What a disappointment! We arrived at 4:30, closing time is 5pm. We asked about a tasting and instead of (owner/son) stating 'our last tasting begins at X time, but open tomorrow at X and would be happy to accommodate you then!' We we're told we could have a tasting. He asked for cash, we obliged. It was the FASTEST, rushed tasting experience in my life. It's a shame, three in our party liked some of the wines, but felt the owner was so rude that they didn't bother purchasing. We found it odd that most of the wines are older vintages like 2017. Made for good wine, but nothing was new! Exterior of building was ok, but the interior was dirty, disheveled, unorganized and not decorative! Avoid this winery unless you want to be treated rudely and don't mind a dirty tasting floor. read more

Steve Shaw Jr is rude, condescending, and a masoginist. I would not recommend. We walked in and Steve told us we only had a quick time to do our tasting aggressively told us it was only dry wine and we had to pay in cash. He was aggressive and talked politics in a way that was very off putting. The wine was fine. read more

The offering of red wines at Shaw Vineyard rivals & exceeds some of the major vineyards of California. The aging for 5 or more years depending on the particular grape and vintage is terrific as you are buying and enjoying wine that has been nurtured, developed and bottled at its finest level. You just don't find this degree of care to do the wine right every vintage. Each Shaw Vineyard bottle is a masterpiece to be savored. Be sure to stock up when you visit the vineyard. Visiting from California, we were excited to visit Shaw. Like others have mentioned, the greeting was very mechanical immediately insisting on the $10 cash fee. Really the only interaction Steven Junior had with the guests to tell him not to take a bottle outside. It seem like he thought the guy was gonna try to escape with a bottle of wine. The helper there was very informative, but this was a very awkward tasting as others have mentioned. The wine was good. I would encourage the owner to think about the experience he is trying to provide for his patrons. Perhaps we are spoiled by the warm greetings we get at the California wineries where the the owners are excited to have us in their tasting room. A smile goes a long way. read more

This was the stop of the day! It was a last minute addition because we had some time between reservations. It may look very unassuming but it was probably the best wine we had the whole trip; and we drink a lot of wine! They leave the wine in barrels for 5-9 years which is unheard of and boy does it pay off! Some of the best Pinot Noir and Cab Sauv we've ever had! I want so badly to support a local family business, but our experience here left a lot to be desired. First they don't take appointments. This is not a problem. We walked in and our wait was minimal. However, Steve the owner all but insisted on cash. Thankfully I had some. He had us sit in the old church pew instead of the bar since were a party of 6. It was just a bit awkward of a spot for a tasting. In Steve's defense he was a one-man show. He was collecting money, pouring the wine, and checking people out. However he seemed very frazzled and had a little to no time to chat or interact with us at all. He seemed very curt and I've never felt so rushed in a tasting in my life. Overall I was very unimpressed with the wine. The Cabernet Franc was the only one that I thought was decent. The pours were extremely tiny. We visited about a dozen wineries in the region and hands down Shaw's is the best. This is a genuine working vineyard with beautiful views of Seneca lake. The family knows their wine and is regarded as a winery that you actually bring bottles home from. The tasting room has a casual feel, not too bougie and the environment allows the wine to speak for itself. Steve is well known from the finger lakes to Manhattan and he's a natural salesman. Truly enjoys what he does and appreciates all the visitors to the region. Shaw is a must on anyone's list if they are serious about drinking the best of the finger lakes. Shaw had some of the best dry red wines I've ever had. Absolutely delicious Pinot Noir and Cab Franc, we wanted more and more and are regretting not leaving here with several bottles so we're looking forward to coming back. Shaw came recommended to us by another vineyard in the area so we stopped in around 130 in the afternoon on a Sunday. There were maybe ten or so people in here completing their tasting and within minutes we had a spot. The winemaker himself was here and was incredibly hospitable and made sure we were being helped and had a spot in the tasting room. The tasting room itself is nothing fancy by any means. They had their wines on display, a small area for tastings and then a counter to check out with a desk in the back, which was messy and was a little surprising to walk into but we've found in the past, some of the most unassuming vineyards and tasting rooms have some of the best wines and that's what we were there for today. Not really the place you're going to want to come to get photos and great views but again, their red wine was fantastic. We tasted through maybe five whites and five reds, to be honest, couldn't find one white I enjoyed. They just weren't for me, really coated the tongue and weren't my cup of tea, as mentioned though, dry reds, on point. Worth a stop for a tasting but it's not the place to grab a glass of wine and sit on their deck or porch because there isn't one. Come in taste, buy some wine and head out. read more

