Shaw had some wonderful dry red wines, but for whatever reason, I didn't find a wine that was compelling enough for me to take home. The atmosphere was nice, and the staff was kind and knowledgeable, but doesn't really have a view or a place where you can hang out for a longer period of time with a glass of wine. To be honest, I'd give it about a 3.5. It wasn't my favorite, but for those of you who like dry reds more, you may find a gem. read more

Upon entering the winery the suggestion of a shared paring was offered which sounded great until he expected us to " share " a wine glass to drink out of ? Then got less then cordial when we asked for another glass and he offered a wet glass that was not cleaned ? Scolded my friend for drinking the entire tasting unknowingly that it needed to be shared ? Needless to say - a very bad experience and would NOT - recommend! read more

With an intense focus on quality in a humble tasting room, wine lovers will fall in love with Shaw Vineyard. I've said it before and I'll keep saying it - it's always the quiet, unassuming, modest wineries that make the best wine. Shaw Vineyard doesn't have the big facilities, but they more than make up for it with the quality of their wines. Walking inside the tasting room, you're reminded of a cross between a art studio and a wood shop, with a small tasting bar on your right and a few wooden tables with bottles of wines. Sweet drinkers need not apply - dry wines dominate. The strength of Shaw Vineyard's tasting list is in the age of their wines. They have some younger wines but you can also sample some wines over a decade old. The highlight of the whites was the 2003 Chardonnay, which over the last 13 years has developed a very unique taste some will hate or adore. Nutty, smokey, and more acidic, if you love CA chardonnays you'll hate this one (everyone else will dig it). But the reds are really where they shine - especially in a pair of Cab Francs. The first is a delectable unoaked Cab Franc, a neat spin on a traditional franc that really brings out the the spice and dark berries flavors.The second is the 2010 Cab Franc Reserve, which is what I walked out with - bursting with dark cherry flavor and raisins, it has rich tannins and a flavor that will linger in your mouth long after you finish your sip. They also produce Orange wines here - white wines produced like red wines, with prolonged contact with the grape skin - and although I didn't like it enough to buy, the hybrid taste will intrigue wine lovers. It's very fortunate for our bank account that my girlfriend is more thrifty than I am, as I would've walked out of Shaw with everything I tasted. The prices for this boutique winery are higher than other wineries in the area, but they make some of the best and unique wines in the area, and you get what you pay for here. These are some of the best reds in the region, and definitely worth a visit. read more

-1 because the wines are just prohibitively expensive compared to the rest of the region. Bottles start at $17 for their most basic table white, and all of the reds are $30 and up for sure. So come here for a tasting, and if you can take the hit to your wallet, buy some wine. But the four stars are appropriate because the East Coast, in my humble opinion, can't make a decent red to save its live. Not true here though! This is the one winery I went to in Western New York where the reds were actually my favorites. Maybe whatever magic voodoo makes them palatable is also what makes them expensive... maybe lower the price and you'll sell tons of wine? Just a thought! Mr. Shaw himself was in the room during our tasting - he welcomed us and thanked us for coming; the woman who actually performed the tasting was also excellent and knowledgeable. They use full-size wine glasses here, a rarity for tastings. And at $5 for six wines, it's a reasonably priced flight of good, professionally-made libations. Just an update or edit on my review. I was a little sleepy. It's Steve Shaw Jr. that walked us around the vines and poured our tastings and it's $6US for 7 pours. I also meant to say that with the vineyard extending down to the lake it is comparable to the Magdalena vineyard at Weimer and these should be considered the best Gran Cru type sites in the NYS Finger Lakes región. read more

