kept talking as if I said nothing. I told her I didn't want that paper beneath the pizza! Here is what is clearly stated on the sharpie web facts page- "While Sharpie markers are AP-certified non-toxic, we do not recommend using them on areas of items that may come in contact with food or the mouth. Went for a late dinner last night, 8:45, 9. The line took maybe 15 20 minutes before it was our turn and the woman in front of us was frustrated by the woman in front of her. I think it would be great if MOD made some sort of rule (policy?) that if you are ordering more than 2 pizzas you have to order online or call or use an app (if they even have one) because the woman a few people ahead of us was ordering 5 pizzas all being topped slowly. If my pizza takes 5-7 minutes to assemble her 5 pizzas can easily take up to 20 minutes to assemble which is wild because assembly lines are supposed to produce more products be faster. I get that it is late at night and I am older than most the workers but it is like they don't even try to add energy or urgency to what they are doing. It is also interesting in these pay to watch 5 people make your food places you really easily see who the weakest link is and where the biggest problems are, last night it was the girl in the rugrats hat doing the sauce. Slow at asking what I want, seemed low energy or hard of hearing, told me they don't do mini pizzas in mega dough, fairly awkward at putting the sauce on. 2nd weakest was the kid doing the dough, my mini pizza dough was not a perfect circle but I was so glad it was finally our turn I figured it would taste good mo matter what. I know weakest is a strong word but there is always room to be better. The guy at the oven was the best. However, I forgot I can get sauce on top and he didn't ask if I wanted any on there so halfway through my pizza I was really kicking myself. This was my first time eating at Mod Pizza and I was so impressed by what they offer and their above-average service. Because I eat gluten-free and dairy-free, most pizza places do not make a pizza worth spending my money on (or don't make anything for me at all). The pizza they made me at Mod was delicious, and I loved that I could choose as many healthy vegetable, herb and other toppings as I wished! It was just how I would make a pizza at home. The negative reviews that I read earlier had scared me a little, but they weren't going to keep me away (I liked the pizza that I had at the Fremont location in 2016). I was excited when this location opened. To be fair, it seems to matter when you go here. My wife and I didn't have to wait in a line. Our server looked like Buddy Holly with a Sharks cap on. He struggled to hear me (the music was too loud). He was also a little dense. Still, he worked hard and was quick. There were 6 employees around (4 men and 2 women). They worked well together (I noticed before we left that one of the women was training the other one). She should have given us our soda cups right away, but our cashier stood out (she was friendly and cheerful). The guy making the pizzas impressed me too. He was attentive and had a good personality (a woman came in with a stroller, and the guy kept making a funny face at the infant). I didn't recognize any of them, but I enjoyed the songs that were played. A man came in with his wife (his afro had its own zip code). He studied the menu while his wife went to the restroom. I think his wife wanted to eat here, but the man wasn't interested. He could have received some more attention (our server briefly talked to him, but he was otherwise ignored), but he honestly came across as uptight to me. The seating capacity is about 80 (over 50 inside, and about 25 outside). The restaurant is spacious overall, but the tables inside are a little too close to each other. The men's restroom is small, but nice. It was clean when I used it (but not after). Attention To Detail: 2 of the men cleaned and polished some areas. They got on their knees and everything. My wife laughed at one point (the guy cleaning around the fountain machine was practically lying down for a moment). Just Chill: It was a little cold inside (it was downright chilly when we went to the Fremont location). This is one aspect of the chain that I'm not enamored with. The table we used should be replaced. It was pretty wobbly. A few tables are designated for handicapped customers. This is cool, but it did keep me from sitting where I really wanted to. An elderly couple sat near us. The man ate most of their pizza while the woman sized things up (she took in the surroundings so much that she even stared at my wife and I). Ah, yet ANOTHER useless food place in Castro Valley that closes BEFORE 11pm and midnight, even on weekends. I'm not sure why no one ever thinks about the latenight working crowd. For a (sort of) fast-food chain, I would expect MOD to be open late on the weekends until midnight or 1. Well it's a good thing the quality is not all that worth it LOL. Pros: All pizzas are the same price. Cons: All pizzas are the same price, which means they think they can make up for that by skimping on the toppings. The taste was pretty good (except the bland pizza dough bread, maybe I'll try double crust next time to see if difference) but seriously they need to be more generous with the toppings. Every time I've