I bought my long sleeve tee right around Christmas and last week I saw a whole bunch of threads coming out of the bottom of the tee. Rented a pair of foam boards and wetsuits from progression this morning and got out for about 25…read moreminutes until my girlfriend took a weird fall and dislocated her kneecap. We had to take a truck on the beach to moonshine because she was unable to make the walk to exit Leucadia beach. This was problematic for us because we didn't know how we were gonna be able to return the boards and wetsuits. I called the guy working at the store to work this out and he said it would be no issue at all for me to leave the boards and wetsuits at the top of the stairs and they would take care of the pickup. This was an absolute godsend. They went totally out of their way to help us out when we needed it, and they were very sympathetic and said they hoped that she was ok and they were sorry about what happened. On top of this they didn't charge us anything for the day. And on top of THAT they had the best prices out of all the stores we checked for rentals, very affordable and simple. I just have to say the service at this establishment is absolutely exemplary and the gentleman working the store that day should be commended. I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to buy or rent surfing equipment in Encinitas!

Prices overall seem reasonable - I was SO stoked to see a huge so many different types of surfboard fins, leashes and traction pads (relative to what I've seen at most local surf shops). Boards range from tiny finish to classic longboards - new and used offering (the used boards I saw were in loft section and they had some really cool stuff there). I found the staff to be very helpful and accommodating - I popped in to check out a very particular board model, asked a bunch of questions and the staff answered them all without issue or attitude! Apparently, they have a demo program for some of their boards as well but not sure how extensive it is...but it's a nice option to have before dropping a grip of dough on a new board. Definitely a cool spot I would 100% check out again.

He gave me a few recommendations over the phone, and instead of thinking about it for a few days, I made the 60-mile drive down the very next day -- impatience at its finest. When I got there, Mike greeted me, spent a ton of time answering questions, listened to all my concerns, and never once tried to upsell me. He was super laid back, knowledgeable, and helped me find the perfect longboard for where I am in my surfing journey. After I made my decision, he walked me through everything, explained why he recommended the board, threw on an initial wax job, and even hooked me up with a few bars for the drive home. The best part? Everything he told me about the board turned out to be true. On my first session, the difference was immediate. The board performed exactly as he described and made the transition from my old board incredibly easy. I was already hooked on surfing before, but after riding this board, I now have an even bigger hunger to get in the water. Honestly, it's probably not healthy. hahaha! A few weeks later, I called the owner, John, just to let him know how happy I was with the experience. He was every bit as genuine as Mike--clearly someone who cares about his customers and has a real passion for surfing. I will try and make this review of two Degree 33 boards as fair as possible. The first board I tried was a 9'6" Nexgen standard longboard. The board construction and finish was very good with only a few flaws. In Hawaiian waters, the board dropped into small and medium sized waves easily and handled extremely well. Feedback to the rider was first rate and it responded like a shortboard. It wasn't a nose-rider model, but I had to try. It could handle my weight (190 lbs.) past the half way zone to another foot, but after that it bogged down, even in perfect trim. I didn't try it in overhead conditions, so I can't comment on its performance on larger waves. My overall impression was quite positive, which lead me to the purchase of the next reviewed board. The 10'2" Epoxy 'Hanger' model arrived in very good condition with only a few minor flaws, but with one major issue--the center fin box was not aligned correctly. It was off only a few degrees, so it likely won't cause rideability problems. However, problems like this should not occur with manufactured boards. The overall look was quite nice and it received many positive comments from onlookers. I tried the board in a variety of conditions, from clean 2 footers to overhead Hawaiian waves. I also compared the board with an Infinity epoxy 10' noserider. The first thing I noticed was that it was difficult to turn. So, in an attempt to loosen it up, I removed the side-bite fins and slid the center fin as far forward as possible. This didn't help, so I bought a small 5" center fin and with the side fins attached, I was able to finally loosen it up a bit, but only after sliding the small fin all the way forward. This set-up allowed for hard bottom turns, but did some side-slipping during attempts to nose ride on hollow faces. Personally, I like a bit of side slipping, but many people don't. On larger waves, the board performed like a gun--very stable and fast on down-the-line sections. Cut backs were awkward and slow with little or no responsiveness. Feedback to the rider was nil and as a result, movement on the board was forced. Problems: This board is advertised as a nose-rider. On Hawaiian waves, it is not. The board I used as a comparison (Infinity 10' nose rider) did everything the Degree 33 didn't do. It was very maneuverable in all conditions, gave great feedback to the rider, to the point of begging him to go to the nose, which it loved. Now the infinity costs about twice as much, but the design is an old one and I think Luc and Holly should copy it and discontinue their current model, which happens to be an old Harbor design from the 60's. read more

