Never tried SUP and it looked like fun... my daughter and I decided to give it a try while on vacation in Encinitas. The guys at Paddle Planet were very responsive and got back to me by phone and email within a few hours to set a time and date. Price was pretty reasonable, $149 for two people, including board rental and a 90 minute lesson. Since we'd never tried it before, we took our lesson out on a quiet lagoon instead of the ocean. Met up with Paul at the store, he was nice enough to loan me a wet suit. Took a little while to get organized and out to the lagoon, then we did some stretches and basic instruction on dry land before heading out. There wasn't a whole lot in the way of instruction, maybe because my daughter and I are already experienced canoeists and this didn't seem all that different. Still, we had a very enjoyable time paddling about and getting the hang of things, it was a great introduction. Can't wait to try it out on the ocean! read more

I have purchased four paddle boards here since 2015. My first purchase was two 10'6" Rivieras, one for my wife and one for me. We used them to paddle for exercise. After I became a SUP surfer I purchased two Starboards for surfing. I've also purchased paddles and many other accessories. I've been happy with all purchases. Greg and Chris have been great. Today I bought a paddle from Mark, the new store manager. He is also very knowledgeable and helpful. All have been honest and fair with me, never pushy. While the store is dedicated to SUP and it's great to see a large selection and knowledgeable staff. I cannot say that I recommend this store to anyone actually buying a SUP. It's a great store to explore new SUPs. I purchased a new SUP last year from here. This year I've spent 4 weeks and lots of personal time trying to find a replacement to the port plug that came installed in my board. I went back to the store looking for help, but they were not able to recommend any workable solution other than to contact the shaper. After contacting the shaper for Von Sol, I was told the board is made oversees and the part is not known, good luck. To summarize: I purchased $1800 SUP, only to have a $4 plug fail. Neither this store or the shaper we're capable of helping to find a replacement. I would have expected both the store and shaper to stand by their product. Btw, I'm close to finding a solution, finally got the right thread size determined and a replacement is in the mail. read more

This place was great! It is a little hard to find because its tucked in the back but worth going to. Paddle boards were great. The guy who works there even worked with giving us a discount since we rented 2 of them. He also let us keep them overnight since we wanted to paddle board in the afternoon (and the store would be closed by the time we got back). Very easy transaction. We had our own truck and he helped us get everything into the back of the truck along with the supplies needed to strap it down. Very nice people and very helpful. Sorry to say I can only give 2 stars. My husband and I have his and hers kayaks, and we're avid paddlers. We needed one extra yak for the day and grabbed a quick Groupon at a decent price. The young lady over the phone was friendly but the place was hard to find on HWY 101. When we arrived although nobody was in the store we had a hard time keeping the attention of the salesperson. She kept getting up and leaving, then grabbing the phone and simply getting registered with one solo paper form was a chore. Eventually the paperwork was done and she said we could step out back and somebody would be right out to get us set up with the rental for the day........... 30 some-odd minutes later......feet shuffling....waiting......going back in the store......making our presence known.......and still nobody???? We just wanna load up and get on the water and frankly daylight is burning. wth? Eventually it occurred to the salesgirl that we had been there a REALLY long time and why were we still browsing around? She asked if we needed help and we said YEA, we're still WAITING....... clueless..... Eventually we got the kayak & headed out.....but I want that 45-50 mins back. There are too many other great rental shops in town to go thru that again. Sad to say, we love to support local businesses......but we won't be back again. read more

