KHAO SOI CHICKEN
Melissa M.

Came to meet one of my girlfriends on a Thursday. Wasn't busy. However one. Cook in the back and one server. Service was slower because of this, I tend to give grace in these situations because I know you have to do what you have to do sometimes. Now, with that information, I don't fault the restaurant for that. I simply let the reader know what they are getting themselves into. The restaurant is lined with tables and walls were mint green. The walls are adorned with pictures and some trinkets. The kitchen is immediately to the right as you walk in. The food is good! We ordered mushroom pops, spicy. This is probably the only thing I wouldn't pass on. We got the spicy basil pork, yummmmmmmmmmy! As well as Khao Soi with chicken. The Khao Soi is heavy on the coconut cream so it was slightly sweeter than my usual flavor palate for it. The noodles were cooked well & the chicken was tender. I think the only off I had was it wasn't as spicy as I would like. We did have the spice tray, so that helped!

I've never had a bad experience at million spoons. The food is always delicious, servers are always friendly, ambiance is cozy, and the hours are so convenient. My personal favorite order is their crispy pork/chicken over ginger rice and side of broth. My partner loves how rich and flavorful their khao soi is. I've also tried their mango sticky rice, crab rangoon wontons, fried okra, and calamari on separate occasions - all delightful!

I am not sure if this restaurant is new, but I had never seen it before. My friend recommended it, and I'm glad she somehow knew about it. Service and Staff: - Came here on a Sunday afternoon, and it was empty. It started to fill in a little closer to 1pm - Our servers were nice Food and Drinks: - Thai Iced Tea: yummy and filling - Pad Thai: can order with chicken, tofu, beef, pork, or shrimp. Ordered with chicken, which was little dry. The tofu that already came with the dish was tasty, so I wish I just got extra tofu. It was a pretty large serving, so I had some leftovers. - Fried Chicken: also a larger dish. Filling and yummy. Miscellaneous: - Parking is available via street parking - Good for small and large groups - The restaurant goes back pretty far, so there are a lot of tables - When we went on Sunday at noon, it was very quiet

Chicken and rice

FOOD IS VERY GOOD!! Came for lunch on a weekday and it was pretty packed! Ambiance was great too. I ordered chicken and rice which was so good. The rice was very well seasoned and chicken was so tender. LOVE IT!! Service was good, though there was only one person serving so food took quite awhile to come out. But they did offer mango sticky rice on the house which was a sweet gesture! Overall I'd definitely come back again.

HAINAN CHICKEN & CRISPY PORK BELLY BEEF SALAD FRIED TOFU

This is my new favorite restaurant on the Island! I kept telling my friends that it wasn't Thai cuz it tastes different than the usual Thai places that are all over Alameda. But the owner confirmed it was "authentic" Thai food lol. Their Hainan chicken and rice is next level! Savory with a hint of ginger. I could and sometimes do eat it every day. When I'm feeling naughty I order the chicken and crispy pork belly combo! If I had to pick one thing to eat on Park St that would be it! The beef salad is my other fave. It's citrus and spicy and has a good portion of yummy steak with light greens. Hella bomb! Mango sticky rice is so good! I don't really like mango but they recommended it and I was not disappointed. Service is super helpful and friendly. If you like Thai but want to try more authentic dishes then the standard Pad Thai, try something off the beaten path. You won't be disappointed!

Made the late night call to stop by here for quick dinner. The fried rice and the fried tofu was so amazing! Stop here if you want flavor and nice portion!

Soup and side dipping sauce

Parking was a bit difficult walking a few blocks and around the corner, but typical for Alameda to try and find parking. Our first time trying this restaurant and it is long and narrow. This is a good late night spot of your looking for a restaurant that is open late. It is open til 2 am most nights. I had the tilapia, crunchy fried well and I loved the dipping sauce not super spicy but tangy. It came with a side of ginger rice, tomato and a few slices of cucumber. I tried a few bites of the chicken and pork, nice crunch and definitely tastes better with the two dipping sauces. I did not try the roasted pork soup but I think it would be good on a cold evening. I would try a few more items if in the area.

Mushroom poppers

Decided to dine here based on the Yelp reviews. A lot of the options on the menu looked good. I couldn't decide so I asked our server what was more popular between the basil pork belly dish or the khao soi fried chicken, so I went with the latter. We also ordered the combo pork belly & steamed chicken and mushroom poppers as an appetizer. The mushroom poppers were deep fried enoki mushroom pieces. Could have used more seasoning, but had a nice crunch to them that would pair well with some beer. I liked the addition of peanuts on top of the sauce but wasn't feeling the sweet and sour very much. The khao soi was pretty thick, as another yelper mentioned but still enjoyable. I got it medium spicy, so it definitely delivered in that area. There were some raw shallots or red onion as a garnish, but overall felt a little monotonous and could have used pickled veggies in it or something more to cut the richness. The fried chicken was a little dry and difficult for me to bite through. It also got soggy (as expected), but I probably wouldn't order it together again. I tried the steamed chicken but again, wasn't a fan of the dipping sauces that came with it. They leaned more sweet and sour when I was craving a ginger scallion type of sauce. The inside is actually pretty spacious. I think the interior has potential and could use some work because the main walkway toward the bathroom was greasy/slippery. Also to note, the bathroom seems to be shared with other businesses since it was in a separate hallway. Service was very friendly and attentive, food was solid, but not particularly our favorite. Maybe just not geared toward our particular palettes. I'd be open to trying something else next time.

