In my opinion, what makes a great clothing store is two things, great service and really great well-made products. Encinitas surfboards is a legend down here, and I love their long sleeve tees and their sweatshirts. I bought my long sleeve tee right around Christmas and last week I saw a whole bunch of threads coming out of the bottom of the tee. So I walked in today showed him what it happened to the T-shirt and without a blink he said you're on the same color? I said sure really? He said yeah I grabbed it and left. Best place to get honest advice on surf gear.. They pack a lot into their shop from coolest of Encinitas gear, locally made surf boards, needed clothing, and accessories, and anything surf related. Great place to buy wax since they sell at basically cost so awesome value. They'll even help you with that gear like surf racks, getting a board ready to ride, and more. My favorite local shop. Super friendly and helpful staff, great selection of gear and good prices. When I lost an FCS 2 fin that just popped out of my board when I was shredding the gnar, I was able to buy a single replacement fin here without having to buy the whole box set. Other shops like the big one in town claimed that they could only sell me a very expensive set of fins, while Encinitas Surfboards keeps it real and helps out surfers without trying to milk every last dime out of them. read more

Encinitas Surfboards has been around for as long as I can remember I think they opened up a couple years after I graduated high school. I do know they have always had a wonderful selection of core surfboards. And you can't go wrong purchasing any of their surfing and Boogie Board accessories. I bought my first surfboard cover from them and it lasted a long time. I've also bought at least three different boogie board bags from them and the last one I bought there lasted over 10 years. I love their selection of clothing it seems a little cramped and crowded but I think that's what gives it the flavor of being an old school California surf shop. Their t-shirt selection is awesome as well as all of their different hats and apparel. Don't forget to get some wax while you're there they've got a great selection and they've also got a great selection of lotions and creams. This especially goes for the girl that was working last Friday. Please change your entitled attitude, instead of trying to be cool because your family probably owns the shop, try smiling and thanking your customers who are buying your high priced items. I would give zero stars if I could. These guys are rude and store policies are terrible. Crazy high prices and no recourse if you're items end up being defective. Owner is not a nice person and this trickles down through the straff. Someone should tell these guys they work in customer service. I'm glad I checked this place out a few years ago because it's now one of my favorite surf shops. They're right next to my normal spots in Leucadia, they've got really nice prices, the place is funky and cool, and the people are super friendly. I've found their prices are WAY better than Hanson's and the selection isn't that much smaller. Sure Hanson's is freaking huge, but there's so much in that shop that you never want it doesn't really matter. Encinitas Surfboards has the meat and potatoes of what you really want, not the weirdo veggie that you can't identify. Two of my last experiences that weren't surf wax related were for flip flops. They've got a basic selection, but I find their prices to be pretty much as good as their going to get. Keep up the good work guys! Extra points for being right next to Bull Taco. read more

My annual surf pilgrimage resulted in yet another vision of heaven in a surf shop and I came out with more than I came in with. And that's great news for any surf shop trying to compete with the likes of mega-stores such as Surf Ride just down the street. Keeping it local and personal is a trait that I hope continues to support the mom & pop surf industries and keep the "corporate commandos" at bay. I was driving down to San Diego when I decided I would exit the 5 freeway at Encinitas Blvd and backtrack to a Starbucks that I had just passed. I am a firm believer that some of your best adventures occur during the journey not planned. As I was attempting to backtrack I was stoked when I came across Encinitas Surfboards. I am firm believer that local surf shops are a dying breed and we surfers need to do our part to ensure they keep their doors open for the future generations of surfers to come. If you are looking for this surf shop it is only a short distance from the 5 freeway right off of Encinitas Blvd @ N. Coast Highway 101. There is a parking lot directly in front of Encinitas Surfboards. If that parking is full there is an adjacent lot which has plenty of spaces. As I walked in the door I was stoked to find an 'Old School' surf shop where all of the workers working were talking about the swell that