Great meal today for lunch. Pulled pork sandwich (traditional) was awesome. Stacked high with pork that was tender and not dried out. 6 sauces to choice from at the table. First timer dining at this establishment! What a wonderful experience from the time we entered the building (early dinner) to leaving after eating our meal! Nate, the general manager enthusiastically greeted my family and explained our options while reviewing the menu at the counter. Husband ordered the smoked chicken, my son and I ordered the ribs. There were sauces with descriptions on the table which were a delight to try, the food was delicious! Prior to leaving, Nate, general manager came up to our table and chatted for bit! Had a hankering for some smoked brisket. After reviewing the reviews, decided to finally check it out. Location parking lot is always busy but able to get a close parking spot. Walked and the place is very interesting decor. When you walk up to order the bottled drinks like beer are on ice and available. Ordered 1lb Brisket, half of Yardbird, slab of baby back ribs, Kickn greens and baked beans. Brisket was juicy and tender. You could even taste smoke flavor but not seasoned as I expected. So dipped it Sauce and ate it. Half yard bird was dry. All of it! Rib tasted like the day before. Slightly tasted Baked beans and they were sweet! I could see chunks of brisket in them. When I asked one of your team members, Chris, for a recommendation as a new customer unfamiliar with the menu he was extremely disrespectful in his response. I struggle with severe anxiety, and ordering can be a very difficult experience for me. Unfortunately, his behavior made the situation significantly worse and left me feeling very uncomfortable. Great BBQ. Great service. I don't think I've ever met a friendly bunch of people. Lots of smiles, multiple people came up to our table to check that our food was good and to converse with us. We brought our little ones and were promptly helped with seating arrangements and coloring pages, which was so sweet. I had the brisket sandwich, corn on the cob, and kickin' collard greens. First BBQ joint where I actually truly enjoyed the collard greens. We were given free banana puddings as first time customers (and it was GOOD banana pudding) as well as some coupons for a free sandwich on our next visit. If you aren't the patriotic type, you might want to order takeout as the restaurant is overwhelmingly decorated with military paraphernalia. I used Mission for an office catering order. While it took several tries to get someone to call me back, once I got someone, they were very helpful. The setup and food were very good. The delivery person made it look nice. From an ordering perspective, it is very expensive. I would expect this of a meat order but really found that the sides were oddly balanced in quantity by comparison. Decided to try Mission BBQ after our go to City Barbecue is moving locations and currently closed. We ordered pulled pork, brisket, and baked beans through their online website. Food was good, pickup process needs major improvement. Upon arrival at the location there is a sign on the door to go through a different door and bypass the register - going directly to the pickup counter where there is a sign for online order pickup. I arrived at the exact time it said my order would be ready. I stood there for 5-7 minutes and no one acknowledged I was there nor was there a stack of food for pickup like other restaurants (which I learned was bc they keep the food in a warmer). After a long line cleared from the register and I heard someone say they were there for pickup, I decided to also tell them I was here for pickup. The cashier announced I had an order for pickup and asked if I needed a receipt. I proceeded to wait another 15 minutes until I noticed my order was not on their order screen and asked about it and she said oh and went to the warmer behind the wall to get my food. I waited 15 minutes for nothing. While waiting another online order patron had an issue with not receiving fries (they show you the food and confirm your order before packing it up which is nice), the other cashier said that the online order system isn't great and often has mistakes. He had the receipt which showed no fries and she showed her phone receipt which had an order of fries. He acknowledged that he believed her just wanted to know how many orders she needed, he was making it right and was very courteous in doing so. I also watched the expeditor put together the orders and when presenting to the customer it was often wrong and he was a tad on the slower side, so there was a large crowd waiting to pickup their food. Now the food: the pulled pork was delicious, moist and some crispy bits. The baked beans were great, lots of flavor and not overly sweet, a slight tang which I enjoyed. The brisket we ordered the chefs choice cut which was a mistake bc it was dry, should've chosen the moist option. Each of the meats came with a corn bread which was inconsistent - one was very thin and the other was 3x the size. We also got one of each of their standard sauces to try (6 total). They had quite the range from sweet and smokey to spicy and mustardy. All of them were good, none were incredibly spicy. Each of our group of three found 1-2 they liked. read more

