Finally got to dine in here last month. My bf and I have ordered take out previously but always wanted to experience the skewers fresh! They use a charcoal grill and you grill the skewers yourself. We ordered beef, chicken, and squid skewers. Also got an enoki mushroom appetizer and the cold noodles. The enoki mushroom wasn't the flavor I imagined so wasn't a huge fan. Really liked the cold noodles though! The skewers cooked pretty easily, we liked the beef the best. They were lightly marinated in some sort of sauce, making them really good and tender! Such a great experience to make your own skewers. The restaurant is spacious with a few tables available for dine in. There is a lot of different food options you can choose from and a lot of different variety. You can also choose to grill your own skewers or they can do it for you. The service is quick, only complaint I have is that they didn't serve us any water while we sat down like most restaurants do. Our meal at Ming Xing was delicious and loads of fun. Loved that we controlled grilling the skewers ourselves as we like a little more char than the owner suggested. Eggplant, potatoes, and peppers was outrageously good. Dongbei style. Fabulous snacks: the best boiled peanuts I have ever had as they were a touch firmer and crunchier than typical. Radish kimchi was spectacular. Not surprising as the owner's family came from Korea to Dongbei. Apparently a lot of folk got out of North Korea and emigrated to Dongbei. The trick to the skewers is seasoning them. They gave us a plate of a chile mix. There was a spice box with cumin seeds, salt and MSG. I put little piles of each on the side of the plate and each piece got 4 dips. The more dipping, the better the flavor. Their grills are gas-powered and they put charcoal on top. We found that as the coals got hot and turned white that the flavor was maximized. We ordered 20 skewers and the stir fry but that was a little too much. Next time we need to go with more people. Staff was very helpful with ordering and I took his suggestions of lamb skewers and an order of dumplings. I went here three times now with a big party each time, so I can only speak for the upstairs seating room. I'm not Chinese, but fortunately my girlfriend and her friends are, so I just let them order everything while I enjoy. First off, when you walk in, it does seem quite hole in the wall and dingy. But as a NYC native you know these run down spots usually serve the best food. Service was friendly, and food arrived quick, although they are super busy each time. My heart goes out to the waiters, there's not many of them and it must a workout running up and downstairs with all the food everyday. The upstairs room is even shadier than the normal restaurant space, but the food is so good you don't even care. Only complaint is that it doesn't get as nearly as cool as the downstairs area in the summer (even with the AC), so it was pretty hot while I was eating. We ordered way too much food (as usual), but that's because the ordering wasn't up to me. Not complaining though, we got to take home some dope leftovers. Favorite dishes are the "guobaoru" (sweet and sour pork), skewers, fried rice (yes- it's JUST fried rice but the taste is different), fried string beans, and fried eggplant. And that spice mix is addicting. I want to know what's in it. We got a bunch of other dishes which were all delicious, the only one I thought was mediocre was this pork or beef?? fried in some sour sauce. They first served us 3 small sides and we each got our own dish of seasoning. I really like this seasoning with the fish tofu! My husband thought it was better that he got to adjust his own seasoning. Wow, what a great find, definitely a hidden gem in Flushing if you're a fan of Chinese style skewers. The location is a little out of the way from the main area of Flushing, and a little difficult to find. That's why if you're not from the area, google maps will be your best friend. We chose to do just skewers and it was still very satisfying. The way it works is you order what kind of meat skewers you want and then cook it yourself on the table. They provide you dry seasoning on the table for when you're done cooking to put on the meats. We were very confused on what to do and how to properly cook the meats since it was all of our first times there so the waiter saw that, and kindly helped us cook most of the skewers and showed us the way. Thank you! So, if you have no idea what to do either, don't be shy to ask the waiters for help! There will be a language barrier if you don't speak Mandarin but you'll see them doing it and be able to figure it out yourself. I highly recommend getting the beef skewers because oh my god, they were so juicy and went sooo well with the house seasoning. They offer 6 small side dishes and a personal seasoning plate. The staffs were so nice there. Because we came almost toward midnight, there beef and chicken were sold out. Being brought up instilled with strong Asian morals, I can somehow hear my mom screaming to my ear of how I might end up starving if I don't learn how to cook for myself. Walk past the flickering lights of suspicious looking spas and massage parlors still open late nights and you'd find MXBBQ amongst some mom and pops Korean comfort food. Restaurant is relatively small in size with about 10 booth tables each capable of seating 6 patrons comfortably around a fire pit filled with burning charcoals. Menu displays a wide variety of preset skewers (10 lamb skewers for $15. 5 squid for $10..). They also presented each one of us with a dry cumin rub. We took a deep breath as they presented us with our plates of raw skewers, and thought, oh piece of cake, we got this! WRONG! Fire burned through and charred our skewers. I'm sure at this point the servers realized the idiots that we are and came to our help. They patiently snipped off our charred ends, and schooled us on proper BBQ techniques. Rule of thumb - 3 skewers at a time if you can't keep an eye on them every few seconds. - rotate your skewers, the drippings from the melted animal fats will fuel the fire. All in all. Great experience. Skewers presented in metal rods similar to kebabs. Rub on the side makes it possible to self adjust your flavor preferences. Reasonable price point. Whoa this place is a like a korean chinese fushion. You could easily have a skewer fest here. The menu is pretty extensive. The minimum about of skewers range from 5 - 10 depending on the kind of meat you're getting. They also offer a bunch of ban chan (korean side dishes) for free with your meal. Tea and cold water is provided as well. My only complain is that you can mix the types of meat even if they're the same price. I wish there was more liberty in this so I could try more varieties instead of eating a vast amount of the same thing. I guess this place makes it more suitable for groups. It would allow you to try more meats. The meats are slightly higher than what you pay at the skewer carts in Flushing/Chinatown/8th Avenue.
