Stopped here for lunch on my way home yesterday. It's an outdoor pit stand. It was only a couple people waiting for orders to be completed. There is no seating. I placed my order. I only got a pit turkey kids meal. It came with sandwich, fries and soda. It came to $9.80. There is a 3% charge if you pay by credit. Service was friendly and it took less than 10 minutes to receive my order. I added some old bay on my fries. It smelled delicious. I didn't even wait until I got home to eat it. I sat right in the parking lot , in my car and ate it. It was nice portions to be a kids meal. I finished everything but, my fries. Everything was delicious. My job had a holiday party and we ordered for 15 people. Over priced and no flavor!!! We received medium rare beef and lunch meat (turkey, cheese and ham), cold beans and three coops of potato salad. We thought that all of the meats were charcoal grilled!!! We received enough to feed about 8 to 10 people. We called the same day but were told that NOTHING could be done to correct the issues. I don't know why it's taken me so long to review Charcoal Grill. This is my local favorite and I think I'm here at least every other week. Their fries are the perfect boardwalk fry and in the summer the sandwiches are perfect to avoid cooking lol! This is the second time I've tried the fried dough and my son loved it. The Melba sauce was perfect! If you haven't been to Charcoal Grill this summer add it to your list!! Plus they have a points system and send coupons. I used to patronize the Charcoal Grill regularly. They had a fairly good pit beef sandwich. Then I found Bullseye's on Belair Rd (a couple of miles of extra driving, but the piled-high pit beef was worth it.) Now that Bullseye's has closed, I was forced to give Charcoal Grill another try after several years. Never again. $12 for a half inch of beef on a small, dry roll. That's NOT what a Baltimore pit beef sandwich is supposed to be. You guys need to do better. Total plunge in quality. You've seen the last of me. Sad. read more

I grew up in the area and was looking forward to a pit beef sandwich. I was taken back at the woman taking my order. I mean the personality of cardboard. Really made me think twice if I wanted to order food. I remember staff being so nice and asking if they could help. I ordered the value meal. I've been coming here for 20 years now with my family. Even when we moved from Parkville to Louisville of all places, we'd come back to the Charcoal Grill when we'd visit just to get a meal. It's really easy going, good, fried and open flamed food. Nothing gets better than that during a Ravens or O's game. Known as a local staple, I'd highly recommend the pit beef or honestly, the chicken tenders are the most underrated item in the menu. Kids menu is great too for a snack! Prices are still beyond fair considering the times we're in. They get you in and out in less than 10 minutes every single time for 20 years. It's also in the parking lot of a liquor store so there's a benefit/ conflict there. Benefit being, gameday is made easy, conflict is, no parking. But that's okay! Placed a rather large on-line order. The ordering process was impossible without the app. There was no place to indicate that I wanted to have all the sauces. With 6 sandwiches that shouldn't have been difficult. When we went to pick up the food the person taking the orders was rude and snarky. "We are going to charge you for all those extra sauces" is how I welcomed. What? I didn't order every sauce for every sandwich. 1/15/22-This place has went downhill. I foolishly ordered the 1/2 rack rib dinner. I knew I was in for disappointment when I felt the lightness of the bag( not even 10 0z is my guess) in which this fake rib dinner came in. Next I laughed at the fake mini prepackaged cornbread and the smallest 1/2 rack of ribs I've ever seen( Applebees' riblets would put these infant sized ribs to shame). I have been going there for 15 years and the food has always been very good. The wait for food is lightning quick and the service is fast and friendly. Mike is a real 5 star chef with the Pit Beef. The fries are really tasty and not greasy. I have to purchase the large order because I have to share them with my dogs. Everyone know that dogs love french fries. When I lived off Taylor ave I must have went here once a week to get a pit beef sandwich with onions and horseradish sauce and a side of fries. Now that I live in NoVa, its hard to make that happen. I will say this though. In the spring and summer the beef is a bit better I think because the smoker its cooked in can get hotter and give the meat a little more smoke and crispy ends. But year round its great to have a place to get real pit beef. Well in the 2 years since my review I moved. I had the opportunity to get my favorite wings again last night. Terrible...they wernt crispy the way the used to be. They looked raw then covered in sauce, they were hot so I started eating and gave up after 2-3 wings figuring id rather not take a chance. My wifes turkey sandwich was dry and bland. I assume because I put my order 20 minutes before close that this is an inconvenience for them. My $36 dollar order came without bbq but I requested bbq on all sandwiches except for one. Then the pit beef was on rye bread without request so I didn't eat it. Fries were missing from my order so I had to pay another $10. I just found them to be rude. If placing an order at 8:40 is a problem then they shouldn't have answered the phone. I walked away saying thank you for my wrong order while they have my $50. Terrible. After years of avoiding them because of the subpar experiences I should have continued to stay away. Their service is terrible especially knowing the food is not even all that. Such a cool BBQ. There's no sitting but the food is great. I just got the 1/2 slab of ribs entree which come with a corn muffin which was perfect for me. I have lived steps away from this place for almost 5 years - went there for the first time when I first moved here to get sandwiches for my moving crew (family and friends). Everything was only okay, nothing to write home about, which is why I never really had the urge to go back. Plus, I used to work at a pit beef/BBQ joint in Harford County when I was a kid so I know what a good pit beef sandwich should be. Having the urge recently for pit beef, I decided to give Charcoal Grill another chance. My pit beef sandwich was not delicious - the meat was overdone and dried out, not flavorful and not enough of it (although, I did order the smaller sized sandwich). The service was irritating - the young lady at the counter wasn't pleasant and never asked me how I'd like my meat cooked (where I worked when I was younger, we had rare, med rare, med well and well - customer's choice). I prefer my pit beef on the rare/med rare side but it appears that you don't get a choice when you order pit beef at Charcoal Grill. There's a Groupon available now (although it can't be used for another 8 days...what's up with that?) so I may buy it and try it again - this time for the pit turkey and maybe some ribs. The lemonade was good so if anything, I'll spend my Groupon on $20 worth of lemonade. read more

The pit beef is great. I think their longer cooked beef is even better than the rare. The edges are just burnt enough. My advice is pit beef cooked medium well. They do have this small issue with placing an order. You need to tell them exactly what you want. We have driven by many times and thought it was about time to give it a try. I had the Rib Dinner with the Hickory Smoke sauce- $15.99. it came with fries and a side. I got the MD Crab soup. THe soup was very good and so were the fries. The sauce was one of the better I have had. The ribs them selves were average- they we fatty and a bit dry and tough (I have had better ribs). My Husband had the Open-Pit beef sandwich. He had it with mayo and onions. It was very good. We both agree next time to try it with sauce.
