Set in a beautiful location, gf and I were seated by the gorgeous waterfall. Service was exceptional all night, hostess shook our hands and we exchanged names. I had the Art of Darkness draft beer which was very good. Fresh cornbread with sweet brown butter was unreal, while entrees of the beef duo and skate fish were decadent. Portions were rather small but the restaurant is about more than stuffing you full of food. All things considered, this has to be on the shortlist of best restaurants in the state. There is also a tavern downstairs which I would love to try in the future. It is reminiscent of a basement lodge; cozy with comfy chairs and a fireplace, with their own menu of tavern fare. read more

My husband and I happened upon taco Tuesday in one of our favorite places, the Tavern at Millwright's. Let me begin by saying the service and drinks were very good. Our food however, was a huge disappointment. We had a sampling of fish, beef and chicken tacos. To describe them as skimpy and flavorless is being kind. The kimchi on the fish tacos tasted like nothing more than shredded cabbage, and my experience of kimchi at other restaurants is that it is typically very flavorful. I understand a tavern menu is more relaxed than the dining room menu, but we definitely expected more from such a highly rated restaurant. ZERO stars for the food, Four for the service and drinks. read more

Went in for an anniversary Dinner. A very nice upscale quiet joint; tucked away below the street level in an old mill building. The servers are super polite, the food is super delicious. Wife's salmon was delicious. The service was very good, attentive and even got our desert on a plate decorated for our anniversary. The Dining room did get a little loud to my comfort, only because two old rich ladies from Simsbury decided to sit down next to us and started talking loudly. May be the batteries in their hearing aids were dead? This place is certainly for special occasions; as the price for a dinner for 2 could easily exceed $150. read more

We were hesitant to try Millwrights due to its higher prices. We decided to try out the 1680 Tavern, a pub style section of the restaurant. We had nothing negative to say about our experience. The food was amazing, starting with the best chicken wings I've ever had. My fiance and I really like the concept of using local produce. The staff was very friendly and attentive, management stopped by twice to see if we needed anything. My favorite part was the atmosphere, the Restaurant is built in an old mill and they kept its rustic charm. We will be back to Millwrights in the near future. read more

We tried Millwrights when it first opened and we were unimpressed with the food as well as the service. I thought, what a shame, another restaurant riding on location--which is gorgeous. I'm so glad that we went back. We dropped by last night to give it another try and ended up in the bar downstairs. The food was great from soup to dessert. We had the cheese board and beets to start. Goat cheddar was to die for. The beet salad was in some heavenly dressing. I had a fennel apple creamy soup with a delightful little toasty/fennelly/jam garnish. I would have scraped the bottom if I were home. I had the kale caesar salad, which lived up to the name caesar--most don't. Very garlicy, incredibly delicious. My partners had steak (he was not tremendously impressed with the NY strip), and fish tacos (bar menu). My husband was happy with the tacos. We also ordered crispy Brussels sprouts, which were very good. Dessert was "hot chocolate soup", which was fun--a house-made marshmallow that they pour hot chocolate over, and little teeny chocolate-mint cookies. The show was better than the taste, which was very good but not over-the-top great. I'd also like to acknowledge our server, Brian, who was simply excellent. Attentive but not annoying, always there when you needed him, had great recommendations, and seemed to genuinely love what he was doing, which I rarely see outside of Italy. All of the service was top-notch. One last thing--the location is incredibly romantic and beautiful. It's an old mill with a waterfall right next to it, and a river running by the windows. If you tried it and didn't like it, try again. read more

What can be said other than what has been said. Each course in the dining room was expertly prepared with amazing flavors. I could not help myself and ordered 1 of each dessert without seeing the menu and was even more pleased. The wait staff was courteous and attentive without being intrusive. Lastly the embiance completed a perfect evening of fine dining. read more

What a special experience the tasting menu at Millwrights was tonight! Elegant but cozy atmosphere, impeccable service, and every course a new delight. Ron made us feel right at home while serving up chef's unique dishes. We settled in for a a memorable night. This really is a must try! read more

