My favorite place in Wheaton for sushi. Always fresh and the service is friendly and fast.

Been going to this place since I moved to Wheaton 6 years ago, and it really is my go-to place for sushi on a hot day. The service is always friendly, and now they've added an hdtv to the restaurant to add a bit liveliness to the place. Before, you would walk in and hear soft japanese music and it was just a bit too serene for me. The food is always of a good standard, although I never like miso soup much myself. I recommend the seaweed salad and the Eel rolls; top notch. I usually just drink water to save a bit of money too! read more

The inside is small but looking beyond looks the food is awesome one piece of sushi I ate was orgasmic if your a real sushi eater you will love this restaurant the prices are fair and the fish is very fresh. This place is A-OK. The only restaurant dedicated to sushi, that I know of, in Wheaton. I come here when I don't want to drive all the way to Rockville to Niwano Hana (love that volcano roll). The sushi here is A-OK. The first thing you will notice is the size of the rolls. If I had a mini-me, he would love the size of these rolls, but they're too small for regular-me. The rice is sometimes slightly warm and delicious and sometimes cold and exposed to air too long. The sushi fillings are very okay. Overall, a nice, quiet sushi place that happens to be nearby usually. read more

The previous reviewer must not have visited this place in a long time... it's now a small sushi shop (8-10 tables) - not a falafel place. We went here just last week, and the sushi was wonderful. The eel was very fresh, and the miso soup and house salad was fantastic. Service was a little slow, but they were busy. You shouldn't write up a restaurant unless you've been there recently, and you're sure it's even the same place. read more

Just moved in across the street and was hoping that a good sushi place was within walking distance! After looking on yelp and reading a review I had to try it and sure enough it was great! I'm a sucker for sushi so I'm not very picky but the place was pretty easy to find (NOTE: on backside of building facing mall, not facing Georgia), very clean and the service was great. I sat down, ordered and within 4 minutes my good was brought to me! It tasted good and seemed fresh. No complaints here. Wish they would give you miso soup but oh well! On an early Saturday afternoon, I wanted sushi, and my friend wanted ramen, so we went to Moby Dick Sushi based on Yelp review of 4 and Google review of 4.5, and we were nearby. We love mom and pop restaurant. The place is cozy and quiet, just how we like it. I ordered the lunch special of tuna and spicy tuna roll, and my friend ordered udon, since they did not have ramen. The tuna rolls had good flavor, but the rice did not have the right doneness - it was too cold and a bit hard. The broth of the udon noodles was imiso based but kind of thin. The Latina lady who brought our food and utensils did not say a word or crack a smile both times. But the bill was cheap! My friend said she wouldn't return, I may give it a 2nd try to support small businesses. read more

I love Moby Dick. It's literally a mom-and-pop operation, so it feels very homey and authentic. Nothing fancy, just legit. And the sushi .... Fresh ingredients, expertly prepared, and because it's in Wheaton Triangle, less expensive than fancier locales. Don't be daunted by the humble exterior - this is a great little spot. Not much to add to the reviews which are pretty spot on. Good quality sushi, good presentation, small portions, high price (for what you get), and glacial service. It wasn't even that busy but it was busy enough that you shouldn't disappear in the back for 15 minutes with multiple tables looking around wanting to wrap things up. read more

I think maybe the low reviews are for people with different expectations. I'm giving five stars because for a cute, tiny, neighborhood japanese restaurant with reasonable prices, it exceeds all my expectations! Carryout is quick and easy, but dining in is great. I really like coming here. The staff is all very friendly and warm. Even when it's full it never seems to get too loud. I've tried several things on the menu. The sushi has always been fresh with good texture. After a crazy day at work I love to get a dinner box as a comfort food. It's a LOT of food. My favorite thing is the unagi donburi. I always leave very full with a bill somewhere around $20. If you live nearby and want a simple relaxing dinner- go here. If you are looking for something to knock your socks off keep searching yelp. read more

I always seem to forget about this place... It's no Yuraku (in Germantown) but I will give it four stars for convenience! The sushi is pretty good, especially for being so close to me. I have had a bunch of their standard rolls (salmon, tuna, spicy tuna, etc) and they're good... Not sure how you can go wrong with those. But most notable is their Washington roll - crab, salmon, avocado, green tobiko, and a little onion. Wow! If you're a salmon lover, you'll like this one. I also got the spicy tuna crunch roll. It was okay. It was too fried for me personally so I wouldn't get it again but if you like fried/lots of tempura, go for it! The sushi chef and staff are very nice but the place is on the small side. I've only gone for lunch or gotten take out so it's never been crowded when I'm there. 4 stars for location/convenience and freshness of the fish! read more

