I always like trying new things on the island! Matthew's was our post-hike choice, and it was just the hearty meal we needed. Each couple split a brisket plate, and I got an extra side of coleslaw and cowboy beans. Food was FAST and was lovingly brought out to us - very kind! Note: if you're bringing a furry friend, you'll need to sit at the tables on the grass, the deck is not dog friendly. Now the food. We all found that the brisket leaned dry, but had good flavor. Paired with the sauce it was a nice time! The sides really shined, and all of them felt well made. If you're into beans and slaw, this is a good place for those. Last night and dinner on Orcas and this place came highly recommended. We got in about 6 pm and there was only one other person here. Nice homey interior with a little stage off to one side. This place must be hopping when there's music playing. Looks like there's a bar area with a pool table in a separate room. Ordered the brisket and ribs with a couple of sides. The brisket and ribs were very flavorful. Maybe a little too tender but tasty none the less. Worth the visit. Wish we were here on Friday when the live music was here. read more

Very laidback vibes, with some delicious lunch options! We stopped in on a whim and enjoyed the outdoor area with cornhole, ping pong and other yard games. Similarly, the food was fantastic! We were told to try the "loaded fries" and the Philly-ish Brisket Cheesesteak and both were so good. I think the person taking our order was a little new, but they were eager to help and quick to get answers to questions they weren't familiar with. Our first stop on Orcas Island after exiting the ferry was Matthew's and we are glad we did. Arrived about 5:30 and were able to immediately order. When we departed, there was quite a long line and the parking lot was nearly full. It was a Friday evening. The brisket - seriously - was some of the best I've ever had. It melted in your mouth and you did not need a knife - just a fork- to pry it open and enjoy! My husband enjoy his pulled pork sandwich as well. This was the only thing open that was near our lodging. It appeared to be a family operation on a property with other lodging. It has so much yard to lounge on a nice day like today. Great customer services. Seat yourself after ordering. We order ours to go. Sadly the guy in front of us ordered the last ribs and they were all out of chicken as we were going to order the BBQ Plate. What a treat! Call and check the hours as they are likely to change during the year. It was open 4pm Friday- Sunday while we were there. Such a great hidden gem, out in Deer Harbor... Totally worth your drive if you're in Eastsound. Food was fantastic... I got the ribs and my nephew got the pulled pork. He also got the mac & cheese and fries. I got the potato salad and coleslaw. They were all good, but the fries were outstanding! Might just be the best I've ever had! Ambience was great. You can sit inside or outside. Very cute and cozy and especially if you get the couches! Sadly, I have one complaint, and this is just for the owners or chef. My nephew came in with his service dog, which is the most well trained and calm dog you've ever met. We were greeted with a "no pets allowed by the chef...You have to take them outside". I said 'he is a service animal!', and the chef shook his head and said take him outside. Thank you very much. And turned and walked away. I still can't believe the way he treated us. My husband and I were staying at the Deer Harbor Inn and Matthew's Smokehouse was right next door to our cabin. We loved the food here and it was probably one of our favorite meals on the island. This restaurant is family run and not open all the time, so we were happy to be around when they just happened to be open. I thoroughly enjoyed my pulled pork sandwich. My husband ordered the BBQ brisket plate with mac n cheese and fries. We also split their wedge salad. Everything looked and tasted so good. Their BBQ meats were cooked very well. The mac n cheese was just creamy goodness. Service was excellent. We noticed that the servers were hustling back and forth making sure all the customers had everything they asked for. They have a few tables outside for dining, however we decided not to eat here. We took our food back to our room and had a nice dinner on our patio with a glass of wine. We stayed in the Lodge at the Deer Harbor Inn and Matthew's Smokehouse was just steps outside of the back door of the lodge. We checked out the menu online which consisted of standard BBQ fare and thought, "Why not?" We headed down the dark, steep staircase from the back entrance of the lodge and made our way to the dirt path leading to the restaurant. When we got there, we were greeted by a wood plank bridge lit up by tiki torches and the bright moon. As we nervously opened the sliding glass door, we saw a sign that read "Order this way" in giant lettering, pointing to the bar. The bar has been converted to an ordering counter and the room had multiple coolers consisting of beer, ice cream, soft drinks, and other cold provisions. There was also a set of shelves containing basic necessities such as a small selection of candies, small boxes of cereal I had not seen since elementary school, and playing cards. There is an established traffic pattern to promote physical distancing, which seemed well-put. The first night, we ordered a brisket sandwich with fries and a brisket plate with mac & cheese and collard greens. Everything came packed effectively and very thoughtfully. The containers and cutlery were all compostable and the container for my brisket plate had a liner of chili pepper images. The brisket was absolutely succulent. My first bite immediately transported me to my wedding, which also had brisket. Matt, are you SURE you didn't save this from my wedding? I know we had a lot leftover! The mac & cheese was the creamiest ever. All the way to the very last bite. It never once got sticky, dry, or mushy. It had a slight hint of garlic in it. How did you do this, Matt? The collard greens were very average for a smokehouse. I'm Southern and picky but thought I would give them a try anyway. I probably would have seasoned them a lot more and let them cook for about another hour. The second night, we decided to go back and were equally as impressed as the first night. As we approached, the lady behind the counter mentioned they had prime ribeye for their special. I managed to snag the last of the center cut prime ribeye. My prime ribeye was perfect. It was the perfect portion, perfectly seasoned, and cooked perfectly. The plate was accompanied by small containers of horseradish and au jus. The horseradish left me yearning for more bite but it was still great. I had a sample of fries last night, so I decided to skip the collard greens in favor of my own fries. The mac & cheese was just as creamy as the night before. Seriously, Matt, what is your secret?! I cannot recommend this place enough. This has to be THE best kept secret of Orcas Island. Please put this place HIGH on your list. I hope you guys survive this pandemic and get all the success, but it is truly deserved! read more