morning. Everyone had smiles on their faces that only surfers know. The surf shop itself was stocked with everything a surfer might need. You could walk in these doors and pick up all sorts of clothing, surfboards, skateboards, hats, stickers, wax, skating helmets, backpacks and so much more. I figured since I was here I would 'check-in' via Yelp on my Iphone and I am glad I did. Upon checking in I was awarded with a Yelp reward of 'buy one' get one 'free' for t-shirts. This was one heck of an offer because the t-shirts were not marked up. The t-shirts were $20 and with just a simple 'check-in' I was able to purchased two t-shirts for the price of one. I confirmed this with the cashier who confirmed that the offer was still valid. The cashier even told me that not many people fail to capitalize on that offer and even suggested they are missing out by not using 'Yelp' I have to agree=) I selected a couple of shirts and tried them on the change rooms this shop has in the back. I dug the inside of the change booths, the walls were covered in old school surfing posters from surfing spots local to the area from back in the 1960's. Before I left I walked around and checked out the boards and everything else this shop had to offer the surfing community. I am so stoked that I came across this spot and without question I will be back. I am working on a little art project and was stoked to see the huge collection of surfing stickers this shop had. This shop had a booklet filled with surfing stickers and I truly came across some gems. No matter what surfing shop you visit you should always buy a sticker. Stickers to surfing shops are decribed in one word 'profit, profit, profit' and independent surf shops need those profits to keep their doors open. Remember as a surfer you are an ambassador of the Oceans and the those who call the Ocean / Beach home depend upon you to be their voice, so remember, Be the Good, always!!! Next time you go to the beach remember as s surfer you always have one free arm when carrying your surfboard. So to and from the water pickup any and all garbage you see. Encinitas Surfboards is probably one of the oldest surf shops in North County Coastal. It opened its doors back in 1975 when two surfing buddies, Mark and John decided to venture into business. John Kies at the time was a blossoming longboard shaper. Over time he was able to make the transition into shaping boards for every type of surfer. His fish shapes are great and chances are you will see at least one person in the water on his board. Even if you don't surf you'll want to get one of the their sweatshirts featuring the logo along the sleeves as they may at least allow you to feel like a surfer. I have been a customer the whole 34 years I have lived here and make multiple purchases every year. Was going to buy a sweatshirt and sweatpants matching. The sweatpants were labeled 29.99. At checkout they tried to charge 10$ more for the sweatpants because they forgot to change the price since they got new ones in with pockets.( they had not changed the label In The months)since they got the new ones in. People at counter refused to give them to Me at advertised price they tried to cut the difference and charge 35.99 4$ cheaper than 39. I don't understand why they would sell them for 35 instead of 39 why not 29, it's not that big of a difference. So I opted to buy nothing. As I have been a lifelong customer. Any customer service positions I have been in, if we had something mislabeled unless it was outrageous we would give them the price it was advertised. I felt really unimportant as a customer. I was spending 100$ and my mother was buying things too. It was too much to eat 10$ for them. They would have got the sale. But customer service is not important to them. They would rather lose a sale then eat 5$. Have never left a bad reveiw. It this was just ridiculous. Thanks enc surfboards. Gues I won't be shopping here ever again. And I have family from Here out of town and I buy gifts from here every year. Have never received service like that there. I do not support businesses that treat lifelong customers like that. I will not purchase anymore Encinitas surf gear. Thanks for making me feel like never shopping or spending my hard earned money here again. Would leave zero stars but not an option. I just would have expected better treatment. Any other business would have sold it at the advertised price. Extremely helpful and grateful for my business even though it was obvious that their shop isn't in any way desperate for customers. Priced reasonably and smart color choices available, I left with a very warm zip up in an electric blue color that ma whife makes fun of, but that's because she is a nerd. My first time stopping here and I don't even live in the area. Great customer service even though they didn't have the fins I was looking for. Good variety of surfboards of all shapes and sizes and related gear. Great location on the 101, but weird footprint as it's in a narrow building that was once shared with a Jamaican restaurant, which is now Bull Tacos. Luckily they have their own parking lot separate from Bull Tacos. Next time I stop by I'll probably pick up an Encinitas Surfboards hat at least! read more

