Big fan of supporting local surf shops Like Mitch's (as I have for many years) but last time I went they were completely indifferent when I walked in. There were two guys sitting in chairs in the shop watching TV and chatting. One guy looked right at me when I walked in and looked away. The other eventually said hi. Neither asked if I needed any help at all. I needed a new LB fin and a new winter suit. I guess they don't need the business. So I went up to Oceanside where you can still find small REAL local shops that appreciate your business. I've purchased many items here over the years, but never a surfboard. Now I know why. I stopped by the other day because they had a board in stock that interested me. I was greeted by the very friendly front desk staff. However, that was the end of my positive experience. I found the board I was looking for and pulled it from the rack. Out of nowhere appeared a grumpy older man who immediately admonished me for handling the merchandise. I put the board back, apologized, and tried to make a joke to lighten the mood. That didn't work. The scowling continued. What's worse, the old, crotchety thing started badmouthing the board I was looking at. I'm sure neither the store nor the shaper (who is local) would appreciate that. I immediately departed. Surf Ride is 100 yards south and they are always friendly and helpful. Every other shop in town has been a positive experience for me. Plus, Mitch's surfboard stock is ridiculously overpriced. Plenty of other quality surfboards on the rack in other shops....without the extra helping of death stare. There's enough negativity in the world. We don't need any inside a surf shop. I was ready to buy a hard top so I've been checking out the La Jolla location. After renting from there, I decided that I wanted to buy an ellington. The la jolla location didn't have an 8ft in stock but they contacted the solana location which did have it in stock and in a better color. So we drove here to pick it up. They were really kind enough to install the fins, offer 20% discount of items in the store and toss in a bunch of free wax. Thank you to the crew of Mitch's! I love my new surfboard! read more

San Diego's North County boasts some of the best surfing beaches in the nation, therefore we have an avalanche of businesses cashing in on surfers and wannabes alike. Surf shops line the coast highway, the myriad of choices can be daunting. Mitch's is like a secret surfing spot. You could easily drive by this single story wooden building and end up 2 blocks away in a fancy schmancy surf boutique with all of the merchandise that is showcased in this month's surf magazines. Mitch's has more soul and less fashionistas. Catering to real surfers, they sell surfboards, blanks, resin, cloth, leashes, wax, flip flops and apparel. You won't find ornamental surf trinkets here, it is all about function! I have been shopping at Mitch's for decades and the owner, Lorraine is one of the nicest people that you would ever meet. She is truly interested in her clients as well as providing quality equipment at a great price. I did not see her for about 10 years, yet Lorraine still remembered my boys names and made time to ask about the family. Businesses like Mitch's are few and far between, so skip the big box retail and shop at this fine establishment. read more

Was in here the other day when I was shopping for a new board and the employees were weird and rude. Their boards were way overpriced (by like $500-$600) and they wouldn't let me or my brother even take them out of the rack to look at them. Since 1967 Mitch's Surf Shop has been serving the surfing community in a big way. You may not think so as their two locations (one in La Jolla) are very modest indeed. No big signs or fancy display cases, just old-school appeal and great service. They carry the usual, surfboards, wetsuits and accessories. Thier fashion section is a bit weak but it's really all about being in the water here. They do carry Joel Tudor surfboards and they are as sweet as his beautiful and graceful style. Very expensive but his essence is truly in every board. Mitch's also has a selection of used boards that are great for beginners and young surfers. We did our homework before renting gear for the week on my son's spring break. The reviews for Mitch's were spot on. These guys are just great. We rented boards and wetsuits. The gear was quality. They made real sure we were happy. The service is impeccable and consistent with everybody that works there. They answered our questions, addressed our concerns and just exuded that they wanted us having the best time possible. I have found a lot shops can be very condescending, even resentful of desert tourist rats like us. Bravo to Mitch's for treating us with class, respect and just all around cool. Mitch's has high scores for excellent boards made by (insert extremely talented shaper's name here). They aren't a Nordstrom's masked as a surf shop, cough K5 cough. And overall they are a local shop and just have great stuff (wetsuits, etc). So why two stars? I'd rate them higher, but they falter on one quality that I just can't look past. They act like they are doing you a service by letting you in the door. It's the same type of mentality I often see in small vintage guitar shops. They mostly ignore you, but when they do get off their ass to help you, they drill you with questions to essentially "qualify" you to see if you are cool and know what your talking about. I don't need this shit. I'm looking to buy your EXPENSIVE product. Good, friendly service is a must. Even, if I came in wearing goggles, web fingered paddling gloves, and a life vest after "shredding" my 8'0 soft top, you should still treat me with respect and friendliness. Maybe it's just me and my pet peeve or a hyper awareness to this type of thing, but it drives me crazy. And most importantly, makes me never want to give them my money. Which I won't. I say BOO to Mitch's. While they do have a good selection of well shaped, candy colored surfboards, they pack 'em into the display racks like sardines, making it nearly impossible to check them out. i have been to Mitch's many times since moving here, but the last time was hammer that drove in the "i will never spend money there" nail: I went in there ready to drop nice chunk of change on a new board, and when I went to pull one out that I wanted to take a look at, the 2 boards wedged in on either side of it popped out as well, one falling almost to the ground before I was able to soften the blow with my shin. No damage was done to the boards, but I was lucky enough to get a very snarky, "maybe you shouldn't touch $900 surfboards if you don't know how to handle them. [glare] Nice move." and as I tried to apologize, I was belittled. BIG FAT JERK. That's no way to treat a customer. I'm not new to surf shops. i know how to handle ridiculously expensive, well crafted surfboards. Maybe they should put up more than one sign saying, "please ask for help". or better yet maybe they should learn how to display such expensive, fragile items so there is no risk of damage when a potential buyer wants to see one. aside from their attitudes, their women's surf gear selection is weak. if you need wetsuits, rash guards, clothes anything but a board, go to Surf Ride just down the street. If you want a board, go to Craigslist or make the trek up to Mollusk in Venice. Well worth the trip. read more