A little late on my review but I couldn't not let Yelpers know about the BEST restaurant in CT! We went to Millwrights for our 2 year anniversary and upon sitting at our lovely table (we chose to sit downstairs) we were welcomed with a lovely note congratulating us on our anniversary from the Chef. What a sweet touch! We were promptly greeted by our very funny and welcoming server, Jimmy. We both ordered wonderful cocktails - Moscow Maid and Dark "N" Stormy and then shared the foie gras and the cheese plate - both were served beautifully and sooooo delicious! For dinner my honey had a great Ny Strip steak and I had the quail. The meals were OUT OF THIS WORLD! With dinner we enjoyed the Millwright's Old Fashioned and the Boulevardier. (These rocked too!) Even though we were stuffed, we definitely enjoyed the dessert that Jimmy brought us for our Anniversary treat, it was Peanut Butter Roulade with some sorbets. WOW! To end our meal we sampled some wonderful Whiskey and Bourbon from their very EXTENSIVE spirit menu. The food is fantastic and so beautifully plated. The service is 100% perfection. Jimmy was prompt, funny, not overbearing and so so sweet, and extremely knowledgeable and professional. The setting is very romantic and quiet (not a screaming child in sight!) A MUST VISIT!!! 1 visit will turn into more. A Great place to impress someone! read more

My sisters and I hosted an anniversary party for our parents at Millwright's this weekend, and I cannot say enough good things about our experience. The setting is gorgeous. We were in the main dining room, and every seat had a view of the waterfall. The space itself is somehow elegant and rustic at the same time -- high ceilings, exposed beams, and New England charm. The food was delicious and beautifully presented, and the staff was gracious and welcoming. We particularly appreciated working with Jeff, the events manager, who was flexible, accommodating, warm, and just generally a pleasure. We had over 30 guests and we fit very comfortable in the space, but I think Millwright's would also be perfect for a more intimate meal with a smaller party. Thank you, Jeff and the entire Millwright's team, for helping to create an unforgettable experience for our family. read more

The only negative about this place is how long it takes to get here! So if you live close, dare I say, there are no negatives!! The staff goes above and beyond, calling you by name, offering to get you drinks while you wait for your table. (They are always very busy and rightly so.) The food is out of this world and compares to ON20 quality. Wine list had enough for everyone. Only thing I would ask for is more of cocktail selection and more vodkas/flavored liquors. We got a drink in the tavern downstairs and they handed us a wine/beer list but the drink list was missing. I pulled it up quickly on my phone and several people asked what is that when I got my drink. They would probably sell a lot more drinks if they passed that drink menu around!!! Just sayin... Anyways, we will be back... and we ordered almost all the appetizers and tried 5 entrees... not one complaint about food.... read more

This place offers a fantastic dining experience. The menu is original and the food delicious from corn chowder (a real taste treat ) through dessert. Peaches and cream dessert includes a basil sherbet which is quite interesting. Entrees superb. Service could not be more attentive. Only the timing of getting to a table even with reservations has been problematic on 2 visits. We'll be back and I hope soon. read more

Just go and enjoy. Something for everyone. A-Okay entrees. Great desserts. Host/Manager extra helpful with very busy service, though dessert wine came well after dessert finished. Oh well, both were good. read more

Really good and very professional! Went here with my girlfriend and got seated right by the falls what was great! Ordered some smoked salmon for an appetizer what was so delicious! My husband and I visit the tavern fairly regularly as we love the cozy atmosphere and have gotten to know the staff in that part of the restaurant fairly well. Both menus are offered in the tavern, and the food is incredible. I struggled with the star rating because I have eaten both upstairs and down (in the tavern) and have also attended the chef's dinners. The chef's tasting dinner was truly impressive -- 5 stars for sure. The Tavern is 5 stars on all counts as well -- staff, food, atmosphere (a little more friendly and welcoming). I find the upstairs dining to be be good from a food perspective, but a bit slow and not as warm and inviting of an atmosphere or in terms of staff. The other factor that pushed it to a 4 for me is the dessert menu. With the exception of our last visit, there isn't usually anything that entices us to splurge on dessert. I will say, however, our last visit we both got one of the chocolate desserts and they were amazing... We try not to eat too many carbs in our house, but throw that out the window the second the biscuits arrive at our table. The food is great, HOWEVER, one note of CAUTION is that the chef is very creative in terms of his food preparation and presentation. While the food is always great, it has not always been exactly as expected. If something is in double quotes -- you may want to ask for some details. We love the creativity and are never disappointed with a surprise, but I do know that others may not share that same level of appreciation. We love the bartenders int he Tavern as well. The specialty drinks are always creative, and you couldn't ask for a more friendly crew. read more

Post Script. Returned Tuesday night. It wasn't our anniversary but was a closed event where we were served the same menu that Chef Tyler Anderson will be presenting at the James Beard House on Monday. It was better! read more

