We had gone out for dinner on a Sunday evening and there was only 1 waiter working the afternoon. It took forever to order but we received all our food hot and ready after placing our order. Highly recommend the kibbeh, it is very yummy and reminded me of Cuban croquetta. The restaurant itself wasn't too busy, just a group or 2 smoking hookah in the lounge area. Once we were ready to pay, we got charged an automatic gratuity of almost $13... when my partner pointed this out I thought that the 2nd waiter who came into work later that evening and was closing us out had made a mistake (you'd usually see an automatic gratuity being charged to parties bigger of 5 or 6 people). She stated that this was not the case and that restaurant had been doing this for a while now... I've been to Ranoush multiple times to both the CWE and the Loop location and this is the 1st time I hear of this. This new initiative wasn't even mentioned prior to ordering or stated anywhere on the menu. I even questioned the waiter if the automatic gratuity would be charged for appetizers and they said yes. They were out of mint for a mojito which is one of the 4 drinks they offer on the menu that have also been the same 4 drinks since I started going here... but not a big deal I'll order something else. However, it seemed our server couldn't really make any other cocktails as they were either out of it or don't carry something even though there looked to be a very full bar inside. Anyway we mostly just ordered a liquor and a juice or soda because of this, to which our server replied that we were ordering dive bar drinks .... My one friend also waited almost 10 minutes for her drink that was wrong even though it was just a "dive bar drink." The vibe was kind of weird after that and our server disappeared after we got our hookah (which was underwhelming). I originally had wanted to order food as well but decided not to by the way the experience was going. We waited to see if our server would come back out to get the bill but she was no where to be found we had to ask the door man to track her down for us. Finally a bill and an included 20% gratuity which I guess I didn't see on the menu. I can understand why some places do that, but then the service should at least be up to par to reflect that. The service at this place was absolutely horrible from start to finish. There was no real DJ at all just YouTube playing the same recycled STL songs on repeat all night. The wine list is not huge, but heavy on West coast wineries, which was much to my liking. They also have some run of the mill bottled beers and a small cocktail menu. They do have hookah here, so if that bothers you, don't go late in the evening. Over the moon for the arrival of Levant! The new owners cleaned up the space very well. It was formerly Katz's Deli and the interior was a disaster! Now, some neutrals against black walls work well with all the light from the front windows. Ordered the vegetarian platter (falafel (fluffy perfection), baba ganoush (both the consistency and acidity were well balanced), hummus (smooth and creamy), mohamara (loved the nuttiness and the fact that it was not spicy. My daughter was sharing)). This was a good portion that was shared along with a side of Kibbeh Naeh. All was super tasty and great on this super hot day! I really wanted to like this place :( The place has so much potential but the service that I had the other day was not that great. I love me some hookah so when I seen this on Google, I immediately wanted to give it a try. My friend also had been here prior and he really enjoyed it the first time he went so I decided why not test it out. I went on a Sunday evening and it was pretty busy. Inside is rather small and hot so we sat outside. Our server was cool, but he was just moving rather slow. I understood he had other tables to wait, so I didn't necessarily complain, I just took a mental note of it each time. I had asked for a glass of water and it took almost 30 mins for him to come back with it, and that was after I had to remind him. When it came time to pay, I had to hand my bill to someone else, simply because he was taking way too long and I was ready to go. This is a Mediterranean cuisine, so I wasn't too sure about a lot of food options on the menu nor was I brave enough to try anything, so I ordered the chicken wings and fries. The chicken wings were absolutely disgusting, as they dipped them in some white sauce that I wasn't told about prior to ordering. It doesn't mention it on the menu either. I wasn't that hungry, so I didn't care to try anything else so I just kept it and didn't even feel like sending it back. My friend had the lamb chops and he loved it, so if you're into those, I would suggest maybe ordering those. The hookah was okay. They charge for coals, to which I thought was a bit outlandish, but they're only $3 so I said whatever. They offer a number of flavors. I've had better hookah at other places, but for STL it wasn't that bad. Despite it taking forever to come, the drink I had was really strong and it good as well. My drink also came AFTER my food was served, to which was a bit chaotic, unusual and annoying to me, but again -- my server was just not on it that night. