I really wanted to love love love this place. Mission BBQ is a quick casual restaurant that serves barbecued meats and sandwiches. The large restaurant has an industrial vibe: long iron and wood picnic tables and benches line up across the concrete floor, corrugated aluminum roofing decorate the walls, inspirational words grace the walls, and emblems for military and first responders cover the walls. The line was short on a Sunday afternoon - by the time I placed my order and got my drink, the restaurant was almost done packaging the meal. I ordered the oak-smoked brisket, moist, please, and a side of baked beans. Unfortunately, the brisket was tough-to-swallow dry, as was the cornbread. The half yard-bird sampled was much better. Also unfortunate, the side salad came without the requested dressing - just little annoyances that spoiled the meal. Will there be a return visit? Absolutely! I love barbecue and more importantly, I appreciate the focus on the military and first responders. My nephew and I ate at Mission BBQ in Troy for the first time before heading to a football game in Detroit. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the food was all very good with good sized portions. I had the brisket and baked beans and my nephew had the brisket sandwich and the mac and cheese. Barbecue is serious business in this town, and it all depends on what style you are looking for. I don't know that I have a style so much as how the meat is prepared and tastes. I wanted to check this place out since it's a reasonable distance from my home. Both times that I have been here, I have had a really good experience. For starters, their menu is great, not just a select few items. They have awesome sides, but right now I am hooked on the Macaroni and Cheese, which is amazing! I've gotten chopped brisket both times I have been here, and the portions are large and delicious. Even without me adding barbecue sauce at my table! The sauce just enhances how good the meat is. Plus, the service is really nice and they are super helpful with answering questions. I also have tried their BBQ sauces, and I liked almost all of them. The variety spans, but try all of them at least once. Trust me, their good! This place is better then a few others in the area that I have been too, and it's worth a trip to dine. I arrived at noon with a couple coworkers, walking into the national anthem being played over the speakers, which they do every day at the same time - really cool. The staff were all really friendly and helpful. One of them even came by and served some free "freedom fries" to us! The food is all freshly made and tasty. I ordered a 2 meat sampler - brisket and pulled pork, which comes with a piece of cornbread. I added 2 sides - Mac & cheese and green beans. The brisket can be ordered lean or moist, the latter meaning that it has some marbling in it. I chose the moist, and it was really good. It wasn't too fatty and it had great flavor. The same can be said about the pulled pork. There were 6 different barbecue sauces to choose from at all the tables. My favorite was the smoky mountain sauce, which was sweet and had a smoky flavor to it. The sides were pretty good. Mac & cheese had a firm texture and a crispy panko topping. Not the best mac I've had, but solid. The green beans tasted better than they looked. They were simmered with bacon and onions, and had a little bit of heat to them. The freedom fries I sampled were crispy on the outside but soft on the inside - very good. The cornbread was the weakest part of the meal, since it was quite dry. Review based on two recent visits. First of all, the service is excellent. Staff are friendly and make polite conversation. They don't hesitate to give recommendations when asked about menu options. It's so refreshing compared to the average worker at other food establishments. Food was excellent on both visits. I had the ribs the first time and they were fall off the bone but still had a good bark on them. Second visit I had brisket and it was juicy and tender. I love that they have 6+ sauces to try. The sauce was described as sweet and smoky, and this was 100% accurate. It was a perfect balance of both sweet and smoky. I ordered the pulled chicken sandwich with fries. I love how this restaurant is basic, but in a good way. The sandwich was just bun and pulled chicken. I got to top it with whatever sauce(s) I desired. I definitely went with the Memphis Belle BBQ sauce. Their fries were crispy and lightly seasoned, but of course, I used the Memphis Belle BBQ sauce as a dip. The customer service here is amazing. There was a very little wait. After placing my order, it was only a 2-3 minute turnaround for my order to be up. When they called it out, they stated, order for Mr. Muhammed". Also I requested the large tanker truck for my event, I was told it would show up when I spoke to them 1 week before. I had pictures planned with the photographer to include the truck. I would say most of the sides were very bland. The potatoes in my potato salad we're not cooked. The brisket tasted more like roast beef and the bark was extremely salty. The staff was very very friendly, and helpful. But when sitting down at my table, the table was sticky and not wiped off very well. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled across Mission BBQ while on business in the area. I had planned on going to the Northville location which is near my home. I only had time for a takeout so I ordered the pulled pork sandwich. It was ready before I had a chance to put my wallet away after paying. The sandwich is good, but I did not like the Memphis Belle sauce that one of the employees recommended. I did use the sauce sparingly though since I felt that it needed something added to it. It's nice you can choose which type of brisket you want: lean or fatty. The brisket was decent but nothing special. The ribs were pretty good, it was tender and wasn't dry. Half the time I order ribs somewhere, it's dry and disappointing. The sides were lackluster. The macaroni and cheese was bland and the potato salad was meh. Inside you can choose to dine and or carry out after placing your order. They have a condiment station on the other side of the drinks which is nice. They even have little containers for you to take some sauce with you if you are carrying out. Everyone there is very friendly and helpful which is always nice.
