Alright most importantly - The water cups are DISGUSTING. There was black gunk floating all around.. Geezus. I didn't notice it until after I already started drinking it. I thought maybe it was just my cup, or maybe my own vile backwash. But no. My husband's water was untouched, yet we still saw all the black gunk in there. Please see the picture I post of it. Gross. Ok so the food. We ordered takoyaki, beef Katsu, pork Katsu, spicy tonkotsu ramen, and seafood mixed rice (hwedeopbap). The takoyaki was so good and creamy, I highly recommend it. The katsu was the standard kind you can find anywhere really. But what makes them special is that they have a variety of it. The ramen was not your typical Japanese style ramen, it tasted very Korean, like typical Korean flavors. If you want Japanese style ramen, don't expect it here. It was still good, but just different. (PS - I prefer the Japanese style to this one) read more

**Food = 3.5 stars, the boost of .5 is for friendly service!** My friend finally took me to one of his favorite spots in Annandale after having to cancel the first two times. I really wanted to like this place, but it just didn't leave an impression on me. Entrees are affordable and food seemed standard, some type of katsu with rice, meat with rice, or udon noodles. We came here on a weekday for dinner, I ordered the pork katsu & udon noodle platter and my friend ordered the sashimi bibim. The menu items are budget friendly and you even get free ice cream after your meal! I would like to come back and try the sashimi bibim, which looked really appetizing and to give this place another shot. Other than that, there's not much else pulling me back here. read more

My hands down favorite place for tonkatsu in the DMV area. The lunch prices can't be beat for the less than $10 you get broth, salad, steamed egg, and a generous portion of whatever entree or combo of entrees you choose. The variety is endless, there are pages of every combination of noodle, katsu, sushi rice, you could think of! The dinner prices are also affordable for the amount of katsu you get! read more

3.5 We've been wanting to try a place with udon since our trip to Japan. This place was ok. Most of our group got a combo with udon and a protein. The pork cutlet was pretty tasty and I liked it with both the dipping sauce and with the salad and dressing. The udon was also ok for me. I wouldn't necessarily seek it out again. I thought the price was fair for the amount of food. Was a little disappointed in the service - it was two guys who were quick to greet but then after that you had to grab them for anything. The table settings were also really haphazard. Does it matter? I guess not but it shows the level of care for the restaurant. Also they ran out of ice cream. read more

One of the best katsu places I've been to, so far. They offer appetizers such as seafood okonomiyaki, takoyaki, which is hard to find at other Japanese restaurants, but this restaurant gets it right. The majority of the menu centers on the various types of katsu, such as spicy pork, chicken, flounder, shrimp, lobsters, etc., along with a choice of side dish. You can order a katsu combination with a small side dish (like a mini udon soup) or you can order the combo with larger side dishes, such as caviar rice or a large udon soup. The portions are well worth the money, since you get TWO perfectly fried, sliced pieces of your choice of meat, along with a small scoop of potato salad, rice, salad, and a few small dishes of Korean banchan (kimchi, pickled radish, pickled salad). I must warn you: make sure you come when you're hungry. Before you start the meal, they offer a warm egg custard sprinkled with some crab (or shrimp) meat, along with a salad with ginger dressing. After the meal, if you still have room for it, you'll get a choice of ice cream of yogurt. Also, don't be afraid to bring the kids! This place is kid-friendly & they've got a kid's menu to choose from too. The only difference is that the katsu combo comes with 1 meat as opposed to 2. For the crazy amount of food you get, the prices are really good. Most of the katsu combo dishes range from $12+ and the kid's combo is $8+. They also offer donburi bowls, but we didn't get that, so that's something to try next time. Lots of choices on the menu, so I'm going back to try something new on our next visit. If you go at a busy time, make sure you flag one of the many servers down for refills or the check, since they might overlook your table. read more

