Brisket platter with french fries and coleslaw

Our first stop on Orcas Island after exiting the ferry was Matthew's and we are glad we did. Arrived about 5:30 and were able to immediately order. When we departed, there was quite a long line and the parking lot was nearly full. It was a Friday evening. The brisket - seriously - was some of the best I've ever had. It melted in your mouth and you did not need a knife - just a fork- to pry it open and enjoy! My husband enjoy his pulled pork sandwich as well. We sat outside on the patio on this beautiful June evening and the music they had playing was actually awesome.

Who doesn't like smoked meat?!?!? The sandwiches are great too. If I lived closer I'd eat here all the time. Slowly making my way through the menu.

Wow how did we miss this place. Definitely in the top 3 eateries on Orcas and dog friendly too. I had the brisket sandwich and it was AWESOME!!! Live music? you betcha. Reasonably priced for Orcas. Highly recommended.

This place was amazing. Out in the middle of no where on the island but man was it worth the longer drive. The meat was fall of the bone delicious and the sides were amazing as well. The alcohol and drinks were strong haha The staff were really nice and personable. The restaurant was cozy and homey. The whole experience was awesome! Cannot wait to come back and eat here again!

This was the only thing open that was near our lodging. It appeared to be a family operation on a property with other lodging. It has so much yard to lounge on a nice day like today. Great customer services. Seat yourself after ordering. We order ours to go. Sadly the guy in front of us ordered the last ribs and they were all out of chicken as we were going to order the BBQ Plate. We ordered the brisket plate with two sides Mac & Cheese and collard greens. Cod & Chips. Everything was delicious except for the mac&cheese. The brisket just melts into your mouth.

What a treat! Call and check the hours as they are likely to change during the year. It was open 4pm Friday- Sunday while we were there. Some items were out from the menu when we got there around 7pm so be flexible or show up when the place opens. The BBQ was amazing and I was impressed with the cod tacos. Definitely a job well done!

Such a great hidden gem, out in Deer Harbor... Totally worth your drive if you're in Eastsound. Food was fantastic... I got the ribs and my nephew got the pulled pork. He also got the mac & cheese and fries. I got the potato salad and coleslaw. They were all good, but the fries were outstanding! Might just be the best I've ever had! Ambience was great. You can sit inside or outside. Very cute and cozy and especially if you get the couches! Sadly, I have one complaint, and this is just for the owners or chef. My nephew came in with his service dog, which is the most well trained and calm dog you've ever met. We were greeted with a "no pets allowed by the chef...You have to take them outside". I said 'he is a service animal!', and the chef shook his head and said take him outside. Thank you very much. And turned and walked away. I still can't believe the way he treated us. Not the Orcas Island hospitality I'm used to.

This is an awesome place! It's self serve, you order when you come in, you can sit inside or outside & the food is delicious! My friend had a pulled pork sandwich w/fries & I had the fried chicken w/fries & cold slaw. You can see the water from the deck & there's lots of grassy area for kids to run around & play. They also have corn hole & a few other games for big & little people. The service is great & Paxton is an awesome cook!

My husband and I were staying at the Deer Harbor Inn and Matthew's Smokehouse was right next door to our cabin. We loved the food here and it was probably one of our favorite meals on the island. This restaurant is family run and not open all the time, so we were happy to be around when they just happened to be open. I thoroughly enjoyed my pulled pork sandwich. My husband ordered the BBQ brisket plate with mac n cheese and fries. We also split their wedge salad. Everything looked and tasted so good. Their BBQ meats were cooked very well. The mac n cheese was just creamy goodness. Service was excellent. We noticed that the servers were hustling back and forth making sure all the customers had everything they asked for. They have a few tables outside for dining, however we decided not to eat here. We took our food back to our room and had a nice dinner on our patio with a glass of wine. We just wish we had more time on the island so we could have come back to have another meal here again.

The ribs and brisket were very good. The sauces were good. The side cowboy beans were good. Corn on the cob was a very good side. No refills on the skinny ice tea was a surprise. We stayed inside because of the flying bugs. Others joined us indoors. It's good barbecue so we will go back. Very good ADA access. Enjoy.

Absolutely charming place. Summer dining is outside on the deck and surrounding grass with ping pong table for kids and other yard games. I noticed fire pits around the yard most likely used in fall and Spring. The pulled pork sandwich was delicious i added extra bbq sauce (homemade) for extra sweetness. My husband had the baby back ribs which was unbelievable! The meat fell off the bones. Yumm Local wine and beer served here with Lopez ice cream! My new fav when Im on the island!

Prime ribeye, creamy mac & cheese, well-seasoned fries.