I pondered for a long while before rating Shaw Vineyard "5 stars" and I decided to go all the way to the top... Why? Because everything in life is relative, right? It's very hard to compare their modest (but very cozy) tasting room with what some of the wineries in Napa Valley can offer. It would be even unfair. However, if we are rating a Fingers Lakers winery, they are truly "as good as it gets". First of all, they are some of the best people you will find in the wine business anywhere. This is one of my all time favorite stops when I am visiting beautiful, upstate New York! Not only is the wine absolutely tasty, especially my favorite red, "Cabernet Savignon", they also have savory, tasty, white wine too; it's my favorite wine tastings tour!! The view is also beautiful of Seneca lake, and there is a beautiful gallery of art displayed giving it a quaint romantic, warm, artistic setting. During my recent Finger Lakes visit and after hitting many mediocre wineries, Shaw was a refreshing treat. Earlier in the week, my buddy and I stumbled upon the very new New York Wine and Culinary Center in Canandaigua, NY (well worth a visit!) and they had a nice sampling of NY State wines and beers. While most of the wines tasted were ehhhh - one stood out among the crowd. It was the Shaw 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon. Although we never heard of this winery, we were determined to find it and try some of the fruits of their labors. On our last day of travel, we bumped into the cute little Shaw vineyard north of Watkins Glen and just north of Hermann J. Wiemer vineyard. If we didn't know any better, we would have driven right past this unassuming and under construction facility. The tasting person on duty was Laura - an extremely friendly and knowledgeable employee. For a small $3 charge, we tried 5 or six wines from Riesling, to Gewurztraminer, to Pinot Noir and ending up with the standout winner - the Cab. In fact, it was sooooo good that we paid for a second flight to try the reds again! That sealed the deal for us. Wrapped up a case of 2003 Cab and dragged it back to NJ to enjoy it. Laura even offered us a taste of the freshly picked pinot noir grapes and walked us through the crushing process going on outside the tasting room. Although the establishment looks a bit rough with a lot of construction going on, don't make the mistake of missing this place. Tell Laura that the 2 guys from NJ sent you. If you are serious about wine, this is a mandatory visit in the Finger Lakes. The tasting room is large and comfortable, the staff are all friendly....oh, and the wines are spectacular. Almost all are finished dry, many with extended age. The bottlings tend to be very unique but with tremendous flavor. Highly recommended. read more

Of all the wineries this was by far the most overpriced and over rated we visited (10 total). Every wines is a quote reserve....which is to me, a clever way of jacking up the price on a good, but surely not great, family of wines. In particular the Cab Franc is half as good and twice the price of Damiani's on the east side of the lake...and news flash, you won't find Damiani's on a lot of the so-called wine maps. Bottom line, if you want to taste lots of wines, fine go taste...but don't buy and pay crazy tourist prices. read more

I'll parrot a few other reviews and just say this was by far the best of the 5 wineries we tried in the area, and the only one who could produce a red with authority. All their wines were well made, whites and reds. It is all relative (we live in SF and have toured just about every wine region in CA), but these wines are just good. If you're touring the area, gotta stop in here. The other place we liked, for whites, was Hermann J. Wiemer. Their Reisling was the best of the 5 wineries. read more

A minimal unfinished wood tasting room, crates of bottles, and only one counter. Shaw seems like it is missing something, but then the tasting begins. We went first on Sunday, and then returned on Monday to buy a few more bottles. This place is the epitome of small and especially capable. Unbound by production quotas, or mainstream corporate interests, the small crew operate on an incredibly local DIY Style that leads to wines with deliberate character. We hit most of the wineries this side of the lake, and were most struck by the flavors we experienced here. Definitely interested in seeing what's new next year! read more

We visited Shaw Vineyard the last weekend of October. The wine was excellent and the service was just as good. We happened to find this place by accident and and it is now our favorite place. We dont go on the wine trail to go to gift shops, we want to try wine. This place is a no frills winery. The wine is excellent and the prices are very good for the quality of wine you get. One of the things we experienced while at the winery was a group for people claiming to be employees from another winery. They were very rude and insulting to the owner. I was very impressed with the level of patience and service. Great job!! Its too bad you had to deal with that. Honesty I dont believe the were a part of any other winery or they would not have behaved so rudely. Regardless, I was very impressed with the level of service and professionalism. If you are out on the wine trail, Shaw is a must visit. You wont regret it! read more