These guys understand stand up paddling. I rented a board for a race and spent more time talking about the race with the guys there than the race took. I should have listened to their advice and gotten a touring board rather than the "yoga-style" board-- I underestimated my ability. Best performance SUP board shop in greater San Diego. I came in from Boston wanting to rent a 8.5' performance SUP and these guys have a selection second to none. I tried 15+ shops before finding Paddle Planet. Most rental shops only carry 11'-12' resort boards for rent, but Paddle Planet has carries everything long, short and best in class SUP boards for surfing the San Diego breaks. This business gets 5 stars for the customer service. I called before I came after reading some Yelp reviews. The girl on the phone was incredibly kind and answered some questions before I even came down. Upon arrival (parking is tough) I was greeted by the girl on the phone who was much younger than I expected but a ready saleswoman. She explained to me all of my options for the roof rack I needed for my PBs. The entire time she helped me compare prices never trying to solely sell me on the one that would make them the most business. When we came to a point where we were both stumped, the owner who was eating lunch outside, came in. I'm certain he was the girl's father. He helped me just as much and also gave me some great advice for transporting, unloading, and loading my PBs. (I've only had them a week). In the end, we discussed everything until they knew I was completely satisfied. I was extremely appreciative of their friendly approach to customer service. I did forget to ask for a military discount so I wonder if they offer it. As for everything else. Yes, it is a tight space. I did see prices for boards and paddles that were astronomical to me but I can only compare those to what I payed for mine. My board was definitely shorter than the pricey ones I saw. This business in certain though will steer you the right way. read more

I went here for my Ocean Kayak purchase for a couple of reasons. One, I like supporting local business. Second, this was my first kayak and I hoped I would get a more personal experience compared to the big sports stores. I wanted to talk to someone who sold kayaks as a priority rather than someone who sold tents yesterday and maybe hiking boots the day before. I went in with a specific kayak in mind. I'm one of those guys that will research something to death before purchasing. Greg and I spoke for awhile and he suggested I might be happier with a longer kayak. He made the suggestion without making me feel clueless and he wasn't at all pushy. I felt like it was sincere advice with my interests, not his, in mind. He took the time to understand what my use would be and what kind of waters I would be using it on. His advice was spot-on and I'm glad I followed his recommendation. I didn't want the paddle he offered in the package so he politely offered to reduce the price by the value of the paddle. He also offered to try to get the paddle that I wanted. He delivered the kayak the same day (no charge) and contacted accessory vendors for questions that I asked but that he didn't have the answers to. It's a small shop and looks family run. I noticed some folks in there that seemed that they might be his friends. They were also very friendly to me. You can tell a lot about a guy by his friends. A+ experience for me. read more

I purchased the bic ace tec 11 6 wind sup. i was a long time wind surfer turned surfer then paddle boarder. at times paddling in high winds i missed windsurfing. Paddle Planet told me about the wind sup. I ordered the Bic 11 6. I could not be more pleased with this board! it surfs great as a stand up paddle, and windsurfs great in our so cal light winds. it planes easily in moderate winds. I even windsurf once in a while with my 85 pound dog on the front, and i weigh 240. now that my dog is a regular on the board i am considering the Starboard 12 2 free ride. the wind sup seems to plain at lower speeds but are not designed to go to the real high speeds of the pure short board wind surfer, but try paddling one of those. this one paddles great! Also in the past i purchased a very fast kayak from paddle planet called the Zest. it is the fastest sit on kayak. I highly recommend it. read more

I wanted to get a SUP board with very definite minimum length and width in mind. The owner (or whoever I talked to) seems quite expert. And he kept assuring me that he was listening to what I was saying I needed. He then proceeded to ignore what I told him and steer me toward boards that absolutely were way outside of the size, length and volume that I need. He then told me what he surfs. Amigo, what you surf is irrelevant. What I am able to surf - and what I told you I am looking for - is what's relevant. I'll look elsewhere. read more

We loved them, and will be back any time we want to go SUPing. We wanted to rent SUPs in the Encinitas area, and found this place online. The owner was VERY helpful - he has a large stock of rental boards, so I don't think they ever run out (I tried reserving on a Sunday in August, and he said it wasn't necessary). We went paddling on the lagoon nearby, and he gave us perfect instructions of where to enter the water. They do lessons too, and next time we will go in the ocean. Small local place, friendly staff, close to the water - what's not to love! They'll be our local SUPplier (sorry!) from now on. :) read more

