Since 1967 Mitch's Surf Shop has been serving the surfing community in a big way. You may not think so as their two locations (one in La Jolla) are very modest indeed. No big signs or fancy display cases, just old-school appeal and great service. They carry the usual, surfboards, wetsuits and accessories. Thier fashion section is a bit weak but it's really all about being in the water here. They do carry Joel Tudor surfboards and they are as sweet as his beautiful and graceful style. Very expensive but his essence is truly in every board. Mitch's also has a selection of used boards that are great for beginners and young surfers. Cool people work here as well that definitely represent the true soul surfer.

I went to REI, Patagonia, and Arcteryx. Due to supply chain issues (Incorrect sizes) and bad customer service (Arcteryx in La Brea). I decided to try out Fjallraven. I'm glad I did. I ended up in their La Brea shop in Los Angeles. I met Jed at that shop while he was filling in from the San Diego store. The experience was a night and day difference from Arcteryx next door. I got to try on each jacket they had and got educated on the different fits and different materials. It was the experience I needed to decide on a good jacket. Unfortunately, La Brea didn't have much heavier coats in my size. So Jed mentioned that they do have the jacket down at his store in San Diego. So one weekend while I was down there, I was finally able to get my jacket (Expedition Jacket Lite Edition in black). If you are in San Diego, I would highly recommend checking the space out. Nice people and tons of stuff to do while trying out your new jacket.

Although they had two employees and only two customers, my existence was not acknowledged by either worker for over five minutes. (The gentleman at the register made a noise when I asked him about the machine in the front of the store but that was it). I even stood no more than 4 feet away from a female employee while she was talking with a customer and she didn't acknowledge my presence, much less tell me that she could help me in a moment....... it gives me such a terrible taste in my mouth to be treated like dirt in my hometown. But I did go today and spend $200 on a pair of shoes and I'll bring my family of four (including 2 young teens) to a shoe store in Encinitas even though they sell the same product at the same price over 5 miles away...... I really wanted to support local. But clearly the employees don't care about service.

Sasha, the owner was always responsive to any questions or feedback I had. My daughter got stung by a bee during camp and the Nick C, was so calm and handled the situation perfectly. They also played some games with the kids and let them free play in the water and sand when when they wanted. But also encouraged them to surf. Both my kids were able to surf , by day two. I have a daughter and a son an both loved this camp. Ages 7 and 9. The only thing I would say is camp is actually over at 1:45 not 2, but that was so minor I didn't even mention it to Sasha. He's very patient, friendly & knowledgeable.  After providing my daughter with a wet suit & surfboard, Jacob started the lesson on the beach by going over proper mechanics & safety.  After 10 mins on the beach, into the water they went. My daughter is a beginner surfer, with no prior surf experience.  Jacob developed an instant rapport with her that made her feel confident in the water.  Watching the entire lesson, I could see Jacob has a ton of teaching experience. His teacher modeling strategy is to demonstrate surf techniques that a student then attempts to mirror & repeat.   His communication skills are so engaging & effective that our class started at 11:15, and by noon, my daughter was standing on a surfboard for the first time, catching waves!   She was absolutely over the moon with the experience :) For 100% transparency, I'm not affiliated with this company & wasn't paid or received any discounts for this review.  My daughter had zero surf experience before the class, and we're both overjoyed with the quality of instruction & that she learned to surf so quickly in a safe environment.