We found this place through yelp and saw that it had great reviews so we wanted to check it out. Since this place is a Japanese restaurant, I immediately thought that they would serve sushi but they don't. They are more known for their katsu and ramen. Since I read so many great things about their katsu and ramen, I decided to give them a try. I ordered the chicken katsu and the ramen combo. I am so glad that I tried it! The chicken katsu was the perfect amount of crispness and moisture. I also got to try a bit of the pork katsu. They taste very similar but the chicken katsu was lighter and not as dense as the pork katsu. I liked the chicken katsu more than the pork katsu. The ramen was cooked perfectly as well. The noodles were cooked aldante which gave it nice texture and the flavor was delicious. When you order the combo though, the ramen doesn't come with the egg. I didn't need it but just good to know because I thought they forgot to put it in. The service was great and the atmosphere was nice. I will definitely be coming back. I'm even craving some of this now since I am writing this review. read more

Well. I'm sitting here in my booth feeling so strongly about my dinner that I'm going to write a quick review. Service was ok. For an Annandale restaurant, I'd even say it was pretty good. Let's see...what else...the server was friendly. But unfortunately that's where the compliments end. Our Okonomiyaki was obviously a tiny Korean seafood pancake masked with mayo and bonito flakes. And the ramen...sigh. It was sad. I mean, I was so hungry coming into the restaurant that I probably would have raved about average quality food. But man, they unfortunately tried faking their way through an entree that's famous for requiring many hours of masterful preparation. My broth was flavorless (I mean...it was bad...I had to add table salt!) and quite obviously made from some instant "flavoring" and stirred together just prior to serving. I only got half of a fully hard boiled egg, and the pork belly was obviously quick boiled vs. braised. The pork was so chewy it was actually crunchy. Tsk tsk. And what else? I ordered a tonkatsu ramen and there was no tonkatsu in sight. I recall from my two previous visits that their other foods were relatively decent. But that's also probably because it's infinitely easier to fry up a piece of pork and make a bowl of tasty instant udon, rather than try to serve Japanese ramen. Worst part of it all was the $39 tab at the end of the meal and watching them take away my wife's bowl from which she barely took 4 bites before she couldn't take anymore. Ouch. Probably won't be back for a while...if at all... And please heed my advice and steer clear of the ramen. read more

I know, it's not Japanese, it's Korean. Yet, they do such a good job at the Japanese food that they make. For a person always looking for that authentic Japanese taste, I'm very impressed. I came here the first time as part of a birthday group. Despite us being such a mess, the servers were so patient and good to us. They even dimmed the lights so that they could sing Happy Birthday and present the birthday girl with a small pastry. They split the checks even though we were a large party, and I honestly wouldn't have faulted them if they'd said they didn't want to do it. I was impressed enough to bring my husband on a different occasion, and he too really likes this place. The prices are great, maybe $8-12 for combination sets. I like to order their curry, udon, katsu, or combination of the three. Their katsu is out of this world good, and the only kind I can get as good is all the way in NY. It's really cute that desert (yogurto or an ice cream cone) is included with every meal. It's really easy to get to, and there is plenty of parking. read more

Love this place! I forget the names of everything, but the shrimp wrapped in potato thing was really delicious! The katsus were crispy and well cooked and the udon has good flavor. The ramen was probably the only thing I wouldn't recommend, it was a bit flavorless and boring. Oh and the egg appetizer was a great start to our meal! read more

We've been coming here for quite some time now and love it here. Our favorite is the shrimp and soft shell crab Kathy and the shrimp and flounder katsu (with udon) Yum, not too oily, plenty of food and both dishes for less than 30 bucks. Great ambience, great service, and good portions. For starters, you get a steamed egg and a mini salad. Shortly after your main meal arrives. For dessert, you get a choice of ice cream or yogurt drink (complimentary). read more

I went to Miso and it reminded me of the Japanese restaurants back home in Jersey. There's a lot of Chinese and Japanese restaurants owned by Koreans so I felt the same when I heard the waiters speaking in korean. The interior of the restaurant was cozy. I ordered takoyaki and the chicken marsh. To be honest, the takoyaki was just alright. The breading was a bit mushy and not crisp and the octopus and sauce weren't superb or anything of the like. The chicken katsu wasn't cooked crisp either. The food here was decent but nothing that left a impression for me to come back. read more

