What a fantastic experience on New Year's Eve for dinner. The atmosphere was lively and bustling. A very small dining room which makes it intimate and comfortable. The service was impeccable. Doing a 5 course meal paired with wine and they pulled it off perfectly. From the amuse to the delicious tuna tartare. Amazing and so delicious. The grilled salad and soup came next and they too were well seasoned and very flavorful. I had the scallops which were perfectly cooked and presented beautifully. They melted and tasted amazing. The steak was also cooked perfect and very well seasoned. We were so full at this point it was hard to eat everything! Next up dessert. I can only restate amazing. We can't wait to go back and eat from the menu. We will definitely return and I highly recommend going! read more

I had zero intention of eating here tonight; I'm vegetarian and I don't eat seafood. But man, am I glad I came! Funny enough, I showed up because Tenth House next door was closed for remodeling. It was half an hour before Coho shut down for the night and I was hungry, so I stopped in to see if they had salads. Tonight happened to be a pop-up Izakaya night I wasn't previously aware of. The entire menu was Japanese-inspired. I ordered the vegetarian ramen with mushrooms that the chef was kind enough to make without sesame, since I have an allergy. I asked for a random, on-the-spot-invented drink and the bartender delivered. It was such a good drink! The waitstaff was very kind to me and checked on me frequently. I felt valued and seen, which as a woman of color matters a lot--especially at an upscale restaurant. I'm docking a star only because the ramen itself was very bland. In their quest to honor my allergy needs, they left out any sauces and seasoning to the noodles. 10/10 Amazing experience. Service is so friendly, food was perfect no complaints, and ambiance was soft and cozy. We came in as a party of 2 on a Saturday night at 8pm with no reservation, there was no wait and was seated immediately. We ordered a seafood appetizer and a cassoulet with duck and pork to share. The app was very light and you could tell it was fresh. The meat in the cassoulet was cooked perfectly, so juicy and crisp. I was amazed of how simple and tasty the dishes were. We got a scoop of homemade chocolate and vanilla ice cream (not pictured) for dessert, and it was a great ending. They accommodated my partners gluten free diet, and we had a great experience. We were in Friday Harbor and were lucky enough to find the Coho Restaurant. It is kind of a small place, so it pays to get reservations if it is a busy time. The interior has a very homey and comfortable feel. Service was excellent throughout the meal. Water came right away and we were able to order a bottle of wine quickly. The wine selection is nice. For starters, we had the heirloom tomato caprese. It was excellent. They advertise as farm to table, and you could taste the freshness of the tomatoes and the local mozzarella was really tasty. For the main, I had the lamb gnocchi. This was outstanding, the gnocchi was just perfect with a really good flavor. Then the lamb was really good also. It was cooked well and was such a good complement to the gnocchi, an inspired pairing. My friend had the farmers risotto. She loved it. I tasted it and thought it was great also. We were too full for dessert. The Coho Restaurant is definitely worth a visit. read more

Where to start! Susan was fantastic! Could not have asked for a friendlier or attentive person to serve our table. The atmosphere was great. Intimate but still airy with room between tables. The food was excellent. The beef was prepared to perfection. My pasta dish was so good. The croquettes were excellent. Honestly, it was wonderful from the moment we stepped in. We were very disappointed with our dining experience here. The staff was very nice but they couldn't overcome the lack of training and the distasteful food. Our server was lovely but there were many strange things about the service besides being slow to get to initially greet us. So it took forever for her to come to our table. We ordered the four course prix fixe dinner. Each course was placed on top of our "bread" dishes. Very odd. Those dishes should have been moved to the side or removed from the table altogether. Our silverware was never replaced, as it should have been for each of the four courses. But what really disappointed though, was the food. It is sad when the best thing was the initial amuse bouche - cucumber with a beet hummus. For my starter I ordered the tomato soup. It was completely unremarkable. Hubby had the Coho salad. It was supposed to have pickled red onion on it but did not. The server told us they had run out but then the chef came out with some and make it pretty clear that they had forgotten to put it on the salad. We had some with our last few bites and it really balanced the dish out! For the next course I ordered the chickpea fritters and hubby the crabcakes. But then, we were told that they had run out of the crabcakes so he had to choose something else. There wasn't much to choose from. Just a caprese salad or pork belly. Since we don't eat pork, that left the caprese salad and he had just had a salad. We ended up splitting so he wasn't stuck. The caprese salad wasn't great. The tomatoes needed to be riper and the mozzarella a better quality. The worst though was yet to come. Hubby had the halibut which was overcooked so that lovely sweet flavor was obliterated. Mine was really bad. I had the seafood tagliatelle. It had so many conflicting flavors I really couldn't eat it. There was an over powering amount of tarragon with large pieces of citrus (I think blood orange) with the rind still on it. This was very bitter. Then there were large slices of leek that were barely cooked. Those were inedible. Our desserts were fine - ice cream sundaes. Really hard to mess that up. We had been so anticipating the meal. Usually a prix fixe tasting never disappoints but this one wasn't worth the money at all. Final note. When I called to confirm our reservation, I asked what the dress code was. I was told that it was semi-formal. It isn't. I would say smart casual is the dress code. read more

