Formerly known as Mochilato, this cafe is located at the Heritage Plaza. I'm still curious why it's just named mochi because if you don't know about this place from being here before, you wouldn't know it's a cafe. They should have added a "cafe" or something to give better branding. So I have been here many times before. Today I got a cappuccino and a croissant Taiyaki filled with red bean. It was not to-go but for here. They served me the cappuccino in a to-go cup when I see them having tons of cups sitting right there. So I asked them to give me a cup and I poured it over myself since you don't drink a cappuccino in a to go cup unless it's Starbucks or you asked for it to go. The drink itself was just ok and so was the taiyaki. It was not as flaky as it should have been. But more hard and the texture felt like the dough was sitting out without it being covered in plastic wrap. This place is definitely declined since my last visit. And fruit flies swarming by the sugar area... I hope for this place to do well and would never want to see it do bad. Hopefully this review is a wake up call and in turn motivates them to do better like when Mochilato first opened. I love to go to Mochilato for their shaved ice! This is the only place that has very a unique style of shaved ice. I love the Mochilato shaved ice. It contains bananas, strawberries, red beans, mochi, green tea syrup, and ice cream in the middle! Yes you all read correctly - green tea syrup and ice cream in the middle - both very very delicious! Every time I eat their shaved ice, I get so excited to get to the middle so that I could eat the ice cream! So far, nothing beats this place for shaved ice. The reason why I'm giving this place 4 stars is because the mochi ice cream balls are pretty pricey .. 1 ball for $1.50 . You could seriously just got to an asian market and get a pack of 6 mochi ice cream balls for 4 dollars (of course all will be the same flavor). However, the plum wine, coffee, pistachio, peach, and the almond nut flavored mochi ice cream balls are really good. The plum wine mochi has little chucks of plum in it. Another cool part about this place is that they have specials. I normally get the smallest special which is the junior shaved ice cup and 2 mochi ice cream balls. This feeds at least 2 - 3 people. The decor is very sheek with wood decorations everywhere. The inside has a japanese theme. The tables are large and there are enough seating for a large party. I have to first disclose that I'm a big fan of the Mochi that one can buy in a box. My favorite flavor is the Mango, so when I first found this place on Yelp, it was a must-try. I already decided I was going to give it 4 stars just for existing & wouldn't go any lower unless it was truly awful...& obviously there's room for 1 more star if it truly blew me away. It's a bit of a drive for my family & I, but after a day of bike riding, we wanted to treat ourselves. So we hopped in the car & drove. It was hard to choose flavors, but we decided to buy a dozen mochis. We ended up getting Cookies & Cream, Coffee, Green Tea, Tiramisu & of course, Mango. My children really loved the Cookies & Cream, so they give it 4 stars. I slowly made my way through the flavors...loving the creaminess of the coffee flavor & the softness of the outside layer. I wasn't a big fan of the green tea (my husband is) & tiramisu flavors, but that's simply just a personal taste issue. I'm sure that if you normally enjoy these flavors, you'll love it in the Mochi form. I wanted to save the Mango flavor last because I have a frame of comparison due to my borderline addiction to the store bought version. I slowly took a bite & was a little surprised at how different it tasted to the ones I'm used to eating. At first, I couldn't decide how to feel about it. I even went through a bit of an internal dialogue--It tastes different, do I like this? After a beat, I came to the conclusion that the Mochilato version is definitely fresher & has the more authentic Mango flavor--something that was lost to me before coming to this place. I have to say I will continue to eat the boxed, store-bought version...it's an addiction after all. But will we be returning? Honestly? Probably not. We are 30 minutes out of the way & really don't have much of a reason to be in this area. We paid $15.00 for a dozen mochis & it is WAY pricier than buying the boxed version at our local store. But yes, I recommend at least trying this place...especially if you're familiar with Mochis & want to experience a "fresher" taste. And it gets 4 stars for being such a unique dessert shop. Finally got to try this place tonight. I was really tempted to try the Macarons, but in the end, I got distracted by the Mochilatos and got 2 of those instead: Pistachio and Guava. Also tried the Mochilato Way Shaved Ice. Pistachio was a HOME-RUN for me. Guava -- maybe a 2nd-3rd base for me. Shaved ice got to 1st base, just because of the gelato and the fruits that came with it. Next time I'm here, I'm just going to try a few more Mochilatos and be well on my way to look for better shaved ice! read more

I've died and gone to heaven. All my favorite desserts in one place; I was like a kid in a candy store. Gelato ice cream, mochi filled with gelato, French macarons, shaved ice, and cakes. I was torn on what to get first. I stuck with the mochilatos since that was the speciality. I tried the pistachio, hazelnut, tiramisu, and red bean. All were delish. The tiramisu was especially interesting. It had a strong espresso flavor which I like. I can't wait to return and try the gelato and macarons. For the novelty factor, I really want to rate this place 4 stars. I was really excited the first time I walked in. It was a clean, hip place with innovative desserts--not only mochi ice cream, but also shave ice (i.e., pat bing soo, snow cone, kakigoori) with ice cream and beans and things like taiyaki and wagashi (Japanese confections) with beans. They have changed their menu, with the wagashi slowly being displaced by items such as their version of macarons, food items like kogi tacos, and most recently Beard Papa cream puffs. The changes in themselves are not a problem, since fusion is their selling point, and for a wagashi fix you can still go to Little Tokyo (old standby Fugetsudo, Mikawaya, etc). But I'm a bit let down by the execution. The last time we tried the shaved ice the beans were still hard (a result of adding the sugar before the beans are fully cooked). I had waffles with bean paste and gelato. The item was unhelpfully under the "taiyaki" section of the menu when in fact it was not taiyaki, and the waffle itself was a bit gummy. The takeaway: The desserts are good enough, but not amazing. I end up coming here every time I visit Irvine for the novelty factor and culture rush. I kind of wish there were more competition in the form of similar stores so they would step up their act, however. (Side note: I noticed on the website that they are under "new management." If I'm not mistaken, this store was originally an offshoot of Little Tokyo's Mikawaya, and the website no longer mentions Mikawaya at all. If the new management is not an Asian sweets specialist that may explain the novice mistake with the beans.) read more

