This restaurant embodies everything I look for in a dining experience - inventive menu, bold flavors, thoughtful service and value in price. When you add in the fact that they have a commitment to using local products and are housed in such a beautiful and historic building and you have not only my favorite restaurant but a place that I think deserves to be talked about as one of the very best in New England.
What I've found in past experiences is that farm-to-table concepts can walk a fine line of 'letting the product speak for itself' and unoriginal and while I can appreciate a peach at the height of its season, seeing the creative side of a chef is something I look forward to the most when dining out and Chef Tyler does a great job keeping the menu unique. We have eaten here on at least 5 occasions, including partaking in two different tasting menus. What strikes me the most about the flavors here aren't just how bold they are but how much balance they have and I think that's the hallmark of a very gifted chef and is a trait I think many restaurants lack. My favorite example of this was a dish we had in our first tasting menu which consisted of pickled, preserved, and roasted beets with cumin yogurt, rye crumble and fresh herbs. There was such a sweetness from the roasted beets and a tang from the preserved and pickled beets that was cut perfectly by the yogurt, with cumin being such a unique but spot on spice component. The rye crumble added texture while the herbs added freshness and color. The flavors were pronounced, the addition of cumin was so original, and by preserving the beets it showcased a culinary technique that you don't see everyday. Being that I wasn't even a fan of beets at the time, I remember feeling that if I gave Chef Tyler a list of foods that I didn't necessarily care for I'd have total confidence that he could come up with something that would make me a believer. Some other standout dishes we've had include fluke sashimi with pickled blueberry & yuzu, dashi-poached mussels, sausage stuffed quail, and a cardamom ice cream among many others.
We've had such amazing service every time we've gone. During our first tasting menu, our server Lauren was just so genuinely nice and personable in a way that was warm, friendly and professional. When we mentioned we were considering doing a tasting menu because we were pretty adventurous eaters I felt like she was just as excited as we were to let the Chef take control of our meal. She went out of her way at the end of our dinner to show us a loft area that we inquired about when it would have been easy to slough of us off onto someone else since she still had other tables to worry about.
The maitre d' Brent has been equally as good to us in our visits. Because we've celebrated birthdays here he's really gone above and beyond to make everyone feel special. Before we left one night I had asked about the name of a port wine that I had a few months prior that was part of our tasting menu and after letting me know the name and a little information about it, he said he'd be more than happy to help me track it down if I had a problem finding it locally.
We were in the tavern area on one of our last visits when my girlfriend ordered a steak medium that came out closer to well done. Another server noticed that something wasn't right and when my girlfriend said 'I'm really sorry to be a pain but I think they cooked my steak a little past medium' the gentleman responded with, 'You absolutely aren't the one to be apologizing. I'm very sorry and I will have this corrected immediately.' About 30 seconds goes by and our server Chris comes by with wine that my girlfriend was drinking and topped off her glass with what he called 'apology juice' and looked at my empty beer glass and said, 'I really don't think she should be drinking alone right now' and refilled my glass on the house and asked if there was anything else he could get us in the meantime while they refired another steak. It's never easy bringing up an issue with your food at a restaurant but both servers that helped remedy the situation were so awesome about it, a perfect mix of no-nonsense fine dining and a few well timed, light hearted remarks from Chris that made us feel better about everything. As crazy as this sounds, although there was a minor issue with the food, the way it was handled and the way we felt afterwards was probably a top memory for me here.
I heard Danny Meyer, the world famous restauranteur, say that people come to a restaurant for the food but return for the service. When you have a restaurant like Millwrights where both the food AND the service go above and beyond consistently, you have the makings of something very special and something that seems greater than the sum of its parts. This is fine dining disguised in such a relaxed and beautiful setting. It's our go-to spot! read more
