Seriously the veggie Brekkie sandwich was so amazing. I think it's the best breakfast sandwich I've had in San Diego and I absolutely love that watermelon comes with all the breakfast items. Perfect breakfast after a yoga class at riffs :) read more

This place is awesome. The staff were so nice to us. We had no business being anywhere near this place and they could tell. Zero judgements and they made us feel at home. The selection is amazing. This place is much bigger than it appears from the outside and they make good use of the space. All the tourist gear appears to be good quaintly but the board shorts and hats are the reason you come here. Excellent spot. read more

The guys at Bird Rock Surf are just overall great! I don't know anything about surfing, but they were so patient to answer my questions, which was so helpful that I ended up buying my wetsuit from them. Planning to go back to buy my surfboard from them after taking a few lessons first. Bird Rock Surf carries so much -- surfboards, wax, etc. to swimwear and wetsuits to casual clothing to flip flops/bags/dresses. Such variety! I love this place! read more

I've purchased a few things here over the last 5 years, and only once did I receive good customer service. I went in recently to look for a new pair of Olukai sandals, and won't be coming back, EVER. I have given them a pass the last few times but decided I don't need to spend my money where it's not appreciated. I'm never greeted by anyone, asked if I need help, and basically ignored. I'll stick to Mitch's. A true La Jolla icon. Always great service.. read more

Had my kid go in with gift certificates from the surf contest to buy a present and was denied because the expiration was Dec. 1st. You couldn't even see that because it was tiny. I called and asked if they would honor them and the manager said no. He tried to use on the 22 of Dec. That's LAME!! read more

I stopped by Bird Rock Surf shop because they had a sign that they were having a wet suit sale. Not that I'm about to go into a surfing craze but a sale is always worth looking at! The staff was friendly and in this type of boutique shop, it was nice to be asked if we needed help and not bombarded every 4 minutes after despite not having many other customers in the store at that time. They had a huge variety of wet suits many of them great priced for wet suits (although I really did not need one ...) and they also had a good selection of surf boards as the name would indicate. They had a huge rack of flip flops but some were pretty awesome looking with an awesome price tag attached (think $56 for a pair that's not rainbows!) ... but otherwise their Bird Rock shop clothing (sweaters etc.) were pretty good quality and very warm ... I was tempted to buy one since I had on a dress for a day that became inappropriately cold :( Interesting browse but definitely a great location for all your surfing needs. read more

We stopped into Bird Rock Surf Shop when we were looking for board shorts and flip flops for my husband. I was planning on sitting outside with our dog, but he was actually allowed inside the store. That was nice as that allowed me to peruse around the store as well. The store is very big and seems to have a very good selection of flip flops and board shorts. They have a lot of other items, but we weren't looking for anything else so I didn't pay attention to any of the other items. We found what we were looking for and the prices are comparable (if not better) than other surf shops. The staff was very friendly and the owner's golden retriever was also friendly even to our over-excited puppy. read more

Walked in 10 mins to closing and needing wetsuits, the staff was very welcoming and personable. Wetsuits take a lot of effort to get on and the staff were patient and accommodating with 3 of us trying them on. Even unperturbed with us leaving 20 mins after closing. Very pleased with the end price/products and staff! Will buy from this local shop in the future. read more

I like to come here because I am always greeted with a friendly smile like we're all homies, even though we totally aren't cause I don't know anybody here, but I feel like I do when I walk in! Really good customer service, good selection of new and used boards (they run specials sometimes too, like $50 or $100 credit depending on which used board you buy). And good selection of clothes and sunglasses and art if you aren't in the market for a board today. I bought my soft rack for my car here cause these people are so friendly and the cutie that rang me up offered to come out to my car and show me how to set them up correctly. I'm sure I could have figured it out myself but I let him be a man and show me anyway. :) read more

Just received a note from someone at the shop who was bummed that I was bummed. Unfortunately, the rack is not in our possession, but this person did offer to make everything right by us, and that goes along way. Maybe the employee didn't know the rack had been used. Or maybe they didn't care... even places that I give 5 stars to occasionally hire a bad egg. Based on this, I'd give them another shot. read more

Been to several surf shops in town, and Bird Rock stands out as my favorite. The staff is friendly and always has good recommendations. The store itself is spacious and well organized, and the golden retriever is super chill if you have some time for our furry friends. On top of solid service, good location and size, the price point is just right. My last trip there was for a spring water temp solution, as I only had either a full suit or board shorts. I asked one of the staff what he recommended and he showed me a long john suit for the freedom it gives to the arms while keeping the legs warm. I ended up getting a vest to wear with my board shorts because I'm optimistic, but I might be back to get those long johns if warmer waters don't arrive. Always a good experience there, don't hesitate to check it out even if you don't surf. read more