Have been looking for a good BBQ and heard good things about Mission BBQ, so wanted to give it a try. When you walk in, you walk up to the register, place your order and wait for it to be prepared. There is plenty of seating in the restaurant and it is decorated with all kinds of pictures and military memorabilia throughout. Each table has a selection of 6 different sauces, ranging from spicy to sweet. We ordered the beans, coleslaw, mac and cheese, brisket, ribs and french fries as well as cornbread. Everything tasted good, but nothing had me thinking "wow this is some great BBQ". Some of the food had less flavor than others (coleslaw) and the fries were overly salted. I want to be careful in how I phrase what I say here because I could give a false impression of what I mean when discussing the ambiance/decor of the restaurant. The food was good. Not the best BBQ I've ever had in my life, but good. I had a 5-bone baby back rib order that was $18.60 with the baked beans I ordered. I also wanted to try their pulled pork, so I got a sandwich that cost $8.59. And I had an iced tea. The $28.62 bill seemed a little steep, but at least it was an order-at-the-counter place and I didn't have to spend an additional amount of money to tip anybody. Everything tasted good enough, it was too much food and I couldn't finish everything. So I'd recommend the BBQ, especially with the sweet flavored sauce (I don't remember the name of the different sauces, I didn't write them down and I don't see them on their Web site). What I want to be very specific about is complimenting them on their 'mission' and the way they express it in their restaurant. They are very military oriented here. Their motto is "The American Way." The restaurant's walls are full (and I do mean FULL) of Armed Forces-related banners and flags, framed quotes from various generals and admirals throughout U.S. history, and photos I'd describe as either military-related or Americana. There's a TV that was showing what appeared to be some kind of military documentary. And in the center of the restaurant is a small table with a white tablecloth, perfect place settings, and a POW/MIA flag on it. I suspect you get talked to quite sternly if you dare sit at this table. I compliment them on all of this. My family has a deep military heritage, I'm an Army brat and have respect for it. But I have to be candid. I fully expected that in our present day and age, when I saw the "American Way" and the military sloganeering, I fully expected there to be a right wing political bent thrown in there somewhere. It's simply a reality that the two seem to go hand in glove anytime you see the 'Murica stuff, and I personally abhor it. I wouldn't have been surprised at all to have seen anti-Biden posters and a photo of Obama or one of the Clintons with crosshairs painted on it. But there was none of that. It was all tasteful. It was very much in your face, I mean, there's no doubt of what direction these folks are coming from. But I took every bit of it as an homage to veterans, the military and especially its leadership, and America's might as the greatest fighting force on Earth. A very good BBQ chain themed to honor those who serve. I opted for the three-meat sampler ($20.00), combining brisket, pulled pork, and sausage, which comes with a piece of cornbread. The portions were all good size. The brisket and pulled pork were tender and flavorful, and there are about 10 sauces to choose from (each table has a "six-pack" of sauce bottles, but more is available). There are three types of sausage available, and I opted for the "classic" (they also offer jalapeno and cheese). It was very good (I actually ate it before I thought to take a photo of the meal). Because I can't eat BBQ without it, I also got a side of cole slaw ($2.50), which was creamy and flavorful. Overall, a very good meal. The moment I walk into this restaurant, I can feel the air of patriotism--in a good way. Just from the decor, the pictures on the wall, everything else. I wondered if it was owned by somebody who was in the military or a veteran, so I googled it. Indeed, Mission BBQ was started by two passionately patriotic friends who decided to express it through BBQ and celebrating the country's heroes (soldiers, firefighters, police, first responders, etc.). Props to them! I personally love BBQ. I'm not usually big on American food, but if any, I love BBQ--especially brisket and ribs. Thankfully they have meat sampler options where you can pick two types of meat. I went for my favorite cuts (brisket & ribs). It came with two sides; I went for coleslaw and baked beans. And I'm so happy that the meal came with complimentary cornbread. The cornbread was fluffy and delicious! Pretty decent size too. It's not too sweet, which is excellent. The beans were good; the coleslaw was crunchy and creamy. A bit more acidity would be great. The meat looks smaller than I would expect, but you realize it's a pretty decent portion once you start eating. Well-seasoned, a good combination of fatty and meaty. My friend told me their mac and cheese was one of the best, but unfortunately, I'm not good with cheese, so I skipped it, but maybe you can give it a try. read more

Well hubby wanted to try some place new so we tried Mission BBQ. Really good! I always get chicken to try it out first. They only had Pepsi products and they do carry bottled Coke but it's $3 a bottle. They had raspberry ice tea for me which is fine. I ordered the pulled chicken meal with one side. It doesn't look like a lot of food but it was more than enough for me. The meal came with cornbread and a drink. My side I got cheesy potatoes. Everything was very good! The chicken without bbq sauce had a really good seasoning and smoke. I liked their Memphis Belle sauce that was the right sweetness for me. It's a repeater! Tonight will be the key. Some bbq food gives me acid reflux and some does not. I hope this one has none because I'd like to be a regular here and it's a first responders theme.... all is right in the wold. read more

