Let me preface this review by saying I've had myself some barbecue a time or two. I've eaten at legendary spots like Arthur Bryant's in Kansas City. I've had roadside barbecue off Texas highways. I've eaten at Arizona's own Eric's Family Barbecue. So yes, I have a point of reference. That said, this review isn't about comparing Mission BBQ to barbecue royalty. Doing so would miss the point entirely. Mission BBQ isn't trying to be Arthur Bryant's. Mission BBQ is trying to serve quality barbecue in an environment that celebrates the red, white, and blue. Mission: "How would you like your brisket? Original or moist?" Also Mission: "We'll put a boot in your ass. It's the American way." Between the military memorabilia, honoring local first responders, and the patriotic atmosphere, I was genuinely impressed with the experience. I especially appreciated the little details, like the natural wood throughout the restaurant and the Husky toolbox being used to hold straws, lids, and condiments. It sounds silly, but little touches like that add character. The employees have always been friendly, attentive, and incredibly kind to my children. They also earn bonus points from me for something only parents seem to notice--they have plenty of high chairs. Not one tucked in a corner. Not two hidden somewhere in the dining room. Like... six of them. It's a small detail, but it makes family dining so much easier. Now, the food. Mission BBQ is a step above Rudy's and comfortably ahead of Dickey's and Buc-ee's when it comes to barbecue. Is it legendary? No. But I don't think it's trying to be. For a brick-and-mortar chain, the barbecue is surprisingly solid. The moist brisket is easily my favorite, and I honestly haven't had a bad bite of meat here. The sides are respectable. The mac and cheese is good, though it can lean a little dry at times thanks to the breadcrumb topping. Still, everything feels thoughtfully prepared and consistently executed. My family and I will absolutely be back. It's reasonably priced, serves above-average barbecue, treats families well, and wraps the entire experience in unapologetic Americana. I've only had Mission BBQ catered by the Phoenix location, so it was a fun going in and seeing the new restaurant in Goodyear. The dining room is very clean and the drink area was well stocked. Each table had a large roll of paper towels and 6 BBQ sauces. The staff behind the counter were great and helpful as this was the first time we had been in. We tried the brisket sandwich and the 5 bone ribs. The brisket was really good, could do without the bun, but it may have been because it had hints of cornbread in it and my fiancée does not like cornbread. I finally tried Mission BBQ in Goodyear and came away a little disappointed. The good: they offer six different BBQ sauces, plus a seventh that's basically straight vinegar for those who like Carolina-style sauce. I appreciate the variety, and the staff was friendly. The BBQ beans were also very good and ended up being one of the highlights of the meal. The bad: for the price, the portions felt small. I understand BBQ isn't cheap, but I expected more value for what I paid. The pulled pork was the biggest letdown. It had very little flavor on its own. Honestly, I've made more flavorful pulled pork in a crock pot at home. The brisket was good, but I was hoping for a stronger smoke flavor. They ask whether you want lean or fatty brisket, which is basically asking if you want the flat or the point. If you're already serving the point, why not offer burnt ends too? The sausage was okay, but nothing memorable. The mac and cheese was surprisingly bland and didn't stand out at all. Then there's the cornbread. Why even offer a piece of cornbread if it's that tiny? It felt more like a sample than an actual side. My biggest criticism is that Mission BBQ seems to be trying to cover every style at once--Texas, Kansas City, Memphis, Carolina, and more. In my opinion, they're trying to do too much. I'd rather see them focus on doing one or two styles exceptionally well instead of trying to be everything to everyone. Overall, it wasn't bad BBQ, but for the price and the reputation, I expected more flavor, more smoke, larger portions, and a more focused menu. I'll probably keep looking for my go-to BBQ spot in the West Valley. read more

Really solid first impression at Mission BBQ! My friends and I went for dinner on a Friday evening around 7pm. The restaurant was busy but we had no issues getting a table. We don't eat BBQ frequently & were excited when this place was announced. The restaurant is counter service, so you order your food at the counter, find a table, and they call your name when it's ready. The employee taking our order was very helpful. He explained the menu and answered our questions. The food was ready extremely quickly! I'd say we were waiting no longer 5 minutes. It was all hot & fresh. We each got a Meat Sampler plate with 2-3 meats. We also upgraded to combos for the sides & drink. The 3 meat sampler & XXL combo (which comes with 2 sides) is going to set you back about $30. This sounds like a lot, but for me it was so worth it. I got the Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Jalapeño & Cheese Sausage. For sides I got the Fresh Cut Fries and the Mac-N-Cheese. Our group also tried the Collard Greens, Green Beans, and Blueberry Cobbler. All the food was excellent. My favorite meats were the brisket and the pulled pork. I probably wouldn't get the sausage again - just wasn't for me. For the Brisket you can choose either moist or lean cuts. The moist is more fatty, but so flavorful. All the sides were delicious. The only side which received slight criticism were the Collard Greens - reportedly under-seasoned. The fries are excellent, especially if you get them seasoned! Portion size is very good. The photos look deceiving because of the trays, but there is a lot of food. No one in our group left hungry. The customer service was probably some of the best I've experienced for a counter-service restaurant. Throughout the entire meal, staff checked up on us, seeing if needed anything, even bringing us samples to try of other menu items. Everyone was friendly and seemed genuinely happy