When I was in college, Mitchell's Fish Market (as it was known then) was like the pinnacle of fancy dining. I was excited to hear that my family decided to meet up there for a post-Thanksgiving/birthday celebration for my niece the day after Thanksgiving. My brother arranged their private room for our group of 13 and it was a great experience. It took a bit for them to make sure the room was ready, but it was so cozy and pretty. The "happy birthday" menus are a nice touch. We were also able to bring in our own cake/cupcakes. We ordered some appetizers for the table - calamari and spinach artichoke dip. They were both good but the spinach artichoke dip was my favorite. The calamari was cooked nicely but a little bland. The dipping sauces were nice and a good variety. For my entree, I went with the Market Catch - king ora salmon. You can choose from several different options and select your preferred cooking method. I went with broiled and asked for it medium rare. Our main meals all came out at staggered times, but it wasn't too bad. I really liked the mashed potatoes that came with my plate. The fish was a little under seasoned, but cooked pretty close to medium rare. The portion size was great for me. Others had the fish and chips, shrimp and crab tortellini, seared scallops and risotto, etc. The shrimp and crab tortellini looked especially delicious! I didn't hear any complaints about the meals. I did have a bite of the clam chowder and found the clam I had to be pretty chewy and tough. Our server was really great the entire time, with refills constantly being poured and managing everyone's orders well. My first time here and I loved the bread. Sourdough covered in butter, tasted great. The first set was a bit stale but the next batch was hot and tasty! My meal was the blackened fish tacos. I was hoping for a peppery flavor or Cajun or something. But it was instead very bland and almost dirty tasting. The double layer corn tortillas were a bit cold. Even the avocado and salsa in it were not enough to give it flavor, perhaps much more lime, I guess. Anyway it was not very satisfying for me. And if it was just that I would have give a 2-3 stars. However my wife and daughter had great meals. My wife had the seafood Americana. She loved the sauce and shared it with me to help me eat my bland blackened fish. My daughter loved her Shanghai sampler and was give chopsticks to enjoy it more. They gave us a free crème brûlée for my daughter's birthday and the service was good. All these factors bumped up my review stars. Oh the spinach dip was pretty good, but ask for no onions on top. That was a bit over the top. Over all a good experience and clean location. Best happy hour in the area hands-down! I tend to eat dinner early so big fan of happy hours with good food. Lots of burgers and tots in the Lansing area so this spot is refreshing. Wine prices are good, highly recommend the fish tacos. read more

Was here about a week ago and both of our meals were not good. The steak had to be sent back 3 times and finally arrived tough. Our other seafood entree was mostly broth and spinach leaves. We went to Mitchell's on Sunday night for an anniversary dinner with two of our children and their spouse. This visit was absolutely disappointing for the fact that they were out of so many things that we tried to order. There wasn't any filet mignon since they ran out. There wasn't any snow crab to add on to the order since they were out! You couldn't get picatta style fish since they were out. It was terribly frustrating! The manager came over only to say sorry but they didn't realize that MSU had parents weekend......really, who is reviewing what's happening for scheduling and ordering purposes?! We ate here last night and I wasn't impressed. The staff kept commenting how busy they were as an excuse for their poor service. They didn't look that busy to me. The food is pretty average and the portion size is very small for the price. We started out with a caesar salad which was very dry. Then we had the lobster bisque soup which was very good. For our entree we had the stuffed cod which was ok. The fish was very tender but it needed some more seasoning. It was very average and not worth the price. Being in Lansing, I've searched for something seafood and Mitchell's popped up. Sitting at the bar, violet was the bartender. She was patient and courteous as this was my first time here. I ordered the Cucumber Lavender drink which was amazing! It was well made. She recommended the Ginger Salmon as an entree. It was to die for! Just don't go. Far to inconsistent. Never order Uber eats from them. When it dot to my hotel room the reek of old fish permeated the air. Fresh fish, doesn't smell fishy. I had a couple of bites because I thought maybe I was overly critical. The fish was hard, not juicy, and if this was their attempt at blackening your southern passport has been revoked. Good to see them watering down the clam chowder again. No wonder Cameron Mitchell divested himself from this dumpster fire. I was a bit iffy on this restaurant due to the current reviews. However, I went on a late Thursday night. I knew we were cutting it close to the restaurant closing time. At first I was having bad vibes. We walked in after a large party with about an hour left. They were taken to their seats promptly. However the hostess looked at us a party of only two and you could tell she was irritated and didn't want to seat us. She explained she had to look for a place since it was close to the closing time and she would be back. We said okay and waited and after what seemed to be around 10 minutes she finally found a seat.... However, after that our experience was beyond great! We had "fish" as our waitress and she was phenomenal! She made it a point to learn our names! She even brought out a vase to put the flowers in that my date brought me! For food we got a dozen oysters, and 2lbs of snow crab! Which was great! They divided the crab for each of us! Then we ended the night with crème brulee my favorite! My girlfriend and I came in tonight as a spontaneous dinner date. Although we did not have a reservation, they were able to seat us right away. We have had their fish and chips for take out. But this was our first time dining in. We were at a loss for words. I forget the actual name of our server, but she said her nickname was cheese. She was outstanding. She asked us for our names and would address us using our names. She made it feel very welcoming. At one point I said "I'm sorry but can I get some ketchup" she immediately said there's no need to ever apologize and that she was more than happy to get whatever I needed. She was on top of refilling our drinks. She also was always giving suggestions on what she likes on the menu. Server aside, as stated before with this being our first time dining in, we only have ever had the fish and chips. This time we had the calamari for an appetizer, it was wonderful. We were skeptical as we ordered calamari from Bravo, next door and it was absolutely horrible. But this calamari was amazing. We ordered our usual fish and chips for dinner, amazing as always. And for dessert I ordered the creme brûlée and my girlfriend ordered the shark fin sundae (I believe it was called something like that). I cannot say a single thing bad about this place. Over priced and over rated is how I'd describe Mitchell's on first try at this restaurant. I know it's a chain, so that's one strike. I'm not going to eat at one again after this experience. I ordered happy hour specials, including the margarita (weak and lame), shrimp potstickers (covered in an unbelievably salty sauce), and Bloody Mary oysters (serviceable). I followed with Mitchell's Market Trio (see photos) for $31. My plate came out underwhelming. Two measly half stacks of asparagus, corn that wasn't part of the menu description, salmon that was over seasoned and nearly over cooked and dry, a crab cake that was decent, and shrimp that were the consistency of leather and also over seasoned. The waiter came over and asked me if I wanted another drink, I politely declined and pointed out the issue with the shrimp. He seemed surprised, but apologized, then took them away and brought a new order of shrimp a few minutes later much more presentable and edible. I guess I figured that for a $30 plate of seafood, it should be somewhat decent, but heck, I am in the middle of Michigan, and they don't offer local seafood. My bad. Oh, and their WiFi is untenable.
