After surviving an absolute dumpster fire of an establishment that shall reman nameless , we stumbled in here still vibrating with rage and wishing we'd just come here first. We grabbed seats at the bar and were immediately rescued by Summer, our bartender and guardian angel, who was stellar from the second we walked in until we rolled out. The vibe is impeccably clean and looks like it actually costs money to maintain. I ordered a lemon drop that was so close to perfection I suspect dark magic was involved. My husband got the Long Bay Beach, which he claimed was equally flawless. I went with the lamb chops, sweet mashed potatoes, and cabbage.......a 10/10 masterpiece I would legally marry if the state allowed it. I'm sad because this really is one of our go to spots as a Jamaican family. We live around the corner and go almost weekly, when it first opened we'd go sometimes two or three times a week and I was close with the staff. Since they renovated, it seems like they're trying to turn it into a club/lounge instead of a family friendly restaurant. Even by the attire of the servers in this strange bustier corsets... Whoa! This restaurant has had a bit of a glow up since we last visited. Seems like it doubled in size and has a whole different vibe, more upscale and party-like. We didn't have any trouble getting a table for two at around 7 pm on a Saturday. I don't know if the A/C was temporarily broken or what, it was a bit warm inside but with a huge fan providing some relief. There appeared to be a DJ in the corner who was setting up while we were there and then up and running as we were leaving... which is good, because it was too loud for us old people. The food was just as good as I remember. Portion sizes are pretty big. This time I had the seafood Mac and cheese and the leftovers will probably last me 2-3 more meals. She asked the server how is something, she gave bare minimum telling ingredients. Even when asked if she had it, nothing. Food was good as I expected. Had the Rasta pasta with salmon. Which I knew was an up charge. For some reason my brain didn't register $18 for salmon. Or maybe I thought this was going to be a hefty size. Anyhoo, a time was had. Bill comes $65. Includes a 18% surcharge. I realize this is becoming a thing along with asking if you'd like to customize the tip. I simply asked about it. And was asked if I'd like to see the menu. That was the final for me. She started off with an extremely dry sit anywhere. No have you been here before. It was the quality of service from her for me. Not dynamic to match everything else. Even though the upcharge was a bit weird to me. I would have had no issue if the server matched. And on the way out, no one said have a great night, or come back soon. The staff moved very slowly and didn't really communicate with customers unless you asked to cancel your order. I always try to support Black-owned businesses, but I also believe service should match the experience. The bill was $140.00, it is a mandatory tip but still coming from the northeast where a large oxtail dinner is $18.50. Don't get me wrong it was good! Cabbage was cooked to perfection, the oxtail fell off the bone, I do wish it had more gravy . The drinks were decent. We got the salmon dip for appetizer and we didn't care for that. Very watery for a dip it was more a vegetable dip... my girl also liked her curry chicken meal. I'd been looking forward to trying Mobay Spice for a while and decided to stop in for lunch recently. The restaurant is fairly "cozy" and has a few high tops outside. I ended up sitting at the bar. The bartender was very attentive. I browsed the menu prior to arriving and knew exactly what I wanted to order. I chose the rum punch for my beverage, mango habanero wings for an appetizer and oxtail with rice and peas for my entree. The rum punch was good and strong. The wings were ok, but I was expecting the flavors to be more bold. The oxtail platter was a generous portion, but lacked flavor and could've been more tender. The rice and peas were bland as well and the cabbage was ok. While I did enjoy my time here, I can't say that I would return because I can't justify the price. This was my second visit to this restaurant, and unfortunately, I was disappointed once again. During my first visit, I had the Jerk Chicken wings, and to my horror, there was still blood in them! Determined to give it another chance, I decided to order the Salmon dip this time. While it was okay, it was incredibly watery. I asked the waiter if this was normal, and she assured me it was. I've passed this place on occasions when they're closed but I had time today and stopped in for lunch. Immediately I walked into a tranquil Caribbean atmosphere with the decor, the music and smell of good food. Not a large place but just the right size for a bar and several tables. I was greeted with a welcome in & told to sit where I want. I chose to sit at the front by the window to get a view of everything. I was on my lunch hour so I opted for the jerk chicken tacos and a side of fried plantain. No cocktail today - just water. I did see other patrons drinking and enjoying their libations. Presentation was excellent and my food came out quickly. The flavors were delicious, a side of jerk sauce for some extra spice and my plantains were served hot out the pan. My husband, daughter, and I just tried Mobay Spice