In a pinch, I visited this shop twice in a week while on vacay. Let me start by saying I've been a Big 5 customer longer than Taylor Swift has been alive. But I have never shopped at this Big 5 in Solano Beach. So glad that this particular shop exists in Solano Beach. It is conveniently located in a readily accessible shopping center near I5 and the north coast highway. Fletcher Cove beach is nearby. So if you forgot beach toys, swimwear, beach chair, etc...remember they are nearby. We bought a pair of sunglasses and a boogie board, all on sale 50% off. Like all Big 5s, this shop packs a lot of inventory in its shops. The customer service was great. The fella assisting us with the sunglasses was very patient and helpful. Other staff was helpful by checking stock and guiding us to the right aisles for various other items. read more

If you're in a pinch and desperately need a piece of clothing or equipment, check it out, but don't expect to find a specialty piece of sports equipment - it's a crapshoot! It's just not that big of a place, and there are only two or three employees - they probably won't be around to help you when you need them (if you can even find them). I come here pretty often (actually they have decent sales), and I only see one or two other customers at any given time, so I don't know how they stay in business. I'm glad they do, since it's the only sporting goods store around! They do always have swim and ski equipment and just a little bit of everything pretty much all the time, which is nice. Just be ready for slim pickin's and iffy customer service if you know what I mean. read more

If I could give the store a lower rating I would. Very poor customer service. I've purchased a lot of expensive home gym equipment at this store and was told, "No problem, if the equipment is defective, you can return it for a full refund. Ironically, the least expensive piece of equipment failed and was defective--the band snapped. And Big 5 wouldn't refund the &20 faulty product. "I purchased a fitness product; within 30 days it was defective. The rubber bands snapped. When I talked with the store manager, she wouldn't refund my money despite my having a receipt. It's a shame that some Brands don't get it. All they have to do is send the product back showing it's defective refunding my money, would have proved that they are a brand that stands behind the product they sell. Lesson learned, I'll shop at Amazon. read more

I love this place. I've bought about 10 pairs of shoes from this location alone and save a lot of money at the same time. I recently injured my foot training to hard at the gym and on the tennis court. So today i went shopping at Roadrunner shoes in convoy(specialty running shoe store). They are experts in shoes and actually taught me a lot. Mostly that I have mistakenly been wearing size 11's when I should have been wearing 10 EE's. So the shoes they show me are between $126 and $140 a pair. For running shoes? So I went to Big 5 and spoke with Spenser. Spenser was just as knowledgeable as the running shoe guys. He explained to me what the difference between the numbers of the different models of shoes were for(lighter support, stability, heavier people, etc...). I walked out with 2 pairs of awesome shoes and 3 pairs of socks for under $100. Score! Plus, if you're on a budget, Big 5 has all kinds of weekly specials for close to $20 a pair. Not to mention they have a full selection sporting goods store. read more

This place sucks royally. My wife and I went in today to find some proper workout clothes. Their selection was laughable, so much so that our sashay took long 2 minutes. The selection here is iffy (they don't sell tennis shoes for kids at all & only a couple pairs for adults or carry most of the major brands), but this might just be because it's a small store. It is, however, a great place for more generic items for both camping to sports at more reasonable prices than Sports Chalet or Sports Authority. The guys in the shoe department are pretty knowledgeable as well. I would also recommend this a place for kids' shoes. Need hiking boots for camp or cross trainers? They have several options and it seems like every time I need something half of my choices are on sale or clearance. Can't beat that. read more

Completely surprised by the excellent customer service I received here. I was interested in a jacket, but there was not one in the size I wanted. A store employee looked up stores where it could be found and then called the closest store and had it put on hold for me. He then wrote down and provided me with the address and phone number of the store where the jacket was being held. I felt completely looked after in trying to make a purchase. I discovered after picking up the jacket and a few other things at the other store that this excellent customer service is something that must be trained in and emphasized by the company. I love this shop, but its the third time I just choose my items, bring to the cashier ( always young people) and realize after I double checked the price they charge me more of the real original price, I don't know why its happen to me several times, so always after I ask to re-check the items price they return me on cash the difference amount of money but this is kinda weird, I don't like to go in a place and just scare all the time they charge me more than the original price try to figure out a better cashier good on math! read more

I purchased a tennis racket for $70 about a week ago which I found vibrates terribly. Big 5 would not agree to a refund or exchange. The racket hurts my elbow and is therefore useless.