First things first, the Degree33 team are the most helpful down to earth and friendly people you will ever come across. Super welcoming and their main goal is to get you what you need to have a good time catching waves. I have been a short boarder for the past 11 years, tried long boarding here an there, but I finally buckled down and got myself my first longboard. I got the Ladle nose rider and I am EXTREMELY HAPPY with it. I forgot what it was like to catch any wave I really tried for, and I also forgot what it felt like to ride a wave in all the way to the sandy shores... this board is epic, it is sturdy when I'm on the nose, and it still cuts a nice line when I'm looking for speed or a quick turn. it all takes practice. Ive read some reviews of people unhappy with their board like it doesn't work right or dinged the first time they surfed it, but honestly that aint the boards fault. the boards are hand crafted and designed one at a time for the best surfing in even the worst wave conditions. if your board isn't "working right" then just keep practicing.. if your board "dinged the first time you surfed it" then try not surfing near a crap ton of rocks. I surfed my board all day friday, all day saturday, and I rolled it a few times cuz I was feeling it out and getting my sea legs on, no dings, just smiles. Best board purchase I have ever done. If you want a quality board without emptying your bank then snag up one of Degrees boards. plus you have a 33 day trial on all boards. what more is there to question. Keep those noses up! My son lives in Hawaii. I live in SoCal but I go to Hawaii often to visit with my son and his family. Because we all surf I wanted to keep the exact same boards there and at home. My boards are a 10-0 and a 7-3. My son has the exact same boards I do. Plus a 6-2 short board. I have ordered 5 boards from Degree33 and had them all shipped (3 to Hawaii and 2 to my SoCal House). One of the boards arrived in Hawaii delaminated. The rest were in perfect condition. When we called Degree33 about the damaged board, even though it was the shippers and/or Hawaiian airport people's fault, Degree33 sent us a new board at no cost. It got to Hawaii in perfect condition. My son has had several friends stay with him in the 18 months he's lived in Hawaii. Most all of them are surfers and they have ridden my Degree33 boards while they were there. Because they all are expert surfers I was very interested in what they thought about my boards. They loved them. I've been surfing since 1957 and have ridden many board maker's boards in all those years. In my opinion Degree33 makes one of the very best boards in the business and they stand behind their product (as they proved by replacing the damaged board that was sent to Hawaii). When my boards arrived at my house I was amazed at the protection given to my new boards. If you're ordering a board from Degree33 and having it shipped; they do a great job of protecting it. I can't see how, with normal transporting techniques, it could possibility be damaged. Russell C read more

I have been surfing and buying surfboards since the mid 1960s, mostly in local shops or direct from many of the major manufacturers, however, I had never purchased one on-line before. I discovered Degree 33 about 2 1/2 years ago, and after several discussions with their staff, had the confidence to move forward with my first order. Since then I have purchased 3 custom made surfboards from Degree 33, and the process has always been flawless, from ordering to delivery, and each board was made exactly to my specifications. Recently I ordered a custom made Keelfather retro fish, but unfortunately, it arrived with significant damage due to mishandling by the shipping company. I was contacted immediately by the owner of Degree 33 and given the option of having the board repaired or replaced. I chose to have the board replaced, but more importantly, I was very impressed that my satisfaction was their priority, regardless of difficulty or cost to the company. My many years of experience buying surfboards can confirm this would not have been the response of most other surfboard manufacturers. I certainly would not have heard from the owner, and most would have referred me to the shipper. It's great when everything goes perfect, as it usually does with Degree 33, but I believe the true measure of a company is how they resolve issues when things go wrong. This experience is an example of their exceptional business ethics and integrity, which is why I will continue to be a Degree 33 customer. read more