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and just say he was having an off day. The dj played good music. So I would say if I were to come back, I definitely would only go for drinks and the hookah. A new restaurant in the CWE that offers some excellent Syrian food, albeit with a couple of misses. This space has large windows onto Euclid, but they are nicely balanced by a dark interior. With the soft background music, it made for a relaxing atmosphere where we could simply enjoy the dinner and friends that were with us. The young lady that took care of us was also very nice & friendly, offering suggestions for dishes, checking on us, etc. Lentil soup was quite good. It is a pureed lentil soup with a light, savory flavor. A quarter of a large lemon is served with the soup, which adds a nice tartness that makes a good counterpoint in your bites. I would squeeze small amounts before each few bites, allowing me to better control the effect. Baba ganoush was also quite good, with a soft consistency sauce that had well-balanced flavors. It came with quite a large amount of pita slices that we also ate throughout with our entrees. The kibbeh (traditional Syrian dish of fried balls of spiced meat and bulgur wheat) appetizer tasted good, but was a disappointment in that there were only three of them. While they are not pictured on the menu, the online menu shows eight or nine in the dish. So when this small dish came out, which cost just as much as the baba ganoush, I was unpleasantly surprised. And why three balls? Generally a table has at least two or four patrons. Make it an even number so that we don't have to split one of them so that all four can try it. Our server suggested grilled items for our first time there. They come with rice and a cucumber/tomato salad. She said when we come back, then we can try the different main courses. The shish tawuk's grilled chicken was tender and nicely flavored/spiced - a hit. The Levant mixed grill includes chicken, beef, and lamb chops. Chicken was the same excellence as the shish tawuk. Beef was a large roll of seasoned beef that was also very good. Lamb chops were so tender that we just cut them with our forks. They too, we delicious, but rather small in size. The Levant filet mignon kabob cubes were flavorful (marinated in olive oil and levantine spices). Unfortunately, they were fairly dry and a bit tough. Filet mignon is such a lean meat, that the chef should probably explore a different preparation method - perhaps marinading with something more acidic to tenderize the meat, or doing a quick grill and finishing in the oven. All the grills came with a generous amount of basmati (I think) rice, and the salad and dipping sauce were both pluses. read more

Yesterday was special day for me; it was the 40th birthday of my nephew who is also my godson. His lovely wife, giving him a surprise party, decided on Levant as the location for the party, and what a great choice that was. First, the owner, Ahmad, is a very pleasant young man who is aware of the needs of his customers; he listened to what is expected and delivered to a perfection. He was there from beginning to end. He ensured that everything was top shape; there was nothing we could complain about and I tell you I have one brother who is very critical of restaurants foods and he actually complemented the restaurant on all aspects of the party. The decor of the place is welcoming, comfortable, and warm; the colors are elegant, making a statement without much noise or pretense. Hard to believe how many people they were able to comfortably fit in the main hall. The chairs are very very comfortable, more like chairs for a home dinning room, rather than a restaurant. Now, let me tell you about the staff: warm, smiling, genuinely wanting to serve you and please you; I want to extend special thanks to bartender Peter and also bartender Christian (sorry if I misspelled your name). They never tired from start to end. NOW, let me move to the food, and how great the food was! The appetizers were perfect, especially baba gannouj; the salad, with onions, was so tasty I made a sandwich with the pita bread and enjoyed it that way. The main dish had shish tawook (chicken on a skewer), shish kaboom (meat on a skewer), and lamb chops; they tasted so great that we decided to go back on our next visit to St Louis. The meat was soft, yet not overcooked; smelled great; rightly season with balance of herbs that brought the aroma of the Middle East to the gathering. The rest rooms are CLEAN! They smell good and conveniently located in the restaurant. The location is on a lively street, but not noisy; parking is not easily available and you might need to find one a block away but that is no fault of the restaurant. I encourage you to give Levant restaurant a try for a casual dinner on a week day, a weekend night, or a party; you will get very good food for reasonable prices, nice staff, and hospitable environment.
