This is my new go to place in MD when I'm traveling. I know Maryland is know for it's crab cakes and seafood, well you need to check this place out. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is very cool. I got the BBQ chicken sandwich, fries, and mac n cheese and was not disappointed. The portions were big enough to fill you up but not too big that you couldn't finish it. This place definitely honors our armed forces and police and firefighters as there is a ton of memorabilia on the walls and that Im a big fan of!! great food, great atmosphere that supports a great bunch of people. This was my first time there and I had no clue how anything worked. The lady at the counter helped me out and told me about the different sauces. I forget what we went with as it's been a bit but we didn't really like it. We prefer ours a bit sweeter. And no one in my house was a fan of the rolls. Went to Mission for the first time to celebrate my mother in laws birthday. She was craving some BBQ and we had wanted to try it out. We pulled up to the strip mall location. There was a line out the door on a Friday night. We crammed in the line and looked over their to the point menu. Ribs (spare and baby back), brisket, pulled pork and chicken, sausage, and some sides. The line moved quickly and I sent my wife to scout a table in the full restaurant. The ambiance was fine. Concrete floors, exposed ceiling. Some brick and wood. Two features stuck out. The restaurant is covered with military and first responder patches and memorabilia. Also the front door has carved and stained wood Maryland flag. Both features were cool and very fitting for Missions' values. We ordered Mac and cheese for the kids, pulled chicken for the MIL, babyback ribs for my wife, and a combo plate for me. We tried the coleslaw and green beans as sides. I was a little disappointed when the cashier tried to convince us to get it to go because we had not secured a table. I explained that we were there to celebrate a birthday and wanted to dine in. She obliged. The food came up quickly, just as wifey beat another table stalker to the table that just opened. Someone came from behind the counter to help run the food to our highly coveted real estate. The six of us crammed in a 4 top booth, which I capped with a free chair. The food was served on tin trays. I consolidated some of them to give us room. I guess they are primarily for getting the food from the counter to the seat. The food was amazing. My wife is a rib snob, but was pleased with the fall of the bone and Smokey meat. I loved the moist brisket and pulled pork with the creamy slaw. I am a slaw snob. I found it needing a little more seasoning and acid. But it was a solid 3 out of 5. The MIL enjoyed her chicken so much that she forgot to nag me about making a honest woman out of her daughter. We devoured the green beans with brisket ends. The kids liked their Mac and cheese. We were thankful that it wasn't something obviously from a box. I tried all the sauces. My favorites were the Texas Twang, Honey Heat, and Georgia Mustard. All were good sauces. Pick your favorite style and slather it up. The star of our visit was Charlie, a former Navy coreman. He visted our table several times to check on us, despite Miision BBQ being a counter service establishment. He apologized for the wait for a table. He offered to get us refills on any of our food items-- which we didn't need because the portions were generous. He told us a few stories from his time in the Navy and did a good job helping us to relax. Between the food and the service, we would be silly not to go back. Super friendly service and the bbq is legit! For $20 we had a meat platter with green beans and mac n cheese, strawberry shortcake, and two drinks (yummy sweet tea!). Excellent indeed. Also really enjoyed seeing their support of the Wounded Warrior Project and their overall clean (if somewhat chain-esque) aesthetic...kind of a BBQ spin on Chipotle. If you are looking for great brisket, your search is over. I just had an incredible brisket sandwich at Mission. And when I say incredible, I mean one of the best I ever had. I ordered mine "wet" and it was very moist and tender. Then, I had a lot of fun choosing one of the various sauces to go with it (although it would have gone down just as easy without). The only negative ... There is no Mission near my home in Vienna VA. So, for now, I can only fill my craving when I travel. I hope someone from Mission reads this and considers a new location in VA. After only 2 weeks in this area, I can say this is my favorite place to eat so far. The staff is courteous. The pulled pork is fantastic. The Mac is flavorful and like homemade. The green beans are flavored with bacon and tender. Nice selection of sauces for anyone's taste. I will say the brisket I had here in the past was fatty, and I prefer the pork:) I would recommend this place for BBQ. They also support the wounded warrior project. Thumbs up guys. This is not BBQ - it's more like Taco Bell is to Mexican food than anything else. Overall, would have to say the food here is barely edible. Sausage is insanely salty, fatty beef is dry as a bone, pulled pork was best of the bunch but needed the cole slaw to have enough moisture to make it work. Also got a couple of ribs - one St. Louis style and one Babyback. Smoked BBQ ribs have a deep but balanced combination of smoke and rub and do not simply fall off the bone - the texture needs to hang on the bone so you get a combination of bark, fat and meat in every bite. I tried to place a big party order and waited 20 minutes while the cashier waited on customer after customer while I tried to place this order! I didn't want to do it by phone because I wanted to see what things looked like. They just lost a big order because I'm so aggravated! This update October 5,2017 The area manager answered this complaint the next day and apologized profusely. He promised a gift card which after 2 weeks didn't show so I emailed again and after that I came home from work to find an envelope in my door which contained a $50 gift card (!!). Plus he enclosed a gift certificate for dinner for 10!!!!! This shows you everything about a company and their appreciation of their customers- thank you Eric for fixing the problems in spades! I have never received service this great at a fast food restaurant. And when I say fast food, they are fast! My entire experience, service wise, was perfect. All their employees seem eager to work, and they were all helpful. Restaurant is very clean and I like the chill atmosphere and open seating. Everything in the kitchen is visible and it was a nice experience. However, I am disappointed in the food. For the amazing reviews the food wasn't mind blowing. My brisket Sandwich, which I did get the lean version, was OK. The meat was tender and soft but loaded with salt. I don't know how you can enjoy it without bbq sauce. Good thing they got 7 to pick from. When it comes to sides, they were delicious. Loved the baked beans and corn bread was on point! Mission BBQ has several other menu options, like pulled pork, chicken, ribs, sausage and the turkey is to die for. Try the turkey with the Memphis Belle sauce. Wife had "moist cut" brisket, which was quite moist but I question how much time it had spent in a smoker. Not much of a smoke ring there. I go here almost every Friday. Good eats. Never had a bad server. Some (like Charlie) are even very interactive throughout the experience. They check in once or twice to make sure all is well, and often being out free samples. There are multiple TVs, often displaying sports and the news. The bathrooms are clean. The soft drinks, straws, spoons, forks and lids are easily accessible and organized. There is even iced tea and lemonade fresh. Free refills on unbottled drinks. At the table there is a container with 6 unique and uncommon sauces such as Smoky Mountain and Bay-b-q, but of course ketchup is available too. Waiters will greet you when you enter and take your trays when you're done. It's pretty fine here. I hope they get vegan options soon. Overall it's pretty great, friendly, and organized so why not give it a try. They're open all days of the week and they have free parking. Not only does Mission have excellent food, but also the best customer service you could ask for at a restaurant. As soon as you walk in, you're immediately greeted by half of the staff.