Encinitas Surfboards reminds me of the shops I used to visit in Santa Cruz when I was a kid. Mix equal parts old school soul surfers from back in the day, a great selection of new and used longboards, shortboards and hybrids, an incredibly helpful staff, excessive amounts of Reggae music and enough t-shirts and shorts to keep you stocked through the summer and you've got yourself a great surf shop. I rolled in this afternoon having decided that today was the day I was ready to plunk down some Benjamins and get back into surfing. I did my research, decided on a 'Big-Guy Tri,' a 7' 4" or larger tri-fin pintail or squash tail that had plenty of rocker, thick rails and provided good flotation. Robbie at Encinitas showed me three boards that I might be interested in and then broke down why I would want one over another. He was totally helpful, patient and knowledgeable. I ended up choosing a used 8' 0" board by local underground board shaper John Bland. Robbie even knocked $50.00 off the price and threw in a locally made Crow Haley leash and a few bars of surf wax. I also purchased a new O'Neill Heat wetsuit, which was kind of crazy since I used to work at O'Neill Surf Shop in Santa Cruz during high school. I used to sell these wetsuits! Wetsuits have come a long way in *cough* the *insert-astronomical-double-digit-number-here* years since I last surfed. I went straight to beach afterward, waxed up my new board, put on my suit, jumped into the water and proceeded to get my ass kicked royally by wave after wave after wave. Punished really. I'm sitting here penning this review with sliced up feet from the reef and really sore muscles from paddling. It might take me a 'few' more sessions to get back to where I was. I've been coming here for a while, and today I had it. The employees need to understand, your attitude is NOT cool. I was interrupted 4 times while trying to ask a simple question about Solarez. The employee was chatting it up with another local about surfing, which would normally be OK, but he barely acknowledged my existence. OK, you got my $16 for solar-rez, but I know a much better place to shop for boards. It's a shame, I honestly tried to use/like this place, but I can't take the vibe anymore. And I'm a local surfer. There ARE other cool employees there, and I don't want to misrepresent them, but I'll give my money to another shop that will treat me respectfully, not like an annoying customer. Encinitas Surfboards was once one of the more core surf shops in the county. It used to be you could go in there and talk story with one of the owners, including North County shaping staple John Kies. Unfortunately, the core score has suffered in recent years. I bought a used board for $200+ there and I asked for the customary free bar of wax that surf shops have given with most decent purchases since Duke Kahanamoku's time and I got a talking-to by the younger-than-me clerk. He tsk-tsked me, then added, "If we gave away wax to everyone, we'd be out of business". Thanks for the econ lesson, bub! A few months later I had some time to kill between appointments and went in there and overheard a young lady talking to one of the male employees about her recent sexual escapades, which is why I'm giving it a bump from three to four stars. First off I'd like to start out by saying that I use to work here. Both Marc and John are good guys. This is the type of surf shop you want to go to when you don't want your surfboard made by a computer.    They have a good verity of stuff for guys and gals. If there is something that you may want and don't see just ask Marc and will try to find away to get it for you. John Kies shapes the boards and is in the shop I think still one day a week if you have any questions for the man himself.  They are both very helpful and stand up guys.    Encinitas Surfboards has been around since 1975 and they are still kicking ass! If asked I would highly recommend Encinitas Surfboards to anyone. Stop in even if it's for something as simple as a bar of wax, these to guys are great. read more

Not a fan of these guys. When you read other surf shop reviews and they say other shops treat you like a retard...well they are talking about this shop. Really a shame because this shop has been around at least since the early 1990's and they used to be pretty friendly as I recall. I hate to go to big surf shops but Leucadia Surf Shop went out of business, Progression isn't paying their Consignment Sales money out.....and these guys have a stinky attitude problem...... I guess the answer is have a local shaperscustom make your boards, go to San Clemente Trestles Outlet for clothes and sell your old boards on Craigslist. read more