With a little time on our hands we drive into Anacortes since we've never really been there, only passing through to catch the ferry. Realizing it's the 4th, we happen to catch the tail end of the Anacortes 4th of July Parade. At this point it's around if not after lunch time. Well with crowds and traffic we go on a walk-about in search of food and not more than a klick from our position we find this nice little lot by the marina with some food trailers. Choices, choices, choices, those being Chinese food, BBQ and Gourmet Hot Dogs. First choice was the dogs, but the line was a little long for us. So we went with BBQ...again glad we did. It was a bit of wait, since it had just opened not to long ago, some folks already waiting and one person doing food prep, cooking, taking orders and running the till, he mentioned waiting for someone else so help was on the way, but he did great, and the wait wasn't that bad. So for lunch we had one beef brisket sammy, two pulled pork sammys, one topped with coleslaw and with other with mac-n-cheese and beans on the side. First the sides, both probably one of the best I've had, no seriously. I'm not a real big mac-n-cheese guy, but this one was damn tasty. I love that I could tasted the cheese and it was not weak in flavor. I thought it was as good as if not better than that one Pike Place Mac-n-Cheese place. Then there was the beans, OMG, those baked beans were no joke...awesome! I so wished I'd gotten more of that. Then the sammys: The brisket was so tender, so juicy with some excellent flavor. Not smothered in BBQ sauce, it was just the perfect amount and tasted so good! The pulled pork sammys were excellent, lotsa pork with the perfect amount of sauce so they complimented each other flavor-wise so it's not all BBQ sauce you taste. Bottom line, some DAMN GOOD BBQ! Some restaurant's idea of BBQ is to take meat and cover/drown it in sauce-ugh. i.e. Applebee's bottomless riblets (only thing going for it is that it is bottomless-but it's nothing more than BBQ sauce with meat texture....I digress). Anyhow, the next time we are passing through, this definitely will be a stop. Surprised not to find it on YELP so I had to add it myself. It was that good! Now hopefully you can support a local small business and get some excellent BBQ too!

I must say it was nice and juicy. With that said, wow it's pricy. The "Vancouver's Best Cornbread" is a pretty tall claim, but this place delivers. The cornbread is suprisingly moist and sweet. Of course, try not to think about the ingredients. Definitely worth trying. Pretty solid food if one has deep enough pockets. Recommended.

Maybe it's better in the prairies but here I've find it hard to find either beef or pork cooked right with most it either being dry, unseasoned or undersmoked. The big plus for Rosie's is they actually seem to know how to cook brisket using fatty cuts and smoking it long enough to breakdown the connective tissue without it getting mushy. It could have been smoked even longer but it was probably the best I've had in BC. They don't have burnt ends and at least the server I dealt with didn't seem to know what they are. They at least know you never serve Texas BBQ with sauce on it. It's expensive for BBQ which seems to be standard in Canada with 18 dollars for just 1/2 a pound but it's good enough I'll pay it. They didn't ask if I wanted lean or fatty which is traditional in BBQ joints. I found the pulled pork to not be as good. It didn't have the flavour or moistness that I expect especially compared to the South Carolina pulled pork that I prefer and eat when visiting family there. Also it looks more chopped than pulled. If that is Vancouver's best cornbread I'm guessing the bar for cornbread is pretty low too. It's too sweet. Cornbread is a savory dish. The moistness was good. This would be bog standard Q in Austin or Charleston but for Vancouver it's very very good.

The Case of the Missing Fish…read more I had my salmon and halibut shipped from the fishing lodge back in June. There is an expected processing time of 6-8 weeks. Around 7 weeks my father got a call from St. Jean's arranging for his catch to be shipped to him. I called to find out about the status of my order and they had no record of my shipment. I gave them my invoice number and it wasn't in their system. After a few weeks someone at the cannery finally found my fish and it hadn't been processed yet because of some issue with my order. Was anyone ever going to contact me and work out those issues? When they finally found my fish there were a few salmon missing. To be honest I don't know if this was an issue with the cannery or the fishing lodge. After another few weeks of calls between the lodge and cannery they found a few fish to help make up some of the order. The lodge sent additional fish and I awaited word from the cannery. After another few weeks I called and lo and behold they had received the shipment and they said they would be calling me the next week to arrange shipment. Guess what? Yep! No calls back. Another two weeks pass and I call asking to speak to a Supervisor. He's not in so I get his voicemail. I leave a message and time passes. Today, one-two weeks after the voice mail and I call again and the Supervisor is out for the next two days. I am assured that my message will be hand delivered and I will be contacted as soon as he gets back. Stay tuned to see if I actually talk to someone and if I will ever actually receive my fish. (I will update review when and if there is a resolution to my saga.) I'm not holding my breath.
