Hey, I just wanted to write a review because I've been here twice and well, you know.
Here goes.
A reservation is helpful here. The guidebook I looked at rated this as the top restaurant on Orcas Island.
There is nothing really special about the food here. I love Mexican food, so I usually gravitate towards those restaurants, and I'm usually really happy.
The corn app is ok, eight dollars for a ramekin of oven corn with some spicy mayo on top, with a dash of cheese maybe, I dint even see any on mine. The corn was of the frozen variety, you can tell by the way it's detached from the cob, a machine did that. Those boxes cost about twenty dollars for a twenty pound case or even twenty five pound case. I know this because I'm a chef. I know, I know, a chef who writes reviews on Yelp - I don't do it often! So yeah, 8 dollars for a quarters worth of corn. It's not bad though. And it goes well with the nachos, they're good. The proportion of cheese, beans, toppings is spot on. Each chip is swimming in a little sea of gooeyness. I was putting the corn on the chips and it made a nice addition.
After you've eaten your apps and had a drink - Leave.
I got an entree. I chose corn enchiladas with chicken. Perhaps the easiest thing in the world to make.
The beans and rice that came with the dish were almost inedible, and I'm of the starved type in life. It wasn't even the same beans that were on the nacho, even though both were refried beans. The one's with the entree tasted burnt, sulphuric, two bites and I was done.
The chicken tasted gamey........I took another bite and studied the taste, to make sure the bird wasn't too old. Aged poultry takes on a certain gaminess, duck works especially well if you're into that sort of thing. But this wasn't what I was getting, it wasn't old. I was relieved. And I did all of this calculating without telling my girlfriend what was going on with the first couple bites of my sixteen dollars enchiladas.
I took another bite, and there was the unmistakable gamey flavor of........TURKEY. Yes, I was eating turkey enchiladas. I know this because I get chicken everywhere I go, and it never tastes like this.
I handed my girlfriend a forkful, we frequently split entrees, and asked her what she thought......She said it was good, as she worked it over in her mouth I asked her if she thought it tasted like turkey. Fireworks of realization exploded in her eyes and I dint even need a verbal response.
I kind of ate the rest of my entree. It's a shame the place does this. I don't know why they can't just buy chicken. Especially if the menu says chicken.
My girlfriend really liked her food.
The place is interesting, the booths and chairs are built right into the wall. A lot of locals filter in closer to eight, it definitely has a decent reputation. I heard a guy get a nacho as his main - genius move, I'll be doing that next time.
Enjoy Orcas. This is a cool spot for a drink and an app. read more
