I don't think I'm THAT cheap, but this store is pretty expensive. The super cute dress that you're about to be in love with? Check the price. The only ones that are not expensive are the crappy ones, and they don't have a very wide range of sizes either. Most of the small sizes were out when I went. Maybe go here and buy some accessories as a gift. The staff are really nice, and it's good to just stroll through, maybe you'll find a bargain. read more

I 've been to mint julep four times and each experience has been very unpleasant.. 1. The first three times I went NO ONE helped me and it was not busy. There was only one other person there at the checkout and then another lady came in and she was immediately helped and was told about the sales rack and how she could take an additonal 30% off--which was the same rack I was actually browsing through. 2. I found the sales person snooty towards me on three of the four visits. She kept reminding me of how the expensive the clothes were here, which was a major turnoff. 3. Usually this kind of stuff does not bother me but I came in the fourth time wearing my BC sweatpants. One of the owners (i'm assuming because she went on to talk about how well educated her BU girls were--how they were always put toghether and helpful) was completely rude but there was a really nice and tall slales girl who was extremely helpful. The service, in my opinion was horrible but I have a feeling it would not be this way if I were a white woman. The selection is okay, I've never really seen anything in there that is worth the price--although they do have a wonderful selection of tano bags and some really cute jewelry near the counter but again, nothing special if you consider you are a stones throw from jasmine sola. Nothing progressive about the selection. ****UPDATE*****(December 30, 2006) After posting this complaint, One of the owners emailed me and apologized for whatever created my bad experience in her store and offered to rectify the situation ASAP. Mint Julep used to be one of my favorite boutiques to visit in Boston, but each time I go back I like it a little less. It's in such a small space, and is absolutely packed full of stuff, so it can be stressful to move around and browse how you'd like to (especially on a weekend). If you can handle the congested space, though, my take on Mint Julep is that it's basically hit or miss. The jewelry is usually pretty cute -- I have bought a few pairs of earrings there over the years -- though I didn't have any luck on my last visit. I once found a great pair of corduroy pants in the sale bin for like $30, but haven't been as lucky since. Unfortunately, a lot of the clothing lines (Velvet, Ella Moss, etc.) can be found at department stores these days, which takes away a little from the boutique feel, but I'll probably continue to stop in when I'm hanging around Coolidge Corner or Harvard Square. read more

stepping into mint julep is like a kid in a candy store experience for the girl-y girl. the small boutique is filled with cute accessories, dresses, and basic pieces. sure, you can find the same designers at other stores but you won't find the same buyers. skip walking up and down newbury and come here first. it's hard to NOT find at least one (but most likely a few) items you absolutely must have...you won't necessarily be able to afford it...but you'll find it :) the price points may be more splurge than everyday but if you wait for a sale or search extra hard you should be able to satisfy your cute craving. mint julep gets bonus points for carrying small local designers along with the bigger LA brands. last time i stepped in, i spotted some cute headbands from pistachio, a local designer that i fell in love with at a shecky's gno event. read more

Mint Julep is a dainty little boutique in Coolidge Corner. They have great designers and cute, fun, clothes. They also carry a decent selection of designer jeans, including Joe's Jeans Provacateur Heart, which is made just for petite frames! As a loyal customer of the Cambridge location I was eager to pop into the CC location which is actually right by where I live. I was so disappointed. Maybe I had my hopes up too high, but I much prefer the Harvard Sq store. The store was dark and the staff was not friendly at all. I don't think I got a hello the entire time I was there. At the Harvard Sq store you get a huge "Hello!" with a smile when you walk in. The CC location suffers from the same space constraints as Harvard Sq but for some reason is less manageable. There were a few people in there and it was difficult to walk around...I had to leave my husband in the corner and say "stay" while I searched. (I really don't like having to treat my husband that way...) The selection was just ok, much better selection (and better size runs) in Harvard Sq. Prices are prices...you will pay the same for an Ella Moss dress at Mint Julep as you will at Jasmine Sola as you will at ShopBop or Bloomy's. I don't understand complaining about MSRP, that's just silly. Needless to say it was a very frustrating experience. My husband and I left and got in the car and drove right up the street to Velvet Ribbon where I found the perfect dress and received fantastic service. (Again.) read more

Lovely little unpretentious boutique! Much smaller than it's Harvard Square sister, the place still packs a lot of punch with Free People, Citizen's, Joe's Jeans, etc. and more than enough handmade jewelry and accessories to oogle. The girls are always friendly and helpful, but will leave you alone to browse as you please. However because its so small, it can feel weird to not chat or to really get lost browsing for hours. Sometimes I get really indecisive with clothes, and will spend a good 30 minutes in the dressing room with only one pair of jeans, which gets uncomfortable when you don't sort of disappear into the background. Apparently they only carry sizes 0-8. If you're anything more than that they raise an eyebrow and ramble on about how these are the sizes that sell and they only stock 1-2 pieces of each size and how the designer only makes limited sizes....Not that that is the exact antithesis of the Shoshanna brand ethos (which they carry) of designing for different body types. Mint Julep is a great place to stop in for ideas, and their selection is so fun. Their accessories are adorable. But I don't always enjoy the sensation of falling madly in love with a dress only to find out that it's mysteriously overpriced. It does look like a Newbury or Charles St. boutique...but it's in friendly, casual Coolidge Corner, so it's a jolt to come from the thrill of bargain book-shopping in Brookline Booksmith to the posh sticker shock of Mint Julep. However, it is a nice treat after walking past the matronly clothing and plus-size stores on Harvard and Beacon Streets. read more

