Stopped in at 4:00 on New Year's Eve for an early dinner at Mizza. It was 58 degrees outside and chilly. We also had our puppy in tow. I was cold, so I requested the low fire table. This was my second time requesting this table, and my request was denied both times. Even though the restaurant was almost empty, we were told only larger parties can sit there. So, we sat at the same two- top along the wall where we sat a few weeks ago and they lit up 2 space heaters which kept us warm, although without the room and the romantic atmosphere of the fire table. The hostess also offered a dog treat, which was helpful in getting my puppy to position her 60-pound body in the narrow space under my chair and out of the walkway. We ordered the butternut/gorgonzola and the shrimp pesto pizzas on cauliflower crusts. Will definitely order again and next time, request more fried sage leaves on the butternut pizza. Both were delish! We both preferred the butternut pizza. Our server, Xzavier, was fantastic. Friendly, attentive, cheerful, and knowledgeable. Excellent. I would have docked this review to 4 stars because of the ongoing BS about the fire table, but because of Xzavier, I'm still awarding 5 stars to Mizza. Side note: the low fire table I requested sat unoccupied the entire time we were at Mizza. It would have been nice to have been able to sit there, enjoy the warmth and romantic atmosphere, and for my 60-pound puppy to have had space to stretch out, rather than being crammed under my chair at the two-top again. I understand the strategy of saving tables for larger parties, but this was at 4 in the afternoon. Also, when I ate here this fall, there was a couple dining at that same low fire table, just the two of them, during prime dinner hour. read more

My friend and I were in downtown and looking for a dinner spot. We kept walking until we found Mizza. The menu looked decent so we decided to try it out. We sat outside and it was great because there were so many heating lamps everywhere. Grilled octopus (5/5): This was AMAZING. The octopus was on top of hummus accompanied with tomatoes and lettuce. The hummus was nice and creamy. It came with a slice of bread which was a nice addition. Wild mushroom truffle pizza (4/5): I love a mushroom pizza. This was good. I liked that the slices weren't too big. The mushrooms were great. The truffle flavor was very subtle. Almost nonexistent at times. The cheese was a little overpowering but nothing too crazy. Braised short ribs (4/5): The short ribs were so nice and tender. It was a bit too fatty though. The mashed potatoes were nice and creamy. The broccolini was nicely roasted. The sauce was a red wine reduction. This was a great try! I am glad we walked by. The staff was nice and attentive. Found this place through recommendations from people around the area and it was amazing! We would definitely comeback if we are ever doing another trip in Santa Barbara. My boyfriend and I were celebrating our anniversary and the servers were so kind. We were seated immediately and ordered some drinks. I'm not much of a strong alcohol person so I ordered the moscato white wine on the menu and it was phenomenal (if you like sweet white wines)! My boyfriend got an Italian Mule and it was strong but we liked the taste of the mint and ginger. For food, we shared a spicy sausage pizza and added caramelized onions (which was a must). The onions added such a nice flavor to the pizza. We then ordered the wild mushroom risotto and the butternut squash ravioli. Everything tasted divine and we were so happy to share a fantastic meal on our day. For dessert, they offered us a tiramisu to celebrate and it was really the icing on the cake. I was recommended this restaurant by a friend and was not disappointed! The mushroom risotto I had was creamy and well cooked. It was a little over seasoned; perhaps a touch of greens would have helped balance the flavor. I also got to try a salmon dish and the chicken pesto from two friends, and the two were equally good. As soon as I received my mushroom and leek pasta I knew this place was special. I could immediately tell that the pasta is handmade and with its beautiful pale color I am guessing they import their flour from Italy. I live part-time in Barcelona and have traveled quite a bit to different parts of Italy. Our food and drinks were absolutely on par with the best pastas we have enjoyed from Rome to Florence, and to be honest, it was better than any pasta I had on my trip to Milan three weeks ago. When I am back in the states I crave Italian food like no other cuisine in Europe, and I am so very excited to have discovered this restaurant. I cannot speak highly enough about our server Paige. She went above and beyond to make sure my friend's birthday was special and memorable. Truly one of the most amazing servers I've had in a while. Had a great day walking State St in Santa Barbara window shopping and needed to sit and grab something to eat. Pizza and a beer sounded good and we happened to stop in front of Mizza. Ordered a beer and saw grilled octopus on the menu so we ordered the appetizer. The octopus was cooked perfectly and there was a lot of it. Like many SB restaurant that cater primarily to tourists who aren't coming back anyway, Mizza has pretty mediocre food and service. Knowing the tendency of SB restaurants to overcook pasta (Only The Copper and Oilo get it right) I asked 3 times that the pasta not be over cooked - Al dente please. It came so over-cooked you'd need no teeth to eat it. The caprese had no flavor at all. Service was lackadaisical. The capper was the 3.5% credit card fee that was not noticeable on the menu. They said their prices were discounted to make up for the fee. If so, why not drop the fee and put the prices where you need them? It's an insult. read more
