We've…read morebeen to the Finger Lakes a few times and we actually haven't been to a winery with wine that we actually like. The scenery is always lovely. But the wine? Well, it's just not at all to our taste typically. But this was the first winery in the Finger Lakes that we actually enjoyed. Not only that, many of the tastes we tried were good. We stuck mostly to the most dry wines they had. We had their classic Riesling and it was good. We don't even usually enjoy Rieslings but this was dry and hit the spot on a hot day. There is very limited food here. On our visit, they had a charcuterie board with cheese. The meat was tasty. We didn't love the cheese but I was so hungry that I ended up eating most of it. It also came with candied almonds that were incredibly spicy and some crackers. Again, super starving so ate it all. Our server was friendly though his tastes weren't exactly to ours as it seemed liked he liked sweeter wines. Finally, we came here with kids and this place is perfect for that in the summer. They have a big field with lawn games. Our seat was right in front of the window and we could watch them play outside. It was perfect. Play time for kids and wine and relaxation for the adults.

Wiemer has been around since 1979, but they started really experimenting with biodynamic wine production in 2014. That's how I came to find the winery when I was researching which to visit when I was planning our trip. I'm interested in organic, biodynamic, and natural wines, and Hermann J. Wiemer has become a pioneer in biodynamic wines for the Finger Lakes region. (When we spoke about Hermann J. Wiemer at other wineries we visited that weekend and with people we met in the Finger Lakes, it was clear how much respect people have for Hermann J. Wiemer. Everyone had such nice things to say about the winery, that they are pioneers and examples of great winemaking in the region and that they are incredibly supportive of and helpful to younger, newer wineries in the region.) We had a reservation, which I recommend. Even though Hermann J. Wiemer is large, it's popular and they were running out of space for people who visited without reservations. The space is incredible and varied for different experiences. There's indoor seating and outdoor seating. Much of the indoor space has large open windows so you can see the vines and the property from your seat during your tasting. It was incredibly comfortable inside the winery on this very hot day. The tasting is incredibly flexible. They offer 1.25, 2.5, and 5 oz pours of every wine on their menu. This includes more than 20 wines - many Rieslings, several Chardonnays, Gewürztraminer, Grüner Veltliner, Blaufränkisch, Cabernet Franc, blends, sparkling wines, dessert wines, and more. The staff member who was with us through our tasting was friendly and incredibly helpful. With so many wines, she helped direct us to wines we might have more of an interest in trying. We spent an hour or so at the winery (at one point watching a rain storm through the windows) and took a few bottles home with us. I enjoyed the wines and the experience and have enormous respect for the reputation that Hermann J. Wiemer has built in the Finger Lakes. If you're interested in biodynamic wines, Hermann J. Wiemer should be on your list to visit. It's also just a very beautiful, wonderful space and business to visit in the region. I'd very happily return.

Fully checked in by 4:30PM. Went to the room & were met with a strange, musty smell. Figured we would just deal with it since it was only 1 night. Got ready & left to head to Watkins Glen for dinner & wandering. When we returned to the hotel around 9:30PM, we were met with a live band blasting music literally directly outside of our door and a loud bar beneath our room. There was absolutely no mention of this happening when we were checking in. I went down to the bar and asked someone who seemed to be working there what time the band was finishing and what time the bar closed. She had no idea and had to ask someone else behind the bar. They said the band was finished at 10:30, and the bar would stay open "as long as there were people there". I went back to our room and my husband and I decided to wait it out until 10:30 and pray that it would be better when the band was done. 10:30 comes, the band wraps up.. 10:35, music starts blasting from the speakers again. We were exhausted and just wanted to sleep, so we made the decision to find a different hotel and leave the Showboat. We quickly packed up and packed the car, and I called the number listed online for the hotel. Bri answered, and I told her that I was very upset over the noise and lack of communication regarding the band and bar when we checked in, and that we were leaving. I told her we would appreciate a refund and that the room was empty. She told me that this was not the first call she's received about the noise outside the rooms we were in, and they do not give refunds. I am blown away by the lack of customer service and compassion. We were only checked in for a little over 6 hours, yet paid an absurd amount for a full overnight stay in a rundown, musty, loud motel. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs. This is an awesome winery to check out! It is located down a dead end road, and leads to a historic and ancient large white house overlooking Seneca Lake. Every time I come here, they give you a wine glass with your tasting, at no extra cost to take home with you. (The only other place I know to do that is Naked Dove in Canandaigua) They sell a Ghost wine (white wine) that has a beautiful label, and it is even bottled with a white cork. At a couple of my tastings I was informed that the winery is haunted by a man and his bride/wife, but I would have to go back to remember the whole story. I'm pretty sure that is what inspired the Ghost wine, as well as the bottle's appearance. They serve beer as well as wine, and my recommendation would be to definitely try their Riesling, Ghost and Lemberger. read more