On a random weekend sometime in the summer, my friend and I both agreed that we were craving macaroons. The first store that came up on yelp selling macaroons in the 'current location' on my friend's iphone was this store. Located in a plaza with other big markets/restaurants, this store is tucked away in between Daiso and a sushi restaurant. There is plenty of parking in the plaza. I tried the Coffee, and Raspberry macaroons. They satisfied my craving for macaroons, but wasn't too special in terms of flavor, texture, sweetness. The price per macaroon was average, at around ~$2 per piece. There is free water, and the inside of the store is clean. I should probably try their other items though, since the shaved ice and mochi ice cream look pretty good. Next time, I'll try it out. Bought a dozen of beard papa cream puffs n the FAM loved them. They loved them more than i do because my first impression of beard papa cream puffs was at the actual store in san gabriel. Nothing compares to my first taste. The person behind the counter was nice that he gave me two freebies. I think this place is good just by observing the fact that the place is full all the time. This place has helpful friendly service and very delicious frozen treats of all different flavors. Very good selection and it's conveniently located in the heart of Irvine. I love Mochilato! Any time I'm in the area, I always plan on stopping by. My favorite items here are the mochilato, which is a block of ice cream surrounded by mochi. There are a large variety of flavors - my favorite is green tea and cookies n' cream! There are also lots of other desserts here, such as gelato, shaved ice, macarons, cream puffs from Beard Papas, and they even sell Dippin' Dots. There is a small selection of coffee and teas as well. Unfortunately, the staff here doesn't do a very good job of clearing the tables once a party has left. It's not unusual to see a majority of the tables littered with trash, with all clean tables occupied. The interior is very trendy with lots of darkwood going on. There's a lot of different choices for dessert. If you like Mochi from Ranch 99, you'll love all the different flavors they have. We also ordered shaved ice in a combo deal - I've never seen a bigger pile of shaved ice in my life. Check the photos if you don't believe me! I would recommend eating it fast though, after a while the ice cream will melt. Make sure to wipe your mouth if you're going on a hot date, because the powder can get messy. If you somehow feel like eating 20, then buy a few at a time. I was satisfied after eating just 3. --Shaved Ice: Mochilato Way - Love. Comes with beans, strawberries, pineapple, kiwi, banana, mochi. The fruit, especially the strawberries tasted really fresh and sweet (but not too sweet) we all wanted to bring some home, but unfortunately we live in San Diego. The asian worker was the opposite of any fast food worker. She was cute, nice and happy. She told us that sometimes they have dry ice on the weekdays. Most likely won't on weekends, but there is a CVS if you want to go above and beyond to get your own cooler. If you're somewhere around Irvine, definitely check this place out. I didn't realize what Mochilato was until I saw them for myself. Mochi with gelato inside is genius! Their Cookies N Cream mochilato was so good! I should have sampled more of their mochi balls, but I decided to try their Japanese style waffle - Day & Night. Vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, hazelnut syrup, strawberries, bananas, & nutella all nestled atop a waffle. All the toppings were excellent, but I was extremely disappointed with the waffle. It did NOT taste fresh and was very chewy - felt like I was eating rubber. There is so much to try here in terms of desserts. In addition to the mochilatos, they also have yummy looking shaved ice, and cream puffs from Beard Papas. I will definitely try next time. And my BF ended up getting the tiramisu mochilato. I've been on a passionfruit frenzy for quite some time now, but the macaroon didn't satisfy my new found love of passionfruit. It was soft and moist, but the passionfruit flavor wasn't strong at all. As for the pistachio mochilato...you could taste the pistachio, but I didn't find anything special about it. Pretty good for my first time! A little pricey at $2 per Mochi ice cream, but it's nice to pick out your own flavors and do a mix and match! Their deal is buy 5 get 1 free, so it's just like a pricier, better flavored version than what you'll find in a supermarket! Strawberry, mint chip, and red bean were all good not-too-sweet flavors imo, whereas my friend thought her matcha coconut could've been a little less matcha-y if ya get what I'm saying, but she really liked mango and cookies and cream. Just went to Mochilato (irvine) for the first and very last time. We experienced the worst customer service by an associate by the name of "Jenn" who didn't care that she was rude to us. So much so that when she was preparing our food we could clearly and loudly hear her complaining about having to do the order. She stated "yeah i guess i don't have great customer service." Laughing and joking about it as if we were not in front of her face. I finally had enough and told her she could stop making the food that clearly was bothering her and i just asked for my money back. She was shocked by the fact that we stood up to her bs. The shift lead took care of comping our meal but he clearly was also annoyed by her dismissal and rude demeanor. As i was getting my money back i could hear her say "are you serious?!" Completely unprofessional. This was by far the worst customer service experience ever I hope the owner/manager reads this and genuinely addresses the unprofessionalism and outright carelessness. read more