During our recent swing through the Seneca Lake wine trail we hit this cool looking winery overlooking majestic views. The place itself looks like a barn from the outside, and a funky artists den on the inside. If you enjoy dry red wine this is a good choice. We bought a few bottles to bring home and enjoy. I'm not a big fan of white wines but they also produced a flavorful pinot grigio called La Bella. My only gripe is with the girl who was serving and telling us about the wines. It almost seemed as if she was bored, was not happy to be bothered by us coming in, and did not really tell us much about the wines. A smile, enthusiasm, and bit of personality goes a long way you know. We did meet and chat with the owner who was a great guy. He told us about how he came into the wine making biz and about his wines and the region. A genuinely nice man who has a passion for wine making. read more

There's no doubt that the strength of the Finger Lakes wine is white varietals, particularly Rieslings. But a few wineries in the region take the time and put in the effort to make quality, interesting reds. Among them are Dr. Frank's and Keuka Lake Vineyards. And I just discovered a new one: Shaw Vineyards. Shaw is focused on quality. The small winery isn't courting the trail bus or limousine. Instead, it's owner wants to talk to the people who enjoy wine for the flavor experience, and not the rush to drunken frivolity. There is love in the Merlot, craftsmanship in the Cabernet Franc, and attention to each of the flavors. If you don't just talk dry, but actually drink it, check them out. You will enjoy the quiet, unassuming atmosphere that says, we care more about making good wine than making ourselves into a tourist trap. read more

I was somewhat disappointed with the quality of their Pinots and Cab Francs even those that were highly rated here and elsewhere by "wine critics". I mean I understand the prices that they are asking based on those reviews but I would have expected minerality intensity similar to those of Burgundian Pinots given the prices being asked but I got none of that. What was even more disappointing to find out that they sell their grapes to other wineries that seem to produce better quality IMHO of wines then I received from them. I might have to visit again some time because it may have been a fluke but I can't say it will be done any time soon. read more

Best in the Finger Lakes. The wines are generally more pricey than others in the Fingers Lakes, but the quality is worth it. I really love that they don't allow Limos or buses. (sorry, but the large wine-drinking, partying groups are generally obnoxious and can destroy the atmosphere tastings should be done in. Everytime I've gone, the owner/winemaker (Steve) is the person pouring the tastings. He's not super chatty, but he is pleasant. Again, Shaw's reds are far and way the best in the Finger Lakes. And I love the small business atmosphere much more than the carnival many of the other wineries turn into on the weekends. It's a must stop if you are serious about wine. read more

Visiting the Shaw winery was pretty different than most other wineries in the area. The customer service was outstanding. The gentleman serving my family was very friendly and seemed very approachable and easy to talk to. I was not a huge fan of the wines, even though I love dry red wines. I don't know if it was just the wines being sampled that I was not a huge fan of, or what. This is a not a winery that you visit for an extended period of time. We stopped here during a wine tasting trip to the Finger Lakes. The tasting room had a kind rustic exterior along with an almost intentional unfinished interior. I'm not sure if it was unfinished intentionally or that was the aesthetic they were going for but the end result was a lot of unfinished wood. There was also a lot of art on the walls so it made an odd combination. They definitely felt like they were going for a more upscale approach than the average winery in the area from the art, to the wines, to the pricing but I'm not sure if they completely pulled it off. The wines were all really dry which isn't really to my taste and wasn't what you really expect from that region. Although they seemed to be good Reds but it's hard for me to judge since that isn't really my preference. The woman who served our tasting was friendly and very knowledgeable. The tasting room was smaller and more intimate than some of the other wineries in the area and despite almost snobbish aire upon entering the staff was very friendly and welcoming to everyone. The only reason I wouldn't rate them higher is I just like dry, bold reds. If you do I'd highly recommend Shaw Vineyards. read more

Shaw had some wonderful dry red wines, but for whatever reason, I didn't find a wine that was compelling enough for me to take home. The atmosphere was nice, and the staff was kind and knowledgeable, but doesn't really have a view or a place where you can hang out for a longer period of time with a glass of wine. To be honest, I'd give it about a 3.5. It wasn't my favorite, but for those of you who like dry reds more, you may find a gem. read more