I just got a 5'8 godfather epoxy from these guys and LOVE the board. Rides/performs amazing. But thats not why I'm giving these guys 5 stars. I own 2 bars in nyc and spent my life in the service industry and I've never dealt with such a friendly, knowledgable and professional staff. 1. Called twice to ask about the godfather. Both times the person spoke to me for 10-15 minutes, patiently answering questions I'm sure he's answered a million times before. 2. Drove 2 hours from LA to see the board where Rob, was attentive, informative but not pushy. He recommended captain fins, which I bought and will never use anything else again. Great recommendation. 3. Board was shipped in a timely fashion, but shortly after it arrived I noticed a small factory defect. I sent pictures and soon Garek was on the line, assessing the situation. 4. He called me back when he said he would, and was super friendly and understanding. He arranged a new pickup, swapped out the board for a new one, and delivered it a day later. 5. TOP OF THE LINE SERVICE. 6. I will not only tell every one I know about Degree33, Im sure my next board will also be from these guys. These boards are pure magic, I love my Ultimate so much! When I caught my first wave on it I knew it was true love! I was able to catch waves easier then on any of my other longboards and enjoyed the faster smoother ride. This board is truly incredible for both the beginner and advanced. In the same surf trip I was able to teach my four year old brother how to surf and catch a few hang tens myself. I was amazed by the versatility of the waves it could catch. I am able to (and consistently) ride him on everything from sand bar breaks, to reef breaks. I had never tried a nexgen before but was not disappointed, my little board is super durable and still very light and buoyant! Definitely my favorite longboard! I'm 5' 7" with a slim build and got the 8'0" which fits in my Volvo perfectly. Also... those rails! Dang! They were more chiseled than Michelangelo's statue of David. Overall this board was perfect for me, from the size, shape, durability, buoyancy, to the incredible waves he helps me catch (yes, he is a he and his name is kekoa) As for customer service, Degree 33 was INCREDIBLE! I was able to meet in person to pick up my board and they hooked me up with an incredible deal and answered every one of my questions and concerns, silly to serious :) I have fallen head over heels for this incredible little board and hope that everyone has just an incredible experience with The Ultimate and Degree 33 as I did! read more

Hey everyone! So I'd been shopping all over the place for my first surfboard, sure I grew up in California but I'd never surfed before and I'm an all in kinda of person, not the rent a board see if I like it maybe get around to it type. So I'd looked on the typical surf shops and wasn't really wanting to drop $500+ on a board right away, especially when I really didn't know what type was best for me. After a few weeks of looking I stumbled across Degree33 I knew a little about surfing and figured I'd check out what they have. The website is easy to navigate, there are videos provided for each style of board, and based in the sizing chart they provide ( I am 5'6, 130lbs) I went with The Jack board 6'4 full epoxy. I placed my order and they'd actually been having a memorial day Sale so I ended up getting my base coat, cold water wax, leash, and wax comb for free with my board, which was awesome! Degree33 is about an hour away from my residence so when the board was ready I headed out to their offices, was greeted as soon as I walked in and felt at ease. We talked about how it was my first board and they offered some suggestions as well as showed me how to put the fins in and transport my board. I purchase an Ultimate Epoxy long board about a year ago and have ridden it now for well over 100 sessions. This board performs better than any long board I have ever ridden and over my many years I have had boards of both "Classic" design and those from local shapers. My Ultimate paddles easily, turns great and catches lots of waves. In addition, this board is super durable. Even after my many sessions, there are still no pressure dings or any other dings for that matter. I purchase a 6'10" Epoxy Fun Board for my son and he has loved this board's performance and the edge it gives him to catch San Diego's traditionally softer surf. He has surfed it for well over 100 sessions and it is still in great shape! These boards offer incredible performance and are very durable! I have been so satisfied with these boards I have also purchase Ultimates for both my daughters. You can't find a better board than these and the fact that you can save 100's of dollars makes it all that much sweeter. Why pay $300.00 + at a surf shop for a used board when you can get a new one for only $450.00? Before you buy another board, you should talk with Luke and Holly. Just got an "Ultimate" 9 Foot Epoxy Long-board from these guys, my second "Bill Minard" design with them. Back in the 70's He made a board for me when he was with Gordon & Smith, in San Diego, and I still have that 7'2" Fishtail in my collection.... Anyway, just rode this Long-board this morning at a