    Temptation and salmon special rolls
    Kaitlin K.

As noted in other reviews, the inside decor is somewhat random and feels like it is in need of a renovation. But being forewarned means you won't be scared away from what is some really good sushi! The Poseidon was incredible. The eel was really delicious and perfectly light and flakey and is what I must eat again. The Cali beach was a little surprising/ disappointing for me- it was a crab and scallop roll but the scallops were the petit kind and because of the fluorescent lighting and the color of the sauces all I could see was vomit when I looked at this. It really kept me from enjoying it. But my partner liked it enough. The temptation was a fun variation of California roll and we enjoyed getting to try a variety of sauces. It's sort of a novelty item so I don't know that I would get it again but if you think of it like a sampler platter it's tasty and fun. The salmon special was mango and lemon and salmon and the mango sauce they use was way too sweet for me, but again my partner liked it. Service is quick and efficient, my water glass was never empty which I love.

This was a simple spot with a mix of classic and fusion dishes. The inside was a little rundown, but it did not matter as the service was friendly and patient while the food came out timely. Four rolls were ordered. Mango Salmon Roll ($8.50) - This was nicely done. The mango sauce was sweet, but not overly done, and went well with the other rolls we ordered. Mission Bay Roll ($18) - This had spicy tuna on the inside, and salmon on top. There was also lemon on top that was not mentioned. It was a pleasant surprise as it complimented the spicy tuna, which was spicier than usual for a sushi roll. Adrian Roll ($18) - This once again had spicy tuna on the inside, but had either snapper, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, or shrimp on top. Again, the spicy tuna was spicier and all seemed fresh. It was another simple roll done right. Mimi Shrimp Tempura Crunchy ($15) - This had shrimp tempura, a tempura shaving with dynamite and sushi sauce. This was alright. The shrimp were nicely fried but came out cold. I thought it would be warmer. The tempura shaving reminded me of the Chinese donuts found at buffets. When the check was put down, oranges were given too. These were fresh and a nice refresher to end the meal. Will I go back? Probably.

Best sushi in Pacific Beach/Mission Beach area! I have been coming here for over a year now, the great service and comfortable atmosphere keeps me coming back. Coming here feels like coming home to me. Also they have gluten free soy sauce!

My family and I were looking for a quick dinner close by and we decided on this sushi place that was right next to the park that my husband and brother picked up their packets for their triathlon race. This restaurant has both Japanese and Korean food which is cool and their portion sizes are huge. Everything tasted good but it wasn't amazing. I got their Seafood Tofu Soup which to my surprise was huge, the biggest tofu soup i've ever had and packed with a lot of things. My husband got their Sesame Chicken Teriyaki which was okay to him. We also ended up sharing the Eel roll which was pretty good and had a lot of rolls for it's price. Overall, good reasonably priced restaurant for Japanese/Korean food that was nearby. Stars: 3.5

Walking distance from Bahia. You can order and it will be ready for pickup by the time you walk over. It was good, and a much better value than the onsite restaurants

This place was amazing! The sushi was fat and delicious, tasted so fresh too! I don't understand why people on here are saying the old lady is mean cause she was so nice and super sweet to us. She accidentally switched our bill and gave us oranges as an apology, it was awesome. If you're in the area, I would definitely recommend! :)

If your family is not into sushi all the other options are absolutely delicious.

The food is always prepared well and is fresh. I order the usual Albacore, Ahi and Yellowtail sushi everywhere I go. It did not disappoint, was fresh well presented and handsomely portioned. The short ribs were tender, the salad was excellent, our daughter had enjoyed the shrimp tempura as she is a picky eater this was a delight. I would highly recommend this place. I was a college kid here 30 years ago and it's nice to be able to afford this on a weekday uncrowded. A must have in Mission Bay if you can make the time. The nigiri was on point! All other menu items are great. We have been coming here every year for vacation and every other impromptu trip.

My first impression of the restaurant was, it was beautiful restaurant with a counter that seats 14. First off, Chef Maru and his entire staff was absolutely fantastic and professional. They were all attentive on refilling water and tea. Chef Maru himself was absolutely awesome, he explained each course that was served. Which was the right way to do it. Omakase: Omakase 20 pieces at $180. It's a great price, but in my head there had to be a catch to it. The starter and appetizer started out strong. Everything (fish) were all fresh, so when the nigiri course started that's when everything went south. The nigiri that chef served was really small and it's not your standard size nigiri .There's barley any shari ( sushi rice) and fish. If felt like I was sampling each nigiri. You can't really enjoy it when it's that small. The only highlight was the Uni from San Diego. That felt like a month full, other than that everything just felt like a tease. Don't let my photos fool you, it was all zoomed in. My wife and I had many omakase before and lelf happy and satisfied. This was the first time that we ever left after an omakase meal and was still hungry and a little disappointed. I would love to give Sushi Maru more stars but I just can't after this vist.

There was no wait here but parking was a nightmare and there is almost no street parking right around the restaurant which is near the trolley tracks. I recalled coming here for a light dinner with my husband many years ago and thinking it was good, but expensive. I asked if they had Japanese soda for my daughter because it was not on the menu, and they said no, but after we came back from the bathroom the host had found one for us. They gave us chopstick helpers and were very nice. We ordered braised pork belly as an app and wagyu nigiri, albacore, hamachi, salmon belly, 2 salmons, and unagi. I think that was all. They nicely split the order so half had no wasabi for the kid. They were very considerate and I appreciated it. The food however took a while to come out. The braised pork belly was ok, but the fat had not rendered as well as at some other places so we ate around it. The flavor was good though. The hamachi was probably the best item-tender and tasty. The albacore was standard and a generous piece, but the salmon was a bit tough and my kid who usually inhales salmon tasted and then left the salmon. The wagyu had good flavor but was surprisingly chewy. For $26 I would expect it to melt in your mouth but it was not easy to bite through. The eel was very tender but had a weird taste, and was disappointing. I found myself chewing on a scale from maybe the salmon and was overall underwhelmed by the food. The bill for a soda and the sushi came to almost $150 after tax and tip for me and a 6-year old. Usually my husband and I and my kid go to places with better quality and pay the same price for the three of us. Will not be back.

We ordered the miso soup, spicy edamame, Den Miso pork belly skewers, tamarindo tuna ceviche, seabass serrano, crispy karikari tuna, and mochi ice cream for dessert. To drink, we had the Taiyo Margarita and the Clouds of Matcha cocktail. The spicy edamame was probably the only dish that fell a little short for us. It wasn't bad by any means, but we were hoping for more flavor. The absolute standout was the Den Miso pork belly skewers. My husband and I both took our first bite at the same time, looked at each other, and immediately said, "Oh!" We were genuinely surprised by how juicy, tender, and flavorful they were. There were only two skewers, but they packed so much flavor that we instantly wanted to order another plate. The tamarindo tuna ceviche was fresh, light, and refreshing. The taro chips added a nice crunch without overpowering the dish. The seabass serrano was enjoyable, though it wasn't a stand out for us. The crispy karikari tuna (spicy tuna over crispy rice) is one of my go-to orders whenever I visit a sushi restaurant, and this version was up to par. The only component I wasn't crazy about was the long, thin slice of avocado on top--I personally could have done without it, though my husband actually liked it, so that's just a matter of preference. We finished the meal with mochi ice cream, which was the perfect sweet ending. Overall, we had a great dining experience.