I like all of the tribute to the military service and public safety folks. Cool thought provoking quotes above the north and south walls. The general manager, Heather greeted us at the door. She was super cool and even let us sample some of their different meats too. Heather has such a magnetic, energetic and amiable personality, she's a fantastic GM here. She is all over, behind the counter, checking on tables. This is very much a customer focused restaurant. It feels like a cozy neighborhood joint by the end of your visit. We ordered the 2 meat sampler with 1/4 pound pulled chicken and 1/4 pound turkey slices, collard greens, cold slaw, baked beans, side salad with Italian dressing and a corn bread. The side salad dressing was potent, creamy would have been better. It's iceberg lettuce with shredded carrots and red cabbage. The cold slaw wasn't bad, creamy, my hubby liked it, so, it wasn't my favorite. The collard green wasn't bad, had big stewed tomatoes in it. Not a lot of flavors. The baked beans tasted good, had some small bits of brisket. The Texas Twang is my favorite sauce, maybe because it kind of reminds me of A-1 somewhat. Heather I am certain is what brings people back here, she's like a ray of sunshine in this BBQ joint. The place as a whole has a warmth of a sanctuary. Really cool concept to honor police and veterans. I will definitely want to take some family here! Love the outdoor seating. They are wooden unfinished benches. They also have black umbrellas and a full set of sauces at each table. We ordered the two meat sampler with chicken and brisket, the jalapeño cheese sausage, green beans, and fries. Good flavor and the meat was not dry like at a lot of barbecue restaurants around here. The corn bread is good too! I liked the green beans a lot because they were cooked in a bacon juice. The fries are fresh cut fries. I actually am giving this place 5 stars now because I go so frequently. It is because the restaurant atmosphere is so great. There is plenty of sunlight, the ceiling is high and open, the chairs including outdoor seating are awesome, everything is clean, and the music is happy. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the food was all very good with good sized portions. I had the brisket and baked beans and my nephew had the brisket sandwich and the mac and cheese. As we were enjoying our lunch, the wonderful cashier came to our table with complimentary bread puddings for us since it was our first visit. The pudding is really, really good!! I had been to Mission BBQ once before, in the DC area in late 2017, so I was pleased to see a new location open near me here in Troy. Today was my first time trying it out, I met a friend here for lunch. Small complaint: the employees were not rude, but they looked like they'd rather be anywhere else than working there. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and made it a combo, with cheesy potatoes and a drink. My total was $9.99 before tax, which is very reasonable. I had sweet tea for my drink, which was super sweet but very tasty. I tried all six of their BBQ sauces and liked most of them, with Bay-B-Q being my favorite. The sandwich was very good as were the cheesy potatoes. I didn't see any cornbread on the menu but that would be a welcome addition, if so. The restroom is a onesie and was surprisingly fancy ... I was impressed, anyways. Definitely would come back here - it's hard to find reasonably priced BBQ usually, and because this is more of a fast-casual place, you can get a meal for $10-12 or so here (and even cheaper if you don't want a side or a drink). Review based on two recent visits. First of all, the service is excellent. Staff are friendly and make polite conversation. They don't hesitate to give recommendations when asked about menu options. It's so refreshing compared to the average worker at other food establishments. Food was excellent on both visits. The large restaurant has an industrial vibe: long iron and wood picnic tables and benches line up across the concrete floor, corrugated aluminum roofing decorate the walls, inspirational words grace the walls, and emblems for military and first responders cover the walls. The line was short on a Sunday afternoon - by the time I placed my order and got my drink, the restaurant was almost done packaging the meal. I ordered the oak-smoked brisket, moist, please, and a side of baked beans. Unfortunately, the brisket was tough-to-swallow dry, as was the cornbread. The half yard-bird sampled was much better. Also unfortunate, the side salad came without the requested dressing - just little annoyances that spoiled the meal. Will there be a return visit? Absolutely! I love barbecue and more importantly, I appreciate the focus on the military and first responders. Barbecue is serious business in this town, and it all depends on what style you are looking for. I don't know that I have a style so much as how the meat is prepared and tastes. I wanted to check this place out since it's a reasonable distance from my home. Both times that I have been here, I have had a really good experience. For starters, their menu is great, not just a select few items. They have awesome sides, but right now I am hooked on the Macaroni and Cheese, which is amazing! I've gotten chopped brisket both times I have been here, and the portions are large and delicious. Even without me adding barbecue sauce at my table! The sauce just enhances how good the meat is. Plus, the service is really nice and they are super helpful with answering questions. I also have tried their BBQ sauces, and I liked almost all of them. The variety spans, but try all of them at least once. Trust me, their good! This place is better then a few others in the area that I have been too, and it's worth a trip to dine. Plus, seating is ample with tons of space to move about. Kitchen and serving counter area is extra large, so it's fun to watch the staff cook while you dine in. Overall, I love it here.