This place is delicious!! My dad and stepmom took my gf and I here at the end of our trip to visit them. The Maryland had real Chesapeake crabmeat and was fantastic. All the rolls we got were delicious. The service was impeccable and the prices were very low for such good sushi. The place is in a not-so-clean-looking strip mall, and the decor seems cheap, but the place is clean and the ingredients are top quality. Definitely gets approval from this pickiest of sushi-eaters. read more

Moby Dick Sushi is a small, family-owned restaurant that is located in a questionable looking area in Wheaton. As I've said before though, looks can be deceiving! Step inside, and it feels like home. Someone is always there to greet you and take your order. I've only gotten the california roll, the shrimp tempura roll, and the spicy tuna roll but it's so addicting that I keeping wanting to come back for more. We've been back once a week since we found it a month ago. Tucked away on the inside perimeter of Wheaton triangle (lots o' parking). I've been around long enough that I remember when it was a general seafood restaurant and went there a couple of times then (they said that was more than 18 years ago). We found this place because other sushi places we'd been to were either too expensive, or the sushi just didn't have that special, wonderful extra taste that sushi is supposed to have. Moby Dick is reasonably-priced, they make the sushi super fast and it's wonderful. Really nice Korean lady is the owner or manager. She's there every time we go. It's a small place, but we always get a table. Seems a lot of people come in to pick up to go orders too. read more

I've been to Moby Dick Sushi four times since June 2018. The first time, we enjoyed dinner, but were a bit surprised by the prices, which seem high for the area. Same thing the second time. When we went in November, I was very disappointed to find a long, black hair (definitely not mine) well embedded in my salad- after I had already eaten much of the salad! Accidents happen, so I tried the restaurant again in January 2019. One of the staff is very friendly and he came to take my order right away, and the food came reasonably quickly. But no one came to check on my table at all after the food arrived, even though I looked around a few times to catch someone's eye. Finally, once I had finished, I caught the server's eye across the room, and she raised her eyebrows and smiled, like, "Yes?" She made no move to come over, so I signaled that I wanted my check and a box. She signaled Check? and I nodded, and also signaled box. So she finally came over and said, "You want a box, right?" and I said yes, and my check. She came back with the box and then went and stood by the sushi bar, not doing anything, and I waited a few minutes for something to happen. Finally she came over and started clearing my meal, and I asked for the check again, and she said oh, OK, and someone brought it over. With two negative experiences, plus high prices, plus really difficult parking, I don't think I'll be back. read more

I'm very confused. I see a lot of wonderful reviews on here--which was the main reason I ventured out to Moby Dick in the first place. However, as one reviewer previously stated, I left the restaurant feeling a bit baffled by the experience. I went there expecting very fresh sushi, decently portioned and priced. What I received instead was one of the saddest dining experiences I have ever had. The meal began with an appetizer of agedashi tofu. It looked great on the outside, but once I bit into it I realized that the center was cool in temperature and not quite cooked. I was starving though so I ate it anyway. I found the sauce a bit sweeter than other agedashi tofu sauces I've had, and it lacked body, but it was acceptable. The sushi rolls arrived and I took one look--and started sinking in my seat. They were skimpy and ill formed, and a few of them were coming apart at the seams. The color of the fish worried me, fresh tuna should be somewhat reddish or plummy, not on the verge of brown. It looked washed out. The rice quality was a true shocker--it was HARD!!! The worst part was the flavor--the california rolls were dry and bland (and usually they have tobiko, this one had nothing but a few sesame seeds), and the spicy tuna roll was, for lack of a better term, gag-worthy. I had just had spicy tuna from Whole Foods earlier in the week and that was divine in comparison. I couldn't eat another piece of that roll. It truly seemed like I had been served a plate of sushi that had been left outside to dehydrate and ferment overnight. Next, I had orders of sushi from the a la carte menu--white tuna, salmon and uni. I thought, surely, at least ONE of them must taste fresh. And guess what. I was wrong again. This is the first establishment I have ever been to where the uni was served with long-grain rice sized mounds of wasabi sitting right on top of the uni. I don't think you're supposed to eat it this way, and I wondered if the chef put it there in hopes of masking the 3 day old flavor of the uni. I begrudgingly shoved it down my throat since it was 7 dollars for 2 pieces. The salmon and the white tuna were absolutely not fresh, but at least more edible than the spicy tuna roll. The bill was hefty for the portion that I received (and the portion that I somehow managed to get and keep down) and I left that place in a huff. First time ever that I didn't want to take the leftovers home. I later thought it best to at least give the establishment a call and let them know that something was not quite right. I asked if they had more than one sushi chef, maybe that could explain the inconsistency in quality. I was told no, there is one chef. Perhaps they were having a bad day, running low on supplies and were forced to use old stashes of fish? I was told no, and the exact words the waitress on the phone used was "he caught the fish today." Methinks... impossible. Fresh fish should be vibrant in color and look somewhat juicy. The fish at Moby Dick today looked weathered, washed out and processed, as if someone vigorously hand washed them in soapy water and laid them out in the sun to dry for an hour. Again, the saddest sushi experience I've ever had. I will say that the tempura that I was stealing off of my friend's plate was quite good. A serious 4.5 stars. So WTF man, why did you skimp out on the sushi!!!!!!! Grrrrr.... read more

