Stopped by Wasabi Zen after going to the Winter Lights in Olney. We wanted sushi and I was pretty glad we chose this spot. My daughter and I walked in and were greeted and seated by the window. They have a lot of options, but be sure to check the paper menu that wrapped up. For some reason we didn't catch that lol. We ordered a few rolls to share. My favorite was the shrimp tempura. It was huge and delicious! Great service and the woman there was very helpful. Parking is kind of tight, but you can always park in the lot on the other sid3 if you can't find parking. It's a small space. But very inviting and good ambiance. I'd definitely recommend checking this place out if you're in the area or want some good sushi. read more

I am updating my review from one star to five stars. We've been coming here for 30 years, ever since they first opened in the mid-90s, I think. In 30 years, the fish has always been fresh and very nicely prepared. Most of the poor reviews regarding this place, including mine, is due to one particular staff member. We've had issues with one particular waitress for a long time (of two regular long-time waitresses for 10-15 years, one is rude, the other is great). I've been getting the sushi to go ever since the pandemic, and we just eat it at home. This past time, which was a Saturday night around 8 PM, I ordered it to go as usual. There was a male who answered the phone which is very unusual, I've never had a male answer the phone before, although I've seen males working behind the bar making the sushi. After ordering, I came by to pick it up. There was only one party (four I think) at one table when I walked in. Very quiet, which is unusual for a Saturday night. My order was ready, and there were no other orders. There was a male at the register. I didn't see any other staff there, although somebody could have been in the back. It was the only time I have been in there in 30 years that I didn't recognize at least one of the staff. I paid for the sushi, left a nice cash tip, and brought the sushi home. It was outstanding in every way. And the rolls were cut through completely, which is important. Often at sushi restaurants, the sushi chef doesn't cut clean through the rolls, which means the individual pieces are stuck to each other at the bottom and you have to use your fingers to tear them apart. They do all the standard rolls and nigiri reasonably well and the fish is fresh. There is little originality or flair here. One of my favorite sushi spots! Whenever I crave sushi and don't want to drive too far, I come to wasabi zen. I don't eat raw fish, so my favorite are california roll and shrimp tempura. After trying many california rolls from different sushi places, the ones here are definitely one of my favorites. The service is great. Everyone is very nice and friendly. Went into here to try it out, been to plenty of sushi places around the area but hadn't done this one yet. The inside is really nicely put together, the service was friendly too. The sushi entrees we ordered were very good, the beef in the bento box was just ok. Also ordered a wasabi zen tower which was literally a small sushi tower and it was worth a try. Tasty For the not so awesome parts, I ordered one sushi lunch special which was "chefs choice" and 3 of the 6 rolls were cucumber rolls I'm sure plenty of people order vegetarian rolls but I was disappointed. Also, every table had a nice looking bottle of hand sanitizer on it which was nice, although when I used it WOW it is a VERY heavily scented product. What a cute little business. The staff more than takes good care of you and answers all questions in a very knowledgeable manner. The food is very tasty along with the speed that service is rendered. Wasabi Zen is the best sushi restaurant in Olney because it is the only sushi restaurant in Olney, unfortunately. The sushi is good, but their customer service is awful and makes it well worth driving just a bit out of town to another spot. This evening I ordered dinner for carry out around 5pm, as it's a Saturday and they often have a long wait time on the weekends. To our surprise, it was going to be ready in 20 minutes. No big deal, we had no problem refrigerating it until we were ready to eat dinner once our baby went to sleep. We unpack the boxes at 7 and notice that one of the rolls is missing. Mistakes happen, but we definitely shouldn't have to pay for a roll that we didn't receive, so I called to explain the situation and requested a refund for the roll. First, I was told that I didn't order the roll that I indicated was missing. I replied that not only did the person taking the order repeat the order back before hanging up, but when I picked up the order they also read out all of the rolls. We definitely ordered the missing roll. Once that case was made, she said I should have called right when I picked it up. I explained why I didn't, as we picked up earlier than we were intending to eat. She said there was nothing that she could do. She then passed the phone to two other people to continue saying the same thing. The final person I spoke with continued to say "we checked the order and it should have been there" ...exactly my point, it should have been there. Again, mistakes happen, but it wasn't there and we paid for a roll that we didn't receive. He continued to state that there was just nothing they could do. The cost of the roll was $7.95. When I initially called I thought it would be a quick whoops, so sorry, no problem, refund. But rather than just refund $7.95, they've lost a customer for good. Skip Wasabi Zen and drive just out of Olney in any direction--there's better sushi with owners and staff that don't assume you're lying and will own up to their mistakes. read more

Service is fine and food came out quickly, but the quality of the sushi has really changed over the years. This used to be my favorite sushi place in the county. I ordered my regulars--the philly roll and honey California roll, and they were sadly small and sloppy. Avocado was only on half of the honey California, which could barely hold itself together. It was also overly sweet and there was barely any crab in it. Gets the job done but I'd love to see Wasabi Zen return to its glory days. read more

I am a fan. Came here for lunch (order carryout) on a whim and the reviews does not lie. They truly over stuff their rolls and the fish is quite fresh. I wish I took a picture of my order as it was very pretty. I ordered sushi lunch special which was 6 maki and 6 nigiri piece. The makis was 3 piece cucumber and 3 piece tuna. The nigiri was an assortment of fishes and one egg nigiri roll. Thinking I wouldn't be full I also ordered the san ni roll, in total it came out to be $24. Just the sushi lunch would have been enough as it comes with a miso soup. Everything right now is carryout only but the owner/hostest was very courteous and prompt. I would imagine if it was dine in their service would be just as good. read more

