This was just okay Chinese food. We tried several dishes including gyozas, pb crispy chicken, chicken lo mein, black pepper beef, and salt and pepper shrimp. The best dishes were the lo mein and s&p shrimp. The lo mein noodles were El dente with a charred flavor from the hot wok. Big white meat chicken chunks. Pretty solid. The shrimp were fried well but had an unusual dry seasoning that was not the usual s&p with fresh chopped chilies. I would not order again the pb crispy chicken or the gyozas. The black pepper beef was just okay. If craving Chinese food in PB, you may want to look beyond PB Oriental. read more

Got take out from this spot last night. It's located right on Garnett Avenue, so decided to go to the restaurant, order there, and wait for the food. The restaurant was empty and we were greeted by someone and able to order right away. The food took about 5 minutes longer than was originally told to us, but they were making a lot of to go orders. The food came to us extremely hot and the first thing we noticed was the value that was given. We spent about $30 on a bowl of Wonton soup and orange chicken entree. The orange chicken also came with a bowl of hot and sour soup, white rice, and an egg roll (not pictured). There was a lot of food that came with our order and we were able to turn it into about four meals. The food itself was less impressive. The only thing I really enjoyed was the wonton soup. It was exactly what I was looking for in taste. The orange chicken was not crispy and had a weird flavor to it. The hot and sour soup was also not impressed and the broth was more of a syrupy texture. The white rice and egg roll were fine, nothing that stood out. However the food is lame, mediocre, bland. Need to get a new chef or at least new recipes. We had house kung pao and shrimp fried rice. Fried rice was ordinary. I guess that's ok. The kung pao had an odd sauce that was distasteful. Yes, I know it is spicy - that part was ok. Compared to, for example, Panda Express or Trader Joe's kung pao sauce flavor, it was disappointing . On previous visits we also got meals with sauces that were ordinary and bland. If you want good Chinese, go elsewhere. Came back because open late and decided to give em another chance. Lukewarm on the flavors for PB Oriental. Not bad, not remarkable. We had orange chicken and vegetables with tofu, which I actually preferred. The orange chicken was too heavily coated and also unexpectedly spicy. Hot and sour soup, egg roll and cream cheese wontons came with our dinner. All were adequate and tasty, just not special. The hot sour soup seemed artificially thickened, giving it an almost slimy texture I didn't particularly like. We will return in our "excellent Chinese food" quest, but mostly because we haven't found a new favorite locally. 3.5 stars read more