Fried Tilapia (comes w rice and spicy lime sauce)

Wow! Just picked up my first order at Million Spoons and I will definitely be coming back. So many great options -- can't wait to try the Khao Soi which I had last in Chiang Mai and can't seem to find anywhere else! I ordered the fried tilapia which comes with spicy lime sauce (so good!) and rice. I also ordered the chicken gyoza and steamed veggies ($3). I called in the order and they said it would take 30 mins and it did take a bit longer, but they were very nice about it. I asked for some chili oil/ hot sauce, and they gave me some delicious spicy Thai chilis cut up! The restaurant looks clean and beautiful; they're really making that narrow space work. Parking can be a bit of an issue in the area, but you can typically find it nearby.

Massaman with delish brown rice
Ginevra A.

Little unassuming spot - take out, sit outside for lunch or the inside is cute. Could use some spiffing up in the visible storage areas (no one needs to see that) but otherwise comfortable We sat outside on a beautiful sunny Nov afternoon. I had massaman curry with chicken - the brown rice is terrific that comes with it and the sauce was good. I ordered medium which was clearly a gringo medium and needed some hot sauce. We had Tom yum with fried chicken. Sooo good. Both entrees were enough for two meals so at $40 it was very reasonable! Server was very sweet

Basil Crispy Pork Belly

Considering this place is on Park Street, you know parking will be street parking and may be difficult, and it was definitely the case, maybe because it's as Thursday, we didn't need to circle around too long. To my dismay, the restaurant was empty, which made me a little concerned, but still we went inside. Service was fast, as expected. We decided on Kao Mun Gai, and Basil Crispy Pork Belly. Kao Mun Gai 5/5: this was such a great dish! The rice was so flavorful, I almost ate all of it and I usually don't eat that much rice. Chicken was tender and moist. The spicy sauce was amazing as well. The broth was good to sip in between the bites. Basil Crispy Pork Belly 4/5: what a flavorful dish! You can really taste the basil in this dish. Pork belly was crispy and full of the basil and sauce. This paired perfectly with the white rice to soak up all the flavors. Add a bit of crushed pepper if you want some extra spice. This was a great find and I can't believe there's nobody inside the restaurant. Will definitely come back again!

Grass Jelly Drink
Benny W.

This restaurant is located in the heart of downtown Alameda. There are plenty of metered parking spots around this restaurant. They have outdoor and indoor dining. We ordered the Half Steamed Chicken & Half Fried Chicken With Ginger Rice, Kao Soy Chicken, and a Grass Jelly Drink. Our food came out in a timely manner. The Steamed Chicken wasn't all that. The Chinese version of it tasted better. The Fried Chicken was ok and the Ginger Rice was very bland. It didn't even have a hint of ginger. The Kao Soy Chicken was flavorful and the chicken was tender. The Grass Jelly in a can was a big disappointment. The waitress should have at least pour the grass Jelly in a glass and add a mint to garnish it.

Came here to get a dessert and I've been craving mango sticky rice. Since they do sell that here I got 2 incase one is not enough. Then I found this sign about buy 2 entrees and get 1 free mango dessert but it's a dine in only. What a bummer. If I only knew which the hostess didn't inform me with their special. Not really friendly place. Place has a nice interior seating. Maybe if I had time to dine in the future.

Very easy to make reservations online though I made mine 2 weeks in advance. And they use the reservations to label the seatings. Overall it was a nice experience. The service was great, each table has a small bell to ring for service, but obviously that can get a little annoying so the servers are pretty attentive. (Ie. I didn't hear much bell ringing! ) The menu is split into 3 different offerings every person at the table must select one; ie. You can't go in as a two top and only order one service and share-- each person has to order one service. The sandwiches were delectable the sweets weren't typical, as they were leaning more Malaysian. They did have small scones though (for the more English inspired!) A very wide selection of teas which we enjoyed so much! It was the perfect amount of food since each item was cut for tea. I think there are about 8 tables inside (can arrange small ones into bigger ones) and one outside on the sidewalk. Parking is tough as this is in a residential area- but there is street parking. We went on a Sunday afternoon.

Incredibly overpriced & overrated…read more Sandwiches are so tiny and the amount of food for $48/pp is insulting. We got the kaya, bak kwa, meat floss, sardines, and sambal tofu sandwiches. The sardine and sambal ones had great flavor but just didn't have enough spice or filling. Bak kwa sandwich was $3 extra and completely not worth it. So bland. Scones were small and hard. Pandan cake & pumpkin kuih were bland, esp the kuih. I could barely taste the pumpkin but the texture was good. I ordered chrysanthemum & lemongrass tea and it was pretty tasteless - almost like water. The malaysian pulled tea was good. Very cute restaurant ambiance. Service is just ok - very basic. I really wanted to love this place but both my husband and i came away disappointed. Along with the lack of flavors, the pricing is also pretty unreasonable for the portions. Good to try once, but won't return.