come here I've had the employees treat me so kindly, Lafayette has given me excellent customer service along with their amazing store manager (I believe) Monica, I come from a restaurant background and treating your customer's right is key to having returning business. I had such an amazing experience 6 months ago in Fremont. In Castro Valley, unfortunately, it's just like any other fast food. Spend 10 minutes being very precise about what you want. Get your order, realize they ignored instructions and put whatever they pleased in there. I ordered garlic bread with ranch sauce, no sauce. Why even ask?! This last order I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt but again it wasn't good and definitely not worth the money I spent. MOD pizza is known for its unlimited toppings, but I didn't expect a bonus topping: BPA. Imagine my surprise when I ordered my pizza online, brought it home, and opened the box to find my pizza (and my husband's) sitting on top of a very long receipt. And the receipt was stained jet-black. Yummmmmmy! BPA is commonly found in receipts that are printed on thermal paper, which changes color when heated (aka, when a hot pizza sits on top of it). BPAs are hormone/endocrine disruptors that can cause cancer, asthma, diabetes, obesity, and can have negative impacts on hormones and metabolism. Not something I want on, or even near, my pizza. Alright, alright, BPA is found in a lot of products. Sure, sure, everyone loves the argument that "everything causes cancer." Okay, okay, eating a pizza ONCE that absorbed a BPA-infested receipt probably won't do anything to me in the long-run. And yes, yes, I was eating pizza; obviously I'm not some health-nut. That's what I get, right? But come on! I think anyone with common sense would agree that placing a hot pizza on top of a receipt that turns BLACK when heated probably should be avoided. Not to mention that it's flat-out gross. And don't forget this information on MOD's website: "From hand-pressing our dough daily, to roasting our own vegetables, to banning the bad stuff - we've made it a priority to keep our food true. We're also mindful of animal ethics, environmental impact, and working with food partners that share our commitment to quality. If we wouldn't serve it to our kids, we won't serve it to you. It's that simple." Considering the FDA has banned BPA in baby bottles, I'm thinking that the owners wouldn't serve pizza with BPA toppings to their kids. It'll probably take this crew a couple of months to get the system right. The pizzas are kind of a no-brainer, but the system in which Mod functions is a drag, and might be its downfall. The line bottlenecks in 2 places - in the beginning when you order, and at the end when you wait for your boxed or plated finished product. One recommendation I have for management is to have more than 1 person at the end of the line. A poor young person had to be the only one boxing, plating, and calling out pizzas. Meanwhile, you have 5 young folks adding spinach on the line...didn't make sense. Hopefully in time they'll have lots of boxes made and ready to go, and a couple of people at the end so the delivery happens smoother and faster. I'd say that some of the folks making the toppings could work on chopping skills - red onions are cut way too chunky. Also, distribution - the guy I had put a handful of chicken only on one side of my pizza! Haha As for the most important thing - taste - not bad! Every pizza kind of depends on how you create it. I got the seasonal Phoenix and the Caspian. Phoenix pizza - loved the creamy white sauce and the big mushrooms. The balsamic glaze at the end was a nice touch. My wife hates me because I make her sleep on the couch because I sleep with my two lovely dogs, but to make you for it I buy her this pizza. This place is absolutely wonderful, I make sure so come in once a week just to keep my wife happy because, Happy Wife, Happy Life.. just kidding it's happy dogs, means I sleep like a log (because my wife is on the couch or in the guest bedroom and doesn't suffocate me with her farts) but anyways this pizza never disappoints me. My favorite time is to go in there in the afternoon and this one manager who wears a hat and is male is working, i'm not sure his name but you can hear in his voice he is so cheerful and it makes me forget my wife is a pain in the you know what. I love trying new things here because it never fails to disappoint me or my wife, this place is too good to even share with my dogs I want it all for myself. I like the mega dough so get that if you like thick crust, it's the same size as a mod pizza. Also the rewards app is nice and worth it. My wife made me get it but i'm glad she did. When I downloaded it the nice lady who was on oven told me I get a free cake, which I ate there so so I didn't have to share with my wife. I was excited to have a MOD Pizza open up in the Village so we stopped in on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. The place was busy but not super packed, which was nice. The line here moves pretty quick and I like their concept- thin crust pizza where you decide what toppings you want on it! The first time you come can be a bit overwhelming as there are so many choices, so what I did was choose one of their "pre set" classic pizzas and asked them to make customizations