This was my first trip to the Finger Lakes wine region, which I entered with a bit of a snobbish attitude. I figured there was no way it could compare to Napa, Sonoma, Willamette, Paso, etc. Basically, with the high residual sugar wines up and down the wine trails, it still doesn't. As many other reviewers ahead of me have said, these are the best, dry, red wines in the region. The winemaker, Steve, kept pointing this out, that he concentrates on his reds. But don't pass up on the whites. At every tasting, I always skip over the Pinot Grigio. I just picture bottles of overpriced, Santa Margarita sugar water. Even Shaw's Pinot Grigio, which was done more in the style of Pinot Gris wines of the Alsace, was terrific. All of these five star reviewers are spot on. If you are touring the region with grandmom, go everywhere else that sells wine named Red Zeppelin. If you enjoy really good wine, visit Shaw. read more

To my own surprise, Shaw likely what I would consider the best wine of our trip. We came within 30 minutes of close on a Sunday and, as we were late in the day, more looking for a continuing good time rather than quality. To my happy surprise Shaw not only had some of the best quality wines from start to finish, but those wines included MANY deep, complex reds that are so rare for the region. In particular I enjoyed the 2010 Cabernet Franc which was so very mature compared to anything else I had tasted up to that point. wonderful product: they understand the depth and breath of what Cab Franc and Pinot should be. Not another Cali or French copycat vineyard but one that stands with the world's great, small vineyard craftsmanship. Love their openness to conversation about their wines, geography, husbandry and even packaging.....they really did help to put Seneca on the "grown up" map when it comes to great NY wines. Have to say, SV is a must stop and see when in the Seneca area: beautiful location, engaging staff and modest in decor....no need for the flash and trash that so many Cali vineyards put up. I went to Shaw Vineyard on 8/13/14 while vacationing in the Finger Lakes, NY. It was a different experience than what I had become accustom to. The interior was filled with art for sale and there was not a clearly designated bar for the tasting. (It was more like a table set up in the middle of the room.) The wine was also very dry which was a stark contrast to the sweeter wines I had sampled in the area. I wasn't a fan of the wine but to be honest that had more to do with my palate than I believe its quality. I thought the staff was very nice and not pushy. It was a lovely tasting experience and a interesting point of comparison. What I really liked about Shaw Vineyard is how it exampled how diverse the wine tasting experience in and/or around the Finger Lakes can be. read more

First of all, the wine is fantastic! Definitely my top two places in the entire FLX Region - and they conquer both red and white wines, which is rare here. We just took a group of folks who live outside New York state and they were blown away. Each person was a huge California fan and put up Shaw wines against anything they tasted in Sonoma or Napa. Shaw Vineyard was THE pleasant surprise of our annual trip to the Finger Lakes this year. We visited eighteen wineries in seven days in September and while some were old favorites, and some were places with big reputations we hadn't been to before, Shaw was a mystery. But it was on the way, and close to another place and I'd heard a couple of nice things, enough to make us pull in on a Friday after lunch. Unassuming facility. The tasting room is small and eclectic but comfortable. Old west feel, lots of wood. Young guy on a bench in the back of the room carefully lining up and putting labels on bottles. We were knocked out by the quality of Shaw's wines. They displayed a depth and character missing in a lot of Finger Lakes wines. A lot of reason seems to be Steve Shaw's philosophy of releasing his wines two to five years later than his peers. Not just the "estate" or "reserve" or "single vineyard" stuff you see at some places, but they hold back all the wine. At many places we went in the Finger Lakes a tasting resulted in, "this is good now, maybe it will be really good in two or three years". Well, Shaw's wines are really good right now. Across the board. We have only seen two wineries that are good right across the board and this is one of them. In particular we loved the Cab Franc and Cab Sauvignon. We picked up a case, to take home. The case became nine bottles after dinner at our rented cottage that night. We were also fortunate in that Steve Shaw was around and gave us some of his time, sharing his wine making philosophy. To call Steve opinionated would be an understatement. And you may disagree with some of his ideas. But you can't disagree with the results he gets. Low profile winery. Really good wines. read more
