Always wanted to try surfing but don't know a thing about it start here. We were in town from Texas and my 12 yr old son decided last minute he wanted to try surfing and most experience we've had was tubing on the lake. Colin was our instructor, also my son's name, and his energy and communication with my son was perfection! My son has a condition that impacts his coordination but Colin was so patient with him and got just as excited if not more as my son excelled. Colin helped create a memory we will never forget. I was referred to this place for surf lessons and board/wet suit rentals by two different friends in san diego. i'm so glad i took their advice! brent the owner is super fun and really nice. his wife and daughter were at the shop in addition to tons of kids who surf, skate, etc. making me feel that this place is super special to the locals in encinitas and a small business that's growing and thriving. my cousin and i stopped in for 1 lesson at first, and were paired up with steven and ryan, two awesome instructors. we had such a blast, both of us able to get up and ride tons of waves. we ended up scheduling another lesson the next morning and brent gave us a discount for multiple lessons plus free board rental the rest of the day and discounted rentals for the rest of our trip. what's awesome about this shop is brent has a TON of high quality boards of all shapes and sizes, and he's very open to letting his students try out any of them. if you don't own a board, you should come here to figure out what suits you. he's super knowledgeable. i'd definitely recommend this place. it's a quick 2 block walk to moonlight beach, and very accessible. they also have cruiser rentals available. love this shop! read more

It was starting to become frustrating when I was looking for a place to rent bikes. Lots of places popped up in my searches but their websites mentioned everything except bike rentals. Finally found Concept. I called and talked to Brent who was very accommodating and helpful. When we showed up late in the afternoon and I mentioned their 2 for 1 yelp deal he even gave us a little better discount because of the time of day. I didn't ask he just offered. The bikes were almost brand new and we had a great time. When we returned our bikes there were people who were renting surfboards. I was very impressed with the service they received choosing the right stick for their skill level and the current conditions. My 9 year old daughter just completed a week long surf camp and absolutely loved it. All of the instructors were awesome but Brian really stood out. He was so attentive to the kids, making sure they felt seen in the water even with over 15 kids out there at once. Surf lessons? Look no farther. This is the place! I inquired about surf lessons via the website. Brent was very responsive and we set up the lessons for my three teenage boys. On the first day, there was a bit of confusion about where to meet other then that small snafu everything was seamless. The staff at the beach teaching other lesson for the younger kids were polite, helpful and knowledgable. These are the words three teenage boys used to describe the instructor: patient, personable, nice and a really good teacher. My recommendation is to do two days back to back. The boys were up surfing the first day and the second day they refined their skills. These Colorado boys are now comfortable surfing. read more

We were searching for a place to rent cruisers along the coast and other places we had gone to wanted $60 per bike AND a $1000 deposit. Don't think so. I love this place! The owner (Matisse) is an incredible little fluffy dog, who owns Brent (the lovely guy at the front desk!). The location is amazing, and the vibe is always positive. The bikes are all brand-spanking new, and the staff takes great care to take care of them to ensure everything runs smoothly for the people who ride them. I don't know too much about surf boards, but even as a novice, I can tell they have great variety and great quality. They have every size and shape to accomodate anyone's surfing ability/preference. On a trip down to San Diego for a wedding, I was determined to fit in my very first surf lesson. Brent totally hooked it up! I had called several other places well in advance and was finding everything booked (I guess this was the busiest week of the year for all the surf camps). Anyway, Brent fit us in for a private lesson for me and my husband. We found the shop easily, checked in, and our surf instructor, Brandon, came up from the beach to meet us and walk us to their set-up on the beach. We got quickly situated in our wetsuits, had a quick on-the-beach overview of the basic mechanics and set off into the waves. Brandon was awesome! With his help, I was able to stand up on probably my third or fourth attempt. My husband picked it up pretty quick and was able to keep going on his own, while I got the attention and tips I needed from the instructor. Overall, an amazing experience. I have not stopped talking about it since I returned to the Bay Area. I would highly recommend trying surfing and especially this establishment to anyone! Great experience! My 6 year old daughter wanted to learn how to surf and requested that a female surf instructor teach her. Concepts paired my daughter up with an amazing surf instructor and she helped build her confidence to get out on the surf. My daughter has gone back to Concepts for a few more lessons and now my daughter and I go out weekly together. She is standing up and riding the soup all day long. The Instructors are great here and you get a wetsuit too. When I was new, James pushed my board across the wave and when I stood up, the feeling was like surfing across glass! The heavens open up, you hear the surf music, (like from the videos) and it's a surreal experience each time. I learn something every time I take a lesson here. The demo board collection at this shop is stacked bro they have a great selection. I rented Kelly Slater's Firewire Tomo Board and it was a ton of fun. We love Concept! We have used them for lessons each summer for at least the last 3 years. The owner Brent, Emily, and the entire staff are very friendly and helpful. (They also have cute little friendly dogs that hang out at the shop.) The instructors are really nice and knowledgeable (we have had lessons with Karch, Shane, and Greyson). They are great at teaching to your highest potential and customizing the lesson to you (our daughter started as a beginner and is now learning more advanced skills). I also took a lesson this year and loved it! We will continue to come back to Concept each year because of the amazing instructors and wonderful customer service!