This is probably one of my favorite places to eat in Annandale. Who would have thought you could get really good Japanese tonkatsu in the middle of K-town? For about $13, you can basically get a three course meal which is a pretty solid deal! All the entrees come with a starter small salad with steamed egg custard. For your entree, I recommend getting the pork katsu (with mini udong, if you want rice with your meal) If you'd rather not get rice, then go for the pork katsu with regular size udon. Either way, GET THE KATSU. I haven't tried the sushi here, but honestly there's no need to. The katsu is perfectly portioned, perfectly crispy, and not greasy at all. The katsu sauce tastes amazing with it, and I like to alternate dipping the pork slices in that and eating it with the udon (which is also pretty decent, but plays a mere supporting role for the pork). Finally for dessert, you get a choice between vanilla ice cream cone, yogurt drink, or coffee. Always go with ice cream. read more

Very large portions with REALLY cute waiters... price was pretty cheap for lunch and came with a lot. I remember a lunch special being under $10 and you could get a large bowl of ramen (Korean-style) and bibimbop. Both came with side dishes. Seafood ramen by itself was something like $12, and they have takoyaki!! Very big plus for me since there aren't a lot of places that serve it. They also give you chawanmushi as a free appetizer with your food; I think they served salad too, but I can't remember, as it's been over a year since I last went. I originally went for their ramen, which wasn't authentic as I had hoped (thought it was Japanese-style but it was just Korean), so I was a little disappointed. I might go back. read more

Always good on a cold day. This place offers such a unique combination of dishes! You basically pick and create your own big combo! And of course they all come with a bowl of their yummy miso soup. With every meal comes with this little salad and steamed egg. And at the end of your meal they will offer a free dessert of either coffee, yogurt drink, or a cute little icecream cone. I've been here countless times and it just never gets old, always something new to try and you have the flexibility of getting exactly what you like with your food. If you like to have a variety of food during your meal, then this is the place for you! They let you pick different items from their menu and mix and match. You can get a tonkatsu and bibimbap or tonkatsu and udon. So many choices to pick from that it's nearly impossible. Everything is so good though. Their portion sizes are huge and they give you a lot of sides like steamed eggs, salad, and etc. Make sure you ask for your ice cream that is included in your meal at the end. So good. You can choose from ice cream or coffee. read more

Personally, I'm a fan of this place because I love fusion restaurants. Besides the fact that it's walking distance from my house, I love Miso because they offer quality food and generous portions for a great price. If you order an entree you basically order a mini banquet, as it comes with soup and salad, as well as a dessert at the end (ice cream, yakult, or coffee). Not to mention their katsu here is perfectly breaded- it's nice and crispy without feeling heavy. You also have the option of choosing your own combo meal (i.e. katsu with udon, ramen, caviar rice etc.). Their udon, even just as a side, is flavorful and plenty. They also provide other mini sides such as kimchi, potato salad, pickled radish, etc. Their takoyaki, a Japanese street food that is an octopus + breading stuffed ball, is delicious- it has a creamy texture packed with chunks of octopus. Their teriyaki while good, was nothing special. It was lightly breaded and very filling. They also have shrimp tempura, bibimbap, seafood pancake, and other tasty Japanese and Korean dishes. The place has plenty of seating and dim lighting. And although it's not very big, they can accommodate for groups. And because it's located in the shopping center on Little River Turnpike, there is plenty of parking spots. Come here for the katsu + udon combo and you'll go home more than satisfied! read more