The owner's son is someone I work with, so when he pulled up the sparkly and chic Web site and told me to check out his family's restaurant, I was pretty excited! Husbie and I went for our 15th dating anniversary, and it was such a memorable experience! FOOD - My husbie and I ordered their 7 course tasting menu which is only $75 - A BARGAIN!!!! We went in the fall, and I cannot remember everything that we ate, but I do remember each course being beautifully plated, thoughtfully executed, and absolutely delicious. We had to decline the very affordable $45 wine pairing as the restaurant is a bit far from where we live, but it's also a great pricepoint! AMBIANCE - Very classy and romantic. I was advised to request a seat by the waterfall at the time of my reservation, and got a great view! We were celebrating our dating anniversary, so the husbie and I were really drinking in the soft, romantic feel of the restaurant. Many of the other patrons were older, like retired age, but I guess that's just the area of Simsbury in general! A lot of the patrons were clearly regulars or returnees, and all the staff members were warm to each guest! SERVICE - My water glass was full constantly, table bussed when appropriate, and was offered another beverage almost as soon as my drink reached the 1/3 full mark. The front waiter and back waiters were all very attentive, and even the host and managers came to our table to greet us. Impeccable service. VALUE - As I mentioned above, a farm-to-table delicious and creative tasting menu for $75 is remarkable. I am SO excited to go back, not just for special occasions, but just-because! PARKING - Ample parking outside. I also want to check out their pub eatery downstairs - looks like they have some bites of food that might be delicious as well! I've recommended this restaurant to every foodie I know in CT!!! read more

Overall excellent service, food was sophisticated with excellent ingredients that works really well together to creat complex flavors. Not to mention the waterfall seating downstairs. read more

Great higher end meal. Exellent service, however we would have been fine only interacting with our excellent server, but other employees interrupted us a few times to ask how everything was. No big deal though. Duck plate was a little light. Maybe 6 or 7 oz. Of duck breast. Another cut would have been amazing. The prices are up there..avg $30 a plate and $9 for a 10oz craft beer. Bring your wallet....would I go back again...yes, but I'd stick to the tavern menu and get a sandwich....apps. read more

I took my b/f here for his birthday. It was our first time here and one of the best meals we've ever had in our lives. We chose to have the 7-course meal with wine pairing. The duck was incredible, the chilled zucchini soup with goat cheese-filled squash blossom was awesome. I could go on and on about the food. The service was equally incredible. When we first sat, there was a handwritten birthday card from the executive chef and owner, Tyler Anderson...so very much appreciated. We'll remember this dinner forever! read more

A group of us went to Millwright's for their James Beard Preview Dinner and had an amazing evening. Fantastic food, great (very original) pairings and super trained, friendly and fun staff! I'd make this spot a weekly visit if it wasn't over an hour away. Congratulations to Chef Anderson - well done! read more

Have been there twice for dinner and each time it was a very good dining experience. Terrific food and friendly service. It is not an inexpensive place but the food, even standard fare like broiled salmon, is done perfectly. Not large portions. And service is sometimes slow with staff forgetting cutlery, or water glass refills but the food and ambience are terrific. read more

One of the best places I have been to. The meals are amazing, the staff is helpful. Chef is great and approachable.

Disappointing Thanksgiving dinner. Should have known it when the soup course was served in a thimble. Three small slices of parsnip do not qualify as an appetizer and a small slice of turkey does not qualify as a Thanksgiving dinner....No one in my party was full when we finished. How about some pumkin pie?...Total rip off read more

We have been here several times before and finally decided to make our first visit for brunch. The ambience is great, although they did get rid of the outdoor seating. I ordered the tavern breakfast, which was cooked to perfection. Make sure to order the breakfast bread with the honey butter, which is to die for. I was also impressed by the many wonderful drink options available. I decided to order the spicy vodka Bloody Mary - which was a build it yourself. We did expect our server to be more attentive, but the bus boy (we forgot to get his name) made sure we had everything we needed. From refilling our water to promptly removing empty plates from our table, he did it all with a positive and professional attitude. It was nice to see a bright staff at such a highly accredited restaurant. I am looking forward to coming back with the rest of my family for brunch, but we also may try the tasting menu with the wine pairing which we have heard wonders about. read more