Having moved to San Diego only a couple of years ago, I'd gotten used to being vibed at surf shops by the kids working behind the counter. It always struck me as shortsighted. I assume the surf shop industry is a tough one to succeed in, so why would you willingly be rude, unhelpful or simply indifferent to the people who come in wanting to spend money? I don't get it. Fortunately, the guys at Bird Rock Surf Shop get it. They're friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. They have a ton of new and used boards, a great clothing selection, and they truly appreciate their customers. I've gotten to know the owners over the last couple of years and they're simply a couple of hard working, honest guys who happen to also love surfing and who want to help others enjoy it, too. I like supporting businesses like that. Grab a coffee at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters or a fish taco at Bahia Don Bravo's and go check this place out. It's a diamond in the rough. read more

This is my favorite surf shop in San Diego. The staff is very helpful and friendly. They all have experience surfing the area, for many years, so they know what they're talking about. The atmosphere is really chill. I bought a board from them back in September, one of their own shapes (Surf Through Life). I had been looking for a long time to find a short board shape I liked. I told them what types of waves I wanted to ride, how I wanted to ride the waves, etc, and they pointed me to the board I ended up buying. I've been surfing this board since then, and I absolutely love the board. They hooked me up with a great deal, and the entire package (board + fins + leash + stomp pad) cost less than a Channel Islands or Rusty board by itself. I would recommend them for their expertise in knowing the local waves, the quality of their repairs (got a ding repaired here on another board), and their overall helpfulness/friendliness. read more

I have come in a handful of times and each time the service has been great. They let me try out a used surfboard that I was interested in. I really liked it and came back a week later to buy it. Nicole helped me today and she was very nice and courteous. They have a good selection of new and used boards. I will definitely be back for future purchases. read more

I brought my surfboard in for an easy repair nob here, I was initially quoted a price of $60, which seemed like a lot but I agreed since the shop is close to where I live and I want to keep my business local, it took them 2 weeks to finish the job after they initially quoted 5 days, then when I got there the chick who checked me out tells me it's now $70. Way too much for the repair, definitely a ripoff, I will take my repairs anywhere but here read more

When my husband and I moved to Bird Rock about 6 years ago we could see it was lacking something that most smaller beach communities have a lot of, we were without a local surf shop. Yeah, I know, there's Mitch's Surf Shop near the Village. But Bird Rock was without it's 'own' neighborhood surf shop. Thanks to the Murphy brothers, now we have one, it's Bird Rock Surf Shop. It opened at least a year and a half ago in a different location than where it currently sits. I'm sorry to say that I never ever even walked in to the place until today. My bad. Their old location didn't have any parking so I always just drove on by because parking is a bitch around these parts. The new location has a large parking lot in the back of their store so it's super easy to cruise in and check some stuff out. They have a good selection of boards and they even have a shaping room where you can watch your very own custom board being shaped! And of course, there are tons of clothes for the man (or woman) in your life. I picked up a cozy fleece-y sweatshirt with BRSS's logo on the back for a incredibly low $25 bucks! Shazam. I was the wife of the week when I brought that home for my hard workin' man. (yep, I'm a good wife) So, to the boys at BRSS: I am sorry it took me so long to get my ass in to your store. Thank you for moving to a new larger location with plenty of parking. Thanks for opening your store in the 'hood. I promise I will do my best to support you. xoxo read more

I wanted to get a wetstuit for the first time and was guided by the friendly and chill staff on what the differences were between a 4/3 (4mm torso/3mm limbs, better mobility for cool water) and a 5/3 (more core warmth for colder water, slightly stiffer) wetsuit. The prices here are definitely on the pricier side ($200-500), but I was able to get a good 5/3 wetsuit deal for about 120$. I'm excited to try it out. Fittings rooms are reasonable size. I felt like a seal when I was able to fully try one on. Lots of great selections to look at!!! My girlfriend wanted to get a bikini on the sale, but lots of the tops and bottoms were missing each other counterparts.

And just hanging out for the mornings with the kids and surf friends. Teachers did a morning stretch and then got them out on the water. My son was catching waves right away. Mid-day they had snack break and made sure to reapply sunscreen. Last day they had a pizza party at the surf shack for all the girls and boys. I've watched him make several of my boards, and it was a really cool experience. Tim has been shaping for a very long long time, and is on of San Diego's most expereinced shapers. Many famous surfers have ridden his boards over the years, as well as just about every local who knows a quality board when they see it. He has made me many great shortboards over the years, as well as the occasional "funboard" and "fish". His boards are definitely not the cheapest in town, but quality doesn't come cheap. If you want a unique board, Tim is the man to see!
