I lived in St. Louis from 2013 to 2020, and during that time, the Crack Fox almost singlehandedly kept the Downtown bar scene alive. Six years later, I am back in STL for work--just four days, but I had to make sure I checked in here, at a bar I can now safely say is truly special. My current city has no comparable equivalent. Bars like The Crack Fox--that is, neighborhood dive bars that make great cocktails, with actual character and passion--bars that care more about what they do than the money they make doing it... these bars are rare. They're rarer than I thought they'd be back in 2020. You've got something special here, St. Louis. Take care of it.

All are welcome! After finishing dinner with some friends, one suggested we come to the Crack Fox…read moreas it was their 15-year anniversary. We arrived a little after 11 and found a space in the back parking lot. The lot is convenient as it's pretty well-lit and is diagonal from the CF. We entered through the back where the deck is and walked right in. Upon first glance, you'll notice the hanging lights above the entrance and then after a few feet, the bar is immediately to the right. The tables are all along the left side as to make a walkway for the bar (super convenient). Due it being their anniversary, it was a bit crowded but not too bad where you couldn't get a drink or walk through. My usual go-to is a flavored vodka (three olives grape) and sprite. While they had a plethora of spirits, sadly this wasn't one of them. They had other flavored vodkas but I opted to get a simple Cosmo while my friend got a makers and coke. The Cosmo was just what I needed and might I add, well made! After we got our drinks, we did a quick walk through of the other side called The Oddities (coming soon), as well as the upstairs that overlooks the entire place. The stairs are steep, so it would behoove you to hold on to the railing. While I love trying new places, I was a bit apprehensive because I thought I'd stick out like a sore thumb. Turns out, everyone was friendly, the drinks are great, and the music wasn't bad! They had different acts going on for this particular evening (I'm not sure if this is the norm), but I know my friend is a regular on Tuesday's for karaoke. I do intend to come back and try out some more drinks and food and check out the other place once it officially opens.

It's dimly lit with R&B playing in the background. There are neon signs adorning the darkly painted walls. I sat myself, and the staff came and brought the menu. The menu is hookahs and non-alcoholic drinks. I ordered a orange, watermelon, and mint hookah using AF tobacco in a grapefruit head, along with a mug of mint tea. The hookah took a few minutes to arrive but it smoked well and had good flavor. The mint tea came sweetened, a little too much for my liking. It's a solid hookah bar to chill and smoke. They have Wi-Fi so you can relax with your hookah while browsing. Definitely would return if I were in the area again

Here's the issue, the bartender literally messed up all of our old fashions. We brought it to their attention and they still charged us even though we did not drink. Additionally, all the men were patted down and the ladies were not. Service was not good and the bartender is TRASH!!! I would not recommend this place!

I spent the evening on the outdoor patio with a hookah, and it was genuinely one of the more pleasant ways I've spent time in this city. The setting is perfect for it: the neighborhood has a calm, almost European energy, and the restaurant leans into that with its outdoor setup. The hookah was smooth, well-prepared, and the service was attentive without being intrusive. I didn't get to try the food this time around, but the place has the feel of the real thing. You can tell it's a family operation that takes the cuisine seriously. The menu looks legit. Will be back, and next time I'm eating.

Between the outstanding food, flavorful hookah, generous portions, and genuinely hospitable atmosphere, this place is a staple in the Central West End and worth coming back to again and again (and most people do!).