to be there. This place is great and supports these organizations, the military, firefighters, and police. It was our first time there and the cashier was friendly, helpful, and patient. The dining room was nice and cold since it was 110 outside. Once our ofer was ready they call out our name and we come pick up at the counter. They hired staff who make you feel welcome, as if you have walked into a special space and they're glad you get to enjoy it with them. We stopped by on our way to the movies, my husband, daughter, and her stepsister. I ordered a small portion of baby back ribs and a side of macaroni and cheese, à la cart. I was told that this was a kid's meal, basically. Although it wasn't much, it certainly was filling. My husband ordered the sausage, also à la carte, and my daughter ordered brisket and ribs and a side of macaroni and cheese and her stepsister ordered two meats (I don't remember which) and greens. Everything comes out on the same large tray that seems to dwarf your meal, but all walked away with full bellies - as was evidenced by the fact that nobody felt like ordering popcorn when we got to the movie theater. The fun part was sampling the different sauces. There's like six of them. We tried to do taste tests on all of them but we got confused. Here's a tip: bring a pen so you mark down on your parchment paper which is which. I've only dropped a star because in the world of Goodyear adjacent BBQ, I gotta give it to Rudy's because I think they give you a slightly larger portion for the amount that we paid. And their moist brisket is moister. But, Mission has a much better selection of sodas and interesting sides. Do check it out yourself. They have a nice concept and, as stated, nice people. read more

Outstanding every time. The moist brisket, pulled pork, and jalepeño-cheddar sausage are fantastic. The moist brisket falls apart without chewing, the crust is deliciously salty, and the flavor is hearty. All of their sauces are good, especially their special mustard. I could put it on anything. It's also fun to have 6 different bbq sauces to play around with. The green beans and collard greens are served hot and savory. Each entree comes with a chunk of corn bread which is a little sweet and a little salty. I don't really eat it but it would be easy to eat a lot of it if I let myself. Staff are always friendly. Atmosphere is rustic and comfortable. Portions are decent - it's a little on the pricey side if you like to eat a lot, however it's 100% worth it. I'll never go anywhere else for bbq if I'm within about 30 minutes of a Mission. The quality is the same at their Goodyear and Surprise locations. I have yet to try their Phoenix spot. I ordered almost 400$ worth of food to cater my son's bday party yesterday. I came in to pick it up and was polite as can be. By the way, it was not busy and there was no line so I can't see employees being stressed out at the time. Now, I've been to the one in Surprise, and the one in Sarasota, FL, and the workers especially in FL, were the nicest, friendliest, people as can be. Especially if you're a public servant or first responder. However at this location, none of the workers seemed happy and the guy who rang me up, who appeared to be the manager, was rude. I can see why the atmosphere is the way it is. There was no "hi", no "hello", no "thank you." I'm a firm believer in service and making customers want to return. And after this, I will not be returning! Nothing but dirty looks and vibes of me not being welcome. What did I do to you, buddy except spend a lot of money there. Also, I saw my order come with a small container of pickles. Instead of putting it in my take - out bag with the rest of the items, he took it upon himself to throw it in the trashcan in front of me without even asking if I wanted it. The inside displays lots of memorabilia of veterans which is nice to see and seating is very typical of a BBQ restaurant. Very comfortable. You order your food at the counter and pick it up at the counter however the staff still comes and checks on you. They were very friendly and welcoming. They offered to refill our drinks, gave us container to box our left overs, and picked up the empty trays. Now let's talk about the food. We tried a little bit of everything. Baby back ribs had just the perfect amount of Smokey flavor. They were fall off the bone and come with a dry rub, they were delicious. The brisket is perfectly tender and juicy. Pulled pork was very good. Jalapeño cheddar sausages are to die for. Sides were equally delicious. If you love Mac n cheese, Mission BBQ has the best I have ever had. Collard greens were also amazing. They were tender and had the perfect amount of heat that made them so flavorful. BBQ beans have tender pieces of brisket in them and have such a nice sweet flavor. The coleslaw was fresh and crisp. Very refreshing. If you are BBQ sauce type of person, don't worry they have six different types for you to try. They were all very good. This place is a must try! The ingredients ingredients were reasonably fresh and there were six different barbecue sauces to choose from on the day. I was there they gave out free french fries and also interrupted the lunch to have everyone stand up and sing America, the beautiful while saluting or putting their hand on their heart while looking at a flag on a television, judging from the displays around the restaurant, it seems that they were paying tribute to people that served in the armed services. The BBQ Brisket was great. Maybe a little to bit chopped up (diced or something) but that did not alter the flavor. They have 6 distinct sauces. I tried them all, and I thought they all were good. Two of them I settled on though as they were to me the best. Be sure to taste them all the sides were simple, it was only I dining. Corn bread that I thought was great. And Cole Slaw, which surprised me as to how good it was. Iced tea, was good, and refillable. So order the small cup. No one will hassle you. Service was quick, and attentive, and very friendly. They do like Veterans in particular and have a program for them. I'll check it out next time. Well good luck. I know I will return and go for their mixed meat plate.