Definitely the best restaurant we tried on San Juan Island! There's limited indoor seating so make reservations - but it's worth it for all the fresh farm-to-table food. We came at 5pm for first seating, where they have a deal of 2 for $70. Comes with soup & salad, an entree and ice cream, so pretty good deal - but we didn't realize that some entrees would cost extra, so wish that part was made more clear rather than just adding the additional cost to the bill. The soup was clearly made with very fresh tomatoes, and had a nice spicy kick. The greens and veggies in all the dishes were incredibly fresh and matched well with each dish to highlight the protein. Duck was cooked a bit more well done but very tender. The halibut was delicious, large tender flakes with a pesto sauce and was a light but flavorful dish. The hangar steak was pretty good for being a hangar steak - cooked exactly rare as requested. The ice cream was also locally made and pretty unique flavors. This is a very nice restaurant. We went there for our last dinner on Friday Harbor. It took a bit for them to come to table and we ordered cocktails. They do serve alcohol but only certain spirits, no vodka. We didn't know this and ordered our usual. What we got was a margarita and a tequila with pomegranate soda. . Of course being the lushes that we are we drank them just the same. We shared a salad and the halibut. The fish was cooked perfectly and delish. We enjoyed it very much. So my question is always this, would I go back? Maybe. Now that I know a bit more, I would try it again and then decide. Ate here this past weekend. I'm giving it a 3 just due to the pretty evening. We sat by a window and had a nice breeze. Thank goodness they didn't sit us by the restroom. Might I suggest a screen or something in front of that bathroom door? Goodness. Felt bad for the folks sitting right next to it. We were clear that we were celebrating our wedding anniversary when we made reservations and my husband mentioned it when we sat down but they did not acknowledge it in any way. We were not looking for anything free but a "happy anniversary" would have been nice. The food was average. We were not really too impressed - the masa cake was probably the best thing I ate. We had the 4 course meal. Told the server we would probably order wine with dinner after cocktails but he never offered it or suggested anything. Our waters were never filled once. One server took my husbands drink away and we had to ask for it back (he got the three whiskey flight). They brought back another shot of whiskey with no apology or anything. My husband had the beef duo and I had the halibut. He liked his dish, my halibut was ok. The crust was flavorful but otherwise flavorless if you did not get any crust with the bite. I think it was due to not much beet sauce. There was 1 potato fingerling. ONE. The dish was $36. All in all, I am not sure what the hype is. The ambience is nice as Ling as you don't have to sit next to bathroom. Very intimate but service was lackluster. We did ask about a military discount as we are both veterans and they did give us that so that was nice - again another reason for the 3 stars. We tipped 20% on the original bill just due to pandemic times and I don't want to take it out on the work servers put in but I think they could really train on their service levels. I don't feel we should have to ask for water, and suggestions for wine in a 4 star restaurant and usually I will spend less as the evening continues if service levels are not there. Awesome. Had the chefs menu and every course was special. Standouts in my experience were 1) Rabbit, 2) Lamb Bolognese, 3) Halibut (market fish du jour), 4) Capellini, and 5) Asparagus. Each worth coming in for individually but having them presented together in one sitting was incredible. The staff was excellent. Attentive and clearly passionate about the food they serve. There are a lot of great dining options in Friday Harbor, but there are none superior to Coho Restaurant. Coho Restaurant offers a very intimate and private dining experience with only a few tables. It is highly recommended that you make reservations. I've dined both as a small table during regular dinner service, as well as hosting a private party of 25. The service and food were consistent through both these dining experiences. The service is exceptional and very focused. Very passionate and attentive staff. Coho Restaurant is the epitome of "Casual" Fine Dining. The food is delicious. Excellently prepared local, sustainable, Pacific Northwest cuisine. Salmon, medium-rare, like it's supposed to be! The San Juan Islands are a special place to my wife and I. We were married at Roche Harbor in May 2018. There will be many trips back to San Juan Island, and Coho Restaurant will always be a favorite. read more