Spent 2000 dollars at Paddle Planet and ended up with a defective board. Multiple Manufacturing issues. Not a big deal these things happen. It was the way it was handled or not handled that bothered me. The owner made me feel like I had done something wrong. Greg never looked at the board or asked any questions. I can't help you these things happen is what I was told. A loner board would have been nice or setting me up with someone who could repair the board. This would have been fine. When I did get the board repaired it was discovered that the wood veneer was defective and the handle leaked as well. I had to take it on myself to call Starboard. Later after I dropped the board off at the shop I asked how things were going and was told. " it's out of my hands it's up to Starboard know." He would not even make a phone call. Are you kidding. Eventually another shop had to take on the issue that should have been handled at Paddle Planet. This situation has me writing the first negative reviews I have ever written. The owner is not a bad guy. If you do not have any issues I am sure you will be fine. If you do the folks over at Ding King are awesome. This place not so much. read more

Rental went great got what seemed like a brand new high end board same one for sale in store for 1500 rented it for half day $45 seemed like great deal! They helped get on car supplied everything, did have one little mix up one board didn't have the little leash loop but we improvised. read more

I'm fairly new to the ocean and paddle boarding. Stopped by to check the place out as I had heard great things about Paddle Planet from some friends. My ultimate goal was to improve my skills in the ocean paddle boarding. The minute I walked in Paul immediately warm welcomed. Asked me what I was up to and spent 15 minutes chatting about everything. Relaxed and very cool dude. He recommended I spend some time with Chris in the 201 course called "ocean paddle class". It's a small group lesson super focused. Luckily I went out solo with Chris on an early morning lesson. Suffice it to say I learned a ton from Chris and he was a blast to spend the morning with. I have been practicing and using the techniques so that I can enroll in the 301 class which focuses on paddle surfing. So glad I took the course and did it with such great people. If you are into SUP these guys are the masters. Great shop of unique and customized boards and stuff for whatever you need. Check it out.... read more

I had a great experience with Greg and his team at Paddle Planet. They were very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. It's a chill vibe; they were not pushy at all and let you peruse the boards. I felt they were most interested in the customer getting a good board vs. just pushing product. This is key as any good sup is going to cost a decent amount. They've got a good selection of stand up boards, the best selection I found in North County. They have a good selection of boards to demo too which is great for trying boards before you buy. I tried a few boards out, visited several times over the course of a few weeks trying to figure out what I really wanted and ended up buying a board. read more

I was in Encinitas in October 2012 with a large group of friends celebrating the life of a friend who had recently been killed in the line of duty. Some of us rented paddle boards, kayaks, etc. from Greg at Paddle Planet. There were to be two drop off points for the equipment because we had people with different abilities, issues with carrying kayaks down steps, etc. To make a long story short, Greg never made it to the second drop off to deliver the boards. Luckily there were people in the parking lot with extra boards that allowed all of us to borrow boards and we were all able to paddle out and honor our friend. All's well that ends well - or so I thought. After 3 months and 3 phone calls Greg still has not credited me for the charge on my card. Every time I called he promised he would credit my card. One time he even took down my address and said he would send me a check. Nothing. My advice is to stay away from this business. There are too many other board rental companies that you should not risk falling victim to this guy. I am a reasonable person and if Greg the owner credits my card I will be more than happy to change this review. Update: I have changed my rating to 4 stars based on the fact that Greg has refunded the full amount of my paddle board reservation. Thank you Greg. I truly believe he made every effort that day to help our group with all our special requests and can only assume he would do the same for any future customers. read more

My friend wanted to rent paddleboard on Wednesday, September 30th and we went paddle planet because it was on their website that they open at 9. We arrived at 9, but the store was closed. Sign on door said they open at 9, tried calling. After waiting patiently for 30 min, we left and found a surf shop in Cardiff that was open. Next time we will bypass paddle planet and head straight to the Cardiff surf shop. read more

What a disappointment. After overcharging us over $1000 it took over two months, and multiple calls to try to resolve it. This was after acknowledging the overcharge and a promise to send a check for reimbursement, which was never sent. We contacted our credit card, and only then it was resolved. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere to find a shop with integrity. read more