I would never have gone here if someone at HANSEN'S hadn't told me to go. I wanted to try xcel wetsuits and they sent me to Mitch's. I got there when they opened and two guys were super helpful and sorted through the 3/2's to find the size that fits over my fat a**. They even helped me OUT of the damn over the top/zip front kind that just doesn't work with my middle-aged bod. They had the suit of my dreams in stock and otherwise would have gotten it in a jiffy. They were already on the phone with the La Jolla store checking inventory before we found the one I wanted on the rack. And for *me* their prices were frickin' fantastic. No attitude. Nice. Over the years, we've stopped by Mitch's twice to pick up some local "swag" aka t-shirts to remember our trip to the area. They have a decent selection of t-shirts with their logo on them. Good quality and reasonably priced. However, they are obviously not in the tourist trade because there isn't much else there but surf gear, which I like and respect. I don't want to get tourist junk. Staff is always nice enough and they have a cool, easy to find location. I can't speak to the surfboards or other merchandise. read more

This is for people buying a new longboard. Advice from a local who's lived and surfed in the area for 25+ years. Don't pay these crazy prices for a longboard! The prices are absolutely outrageous. They're charging $1600 for a new longboard. INSANE!! Go to a local shaper directly and you can purchase a new long board for nearly half this price. I'm not going to name the shapers here, but they're easy to locate. If you walk into Mitch's and buy straight off the rack they just took you for $500 - $600. Don't let that happen. If you don't want to locate a local shaper, drive 2 minutes down the road to the Iron Cross shop and you'll find cheaper longboards. I'm not sure who Mitch's is getting to pay these prices. My guess is newbies or tourists. Bottom line, do not pay these prices. read more

I went to Mitch's to get a board I bought on Craigslist fixed. I looked up the guy who shaped my board Brian McInerny without ever meeting him before, called him and he referred me to go to Mitch's. Brian is an international surfer that has been shaping boards for 25 years, when I called him he was out of the country. I went into the shop saying he referred me, and I get this tap on the shoulder and its Brian introducing himself because he heard me using his name. What's the chance in that! Found out my board is about 20 years old and a mini gun, nice. They did $100 worth of repairs which included a bunch of ding repairs and a remounted a fin. I believe it was probably about $150 worth of stuff, maybe more. The people there treated me real well, and it was fun, and to say that when you are spending $100 on repairs to a Craigslist board says something... read more

LOVE this place! After shopping for wetsuits at 5 different surf shops and getting a lot of attitude at some of them, we stopped in at Mitch's and had a great experience. They had some of the better quality suits at great prices. Trying on a lot of wetsuits was a pretty tough experience for my 10-year- old son, but the staff helped him out finding the right fit and style. Thanks Mitch, we'll be back for the board!! read more

I go to Mitch's because they have surfboard repair/shaping supplies. I usually think of them as the 7-11 of surf shops. They usually have it but its well overpriced as compared to other places around(at least 10%-20% higher from what I've seen) . I recently had to ship a board and needed a box quick. Mitch's had em but they charge triple(300%!!) of the other place I usually go to get em. They do have an excellent selection of premium surfboards and I never get hassled when I stop by to check out the selection The staff is knowledgeable and nice to deal with... read more

I've only rented here so I can't speak to anything other than the rental experience. The family and I needed boards and suits so we decided to hit this shop as it was within walking distance to the beach. Very nice people and super helpful. Rented 2 boards and a wet-suit and walked down to the beach (about a 10 minute walk). The convenience factor alone makes this place a good choice if you're renting. We found that other shops along the coast tend to be a quarter mile or more from the beach so it's not real easy to walk carrying a board. The vibe is nice and they are totally cool about answering any questions. Dropping the boards off was easy too. Definitely recommend. read more

This is a real surfer's surf shop. A surf shop the way it should be. They sell everything you need to make a board from scratch. Boards they have in stock are all handmade. The people who work there actually surf and do it well. They don't cater to mass produced b.s., clothing zonies and little fat kids or selling puka shells and frosted tips to texans like Surfride up the street. They're never open when i need them and that's the way i like it. While everything in town is getting manicured, yuppized and paved over they're still the same old run down building. I was born and raised in this town and Mitch's is one of the last few relics left. Anyone who gives it less than five stars is a surf ride kook and should stick to real estate investing and going to the mall. read more

Mitch's is such a bitchin surf shop. They have always been helpful and nice every time I've set foot in there. I recently needed a fin and a bag for my new 10'0" Sal Rite nose rider. Mikey totally set me up with the perfect fin and was super patient with me, explaining what all the different options meant. They had the bag I needed and everything was priced reasonably. Loraine was also helping me and made my day extra rad. I left with my new stick ready to ride happily in a bag and proceeded to go rip, very happy with my purchases and how they treated me. Love it here! Great selection of unusual wave slider machines and a healthy selection of counter culture clothing as well. Think of this shop as the edgy, way cooler distant relative of the uninteresting Patagonia family. Great vibe and long standing support crew. No damn kids working part-time to make mommy and daddy happy. You can even build a surfboard from things you can buy here hidden in the back. I think they call it "foam". Tony, the shop manager taught me how to surf during a tsunami warning and even came to my dogs bar-mitzvah. Additionally, Lorraine (She Who Does Not Age) will always great you with smiles and a cheery high pitched "Hi!!!" outside the human range of hearing. They even have an attack lobster!