I enjoy going to the Tavern on occasion but do feel the need the comment on my recent meal. I ordered the fish and chips for the first time. I was surprised when the order was brought to the table. It appeared to be an appetizer sized portion rather than an entree portion. I was served one very small piece of fish with a mound of french fries. Millwrights has never been known for serving an appropriately sized portion and I wish they would fix this finally... read more

Last night was mfirst visit since it reopened and I was very impressed! the place looks wonderful, and the food was out of this world. The saying goes, "The Devil is in the details" Well the Devil is alive and well at Millwrights. The attention to detail was excellent!! The cheese platter was an excellent selection of cheeses and there was plenty for 2 to share. The salmon and scallops melted in your mouth. Atmosphere is very cozy. We had two servers looking after our table. It was a great evening. read more

All I have to say is WOW. The burger was incredible and my girlfriend enjoyed the lobster salad. We enjoyed the tavern scenery and what can go wrong with the three B's. Burger , Beer , and our bartender Brian. He has great recommendations and the all hit the spot. My Bday was complete. Thank you and see you soon. read more

I ate dinner last night with two friends in the tavern section of Millwrights. On the plus side, the burger was delicious and our server was very good. On the negative side, i was seated with my back to another table and there was not adequate room for another server to pass behind me to get to the two tables against the wall. I was unable to move my chair closer to the table as the legs were already up against the base of the table pedestal. Rather than request that the person behind me move his chair closer to the table, or adjust the tables so the server could pass through, the server kept asking me to tip my chair forward so he could get through - at least 15 or more times. When the family seated at one of the tables by the window got up to leave, I got up from my chair and moved it to a space between tables so they could leave. Both adults in the group expressed how sorry they were to have to make me get up and how impressed they were that I had been so patient during the constant interruptions of my meal by the server. Not sure I'll go back and I do wonder if the configuration/number of seats meets fire code regulations. read more

My date and I had reservations on a weeknight. Color me impressed. First, we were seated in a large booth. Obviously it was meant to accommodate more than two, so it was odd that we sat next to each other rather than across for the entire meal. But, I am not complaining, as we both got to enjoy the spectacular view from the big picture windows. There was nothing significant I remember about our waiter or his personality, except that he was polite and attentive. Given the menu and atmosphere, I would expect nothing less. Our hostess had a bit of a personality, which I enjoyed - she offered us the choice of bottled water or "fine Simsbury tap water" to start. There was clearly thought that went into both the dish itself and the presentation. I had the lamb. Every time I get lamb elsewhere, it is gamey and/or severely overcooked, so I was happy that it was a perfect medium rare. I also thought it was interesting that there was no pasta dish on the menu. I love carbs as much as the next gal, but I hate seeing pasta on restaurant menus (unless it's homemade) because I feel like it is an overpriced, cop-out, filler dish. My date and I gladly cleared our plates. I had two glasses of red wine with the meal. The waiter caught me removing a tiny piece of cork from it. Didn't phase me much (I'm not the neatest wine opener when I imbibe at home), but the waiter immediately tried to offer me a new glass. Fantastic gesture. read more

My husband and I had a nice and memorable dinner. The foie gras and beef tartare are amazing! The reason why I couldn't give 5 stars is because when my husband ordered a medium-rare lamb, instead he got a medium-well (close to well done) which had gotten tough. But they replaced it after the server was told. We enjoyed the desserts. However, the espresso was terrible terrible terrible tasting. Overall, it was a good experience and we'll come back again...omitting the espresso. read more

Exceptional, consummate service, fabulous food, perfect ambiance - what else can you ask for in a restaurant? Perfect for taking your lovely wife to dinner. Definitely not for children. This is excellence. This was our 2nd visit to Millwright's and we were not disappointed. We started with the cheese platter. Excellent. I had Skate Cheeks...(skate as in a Ray fish and Cheeks, as in the fleshy part near the eyes). Kind of a cross between lobster and scallops, but a bit less dense. I had never seen it on a menu before, but it was excellent. They were pan seared with spaghetti squash. My husband has NY strip, which was cooked to perfection. Such a wonderful experience. Perfect for birthdays or anniversary. Pricey, but worth every penny. read more

Excellent - fresh, local, creative, delicious with great service. Our area is fortunate to have this chef's establishment.

We went for Thanksgiving dinner, the food quality was terrible! Turkey dinner was all pre-made. Turkey had no taste to it (almost like thick sliced deli Turkey), the mashed potatoes tasted like they were made from a box mix and the stuffing horrible. Other than the water boy, service was poor. Very overpriced. We felt taken advantage of. read more