off of that, adding what additional ingredients I wanted. The person making my pizza was fine with me making adjustments so to those yelpers on here who were complaining that they are skimping on ingredients, I just say watch when they are making your pizza and if you want more of a particular topping, then just say so and they'll make it happen! Being that these are thin crust pizzas, they cook pretty quick. They've got a nice selection of drinks, including soda floats and some unique teas. I went to MOD Pizza last night, so a week after it officially opened. I went around 5:30pm for a kind of early dinner and I am glad I did! There was sort of a long line but not too bad then after we were in line for a while I looked behind me and saw the line out the door. Just like any other new place in Castro Valley, a lot of people go to it to try something new. The service was kind of slow but that's because there were a ton of online orders that the workers were trying to do in between customers that were in the store. I think the staff did a wonderful job working very hard to get people ordered as fast as they could. The service overall was great. MOD Pizza is like Pieology where you can create your own pizza or choose a pizza from their menu. It is as assembly line first with the sauce then cheese and toppings etc. I did a create your own pizza and also ordered a salad. They have different sizes of pizza and salads. For pizzas they have a mini which is a 6inch pizza, the regular pizza which is 11 inches, and then they have a 11 inch pizza with the crust double the thickness. For the salads they have a small medium and large. For my pizza I did the create your own regular 11inch. I used the white sauce, added a little garlic, mozzarella, chicken, spinach, olives, artichokes, Asiago, and parmesan. You can get as many toppings as you would like for the same price. I believe the pizza was around $8.50. For the salad I got the medium Caesar salad and split it with two other people. I enjoyed my pizza and thought it was good but not amazing. I am not sure if I like it better than Pieology. I think next time I will try another create your own or a pizza on their menu. Like the other reviews said, I think the spreading of the toppings needs to be distributed a little more evenly but I'm sure that the workers were get better over time. The pizza was burnt a little on one side but was still cooked well. I'm sure this will improve as everyone gets the hang out making pizzas. I thought the dough was good as well but a little weird in the texture. That might just be me though. As for the Caesar salad, I absolutely loved it! It is definitely one of the better Caesar salads I've had in my life. The salad was perfectly tossed and fresh. I also liked their Caesar dressing. It was a little different than other Caesar dressings that I've had but I truly enjoyed it. MOD has beer and wine as well as soda. My food was done right and they double checked to see if I needed any sauces of extra with my order. Overall a good experience. I feel so hashtag blessed that MOD Pizza has become an addition to the Castro Village. My sister and I stumbled upon it accidentally and have been hooked ever since. We were greeted by Erica, whom we'd never met, and our friend Joaquin. They both delivered excellent service and made us feel like family. They were also very friendly towards our nieces. The pizzza was disgusting. I usually love this pizza. But the crust was soggy and I asked for extra cheese and everything was piled in middle. AND the pizza was lazily cute one huge piece. Then weird small cut then weird cut.. had to recut to have a piece I had to put in air fry to crisp crust up to make edible. Same for husbands pizza. on 3-23-18 went inside the new mod pizza joint in Castro valley in the village was very impress, Brian very helpful in putting my sausage and mushroom pizza together. And asking me would like a little more toppings and course i said yes. my family owned pizza places for over 30 years. so i definitely know what a good pizza looks like and taste. I was very in press they don't weigh their ingredients, like the rest of them. Pizza was good tasting and the sauce was superb. Now for the awesome manager monika good people skills and a great personality, great choice as manager and very friendly. All and all great pizza and clean environment. would recommend. read more

I used to love eating salads from Mod Pizza but after this I don't think I will ever eat there again. I got a salad for dinner and mid meal discovered a large bug in my food. Needless to say I am super disappointed and will never be eating at this establishment again. read more

MOD pizza hasn't disappointed me so far! My only real comment pertains to one employee named Erica who was not friendly ONE BIT. She didn't smile or make any eye contact. She acted like she had better things to do. The pizza process was kind of difficult because of how unfriendly she was. I didn't really want her making my pizza tbh. I get it, I've worked with food before too, but it doesn't kill to work fast and smile at the same time. The rest of the employees provided awesome customer service! Specifically Addie and Jerrald who were there the last time I came here. They were awesome and made me and my friend feel super welcome. ^_^ read more