The winding driveway leading up to the property offered a stunning preview of what was to come. As we followed the sign near the road, we were led through rolling vineyards, past picturesque landscapes, and up a steep hill that provided a breathtaking panoramic view of the lake. It was one of those moments where you can't help but take a deep breath, soak in the scenery, and appreciate the beauty of the Finger Lakes wine region. Upon arriving at the tasting room, we were greeted with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The staff handed us tasting sheets, allowing us to select the wines we wanted to sample at our own pace. @winecraft opted for the whites, while I focused on exploring the reds, eager to see what this winery had to offer. The Wine Tasting Experience 2019 Pinot Noir (13.6% ABV) I started with the 2019 Pinot Noir, which had been aged for 19 months in French oak barrels. This was a notable first release of Pinot Noir from their Lakeside Vineyard, making it a particularly special pour. A classic cool-climate Pinot, it had a delicate yet expressive profile, featuring subtle red fruit aromas, hints of earthy minerality, and a silky smooth texture. The oak aging contributed a gentle touch of vanilla and spice, enhancing the well-balanced acidity. It was a fantastic start to the tasting--elegant, nuanced, and undeniably enjoyable. 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon (13.5% ABV) Next up was the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, also aged in French oak. Right away, I picked up on its dark berry aroma, which was rich yet inviting. The first sip revealed layers of blackcurrant, plum, and a touch of baking spice, with a medium body and a beautifully structured finish. This wasn't an overly tannic Cab, but rather one that leaned into its fruit-forward character, making it incredibly smooth and approachable. The lingering finish left me wanting another sip, which is always a good sign. 2019 Lemberger (12.9% ABV) The third wine I sampled was the 2019 Lemberger, aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. Lemberger (also known as Blaufränkisch) is an underrated varietal that often surprises me, and this one was no exception. Deep, dark berry notes dominated the nose, while the palate offered a rich yet soft texture with a slight peppery kick on the finish. While the finish was a bit on the shorter side, it was incredibly smooth and well-balanced, making it a great option for those who prefer reds that are bold yet easy-drinking. This wine was also harvested from the Lakeside Vineyard, showcasing the estate's ability to produce complex and flavorful cool-climate reds. NV Red Blend #3 (13.5% ABV) Finally, I tried the NV Red Blend #3, a Bordeaux-style blend made up of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Merlot. This wine had a deep, velvety character, offering a beautiful balance of fruit, spice, and oak influence. The Cabernet Sauvignon brought depth and structure, the Cabernet Franc added a hint of peppery spice, and the Merlot softened the blend with its smooth, rounded finish. Dark berry flavors, soft tannins, and a lingering mouthfeel made this my favorite of the lineup--a wine I could easily see myself sipping on during a chilly evening by the fire. An Unexpectedly Adorable Surprise Oh, and how could I possibly forget--we met Rosie, the winery's adorable resident dog! Rosie was the ultimate greeter, making her rounds and stopping by for some well-deserved pets from guests. There's just something about wineries with dogs that instantly adds to the charm and warmth of the experience. A Personal Touch to End the Visit As we were getting ready to leave, we had an unexpected but fantastic conversation with the owner, who walked us out to our car. He shared a bit of his background, and we learned that he and his family are originally from Boston, MA. His passion for winemaking was evident--not just in the quality of the wines but also in the way he spoke about the craft, the vineyard, and the journey of running a winery in the Finger Lakes. There was something really special about meeting the people behind the wines--it added a layer of connection to the experience that made the visit even more memorable. Final Thoughts This winery wasn't just about the wines--it was about the atmosphere, the people, and the sense of place. From the scenic drive leading up to the property to the thoughtfully crafted wines and the warm hospitality, it was a standout stop on our tour of the east side of Cayuga Lake. Whether you're a Pinot Noir lover, a Bordeaux blend enthusiast, or just someone looking for a laid-back winery experience, this spot offers something special. We left feeling grateful for the experience and excited to return--because when you find a place where the wine is great, the people are welcoming, and there's a friendly pup named Rosie, you know you've found a gem.