North County Reef break and it should be "Illegal" ! ... I probably caught 10-12 nice rights and a couple little left shoulders and did not work that hard. I am 63,and slowing down a little physically, but this board makes catching waves very easy yet acts like a much shorter board. Again, I have never rode a "Long-board" that makes catching waves so easy and I have a "quiver" of them...I believe the "Sharp Under Rail" design makes this board very maneuverable, and respond more like a much shorter board... Just crazy stoked on pulling the trigger on this purchase and it just went to number one for now on my "Fun Board" list. By the way you can nose-ride this sucker as well! The boards rock. I'm on the East Coast (NY) and the only think that has been better than the Ultimate 8.6 NextGen is the local-type service I received. Luc & Holly def' care about each customer, are super responsive, and want what's best for you. I had some damage (stupid UPS) on my board when it arrived and Holly was all over it with options, communication and results. With these folks you're going to get a great board and service no doubt. I took some tumbles and the board has held up with no problem. I see other reviews whining about problems when they're pulling off wicked cuts, bailing out of waves, and doing their p90x routine while surfing (please, I didn't know Slater still bought his own boards). If you're going to abuse your board even your nasa freaking space shuttle board is going to have issues. Go to their website and you'll see the waves of props for the product and service. I originally got the 6'0 epoxy codfather. I surfed in San Diego for labor day weekend and really couldn't handle the board. I needed something with more volume, I know I didn't give it a long trial period but I'm a once a month kind of surfer and if I couldn't handle it for 3 days then I knew I would get frustrated with the board back at home. I came to your shop and you guys were really understanding and helped me pick out a 7'10" Over Easy. I had it shipped to the east coast and I have been surfing the recent hurricane swells. I really like this board, the diamond tail is really easily to whip around, its surprisingly maneuverable for a board with this much volume. Duck diving is a challenge but I expected it to be, its the tradeoff for having more float. About a month ago, I picked up an Ultimate 9'6" performance longboard a board bag and a California Classic single fin to compliment the 2+1 fin set that the board came with. I went with their next gen epoxy for a little more durability than the fiber glass finish. I got a great deal on everything and the customer service was very good. So far I have ridden it in everything from 2-6' surf and am having a blast. This board is incredibly versatile and fun. It catches everything and can really fly on the larger surf. I like the feel of the next gen epoxy. It's not as stiff as an older NSP board that I used to ride. I have been surfing for 3 years now and this is my first brand new surfboard. I think it's the perfect buy for someone at my skill level. Not quite a custom shaped or designer board but certainly better than an NSP pop out. I've purchased two surfboards from Degree 33 so far ( Codfather and 8ft Ultimate) and i have to say that I am very pleased. I grew up Santa Monica and Malibu area and have been surfing since 1973, so I do know a little about surfboards, I will say their boards are excellent quality and perform as promised. Degree 33 has an excellent staff and in enjoyed doing business with Robert Goodman, I'm not big on surfboard mass production and marketing, however I am very impressed about Degree 33 business model and I will certainly be doing more business with them in the near future. The Codfather performs like dream and you cant get a more sturdier board, My 8ft Ultimate rides beautifully and did great this last swell at Ventura's California Street...I switched out the stock fin with a Trueames Yater Spoon fin and had blast! if your shopping for your first board then Degree 33 is your best option! read more

I've been checking out surfboards for the last 6 month couldn't find what I wanted for a cheap price then I found out about DEGREE 33 the next minute I was checking out there boards on-line right at my house and checking every single board I liked the designs I was hooked and I found out for another 100 dollar I could get a custom board so I was sold...I'm a beginner I bought a custom (8' foot board with a little yellow mix orange and red... ****ing AWESOME.. I went to the store checked out every board touching them and stuff then next minute I was buying a board bag to go with and wax and a bunch stuff. I was emailing holly,who was very helpful, before I went in and got a 9'2 triton(surf) paddle board. I'm 5'10 180 and it sits perfect in the water for me the new model they have is slightly wider than the dimensions of the one they have online but it gives you more stability so no complaining here. He did warn me about the learning curve when it came to stand up surfing and yes it is a struggle but still overall extremely fun to ride. Overall my experience at the shop was supreme all very friendly and helpful. The whole process was really fast no hassle and he even helped me out with strapping it down to my car. My only issue so far was that Have a small chip/crack on my side rail but that was my own doing by accidentally wacking it with my paddle but I put a little ding repair and got rail tape to protect the sides and my paddle and so far it's worked great read more