They've always had really good specials throughout the day and I was very excited to find out that they are open for late nights now . The menu is little different for the night but you can pretty much get anything that you would get here at miso. It's never too busy during the night and it's just nice to come by with friends to get some drink and have small bites. I very much enjoyed my 2 visits here. I've gotten the seafood bimbimbap combo (that comes with pork). For about $15 this combo comes with side dishes and free ice cream dessert! Miso is definitely one of my favorite places to eat in Annandale! Love their variety of combo meals! Called ahead to make a dinner reservation for a party of 8 and it worked out perfectly. Casual, dimly lit cafe modern atmosphere, perfect for a place to grab lunch/dinner with friends if you're in the area. Known for their donkatsu and udon noodle soup! Average price for a meal was between $13-16. They have almost every combo that you can think of (meat lover, fish, curry, sashimi bowl rice, etc.) Friendly and fast service. Always around/available to clear your table and ask for assistance. Considering how busy they were/our party size, our food came out fairly quick so I really loved/appreciated that! Our appetizer of a small cup of steamed egg and salad was a perfect way to work up our appetite. Our main entree came out very shortly. The meal tray setup was super cute and neat. It comes with mini side dishes of kimchi, yellow pickled radish and donkatsu sauce. The donkatsu also comes with a side of coleslaw salad. I ordered the donkatsu stuffed with mozzarella cheese, chicken and jalepeno peppers. It looks like a donkatsu roll. It also came with a mini udon. Perfect combo! Everyone in our group really enjoyed their meal! They offer you dessert as well at the end :) They also offer 5% discount off your bill if you pay with cash! read more

I don't know if I'm such a critic because my mother is a chef, but I used to rave about this place when I went a few years ago.. and now, it's just not the same anymore. The quality of the food has gone down dramatically, and the service has gone down as well. Which, in my opinion, is a restaurants' biggest downfall. Pros: the menu is very affordable and has great "you-pick-two" fusion options which I really like; the food comes out quickly (usually); the menu is very diverse and has some great options for you to choose (such as bibimbap, udon, and bulgogi) Cons: service personnel are not very attentive; and most importantly my dessert (a Korean pastry in the shape of a fish) TOOK 40 MINUTES TO COME OUT!!???! It's basically a Korean version of a waffle... and it took forty minutes to make?! There are no words to describe how angry I was when I left. Had I have had to been somewhere within a reasonable amount of time, I most definitely would have been FUMING when I left. 40 minutes for ANYTHING at ANY restaurant is absolutely unacceptable. Other than my dessert taking 40 minutes to come out, I would definitely come back once I have had a chance to calm down a bit (which is why this rating is a 3 instead of a 2). read more

Tonkatsu is one of those things that's so simple but needs to be done correctly. I've had so many iterations that were over fried, resulting in a sad, dry slice of pork. At Miso, the tonkatsu is sure to be crispy and juicy. For what you pay for, Miso is definitely generous: soup, sides, and two slices of pork cutlet! In addition, you end your meal with either yakult or a small ice cream cone. (I'm typically too full to opt for the ice cream cone however) While Miso isn't your fancy Japanese cuisine, it's hit the mark of comfort food; simple but still satisfying. read more

I didn't think I would find a place like this in the middle of Koreatown, VA but what a great find! Like all the other places in Annandale, their décor is severely lacking. It's as if all of Annandale was frozen in the 80s and nothing has changed since. One thing I do appreciate about their space is that tables are spread apart so you and your party can feel somewhat isolated and intimate. This place isn't bumping by any means, but I don't think they're trying to be. They take their katsu seriously and it shows. It's hard to mess up katsu but it's also hard to make really good katsu, but this place in my humble opinion makes great katsu. It even comes out on top of that mini-pseudo-grill to allow for max freshness and to not allow the katsu to get soggy. The crispy skin didn't fall off the katsu when you bit into it. I love that you can pair any katsu with a plethora of other dishes. I got my chicken katsu with fish egg rice bowl. Truthfully, the rice bowl was not good (not horrendous) but I'll probably get udon or something else next time. The fact is, you have many options to choose from. Obviously I wish the katsu portion was bigger, but that's only because I thought it was so good. I think the amount they give is enough. If you're looking for solid katsu, come here. read more