We had our wedding reception here due to their affiliation with Tucker House Inn, where our ceremony took place. The restaurant is a couple blocks away from the inn in a cute little house. We gave them placecards, a seating chart, and entree orders in advance and they coordinated all of that flawlessly. With COVID restrictions, one of our tables had to be seated on the patio. They opened up the doors and window to make it seem less like they were separated, but it wasn't as seamless as we'd hoped. It was also unseasonably warm out! They were roasting out there, but it was also quite warm inside the restaurant and my husband and I were sweating for the latter half of the meal. For drinks, we settled on a specific budget and offered people either beer, wine (a white, red, or rose), or lavender margaritas for alcohol and then wine or iced tea for non-alcohol. It was supposed to be a cash bar if you wanted something other than what I listed, but we ended up being charged for old fashions that a guest ordered. Oh well! Also, the lavender margarita was unimpressive and did not taste like lavender at all. We really wanted to incorporate elements of Texas (where we're from, big margarita state!) and the San Juan's (lavender), but it wasn't executed as well as I would have liked. We almost perfectly estimated how much we'd need for alcohol and did not end up going over our budget, which was appreciated. That equaled out to about 2-3 drinks per person, which I think everyone was satisfied with over the course of a 3 hour long dinner. The waitstaff was quick to offer your refills when you needed it. The food was perfectly coordinated to last exactly 3 hours. We had a 7 course meal, which included a shrimp/crab cake amuse, salmon tartine, chilled pea soup with a scallop, asparagus and chard with ricotta and cured egg yolk, duck tortellini, steak with a potato cake or fin fish with goat cheese risotto, and mini desserts with chocolate soufflé, apple crisp, and pecan pie a la mode. Having good food at our wedding was a priority, and Coho definitely delivered! Everything was incredibly tasty and filling. The menu was seasonally inspired and farm to table, which was fun. We had our photographer take photos back in the kitchen, so once we get those back I'll add them to my review. The last hour of our allotted time was dedicated to dessert and speeches. The food is good IF they happen to feel like honoring your reservation or letting you order takeout as promised. However, we won't bother again. Why not? In short, they managed to ruin plans for TWO different birthday celebrations in our family in the past 2 years. On a third occasion -- our anniversary -- they actually allowed us to eat (with a reservation) and that experience was merely OK. Here's what happened. Event 1: birthday for my wife. We made a reservation well in advance. Yet a couple of days before, they called to cancel it in order to serve a wedding party that wanted the whole restaurant. It was too late to get reservations at our other preferred restaurant. Lesson 1: they will give your reservation to anyone with more money. Event 2: our anniversary. They honored our reservation (on a Sunday) and dinner was excellent. Well, it WAS excellent until they seated another group next to us with EXTREMELY strong cologne and perfume. That rendered our $160 bottle of wine useless and made dessert tasteless. They should have seated those folks farther away (the restaurant was not busy) or outside. Lesson 2: they don't care about your experience or whether you actually enjoy their food and wine. Event 3: our daughter's birthday. She was excited for her BF to have such fancy food and prix fixe for the first time. This was during Covid times and they offered takeout, so we called the day before to ensure that they would be able to do prix fixe takeouts for 4 people on the following day. They said sure, no problem, just call tomorrow. However, when we called the next day, they said they were too busy and wouldn't do takeout! I noted that they had agreed the day before, but they didn't care. Lesson 3: they don't care what they've told you (see Lesson 1). Bottom line: they might serve you ... unless someone with more money wants service, or unless they feel too busy. And if they do, the food might be good (based on 1 out of 3 attempts), yet you will be at the mercy of their tiny dining room and other guests. Recommendation: they should honor their reservations, or at least give folks an apology when you let them down. Personally, we won't try again. read more

AMAZING! Anna Maria and staff are simply wonderful. My husband and I chose to have our wedding luncheon at Coho with about 30 people. From the get go, Anna Maria was incredibly communicative and knowledgeable. Since we live in Seattle, we had to coordinate almost everything remotely, but that was not an issue at all. Coho is dedicated to in season, locally sourced food and their knowledge of cuisine and artistry really shines through. As a bride, I felt a bit stressed when thinking about planning a luncheon, but Anna Maria guided me through it beautifully, pointing out things and asking questions about stuff I would have completely missed. The day of our luncheon was fabulous as well. All her staff and servers were absolute professionals and the lunch was to die for. They graciously accommodate several of our guests food allergies and preferences, going so far as to make sure that my mother in law had a gluten free, egg and dairy free cake that was similar to the wedding cake so that she wouldn't feel like she was missing out. She made an INCREDIBLE wedding cake with fresh flowers that all my guests are still talking about months later. Coho will become our spot to go back and celebrate our anniversary for years to come. SUCKED! I had great, great hopes for this restaurant. They have maybe 10 tables. Made reservations the day before we planned to eat there, and got 7:15 reso's for 3. We were on time, seated promptly, and given.....water. Ordered wine....and the offerings by the glass were excellent...they were out of my first choice however, which never bodes well. I ordered the scallop appetizer. It showed up in 15 minutes.....two acceptably seared scallops with not enough bacon/mushrooms to compliment the flavors...strike one. We had to ask for bread multiple times....strike two....the slices kept getting thinner by the third basket of bread(about 8 pieces) the slices were more like crackers than pieces of bread. It took OVER an hour to get our entrees...strike three.....my mother ordered the vegetarian stuffed peppers, and promptly pronounced them tasteless. SWMBO, ordered the Jidori Chik'n and loved it..... I got the King Salmon.....it was overcooked.....that is a crime against all that is Holy. The carrots were good/great...there were two slices. I sub'd the mashed potatoes because the dish came with pasta and I cannot eat it. There was a bed of chopped/slimy/under seasoned zucchini....I left it on the plate. We did not have dessert, which they tout as made in house....walked down the street for ice cream on the waterfront. Coho has a HUGE page in the local Yellow Pages, and it caught my eye, and for that, there is MASSIVE discontent.....the best thing that could happen to this restaurant is to go out of business so the chef can take it somewhere else, and work on his craft, which is sorely in need of it. This place is expensive, pretentious and vastly in need of SOMEONE who can do a good job....the space itself is just fine, and could really be awesome given the right opportunity. read more