in Toco Hills and we already know we'll be back. Such a cute elevated Jamaican sit-down spot right up the street from us. I ordered my favorite meal of all time, the oxtail, served with cabbage and rice and peas, plus a traditional rum punch. Absolutely delicious. The oxtail was tender, flavorful, and the portions were generous. My husband Davey ordered the jerk chicken tacos with mango salsa and a rum punch. The tacos were technically supposed to be a starter, but they were literally the size of an entrée. They filled him up so much he didn't even need to order anything else. The service was fantastic and the decor was beautiful. They incorporated the colors of the Jamaican flag into the design in such a classy, elevated way without it feeling overdone or tacky. We were escorted to our table and immediately our waitress came over to elevate the experience with politeness and ease. My cousin and I (Jamaican) heritage felt very welcomed. We proceeded to order our entree's. I ordered the jerk pork with white rice and cabbage and my cousin ordered the escovitch snapper. That came with choice of rice and festival. All were good but there is one hang up that made it less than excellent. My cousin is restricting her intake of rice and asked if that could be substituted. The answer was no and if she didn't want the rice she could order and pay for another side. So she decided to keep the rice. It unnerves me when a simple substitution could have been made but as for many Black owned restaurants this is a normal occurrence. It's almost like they force you to eat what you don't want to eat and that is a nuisance. I guess throwing away a full bowl of rice in the wake of a $40 plate and food scarcity is ok in this economy but it doesn't sit well with me. We were pretty full and asked for to go containers which was rather small to fit a whole fish but my cousin made it work. The waitress came back to the table and said oh you're not taking the rice. Well ummm no as my cousin didn't want it in the first place. We thanked her for her service and left. I can say I would go back but I think they could do better on substituting. This was my first time at this venue. It is on the first floor of a strip mall and you won't be able to see it until you are in the parking lot. I sat at the bar. The bartender was great. OK look this is really a five star review but I never gave anybody really five stars but I'm a tell you Mobay spice is amazing. I had the fried fish Esco beach and my daughter had a steam fish. Oh my goodness both dishes were immaculate when they came out the presentation was absolutely beautiful when I bit into the flesh of the fried fish. It was so moist and tender and flaked so beautifully I can't even begin to tell you and the peas and rice. It's as good as when going to Jamaica this this is real Home cooking and I had festival for the first time which is a fried bread. It's a little sweetened and it can be eaten with anything or even paired with the sauce for dessert. I had a Bob Marley, which was a bit too strong for me, but I drank it and my daughter had a Beachbody, which was delicious. I can't recommend this restaurant enough our server Ashanti was so attentive and so very nice. I was very happy. The atmosphere is relaxed and elegant. This is a mid price restaurant, but it does have some higher end meals that could hit your pocketbook a little bit, but it would be well worth it because everything that I've had here so far is top-tier. The portion size is enough to share with at least another person.. We had whole fish so we will be taking fish home to eat gladly, but this is a good place to come for a date or a girls night out even if you're just by yourself. It was Friend Day Out and Mobay Spice was the restaurant of choice. I'm so glad it's in the Toco Hills Plaza as there is ample parking... Upon walking in, the space is very quaint. There is a nice vibe to the overall ambiance and the overall feel is very inviting and pleasant. After taking in the ambiance we headed to the table for 4 as it is a seat yourself type of setup. Though the space isn't wide, they did a great job with positioning the table and chairs to ensure you don't feel crowded. Our waitress greeted us with a warm welcome and menus as soon as we sat down. As I am a lover of Jamaican Food, I was super excited at all the classic offerings and intrigued by such offerings as the Jerk Burger... say whaaaaaaaat! As the waitress arrived back a few moments later, perfect timing I might add I was ready to order. I ordered a Beef Patty as my appetizer and the Jerk Salmon Entree. Furthermore, the jerk sauce wasn't too spicy as it allowed for you to truly enjoy and savor the flavors presented. Rice and Peas - One Word... FRESH!!!! I mean a different level of freshness. The rice tasted like freshly cooked rice. The peas were authentic and perfectly done. The combination of them as one was moutpleasingly outstanding. Again, neither outshined the other. Each of them held their own and they were married together so well. Great flavor and again, amazing freshness. Steamed Cabbage - Ooh Chile! This cabbage was different. I wish that was transparent on the menu because we were surprised at the end, especially that they still ask for more tips in their portable card machine. Went here since our school was highly promoting this establishment at our orientation week.