Really disappointed. I bought a tunic in October to wear for holiday parties. Time to wear it and I'm ironing it. I find that it's incredibly badly made: the darts were crinkled and impossible to iron flat, the seams reverse direction and are impossible to iron flat. Of course, it's too late to return because they have a 10-day return policy. That just tells me that they're not willing to stand by their merchandise. The tunic I bought was expensive to buy and cheaply made. I will not be shopping here again. It's just not worth it. read more

I love to shop here for special occasion outfits in particular. I don't go in that often (no matter what I tell myself when walking over the threshold, I always buy something). Yes, it costs more than the Gap. You also get something that you won't see on every other girl walking down the street. I love the original pieces they have. I feel like everything in the store was hand-picked for my viewing pleasure. My two favorite purchases from MJ are a black cocktail dress and a black knee-length skirt with tiny white polka dots. They are great classic pieces and in the long run, cheaper than a less expensive version because they will last longer! The ladies working are usually friendly and helpful (they were especially so during my dress-buying trip, suggesting things that would look good, running into the back to get different sizes). In fact, the dress that I ended up getting I would have NEVER pulled from the rack on my own. I tried it on their suggestion. Yay, girls who are good at their job! read more

When I feel the need to splurge, this is the first place that comes to mind. It's a pricey boutique, but you can find cute trendy clothes and some hip classic pieces depending on what you're in the mood for. I like their t-shirts because they go way beyond plain solid colors. Awesome selection of jeans, too. One of the biggest draws is the jewelry. Check back often to see what's on sale. I've found some really good deals. I wish my income would let me shop here more often. The inventory is eclectic and everchanging. They have a great selection of cute accessories. The staff is always helpful and friendly. I like to go in often and browse. Sometimes I'm lucky to walk out with cute earrings or a good find sale item; other times I am sad that the super adorable dress that I won't let myself try on (in case I love it too much) is just so pricey. One thing they could work on though, is getting use to their new security system. They started attaching sensors to the clothes and I almost walked out with a sensor on my new cute little top because someone had put two sensors on there. My friend recently also purchased something there and left with the sensor on her item because it didn't even set off the alarm. read more

A super cute boutique in Coolidge corner. They carry the same designers that you'd find at high end department stores like Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom. I found a dress I loved that was priced the same at Nordstrom, so i decided to support a small business instead for once. Really nice salespeople and a very clean store despite its small size. They have sidewalk sales once a year for all those that mentioned the steep prices. Love coming back here and finding cute dresses and tops on sale! read more

as far as boutiques go, i think this place is the best in boston, and i am a boutique-addicted shopper. they carry quality basics in great cuts, really unique outerwear, excellent cashmere in unique colors, and their accessories range in price from very affordable (adorable found-art necklaces for $20) to total splurges (big gemstone necklaces with vintage clasps for $180). if they don't have your size on the rack, ask for help - they keep duplicates of stuff in the basement, just like they do at most boutiques. mint julep also isn't so uber trendy, so you can still find things like long, bootleg jeans even though tight anks are all the rage. and for the whiners, don't go to a boutique if you only like to spend 15 bucks, girlies! i don't understand people who complain about the prices of designer clothes. designer clothes are more expensive. go to old navy if you're not into it. i think it's kind of crappy to write a bad review about a small, female-owned business that actually treats its customers with respect just b/c you're not into what they sell. read more

After purchasing the occasional necklace or pair of earring in the past, I recently went in on a lark to torture myself by ogling things I can't afford right now. Cut to 30 minutes later and I am the proud owner of a new fall jacket. Not sure how it happened, but I have rationalized it for myself, so I am pleased with the result. However, I do find that every time I leave here with a new shopping bag in hand, I feel I am bamboozling myself into paying too much for something I don't really need. I also have to agree with some of the other reviewers who have commented on the fact that just because I am in the store, doesn't mean that I want to hear every thought that pops into the clerks' head. No one likes to shop when the thin salesgirl is calling herself fat at a decibel usually reserved for nightclubs and sports stadiums. I might have duped myself into a new skirt as well, if I hadn't been entirely deterred from nearing the dressing room by thinking "if she's fat, there is no way I'm pretending this will look good on me..." Overall, though, I do usually find things I like, so I'm still going to give it 4 stars. But that could just be me rationalizing again... read more

Always on the hunt for a decent boutique, Mint Julep sometimes does the trick. It's pretty expensive, but they do have great clothes. I wait for the sale. I picked up an adorable white Ben Sherman dress mid season for $90 that can go from day to night and I always get complimented on it when I go out. In a city with as many big-name shopping options as Boston, places like Mint Julep prove the joys of urban retail: independently-owned and curated boutiques with salespeople willing to help. I spent over an hour here with at least ten dresses looking for my commencement dress during my senior year at BU, and after finding a couple that I almost-loved, our dedicated sales clerk brought out a white Ted Baker racerback dress that they were saving for next week's rollout. Mint Julep definitely has something special to offer. They have a very current eclectic collection and we all know fashion is all over the map these days. What I love about Mint Julep is the staff's willingness and interest in finding the right thing for you. I have found this to be true in both Cambridge and Brookline. They are totally psyched to get creative with the pieces in the store and make new outfits. Which is how I end up spending WAY more than I might at a department store where I get overwhelmed. If you want to come out of Mint Julep broke but looking and feeling like a million bucks, go early in the day and make nice with sales ladies. They are amazing!