Ten years ago this was an amazing place for sushi. Sadly, that is no longer the case. My last three visits have been meh at best and pretty darn bad in general. First, the overwhelming smell of fish-gone-bad when you walk in is startling (you get used to it after a few minutes, though). Second - and this has happened the last three times - the yellowtail has come out almost frozen. Not sure what's going on but I think that if I do go back one more time and this happens again, I'm going to have to abandon this place in my sushi rotation. read more

Wife and I tried them for the first time on Friday 6/29/18. I was apprehensive because some of the more recent reviews put me off, about the place going downhill, rude staff etc ... NOTHING could be further from the truth in my experience. We live in Olney and wanted to call an order in for pick up so I stopped by early evening at 5pm to get a menu and to actually see the place in person before ordering ... It was very clean and 2 tables were seated out of about 20 - but it was early evening ... A very polite hostess provided me with a menu and I left. I returned at 7pm - THE PLACE WAS PACKED and very busy (I was relieved). The hostess, with 4 orders ready to pickup behind her - politely informed me that the pickup orders were running over an hour (yes!) - I decided to still give them a shot, so I placed the order and drove the 4 minutes back home. One hour later Wasabi Zen called and said the order was ready. Picked it up, went home. We ordered: (we would order EVERYTHING again, not disappointed about any part of our order) Spicy Tuna Roll ($6.95) - Excellent. Wife loved it - compared to the other rolls we ordered it was smaller but packed a punch. Definitely a go to .. Volcano Roll ($11.95) - eel, avocado, cucumber w crunch etc - again, very good, Spicy California Roll ($4.95) - the largest of the bunch - no complaints, it was good and would order again - Shrimp Tempura Roll ($10.95) - very good - nice sized shrimp. Sushi - Eel ($6.50) - very good, decent size, not huge - IME usually served warm, however this was not, but still good. Japanese Bagel Roll - Salmon, cucumber, scallion, cream cheese - good quality fresh salmon - nice. Wife and I are fans of sushi and rolls - and this place delivered very good sushi. Explore the menu and find what you like, because some things are much much better than others, but that could just be a personal preference. my recommendations are 007 roll as number 1 without a doubt, but also try california yammy roll with the extra crunch and eel nigiri. This place can be slow with service, and almost have that soup place from seinfeld vibe, but you're not going there to make friends and the wait is worth the flavor. This place was honestly a hit-or-miss for me, the 2 times I've ordered here. The first I got regular individual rolls. Yes, very good quality, good portions for their price, food was on time when I went to pick them up. GREAT experience overall. The second time I ordered sashimi platter (for a small get-together) to be delivered at my home. And that was a terrible idea, I should have just picked it up myself. Because my order arrived 30min later than their predicted time. Sure things can go wrong. But when it comes to what really matters... the platter was underwhelming, to say the least. It was small for what was $30, it came somewhat squished together as well. Def not served as appetizers for party of 4. Kinda embarrassing actually. So. Decided to give it a try one day for lunch. It was ok- nothing stellar but not bad. Service was slow, but reasonably friendly. The decor was standard sushi house (if that style name exists- if it doesn't, it should.) I went for the bento box with chicken teriyaki. It was good size portion of food for a reasonable price. But everything was a bit on the bland side to be honest. Especially the chicken teriyaki- it was dry and tasteless. Hands down this is the best sushi in the area. They are the only place I've found that does a cooked salmon roll which my kids devour (two rolls each and they're only 4 and 6). They are flexible, friendly, and great with kids. It's a good thing we live 20 minutes away, as otherwise we'd be there every other day. I have ordered sushi here probably about 5 times since it is really the only sushi spot left in Olney, and after my last experience with the woman who answers the phone for carry out orders I will not be bringing my business here again. I believe this woman may be the owner. I have had issues with her in the past over splitting the bill between 2 credit cards (she would not do it and was simply mean about it), and recently she was so unhelpful and rude when I inquired about how much longer until my food would be ready. Located in a strip mall off the corner of Georgia/Sandy Springs Road (turn right when you see Mattress Warehouse on the corner), Wasabi Zen was just an okay place to grab some sushi. We started off with the salmon and avocado salad. Ummmm definitely skip this! Loaded with tons of wasabi dressing, this salad consisted of iceberg lettuce, a good amount of avocado, and tiny pieces of salmon. What a waste of money. We also ordered several rolls: Japanese bagel roll (fresh salmon, cream cheese, cucumber, and scallions-$6.95), Baltimore roll (cooked salmon, avocado, cucumber, Old Bay-$6.25), tuna roll ($5.25), yellow tail roll ($5.75), and the tuna cheese roll (seared tuna, cream cheese, and cucumber-$6.95). The rice was fluffier than I'm used to, but I have to admit, I liked it. Other than that, I thought the rolls were just okay. Some of them fell apart quickly when you picked them up, which is a huge no no for me. Another thing that I didn't care too much about, was that their was not enough fish in the rolls. Many of the rolls were filled mainly with cream cheese and/or cucumber. My favorite out of all the rolls I tried, hmmm...that's hard to say. I guess it would have to be the Baltimore roll, but I would have liked it better if there was a tad bit less of Old Bay on it (a little too salty for my taste). Our waitress was friendly and refilled our drinks quite frequently. The only thing you do have to remember though is to ask for your check because they won't bring it to you otherwise. Above average prices for the quality of sushi you get. MAYBE I'll be back, but I highly doubt that. read more