Love the sushi here! Family owned and operated, a small and quiet place on a strip mall with great quality sushi. Favorites: spicy crunch tuna and crispy salmon skin rolls. Sashimi plate is also a pretty good deal for the quality and amount of fish that you get. Notice a lot of people coming in for takeout but enjoy the intimate setting (only tables of 4 so 2 people get a whole table). read more

I got really sick like an hour after eating the shrimp tempura. I will never go back and at one time I really enjoyed their food.

Simply delicious. Great value for freshly prepared sushi. I sat by the bar and watched the sushi chef work his magic. I ordered the Roll Combination A, which comes with 6 tuna rolls, 6 salmon rolls, and 6 California rolls, plus salad with a peanut and ginger dressing, and a steaming hot bowl of miso soup. Warning for the wasabi faint of heart: the salmon and tuna roll come packed with a pretty significant amount of wasabi, so lie low on the amount of wasabi you put in your soy sauce dipping bowl, unless you need a sinus cleansing. All this only set me back by $13.95. I've been struggling to find an affordable sushi restaurant....but I think I've found a winner! read more

Having driven by this place a thousand times without ever really noticing it, we finally decided to try it -- and were glad we did. I don't have huge experience with sushi, but everything we had was fresh and tasty, the service was good and friendly, the place has a certain physical charm, and the prices, if not cheap, seemed reasonable. We particularly loved the Washington rolls, with salmon, crab and avocado. We're adding this to our growing list of go-to Asian restaurants in underrated Wheaton. read more

Hidden gem in the Wheaton triangle. For a small lil restaurant in the cut it looks very presentable inside. I haven't ate inside there but I just ordered some salmon sushi and it was good to go. I'll be back with the wifey to enjoy some more soon :) read more

I am still new to the area and looking for good sushi. This place happens to be one mile from the casa so my husband and I rode bikes here for some rolls. This place is a little gem, tucked away in a tiny building at the backside of a stripmall. The setting is rustic Japanese with authentic tapestries and an impressive mask collection. To top it all of they have a modest but decent saki selection and the specials are fantastic. Their bento boxes for lunch and dinner are just the right portion size. Of course I have to mention their sashimi and rolls-SO fresh and delicious. This is a great little find! If you have a large party or don't care for their decor as I described...they will hook you up with takeout. I highly recommend this place! read more

Stopped by for a quick lunch and was happy with the meal. The service was good and we had 3 sushi rolls (crispy, spicy tuna roll, eel roll and a yellow tail roll). Tuna roll was good, had a nice combination of spicy mayo with a drop of siracha on top, the eel roll had a unique twist, eel was flash fried, very nice, as for the yellow tail, the green onion was bit overpowering. Also had the bento box A, teriyaki chicken was perfect, salad had tasty ginger dressing and was also served with some edamame and a California roll. Overall was a good lunch. read more

I'm dropping my rating to 3 stars. While Moby Dick remains my favorite place for sushi, the service was deplorable on my last visit. There were 2 waiters for the small number of tables, but they were not clicking. In fact, I'm not even sure who our waiter was that night - we had to flag one down for refills on our drinks. The cleanliness also seems to be suffering. The back of the restaurant (which you quickly walk through to use the restroom) smells like an old mop. The bathroom is not great either. I'm also confused about the soup - sometimes we get it for free, even without asking. Other times, we have to ask and we are charged for it. Without Miso, I need another roll so it would be nice to have some consistency. Moby Dick is a gem, but it appears to be getting a bit comfortable because they often have a line out the door. It's not enough to keep me from going back - in fact, I'm ordering take out tonight. read more