Nice atmosphere and good location. Just surprised that they ask for a tip when you pay before they have even done anything for you. Not mind you that I wouldn't tip. But as a first timer there hard to tip before you taste the food or even see the service. So I tipped n the low end then left a little cash on the table. The foods had good flavor but the meat was cold. And the BBQ sauces where kept in a fridge which also made them cold. Would have been better had they both been hot bc it was a cold night. Also the local beer left a lot to be desired, the beer was a bit flat. This restaurant is very unreliable with their opening hours. Unless you eat dinner super early, I would suggest don't even bother to go. Even though their website says they close at 9pm, when we went there on a random Monday at 7pm, they informed us that everything is sold out and they are going to close early. I mean, I get it that Monday is slow for business, but the restaurant could've adjusted their hours permanently or have a better estimation of their food. A nice walk from the Deer Harbor Marina, Matthew's has a wonderful setting with some views of the harbor and a field full of games to play. The pulled pork did not disappoint, it was really nice. The collard greens were great and the Mac and cheese, well just as it should be. The cole slaw had a little surprise as it had horseradish included with the sauce, nice (if you like horseradish). The potato salad was a little heavy on the dill but otherwise nice and creamy. A good selection of beer and wine and the great setting make this a nice choice. Got there at 4:15 ( 15 minutes after they open) and they were out of brisket and certain sides. As we're standing in line the guy that works there is ringing up all the brisket left from people who called in orders while customers who actually came in get nothing. Either way, we got ribs that were ok at best and essentially plain black beans as a side. Bush's baked beans out of a can would have been better than what we got served. If you NEED bbq then sure, go here. I'd avoid this place if you have any other options. read more

I had high hopes for this place, being only about 5 minutes from my home and receiving many good reviews. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. I ordered the half rack of baby back ribs. Now if you are expecting a tomato based BBQ sauce or a tangy dry rub on the rib, both of which are delicious, you will get neither of these. What I received was an overcooked and barely seasoned piece of meat that I couldn't even eat. I ordered coleslaw and potato salad as my two sides. Unfortunately, they were out of potato salad, very early in the dinner hour I might add, so I ordered mac and cheese instead. This seems to be a common thread in the complaints about Matthews. You can no longer blame Covid-19 for poor restaurant management skills. Figure out what is selling, then order more of it for next time, simple! The coleslaw tasted like cabbage in water and the mac and cheese had very little flavor. Doesn't anyone on the island know how to make coleslaw? Either a mayo based or vinegar based slaw are both great, unfortunately, this tasted like the pre-graded stuff you find in the produce department of the grocery store just dumped in a bowl. The mac and cheese was editable after adding salt and pepper. The mac and cheese was the only thing I ended up eating. Service was as bad as the meal, which I had the privilege of paying $25 for, along with a 20% gratuity to serve myself because the waitress was too busy to serve me as she socialized with her family and friends. I waited over an hour for my meal before picking it up from the order counter myself. I won't be returning again, unless and until they change the menu and the staff. As a family owned business, I doubt they will change either. If you are putting yourself out as a smokehouse or BBQ joint, at least have a good slab of well cooked meat with a memorable rub or sauce. And dare to be different by maybe trying a mayo based coleslaw instead of the bland stuff every other restaurant on the island is serving. I don't need my slaw to be healthy when I am ordering a half rack of ribs! I try to support locally owned and operated businesses, as I am sure others on the island try to do, based on the 4 and 5 star reviews. However, when you are paying top dollar for quality food and service and get neither, then some businesses are destine to fail. read more

This is one of the few "inexpensive" options with an entree under $20. Family atmosphere and lawn games are great. But good just wasn't up to par. We went to dinner around 6 and about half the items were sold out. My ribs looked exactly like Costco premade ribs and there was no signs of a smoker. I love Costco ribs but these were so dry I had to drown them in BBQ sauce. Pulled pork meal was better and sandwiches were fine. Mac & cheese was great. Wasps swarmed our food as soon as it was delivered so we retreated inside. Overall Ok but not great. read more