I wanted to say thanks to Remi, (I hoped I spelled that right if not I apologize). I just started surfing a few months ago and I love it. After driving over an 1 hour 1/2 almost every weekend just to get the beach I figured it was time to go ahead and buy my own board! Remi, got my board to me in less than a week! I have purchased a 9'6 Nex Gen longboard and a 6'0" blemished Jack Nex Gen board from Degree 33. Both boards are amazing, light, responsive, and just look great for the right price. In addition, Luc and the entire team are the most responsive surfers and retailers one can find. They spent a lot of time on the phone before the purchase and then followed up during the order process and again after the boards were shipped. This is my second purchase from Degree33. My first purchase is the Ultimate 8'6" - brought it out in chest-shoulder high waves in NE and it was responsive and super fun! Summer swells are small here so I was on the hunt for a 9'+ and found a closeout board on their website for a steal. It arrived broken in half at no fault to the store. Called and left Trevor a VM and he responded back immediately to resolve the issue. He offered to make a new board to replace the one I ordered but as I wanted to minimize any (more) environmental impact, I asked for a similar board that he may already have on hand. My wife and I checked them out online and decided to drop in to their shop on our road trip to SD. Great people, great service, great prices. We ended up buying two boards and liked things so much we're going back down in June to pick up another board to share with my bro. While we were there we also got to see them in action handling Internet orders. I'll tell you right now Luc and Holly take it seriously--they were hustling to get a an order out to HI and were double checking on the time and status--I'd feel VERY confident about ordering a board online from them. After years of living on the Central Coast, I now live in Texas but fly out to California to surf every chance I get. I was renting boards for awhile but then found Degree 33. I first bought a SUP and had it shipped to Texas and it has been a perfect board. Shipping was perfect, customer service was perfect and the board is great. I recently ordered a 9 foot longboard, flew out to San Diego, picked it up from the store and surfed it for 3 straight days. Picking it up from the store was easy and the board rides fast and smooth. I am heading back to San Diego in the next few weeks to pick up the 7 foot "Jack". I have no doubt the service will be great and I will have another sweet surfboard. Grand Ave & Richmond Street. I was sad to see Tyler Surfboards move to E Grand Ave & Eucalyptus Drive. It was an amazing shop but it was not in the public eye. The reason Tyler Surfboards should be in the public eye is this, Tyler Surfboards is an Art Gallery to surfers all over the world. Tyler and his shaping skills are works of art that could be mentioned in the same sentence as Michelangelo, Donatello & Bernini. Imagine my surprise when yesterday (12-19-2013) I was driving down W. Grand Ave and looked to my right and saw Tyler Surfboards new shop located at 118 W. Grand Ave. The shop had a sign out front indicating this was Tyler's new 'Flagship' store. I knew I had to stop and check it out so that is exactly what I did. I was even more blown away when I walked in the door and Tyler himself was working and Tyler could not have been any nicer. It is not often you get to talk surfing with a surfing legend. Tyler explained how he moved his shop from the Eucalyptus Drive location back onto W. Grand Ave and that is exactly where they should be and deserve to be. El Segundo is simply not El Segundo without driving up and down Grand Ave and not seeing 'Tyler Surfboards,' so stoked they are back. Tyler surfboards now shapes surfboards out of the old 'Greg Noll' surfboard factory in Hermosa Beach, CA while using the El Segundo location as the 'showroom' floor. If you have not checked out the new 'flagship' store front it is simply a must see. Tyler now sells everything from surfboards, t-shirts long-sleeved & short-sleeved, glasses (cups), hats and even amplifiers for your Iphone=) no better way to listen to the 'Surfaris' or 'The Beach Boys' then on your Tyler themed amplifier. Tyler surfboards are sign you have arrived. There is no mistaking a Tyler surfboard in the water. The way Tyler surfboards perform in the water is second to none. Tyler will make any board custom and no matter where you are located in the world he will ship it to you. Tyler even offers loaners to prospective buyers to test out the board before a purchase. I will without question be back soon, very soon to do just that. I see a Christmas present to myself in the near future. I ended up purchasing a new inspired Tyler surfboard designed t-shirt of a 'Model Clark Foam Planer' and of course I had to pick up a couple Tyler stickers for a little art project I am working on myself.