Food: it was good. We like the fact they offer little salad and egg for appetizer. Also, for desert they have ice cream or yogurt drink for free. I got spicy ramen and chicken katsu. It pretty good. Ramen was enough favor, noodle is just right not over cook. Chicken was fries and crunchy. Nice little sour sauce to deep in. Service: Terrible!! Terrible!!!! They never refill our water. We have to asked for few times. They never check up on us even one time, they constantly walked back and forth but not even a look. Other table when the customers done, they come take the dishes away and offer desert. When they bring desert out they also bring the check out. With our table, they never did that. We have to called them for a check then they offer desert. We came in 3 people, they only took 2 dishes away. When they came with dessert, they still didn't take the last remind dishes away. It's not like we didn't finish it. We all finish our food in the same time and we wait for almost 30mins to see if they would come and get the dishes away but they didn't. I sit and eat desert on top of my finish tray, I was so mad. They walk by so many times and still can pick up my dishes. It's not like they bring water and we drink it all, we were there for over an hour abs still got no refilling water unless we asked. If I could grade the service I would give 0/5. It was my first time here. If Yelp would allow me to rate this with a .5, I'd say this is a 3.5 star place. I will go back, since their tonkatsu is legit. It is not the best We have tried (Saboten, which we do not have here) still holds the standard. However, for an area that does not have a lot of good options for Japanese fare, Miso has a fairly delicious tonkatsu. It is tender and stays crispy. I got the tonkatsu ramen combo. I only give this place 3.5 because the ramen is not good, it is not authentic. My husband said that his udon was ok, nothing great and tasted like instant noodles. Tonkatsu is the obvious thing to get here. I like the pork and the fish. The shrimp isn't bad but the portion (I thought) was small. They menu appears to slimmed down due to Covid ; no more beef or soft shell crab. The spicy pork to me wasn't worth the extra $. read more

This place is honestly the best katsu place around. I've been here quite a few times now, and I have left satisfied every time with their katsu. The crispy exterior paired with the tender and juicy interior of the katsu is rather impressive. I usually just get a combination of pork katsu with their ramen or udon when I come here, and it is always solid. But on my last visit, I tried their all you can eat menu for the first time after a friend had mentioned it. My girlfriend and I got option A which is the smaller menu for $22, but pretty much already had everything we wanted (there is a larger option B for $26). Some quick things to note about the all you can eat menu if you decide to go for it: 1.) You won't be given the all you can eat menu unless you inquire about it, but our server was more than happy to provide us with the menu when I asked. So don't be shy and ask :) 2.) The menu is only available during certain hours. Monday through Thursday it is available starting at 5:00 PM and goes until 10:00 PM. Friday and Saturday it goes from 5:00 PM to 10:30 PM. 3.) The portion sizes per order is nothing to laugh at. I was thinking that it would be like any other all you can eat place, and thought it might be a lot of small, sample-sized stuff per order. However, I ordered 2 pork katsu, 1 chicken katsu, a miso ramen for myself, and a kimchi udon for my girlfriend to start...we definitely were not expecting how much food we got. The katsus were full-sized, and even our bowls of ramen/udon were pretty sizeable. I mention the sizes because each person at the table will be charged $5 for any leftovers so definitely start small, and ask for more as you go! I had a phenomenal experience, and definitely plan to continue coming here. read more

Miso is yums! I actually came here when it first opened up and that was years ago. I still come here to this day and every time I come I always enjoy my meal! I usually get the hirae Katsu (fried pork cutlet) combo with hwedupbap (fish sashimi cubes on top of rice with veggies and spicy sauce.) After the waiter takes your order, you get an appetizer (for free) which is a glass cup with steamed egg inside and a side salad. The portion is extremely small, but it's better that way bc the main meal will have you stuffed! Oh speaking of appetizers, the mussels are amazeballs! I get those once in a while, but they never fail me bahaha. They tend to be a bit on the spicier side since they come with a jalapeño on top but you could easily take that off. I got the sausage Katsu once and it was really meh to me. The udon here is good too! You can get it as a combo with the cutlets so that way you can get your noodle and protein lol. After your entree they sometimes give you ice cream, but if not ice cream that day you can always choose between coffee or a Korean yogurt drink. Yay for free dessert! read more