Last night we ordered Beef teriyaki with miso soup and A chicken fried rice and small size of hot & sour soup. The beef teriyaki was pretty good. But the fried rice was pretty poor, the rice was kinda wet and they use white meat and I didn't get that "wok hei" (smoky wok) flavor in the rice. I ordered from PB Oriental a couple of weeks ago through one of the delivery services. I tried the shrimp and lobster sauce which was delicious, although it could have used a little more sauce. The mushroom chicken was very good, a bit bland but I enjoyed it. Tonight I thought I would try a couple of other dishes. I ordered the teriyaki chicken and the combination lo mein. I had wondered abou ordering a Japanese type dish but thought I'd give it a try. It was extremely disappointing. It came with a small serving of soup, two cream cheese wontons, a small salad and rice. The wontons were okay not great. The teriyaki chicken was a major disappointment. The chicken was overcooked and tough and the teriyaki sauce was very watery and basically tasteless. I didn't even finish it and decided it just throw the rest away. I certainly would not order the Japanese type dishes from this restaurant again. With the amount of money I spent, I received three free egg rolls. Also a very big disappointment. They were basically tasteless with very mushy vegetables inside. The good news is they were complementary. So all in all I would say some of the dishes at this restaurant are quite enjoyable but that certainly wasn't the case for tonight's meal. After a nice afternoon hike with the family around Mission Bay, found this place nearby. Walked in and tables were empty but uncleared and the person behind the counter seem flustered. After seating ourselves in an uncleared table, (all like that), the waitress came by and cleared it. The waitress did not bring us menus so we had to up to get our own menu While waiting for the waitress to come by and take our orders we saw police pull up in front and arrest a man so it was like a dinner and show! Not sure what that was all about.. Summary of foods we ordered: Cream Cheese Wonton - Okay Salt and pepper fried chicken wings - Tasty Chicken Ramen soup - A bit Salty Shrimp Lo mein - SUPER Salty Orange chicken - Heavily battered and tough Beef Pad Thai - Delicious Wor wonton soup - Yummy The food was served and we had no plates, utensils and napkins and had to ask. Not sure it that was just an off night for service due to it seem like understaffing. Hope the service gets more attentive and salt levels toned down. A good find in the heart of PB right along Garnet. Had seen some signs previously that they were opening soon. Passed by recently looking for something quick, and voila! Lights on and everyone's home! It's a family run joint with the younger generation manning the front and the elders in the kitchen. When I walked in, there was a young man watching a video near the counter and another approaching. The second greeted greeted me as I approached the counter. Since it was my first visit here, I wanted to take a quick but thorough look at the menu. As I did, another customer entered and stiff by at the counter. I offered for him to go ahead, as I mentioned I was still looking at the menu. He said, "I can tell you what you want! Mongolian beef, it's the best!" Since I had given up red meat for lent, I graciously declined, but may end up on my next order. He too wanted to look through the menu as his wife wanted something different since they just ordered the Mongolian beef the other night. The menu has an interesting mix of Japanese and Chinese items. I ended up with a combo that offered an entree (shrimp and veggies), steamed rice, choice of soup (hot and sour), egg roll and fried wontons. My food was prepared quicker than you can say "Sunny San Diego"! Ok, not quite that quick, but pretty darn close. The soup came out first, nice and hot. The entree followed soon after along with a bowl of steamed rice. The shrimp were prepared nicely, not over cooked, still plump yet firm. The veggies were still crisp. My only gripe with the dish was that the sauce the food was prepared in was quite salty. Too salty In fact. Not so much that I'd send it back, but enough that it wasn't 5-star quality. The egg roll and wontons soon followed and added a nice extra crunch to the meal. Overall great service and good food. Will definitely stop in again if in the area and try another dish. Came here for lunch, and was pleasantly surprised! The service was very fast and the staff was so nice. I didn't see a vegetarian option on their lunch menu specials, but they were able to make a veggie and tofu dish for me. The lunch special comes up with an entree, choice of soup and cream cheese wontons. The veggies and tofu were immersed in a flavorful sauce and I was able to adjust my spice level as well. This suite on Garnet Ave has been a failed dessert spot multiple times over so perhaps a Chinese-Japanese restaurant may succeed here? Other than the Panda Express next to Trader Joe's, I don't believe PB has another Chinese take out food place so the need exists for such a business. The dining area can seat 20 customers, but I foresee to-go orders as their bread and butter. It was rather smokey inside from the food being cooked in the kitchen. The owners may want to upgrade the ventilation system as it wasn't necessary for the previous tenants. A 20% discount was currently in effect for the grand opening. I ordered the beef yakisoba and chicken pad thai to take home with me. The portions were large for these noodle dishes. Quality-wise, they were average and what I had expected. The post-tax price of a little over $17 after the discount was applied made the two items a very good deal. Overall, I gave PB Oriental 3.5 stars for my experience. read more

Well, if I'm not as a lover of Thai food I would have been ok with the mediocre food I got but when you're new to the area you just want close places without having to go far. The Honey Walnut Shrimp was not that flavorful at all. There was enough Mayo but that's about it. The portion was decent. The Pad Thai was not like any pad Thai I've tasted. It doesn't have the flavors of a legit pad Thai dish, and to top it off, it has spicy flavor to it when it never said anything on the menu! I was so confused. The steamed rice that came with the dish was SO dry I thought I was having dried rice. :( The Thai tea was decent I suppose.
